Just in time versus just in case learning.
00:00:03.280
Today I'm really excited to share with you guys a topic
00:00:05.600
that I've been thinking about for years,
00:00:07.720
about how I approach challenges
00:00:11.480
without spending a lot of time on things
00:00:13.200
that I'll never need to know.
00:00:14.400
You know, I want to share a quick story with you guys.
00:00:16.240
My brother Pierre, you know, when he,
00:00:18.200
I think he was like 25, 26 years old, he came to me.
00:00:21.280
He was a mechanic that just quit his job.
00:00:23.840
And we had a quick chat about kind of what he wanted to do
00:00:26.400
with his life and his purpose,
00:00:27.680
and he said he really loved to build homes.
00:00:29.200
He had just finished helping his friend build their house
00:00:31.440
and he thought, you know, if I could start a company
00:00:33.380
building homes for other people would just be
00:00:34.980
a really amazing thing to work on.
00:00:37.800
And I said, awesome, let's do it.
00:00:39.640
And the first thing he said was like,
00:00:40.580
I don't know how to build homes.
00:00:41.940
And that was the moment I realized, I said, good,
00:00:44.420
because no entrepreneur knows how to do anything
00:00:47.360
the first time they do it.
00:00:48.180
That's the whole point of entrepreneuring,
00:00:50.360
is creating, is becoming a creator.
00:00:52.620
But what I realized is that there's an approach
00:00:55.220
to doing it that will reduce the anxiety
00:00:57.320
and it's really about just-in-time versus just-in-case learning.
00:01:00.260
So the first thing I want to share with you,
00:01:01.600
I've got three bullets on this.
00:01:03.220
One is really about researching things quickly,
00:01:06.260
researching topics quickly,
00:01:07.620
and here's a strategy for me and how I do it.
00:01:09.460
So if I'm about to embark, let's call it Facebook ads.
00:01:12.040
It's something I've been doing for years,
00:01:13.380
but if I was just about to start doing Facebook ads,
00:01:15.920
what I would do is I would hire somebody on Odesk or Elance
00:01:19.120
or whatever site you want to choose for outsourcing
00:01:20.860
and have them go research the top material,
00:01:23.980
bring it together, put it in a format that I can digest,
00:01:26.440
And it's really having somebody else in real time,
00:01:29.940
just in time, go out to the world,
00:01:32.380
Google, research, filter, and find the best stuff,
00:01:35.480
bring it back, and then you can consume that.
00:01:37.760
So it's kind of like, what's the public information
00:01:39.980
out there on this topic, filtered through an individual,
00:01:42.860
and brought back in a format that'll allow you to scan
00:01:45.060
and really understand the conversation, the language,
00:01:48.020
the words they use, how they describe things.
00:01:50.160
What are the 1% tweaks that'll really get me the most
00:01:53.160
out of, in this case, Facebook marketing?
00:01:55.060
So that's one.
00:01:56.460
Two is consuming all the books on the topic.
00:01:59.600
Well, not all of them.
00:02:00.440
Let's call it the top three to five.
00:02:03.100
Now here's where things are different for most people,
00:02:04.980
the way they read books.
00:02:06.140
I don't read a book from beginning to end.
00:02:08.140
I actually think that that would make no sense
00:02:10.380
and a lot of this is probably predicated on my experience
00:02:13.140
going through basic education and schooling.
00:02:16.020
It's why I don't believe in just teaching me things
00:02:18.180
that I'll never know how to use,
00:02:19.760
nor reading a book from beginning to end
00:02:21.720
because it's not the way my brain works.
00:02:23.080
What I do instead is I'll go online,
00:02:24.820
and I'll research the top three to five books on a topic,
00:02:26.900
again, in this case, Facebook marketing,
00:02:28.740
and then I'll scan the table of contents,
00:02:30.600
and I'll dive into an area that's really fascinating.
00:02:32.960
Maybe I'll see a chapter on something I've never heard of,
00:02:35.340
like dark posts, what's a dark post?
00:02:37.180
And I'll dive into that, and then I'll look at other books,
00:02:39.360
and I'll look at the table of contents,
00:02:40.700
and I'll dive into different chapters.
00:02:42.160
Now, many times, 20, 30% of the times,
00:02:44.440
I will end up reading the whole book,
00:02:46.020
but the goal is to look at three to five
00:02:48.020
different bodies of knowledge and meaty books.
00:02:50.420
I call books kind of the organic food of education
00:02:53.820
and blogs and magazines, kind of the fast food of learning.
00:02:57.060
You want to dive into some really deep and in-depth
00:02:59.620
bodies of knowledge of content around a topic.
00:03:02.060
And then try to learn the things based on the chapters
00:03:04.360
that are interesting to you.
00:03:06.160
So you've got the research, you've got the books.
00:03:08.460
And then the third thing that you want to get right
00:03:10.340
for just in time versus just in case
00:03:13.200
is mentors and advisors, or really your peer group,
00:03:15.880
other people that have accomplished this.
00:03:17.940
So when I try to embark on a new project, a new company,
00:03:21.120
you know, I've started five companies now,
00:03:22.820
And every time I've started those companies,
00:03:24.480
what I do, day one, is I make a list of potentially
00:03:28.580
100 people that could support me in this initiative.
00:03:30.980
And I call it the Dream 100 list.
00:03:32.420
These are people that have been there, done it before,
00:03:34.660
and what I'll do is I'll get the research,
00:03:36.220
I'll read the books, and then when I circle back
00:03:38.380
to talk to these potential advisors or mentors
00:03:40.260
or even my peer group, I have a language
00:03:43.180
that they understand.
00:03:44.600
It's a common language because I did my homework,
00:03:46.760
I researched it, and we're talking weeks.
00:03:49.140
Like, I really believe you can go from not having a clue
00:03:52.320
how to build a home in my brother's case,
00:03:54.140
to becoming pretty proficient in about three to four weeks.
00:03:58.220
And the reason why is a lot of people
00:03:59.780
have 25 years of one year experience.
00:04:02.600
They don't have 25 years of compounded experience
00:04:06.040
and every year they push and they learn and they group.
00:04:08.580
And that's the difference between just in time
00:04:10.120
versus just in case.
00:04:11.120
A lot of people learn information so they're studied,
00:04:13.840
but they forget most of it, it's not relevant.
00:04:15.800
They're not thinking about it when they're working
00:04:17.240
through their day, when they're working on a project.
00:04:19.160
And to me, being able to consume the information
00:04:22.440
just for the moment that you need it
00:04:24.100
for what you're working on,
00:04:25.320
and bringing people around to verify,
00:04:27.040
to kind of look at your plan to make sure you're on point,
00:04:29.300
is how you will build a successful business
00:04:31.400
and truly a better life.
00:04:33.740
Instead of spending all your time consuming information
00:04:36.300
that you may never use,
00:04:37.860
you can quickly build a process,
00:04:39.380
like I shared with you right now,
00:04:40.980
to ramp up, learn, and educate yourself
00:04:43.900
when you need it, versus just in case.
00:04:46.400
So that's what I wanted to share with you guys.
00:04:47.780
I want to hear from you below.
00:04:49.020
I also want to ask you to like this video,
00:04:50.940
but below leave a comment, let me know
00:04:52.900
what new topic or topic are you working on now
00:04:55.300
that you've applied kind of this concept of just in time,
00:04:58.300
right, where you said, I'm gonna go do this thing,
00:05:00.420
you decided to take the action,
00:05:02.100
but now is the time to learn it.
00:05:03.440
Leave a comment below, I'd love to hear from you below.
00:05:05.520
I want to challenge you guys to live a bigger life
00:05:07.800
and a bigger business, and I'll see you next Monday.
