Dominion Society of Canada - Aesthetics matter

In this episode, I sit down with the founder of The Dominion Society, a new organization dedicated to fighting racism and white nationalism in Canada. We discuss the importance of putting a professional face on the movement, and what it means to be an activist.

00:00:00.000 Let me ask you, what do you need to do to get more people active?

00:00:04.260 I mean, you're going to be an activist group.

00:00:05.980 I appreciate that, and I applaud your efforts.

00:00:07.920 But how are you going to manage to get people out?

00:00:10.960 Because, you know, there's some video that came out.

00:00:12.820 I think it was in the U.K.

00:00:14.760 They wanted to take back Britain. 0.91

00:00:16.940 I think that was the movement there.

00:00:18.100 They came out.

00:00:19.340 They were carrying signs.

00:00:20.780 And many of those folks looked like, I think maybe the media made them look this way.

00:00:27.860 but KKK members almost, right?

00:00:30.460 Sure, unsavory. 0.91

00:00:31.040 And that's what they were trying to, yeah, unsavory, racist,

00:00:34.520 trying to depict them as villainous.

00:00:36.780 So how do you propose to defend against that?

00:00:39.540 This is why we built the Dominion Society.

00:00:41.660 We want to put a professional face on this movement.

00:00:44.560 I think it's previous iterations of nationalism

00:00:46.620 has been vilified exactly how you're saying.

00:00:49.140 They take some bad apples

00:00:50.560 and they paint the entire movement that way.

00:00:52.980 We're very careful about these things

00:00:54.320 and we know that aesthetics matter.

00:00:55.720 i think you can tell by the way that i present myself by the way we put together our video

00:01:00.760 content our website and so on that we're very conscientious about the the role kind of image

00:01:05.800 plays in growing our movement and i think that's why we've been so attractive to people over the

00:01:10.600 last two weeks it has just been two weeks since we started a lot of traffic on the website yeah

00:01:15.480 we're getting a ton of traffic we already have five over 500 paid members in our organization

00:01:20.440 representing every single province and one territory across the country and then we've

00:01:24.520 also gained thousands of subscribers on on five different social media platforms we're going on

00:01:29.320 four thousand on twitter we're going on three thousand on instagram and our launch video got

00:01:33.560 over a hundred thousand views on twitter alone it's good video man it's great yeah yeah we know

00:01:39.000 the important role that kind of aesthetics and professionalism play and we want to scale that

00:01:43.400 as we continue to grow we're not like people want us to give them poster designs to print out of

00:01:48.200 their you know home printers and all these things but we're we're taking things slow and measured

00:01:53.000 We want to make sure that we onboard the proper activists.

00:01:55.460 We want to make sure that all of our print materials are done professionally.

00:01:58.600 We don't want garbage black and white print or paper stuck up on poles.

00:02:02.300 We want to make sure we're following municipal bylaws, that everything we put out is to a very high standard and all of our activists are able to represent our organization effectively.

00:02:11.080 Because we know that even a few small bad apples or one moment on a street corner with a cell phone.

00:02:17.680 One guy with a Confederate flag, right?

00:02:19.720 Just one guy with a Confederate flag, and that's it for you.
