00:00:00.000 4,700 days ago, I quit drinking, and it made me rich.
00:00:03.780 When my wife got pregnant,
00:00:05.060 I wanted to break the cycle of addiction in my family,
00:00:07.740 and I honestly thought I was just trying
00:00:08.920 to be a better father.
00:00:09.840 But here's what I never expected.
00:00:11.660 That decision didn't just change my family life,
00:00:14.360 it unlocked a level of wealth I never imagined possible.
00:00:17.400 Look, I get it, you're probably thinking
00:00:19.140 this guy's lost his frickin' mind.
00:00:20.600 How does not drinking alcohol create wealth?
00:00:23.040 Well, let me put this in perspective for you.
00:00:25.380 In the 13 years since I quit drinking,
00:00:27.420 I've built several businesses
00:00:29.020 that generate over $100 million in revenue every single year.
00:00:32.740 I've achieved financial freedom I never thought possible,
00:00:35.600 got in the best shape of my life,
00:00:37.300 and even gotten the privilege of mentoring
00:00:39.180 thousands of kids in my local community.
00:00:41.400 And I'm about to prove to you
00:00:42.480 that quitting drinking wasn't just about being a better father.
00:00:45.440 It became the catalyst for building massive wealth.
00:00:48.640 Most people think wealth comes from what you add to your life,
00:00:51.700 new strategies, new habits, new opportunities.
00:00:54.520 No, no, no, no.
00:00:55.080 What I discovered is sometimes
00:00:56.640 the most important thing you can do is subtract. Remove the one thing that's been sabotaging your
00:01:01.900 potential this entire time. So the first thing, instant energy boost equals immediate productivity
00:01:07.340 gains. The most immediate change was energy. And energy is everything in business. More energy
00:01:13.580 means I could actually do the thing that makes money. No more wasting my freaking morning since
00:01:18.080 I'm hungover. No more dragging myself through the day. That's how money started showing up.
00:01:22.640 the math is simple when you're not drinking you're not hung over when you're not hung over you get at
00:01:28.240 least two extra productive hours every single day think about it you wake up you attack the morning
00:01:33.360 how does that compound look at the math two hours times 365 days equals 730 extra hours per year
00:01:40.560 that energy that focus it'll change everything for you over the 13 years that i've done that that's
00:01:45.840 9 000 extra productive hours gained those hours became revenue activities learning new skills
00:01:52.320 building relationships, creating content, starting new businesses. Energy is the foundation that
00:01:57.840 everything else sits on top of. How I show up, how people feel me is going to dictate if they trust
00:02:03.540 me. If I'm trying to hire somebody, they're going to look me in the eyes. If they're bloodshot and
00:02:07.160 I look tired, they're not going to trust me. If I'm trying to close a deal with a partner,
00:02:10.720 they're going to look at my energy. If I'm low energy and I feel depleted, they're not going
00:02:14.920 to trust that I'm going to deliver for them. See, I truly believe that my energy is how I see the
00:02:21.220 world. Your frequency is what you frequently see. If your energy zapped, you will not see the
00:02:26.280 opportunities all around you. The second lesson was about decision-making clarity. Clear mind,
00:02:31.900 better choices. And better choices make more money. And this one almost cost me everything
00:02:37.120 to learn. Making business decisions with a clouded mind equals rushing roulette with your future.
00:02:43.020 There's literally no consistency. You hope to make progress, but you can't count on it because you
00:02:48.080 don't have the clarity of thought. One of the best things one of my coaches taught me was the concept
00:02:53.020 of pulling vocabulary. If my mind's not clear, I can't connect to the words that I need in this
00:02:59.140 moment to deliver this message. How effective am I going to be right here right now if I've got a
00:03:04.480 clouded mind? My ability to tell stories and analogies and metaphors and make points and
00:03:08.760 teach and share all those things at the right level right now with the energy, not going to
00:03:13.280 happen. And sobriety for me meant the ability to show up fully present for every opportunity.
00:03:19.500 It didn't matter if it was the last minute, I showed up with the energy, I showed up with the
00:03:23.160 clear mind. I've heard Jeff Bezos say this several times, that when he wakes up, he putters, clear
00:03:28.260 mind, and his belief is that he only has to make one to two great, meaningful decisions per day.
00:03:34.020 One or two decisions that are going to shape the future of one of the wealthiest people
00:03:37.780 in the world. And how are you going to do that if you don't have a clear mind? If you've got
00:03:41.980 advice that you've been holding on to, that's going to cloud your decision and that guilt's
00:03:46.280 going to actually affect your ability to make decisions. And honestly, this showed up in a big
00:03:49.980 way in 2005 when I was running my company Spheric Technologies. In my book, Buy Back Your Time,
00:03:54.500 I tell the whole story because it became a time assassin for me. It became a place where I was
00:03:58.740 self-medicating and it was sucking up all my time. I was working in New Haven, Connecticut for Yale
00:04:03.680 University. Massive opportunity, deploying some new software. I decided to go out, go to this
00:04:08.960 incredible sushi restaurant and drink sake all night, close the restaurant down, and I'm walking
00:04:13.320 home cross-eyed. The next day, I was supposed to show up for the team. I didn't. That almost cost
00:04:19.100 me the deal. I literally risked my whole team. I've seen this happen over and over again where
00:04:23.440 people don't realize their lack of clarity is going to cost them bigger things than just their
00:04:28.400 own downside on their own life. It's going to impact other people. This was my realization.
00:04:32.420 Drinking is sabotaging my biggest career opportunities. Number three, network upgrades.
00:04:38.260 Lesson three is a big one
00:04:39.360 because I always knew my network is my net worth,
00:04:41.860 but quitting drinking got me around higher caliber people
00:04:45.180 and that grew my income fast.
00:04:47.540 Different people, better opportunities.
00:04:49.720 When drinking becomes the focus,
00:04:52.000 how are you supposed to trust the other people?
00:04:53.640 How are you supposed to trust a conversation
00:04:55.000 that happened at one in the morning?
00:04:56.620 Your social circle is essentially other drinkers.
00:04:58.900 These are people you met at bars, at parties,
00:05:00.880 they're sent around alcohol
00:05:01.940 and you're trying to build a life
00:05:04.160 on a foundation that's solid.
00:05:05.800 It's just tough.
00:05:06.680 And now when I look at today,
00:05:07.900 I literally travel the world, rent yachts,
00:05:10.980 hang out with people that are incredible.
00:05:12.880 We don't drink, we work out in the morning.
00:05:14.780 We do deals faster, we're always present,
00:05:17.420 nobody's mind is turned off.
00:05:19.040 There's a whole group of people that realize today
00:05:21.420 that health is wealth.
00:05:23.000 They would rather say no to people
00:05:25.200 and not do some crazy thing and not have any FOMO
00:05:28.060 and create the space for them
00:05:30.040 to work on their dreams and goals
00:05:31.160 than risk missing out meeting somebody at a party
00:05:33.920 where everybody's wasted
00:05:35.020 and nobody's having a productive conversation.
00:05:36.680 and quitting alcohol has allowed me to reset my peer group
00:05:40.240 of people that are aligned with those values.
00:05:42.220 What I've discovered is those kind of people
00:05:44.160 wake up early, they invest in themselves,
00:05:46.780 and they think long-term.
00:05:48.260 They essentially go from complaining about problems
00:05:50.560 and situations to just solving them.
00:05:52.460 When you get rid of your vices
00:05:54.160 and you have time to go out and wake up early
00:05:56.820 and be around higher caliber people,
00:05:59.120 those people will wanna do deals with you.
00:06:01.040 It's crazy because I even see this trend now
00:06:02.840 where coffee shops are hosting EDM dance parties
00:06:05.960 at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.
00:06:07.800 People don't wanna drink and party anymore.
00:06:09.700 They wanna dance, they wanna have fun,
00:06:11.260 but why not do it where you're not sacrificing your sleep
00:06:13.640 with people that are also aligned
00:06:15.280 with the way you wanna live life?
00:06:16.320 You know, my mother-in-law has this great quote
00:06:17.720 that says nothing good happens after 11 p.m.
00:06:19.940 That's true, I go to bed at 9 p.m.,
00:06:21.760 but most people at 11 p.m., just shut it down, go to sleep.
00:06:25.020 Like there's no need to stay up late, trust me.
00:06:27.380 Nothing magical that's gonna change your life
00:06:29.160 happens after 11 o'clock.
00:06:30.480 And think about your network.
00:06:31.460 You never know who you're gonna meet
00:06:33.240 as you go through life.
00:06:34.160 Imagine you're hungover and you're sitting on a plane.
00:06:36.600 You might even have paid for business class
00:06:38.240 and you've got the hoodie on and the glasses on.
00:06:40.560 You don't want to talk to anybody.
00:06:41.840 That person sitting next to you
00:06:43.160 could be a massive investor in your company,
00:06:45.100 could be a potential business partner,
00:06:46.680 could be one of your biggest customers.
00:06:48.460 Big moves come from big conversations.
00:06:50.920 And if you're sitting there hungover and not having them,
00:06:53.660 you don't create the opportunities
00:06:54.720 that could be right in front of your face.
00:06:57.020 That's where I made most of my money
00:06:59.040 through conversations with people in life
00:07:01.800 because I was present to that opportunity.
00:07:04.480 This is a big one.
00:07:05.420 Think about all the burn relationships
00:07:07.320 where you drank too much
00:07:09.040 and you said the wrong thing to the wrong person.
00:07:11.380 And cutting alcohol allowed me to go and travel
00:07:14.540 without ruining my day and having those big conversations.
00:07:17.860 Number four, a complete life system upgrade.
00:07:20.500 Quitting drinking helped me stay focused
00:07:22.400 and focus builds wealth more than anything.
00:07:25.500 The biggest destroyer of wealth is distraction.
00:07:29.120 It's not just removing alcohol,
00:07:30.900 it's rewiring how you approach everything.
00:07:34.200 If you finally make the decision to let go of something
00:07:37.620 that had such a big part of your life,
00:07:39.840 now you've started to build some confidence.
00:07:42.140 You started to build some new behaviors.
00:07:44.660 Essentially, you have an identity shift.
00:07:46.540 You go from maybe being a consumer of things
00:07:49.340 to a creator of your life.
00:07:51.580 You go from like seeking temporary pleasure
00:07:53.940 and like living in this numbed out state
00:07:56.640 to building long-term value.
00:07:58.460 You start to be able to deal with massive problems.
00:08:01.600 And when you live a big life, you have big problems.
00:08:04.200 If you have a little problem that you can't deal with
00:08:06.120 and you have to start drinking, guess what?
00:08:07.760 Little life.
00:08:08.480 You want big problems, like $10 million problems?
00:08:11.060 You're gonna have to create some space for it.
00:08:12.560 In many ways, delaying gratification with alcohol
00:08:14.960 has trained me to delay gratification
00:08:17.460 with investments in businesses.
00:08:19.000 My horizon for things are way longer.
00:08:22.120 I've got a 55-year business plan.
00:08:24.100 I didn't even think that way before.
00:08:25.560 That's why the whole system got upgraded because of that one decision.
00:08:29.500 And it made me a ton of money.
00:08:31.360 Before I was thinking for the weekend, now I'm thinking for the decade.
00:08:34.320 What's interesting is that same muscle that'll keep you sober
00:08:37.100 is also the same one that'll keep you financially disciplined.
00:08:40.560 In many ways, success isn't about saying yes to more things.
00:08:44.080 It's saying no to almost everything.
00:08:46.180 It's a subtraction, not an addition problem.
00:08:48.700 When I think of like the ultimate productivity tool,
00:08:51.500 it's having a not to do list.
00:08:53.180 And at the top of that list for me is the vices.
00:08:56.500 It's the thing that I know that's holding me back
00:08:58.240 from living into my potential.
00:08:59.620 And alcohol for a long time was that for me.
00:09:01.660 When I look back at how I used to think about my life
00:09:04.540 when I was drinking,
00:09:05.480 I thought I was living a big life and being successful,
00:09:08.100 but the potential that I was living into
00:09:09.800 was muted by the drinking.
00:09:12.140 Then I realized once I quit
00:09:13.340 that I started to build momentum.
00:09:15.120 I built momentum, I built confidence
00:09:16.740 because confidence is keeping the commitments
00:09:18.620 that I made to myself in private.
00:09:20.120 And over time, being consistent
00:09:21.980 started to build that confidence and build that momentum
00:09:24.880 to now I get to stay in momentum.
00:09:27.000 It's one of the most powerful forces of the universe.
00:09:28.900 If you find yourself in momentum
00:09:30.680 because you're making good decisions, stay there.
00:09:33.640 Like I mentioned before,
00:09:35.000 these four lessons didn't just make me sober,
00:09:37.440 they made me rich.
00:09:38.360 And the crazy part, it all started with one decision
00:09:41.580 to put my family first, break the cycle.
00:09:44.200 I wanted to be the person in my lineage to stop it.
00:09:48.380 I grew up around alcoholism.
00:09:49.940 I knew better, I shouldn't have drank.
00:09:51.580 and I did anyways.
00:09:53.020 If you wanna build serious wealth,
00:09:55.120 you need to be honest about what's holding you back.
00:09:57.340 I believe the world will show you where you're not free
00:09:59.340 and you may know exactly what I'm talking about.
00:10:01.760 Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do
00:10:03.820 isn't adding something new to your life,
00:10:05.820 it's subtracting something that's keeping you small.
00:10:08.700 The impact to my life, it's hard to measure.
00:10:11.100 It gave me the energy I needed to attack the day.
00:10:14.280 It gave me the mental clarity to make the right decisions.
00:10:17.040 It allowed me to get around people.
00:10:18.580 Like I'm speaking on stages like Tony Robbins, John Maxwell.
00:10:22.820 I've built this audience of almost 10 million followers on social media.
00:10:26.260 It's wild.
00:10:27.220 None of that would have happened.
00:10:28.760 That ability to think about a bigger life.
00:10:30.820 None of that would have happened if I was still drinking.
00:10:33.360 I'd still be doing what I was doing before.
00:10:35.200 And I could see that line.
00:10:36.440 I had to give something up to create the space for something more.
00:10:39.640 And look, if you really want to take this to the next level
00:10:41.840 and learn how to delete your fear of rejection in under 58 seconds,
00:10:46.140 click here and I'll see you on the other side.
