00:00:00.000 Hey there, Dan Martell here,
00:00:01.120 serial entrepreneur, investor, and creator of SaaS Academy.
00:00:03.200 In this episode, I'm gonna share with you
00:00:04.600 how to grow in your life to be more successful,
00:00:08.360 whatever that means for you,
00:00:09.660 from wealth, health, financials, relationships,
00:00:12.280 you name it, I'm gonna share my unique perspective
00:00:15.060 that I've never shared before
00:00:17.080 that's gonna give you a totally different twist
00:00:19.140 on how to approach these areas of your life
00:00:21.200 and be sure to stay to the end
00:00:22.920 where I'm gonna share with you my five productivity hacks
00:00:26.160 to double your energy and focus throughout your day
00:00:29.180 with these easy, easy steps to implement.
00:00:44.380 So if you're new to my story or my channel,
00:00:47.080 I just wanna let you know that, you know,
00:00:49.060 the life I live today,
00:00:50.500 investing in 40 plus SaaS companies, software as a service,
00:00:53.480 or, you know, becoming a multimillionaire at 27,
00:00:56.680 and continuing to build, you know,
00:00:59.880 my empire buying companies,
00:01:01.640 coaching the top software entrepreneurs in the world,
00:01:03.720 working with at-risk youth in my program called Creators
00:01:08.600 to help them build their confidence through building businesses.
00:01:11.280 All of those things were a byproduct of me
00:01:14.560 continuously investing and focusing on bettering my life
00:01:18.520 and my situation and being accountable for, you know,
00:01:22.040 what I'm achieving and, or not,
00:01:24.120 or if I wanted a goal, go out there and get it.
00:01:26.960 And what I wanna share with you today
00:01:28.880 is not only how I created millions of dollars in value
00:01:33.220 for myself and my investors
00:01:34.940 and a lot of my coaching clients,
00:01:37.440 but more importantly, the different perspective
00:01:41.220 that I don't hear shared often
00:01:43.240 on six core areas of your life
00:01:46.680 that I think you should be taking into consideration
00:01:48.740 and how it's gonna impact success for you
00:01:52.300 in both financial and personal levels.
00:01:55.360 Number one, your wealth.
00:01:57.400 So here's the equation
00:01:59.460 that one of my mentors shared with me.
00:02:01.060 He said, when you start off in life,
00:02:03.100 you trade time for money.
00:02:05.640 This is every individual where you work,
00:02:07.680 you get paid by the hour.
00:02:09.180 And he said, over time, if you change your vehicle,
00:02:12.220 the way you generate wealth or create money,
00:02:15.200 and all of a sudden you have the opportunity
00:02:16.920 to trade money for time so that you can buy back time
00:02:21.480 to do higher value things.
00:02:23.500 Most paths, it works that exact same way.
00:02:26.440 So step one, trade time for money.
00:02:28.380 Step two, trade money for time.
00:02:30.800 And then the third is where you wanna graduate to,
00:02:33.700 which is you wanna trade money for money.
00:02:35.640 I, today, my life looks dramatically different
00:02:38.760 because I have my capital and money working for me
00:02:42.340 by buying equity in businesses, technology companies,
00:02:46.440 and other cashflow investments
00:02:48.340 that on a monthly basis generate returns, right?
00:02:52.340 You know, and this is Warren Buffett.
00:02:54.840 This is Rich Dad Poor Dad.
00:02:56.760 This is how the world of wealthy people, it works.
00:03:01.660 And nobody ever taught me that.
00:03:03.260 And I remember hearing that equation.
00:03:04.540 I was like, okay, so what you're saying is
00:03:06.580 the game I'm playing is money or time for money.
00:03:09.640 Once I have some money, save that up,
00:03:11.400 trade money to buy back time
00:03:13.420 so I can work on higher value things.
00:03:14.840 And once that produces capital in excess
00:03:17.300 of what I need to invest in my business to grow,
00:03:19.400 then I take that capital and I look for investments,
00:03:22.160 either real estate or other companies
00:03:24.500 or other investors that invest their money.
00:03:27.520 And to me, this is for, again, this is all my perspective,
00:03:31.340 is I'm looking to create multi-generational wealth.
00:03:33.860 I want 10 generations from now
00:03:36.420 for those people's lives to look different.
00:03:38.820 I'm not looking to give them a handout,
00:03:40.400 but I'm gonna create a structure
00:03:42.140 where it is going to impact multiple generations,
00:03:45.560 way past my time here on earth,
00:03:48.540 because I think that's the opportunity and the potential
00:03:51.500 that I know I was fortunate enough to discover
00:03:53.600 when I was 17, that I wake up every day
00:03:56.800 that I'm on a mission to fulfill.
00:03:59.400 So that's your wealth.
00:04:01.160 Number two, your health.
00:04:03.020 So I've got three rules, okay?
00:04:04.900 I'm not gonna tell you to do CrossFit
00:04:06.520 or train for an Ironman or go on intermittent fasting,
00:04:10.280 all things that I've done.
00:04:11.720 I'm gonna share with you the basics.
00:04:13.760 These are the things that I teach.
00:04:14.720 I have two young boys, Max and Noah,
00:04:16.700 and I teach them these things.
00:04:18.120 Number one, stay hydrated.
00:04:20.040 Drink as much, I literally have this in my studio right now.
00:04:23.580 I drink probably four of these a day, okay?
00:04:26.660 So call it a gallon of water.
00:04:27.980 It's a bit much.
00:04:28.580 Some people are like, that's too much water.
00:04:30.380 That's your opinion.
00:04:31.100 I know what I like for myself.
00:04:32.260 I wake up in the morning, it's sitting next to my bed,
00:04:34.980 fully loaded, full up to the top.
00:04:37.660 I'm getting this crushed.
00:04:39.060 That starts off my day and I keep that process up.
00:04:41.980 Number two, no sugar.
00:04:44.720 I don't know when we're gonna have the instrumentation
00:04:47.640 to really support my belief,
00:04:50.160 but when you eat excess sugar, when you have chocolate,
00:04:54.760 and people are like, oh, dark chocolate's fine.
00:04:56.560 I get it, dark chocolate.
00:04:57.680 I'm talking about like refined sugars
00:05:00.060 and, you know, crap carbs, okay?
00:05:03.020 When you eat and ingest that stuff, it affects your mind.
00:05:06.180 I'm not even worried about my physique or my body
00:05:08.460 or my performance as an athlete.
00:05:10.900 I'm talking about my thoughts.
00:05:12.860 I have personally discovered that when you eat sugar,
00:05:16.640 it changes the thinking, which is crazy to me.
00:05:20.500 But again, I want you to test it for yourself.
00:05:22.240 Do a 30-day no sugar challenge
00:05:24.640 and just see what changes in your thought patterns.
00:05:27.740 Your body's gonna dramatically transform.
00:05:29.700 I know that for a fact.
00:05:30.880 And I'm not talking about like no sugars.
00:05:32.940 I'm just saying like try to keep it under
00:05:34.520 like 50 grams or 100 grams a day.
00:05:36.520 Maybe 100 grams of carbs per day
00:05:38.460 or like just don't eat any dessert.
00:05:40.320 Don't eat any candies.
00:05:41.200 don't eat ice cream, don't have too much,
00:05:44.120 you know, the amount of sugars that people drink,
00:05:47.200 orange juice, sodas, et cetera, is bananas.
00:05:51.480 Anyways, that's number two.
00:05:52.320 And then three is sweat every day.
00:05:53.760 It's one of my mantras, it's my hashtag.
00:05:55.800 I use it, I literally work out and get a sweat on every day.
00:05:58.280 And people are like, oh, you need to recover,
00:05:59.680 you need recovery days.
00:06:00.600 Now you don't.
00:06:01.520 You literally can move, if you sat there
00:06:03.800 and did 50 burpees right now, 50,
00:06:06.000 if you don't know what a burpee is, Google it.
00:06:07.420 But down and up 50 times, you can do that every day.
00:06:10.460 and it's not gonna impact your joints,
00:06:12.580 it's not gonna impact your thing.
00:06:13.420 If you can't do a burpee, go walk, walk briskly,
00:06:16.700 get your sweat on.
00:06:17.660 I just want a bubble of sweat
00:06:20.220 to be produced on your forehead and you're good to go.
00:06:23.080 You do that every day, you'll create movement and motion
00:06:25.720 and it'll move you forward
00:06:27.260 in all other aspects of your life.
00:06:29.200 Number three, your partner.
00:06:31.340 Your partner in life is one of the most important decisions
00:06:34.740 you're gonna make around the people side of things.
00:06:37.360 I read this a long time ago in a book
00:06:39.520 called Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.
00:06:41.880 He has a whole chapter dedicated to it.
00:06:44.000 Here's my simplistic version distilled around that
00:06:47.260 is you don't need, some people are like,
00:06:49.260 I want a partner that's on the same journey as me,
00:06:51.400 that's into growth and personal development
00:06:53.420 and I'm so frustrated, they got a fixed mindset.
00:06:55.820 You know what?
00:06:56.700 That's your own stuff.
00:06:57.680 You got to work through that.
00:06:59.160 I think that at a minimum,
00:07:01.160 all you need in life is somebody that's optimistic, okay?
00:07:05.280 Them not being on that same journey, that's your journey.
00:07:08.080 Go on that journey, shine your light, be the lighthouse.
00:07:10.940 Do not judge them for not wanting those same things.
00:07:14.280 It's not their needs or want right now.
00:07:17.760 Just do it for you.
00:07:18.860 I will say as a filter,
00:07:20.860 make sure you don't get committed to somebody long-term
00:07:24.500 that's a pessimist.
00:07:26.020 That's probably when I look at,
00:07:27.900 because I coach a lot of clients,
00:07:29.160 dozens of clients that have,
00:07:30.560 some of them have incredible marriages
00:07:31.860 and other ones have really challenging situations.
00:07:34.700 And the common theme that I see,
00:07:36.640 that I'm blessed to have the most incredible woman in my life.
00:07:40.060 Renee is my rock, my queen.
00:07:43.060 She's amazing.
00:07:44.680 And it's just, it's optimism.
00:07:46.440 It's positivity, right?
00:07:48.020 It's not, here's what's going on.
00:07:49.940 Oh, what if this happens?
00:07:51.200 What if that happens?
00:07:52.100 I can't believe, you know, fear-based conversations.
00:07:54.720 It's always about possibility.
00:07:56.640 Even if they're not as driven, it doesn't matter.
00:07:58.880 It literally, get rid of those needs
00:08:00.800 and just focus for somebody that is glass half full.
00:08:04.140 And there's so many incredible, sweet, beautiful, healthy people out there
00:08:08.440 that have these mindsets that you can avoid anybody that doesn't
00:08:12.560 so you can choose the right partner
00:08:13.600 because that one decision will have probably a 10x impact
00:08:18.420 on your overall ability to succeed and achieve the dreams that you're after.
00:08:23.140 Number four, your bliss.
00:08:24.860 So this is hobbies.
00:08:27.460 I like to ask people, what would you do for free?
00:08:29.860 What do you think?
00:08:30.540 I mean, for me, it's really simple.
00:08:32.000 I like to kiteboard.
00:08:32.920 I like to snowboard.
00:08:33.760 I like to road bike, I like to go on a boat,
00:08:37.960 I like to travel.
00:08:39.340 These are things that are my bliss, you know?
00:08:41.100 And people are like, oh, I'm too busy building my business,
00:08:42.960 I'm building an empire, I don't have time for this.
00:08:45.280 Look, if you can't take a week off twice a year
00:08:48.320 to disconnect and go do the thing that recharges you,
00:08:53.120 brings you opportunity to reflect and just think about it
00:08:57.040 just like, are you a different person after a vacation?
00:08:59.280 When you come back to your team,
00:09:00.800 when you come back to your customers,
00:09:02.760 Do you feel more energetic after that time
00:09:06.500 to follow your bliss?
00:09:07.700 Maybe it's a hobby.
00:09:09.140 The answer's probably yes.
00:09:10.620 So my encouragement for you
00:09:13.280 is to ensure that you take that time,
00:09:16.640 you lock it in.
00:09:18.240 And don't look at it as like not,
00:09:21.200 you know, being hungry or driven.
00:09:23.000 Look at it as a recharge, right?
00:09:26.140 You know, one of my Ironman coach, Mark,
00:09:28.320 he said this to me once.
00:09:29.260 He goes, look, if you had, you know,
00:09:30.960 50 push-ups to do and 50 air squats to do or 100 it was 100 100 air squats and 100
00:09:36.060 push-ups would you do them back to back or would you break them up would you do 10 and 10 and 10
00:09:43.080 and 10 and the reason why is because they use different energy systems and it's important for
00:09:48.260 you not to to to essentially attack an energy system and deplete it and and have it crippled
00:09:53.980 because then you're not going to be able to even move later so the idea of using your bliss as as
00:10:00.240 these mini recharges or mini vacations
00:10:02.480 throughout your day, your week, your quarter.
00:10:04.220 I think it's just, it has to be part of the conversation
00:10:07.040 for you to actually be successful.
00:10:09.760 I'm telling you to take a vacation.
00:10:12.180 I'm telling you to take time for yourself,
00:10:15.040 to follow your hobbies,
00:10:16.960 to do the things you would do for free,
00:10:19.080 to do the things that light you up.
00:10:20.820 And in doing that, you'll be more successful.
00:10:24.860 That's my prediction.
00:10:25.880 It's true for my life.
00:10:26.800 It's true for a lot of the clients I coach.
00:10:28.500 And I know it'll be true for you.
00:10:29.580 Number five, your relationships.
00:10:31.940 The big idea I have for this,
00:10:33.480 you've probably heard you're the average of the five people
00:10:35.440 you spend the most time with
00:10:36.580 and your network is your net worth.
00:10:38.180 Here's what I'm going to suggest.
00:10:39.820 This is what I do.
00:10:40.660 I'm gonna suggest you invest in your relationships.
00:10:43.780 Invest in proximity, okay?
00:10:45.960 Proximity means being around people.
00:10:48.940 An example for you to understand what this means
00:10:50.960 is last year I got invited by my good buddy Curtis
00:10:53.120 to spend a week at his summer home
00:10:56.700 on an island in British Columbia
00:10:58.240 with our family and kids and three other families,
00:11:01.500 him, ours, and two other families.
00:11:03.920 And that was obviously an investment.
00:11:06.280 We already had vacations scheduled.
00:11:07.960 We were doing a bunch of other stuff,
00:11:09.040 but we wanted to make it happen
00:11:10.200 because one of the things that my wife and I appreciate
00:11:13.960 and strategically think about,
00:11:16.600 it's actually a decision.
00:11:17.760 It's a question we ask ourselves
00:11:18.760 when we look at our next year coming up is,
00:11:20.880 what families do we admire
00:11:22.980 that we wanna spend more time with?
00:11:25.100 And that is 100% gonna require an investment
00:11:27.600 in proximity. You know, investing in flying to an event, investing in joining a mastermind,
00:11:34.260 investing in hiring a coach and spending time with that coach in person, investing in an
00:11:40.320 introduction and getting on a plane or taking a side trip or whatever it is for you to get
00:11:45.560 close proximity. There's something magical that happens in person that doesn't happen
00:11:50.840 if you're on Skype or on Zoom or on a phone call.
00:11:57.280 It just, it's not there.
00:11:59.280 So I wanna encourage you to actually put your money
00:12:01.420 where your mouth is by moving yourself to them,
00:12:05.600 get around other people that share your passion
00:12:08.440 and values in life and make it a decision
00:12:12.460 and not something that kind of happened because of luck.
00:12:15.920 Because I think that's what people are just letting happen,
00:12:18.300 life happen to them by default.
00:12:19.780 I'm a happen, you know, life happens to me by design.
00:12:23.580 So I want you to design your life,
00:12:24.900 not make it happen by default, by investing in proximity.
00:12:28.100 Number six, your mission.
00:12:29.640 I truly believe the moment that you discover your purpose
00:12:34.680 on why you're here on earth, why you exist,
00:12:37.600 why you're alive, why you're in this body
00:12:39.560 is the moment that you truly start to live.
00:12:44.700 And there's a bunch of different ways
00:12:46.400 to get to that answer.
00:12:47.540 one of my favorite questions that I got from my friend Philip McKernan is you know what wrong do
00:12:53.600 you want to right in this world what wrong do you want to right or another way that he he framed it
00:12:58.480 was what pain did you go through as a child you know because most of most of our adult kind of
00:13:05.880 behaviors are definitely based on experiences we had as a child that you want to help other people
00:13:09.680 avoid or get through easier and once you understand that mission for me it's working with at-risk
00:13:16.740 youth. I have a incredible, uh, amount of empathy for teenagers that are dealing with substance
00:13:24.380 abuse, um, homelessness, um, lacking resources, mentorship, et cetera, uh, that are just incredible
00:13:32.360 human beings. Just like literally the most, they just need a little guidance. And for me, that's
00:13:37.640 my mission. It's why I do all the business stuff because by doing that, I get more resources. You
00:13:43.120 Somebody said it's not about the money.
00:13:45.040 I always say to those people, you haven't given enough away.
00:13:48.420 Like if you say it's not about the money,
00:13:50.900 show me your tax returns because that just tells me
00:13:53.880 the more value you create in the world,
00:13:56.280 the more wealth you can create,
00:13:57.240 the more you have the opportunity to use that
00:13:59.180 to serve and impact others.
00:14:00.640 And I know how to do that, so I lean into that.
00:14:03.460 And that is my mission as part of our business model.
00:14:05.720 Integrate it in your business model.
00:14:07.680 Make it part of it.
00:14:08.720 Read the book, Compassionate Capitalism.
00:14:10.940 Figure out what's your 1%.
00:14:12.500 How do you introduce maybe your kind of Warby Parker-esque type scenario
00:14:21.580 where when a customer joins you,
00:14:23.080 you do some activity that's aligned with your mission in your heart and your soul.
00:14:28.020 And that just changes the dynamics of everything.
00:14:31.200 So that to me is how you get your mission right.
00:14:34.540 So quick recap, how to grow in life to be more successful.
