Is Canada really a nation of immigrants? By Confederation, most Canadians were actually born here, descended from those early settlers. So no, Canada is not and never has been a country of immigrants. We are a nation of settlers, explorers, and builders, and their descendants. That is our identity, and it cannot be regretted.

00:00:00.000 Is Canada really a nation of immigrants?
00:00:02.340 Canada's story doesn't begin in 1867.
00:00:04.500 For centuries before Confederation, Europeans came here as settlers and pioneers, not economic migrants.
00:00:10.400 This is an important distinction.
00:00:11.840 Settlers carve homes out of the wilderness, build towns, and create institutions.
00:00:15.900 Immigrants, by contrast, arrive in a society that's already built to take advantage of our wealth and opportunity. 1.00
00:00:20.760 By Confederation, most Canadians were actually born here, descended from those early settlers.
00:00:26.020 Let's look at the numbers.
00:00:26.800 In 1867, Canada's population was just 3.5 million.
00:00:30.860 Over 80% of those people were born here in Canada, descendants of the original settlers.
00:00:35.480 Some of those families had been here for hundreds of years already.
00:00:38.160 They weren't immigrants. 0.98
00:00:39.240 At Confederation, 97% of the population were of Anglo, English, Scottish, Irish, or French descendants.
00:00:45.520 Even a century later, in 1971, just before Pierre Trudeau's Multiculturalism Act,
00:00:50.200 Canada was still 96% European origin, about 73% Anglo-French, and the rest mostly other European
00:00:56.540 groups. Italian, Ukrainian, German, Dutch, Polish, non-European minorities combined made up only
00:01:02.200 about 4% of the population, mostly First Nations. And to be clear, immigration was never a popular
00:01:07.460 cause in Canada. Gallup polls and government surveys throughout the 1900s show most Canadians
00:01:11.480 opposed to large-scale immigration, regardless of the country of origin. When newcomers were 0.93
00:01:16.280 admitted it was in carefully managed numbers explicitly to protect Canada's ethnocultural
00:01:21.040 identity. So no, Canada is not and never has been a nation of immigrants. We're a nation of
00:01:26.400 settlers, explorers, and builders, and their descendants. That is our heritage. That is our
00:01:30.940 identity. And it cannot be regretted. Long live Canada.
