Dominion Society of Canada - Red Tory

As a result of Chris Dontremont crossing the floor from the Conservatives to the Liberals, there s a lot of talk about red Tories and their place in the Conservative Party. And I have to be honest, it s driving me a little nuts.

00:00:00.000 does anyone know what red Tory means anymore? Over the last week, as a result of Chris Dontremont

00:00:04.080 crossing the floor from the Conservatives to the Liberals, there's been a lot of talk about red

00:00:07.880 Tories and their place in the Conservative Party. And I have to be honest, it's driving me a little

00:00:12.060 nuts. This has always been a pet peeve of mine. In the modern context, the term red Tory is

00:00:17.260 constantly misused. People think it means a conservative who's a bit more red, as in someone

00:00:21.780 who's fiscally conservative but socially liberal. But that's totally backwards. In fact, it's the

00:00:26.280 complete opposite of what it actually means to be a red Tory. Someone who is socially liberal but

00:00:31.320 fiscally conservative? That's not a red Tory. That's a blue liberal. Red Toryism is a uniquely

00:00:35.860 Canadian tradition, and it's important for nationalists like us to understand because

00:00:39.280 real red Tories were not libertarian, not globalist, definitely not socially progressive

00:00:43.960 liberals in disguise. Historically speaking, red Tories were big government conservatives,

00:00:48.420 rooted in traditional values, deeply loyal to British institutions, and willing to use the

00:00:52.380 power of the state to serve the national interest. If you want examples, look at our early prime

00:00:56.520 ministers. Sir John A. Macdonald, the architect of confederation and the national policy. He

00:01:00.780 believed in tariffs to protect Canadian industry, massive state-funded nation-building projects like

00:01:05.340 the CPR, and preserving Canada's unique identity against American influence. That's a red Tory.

00:01:10.500 Or Sir Robert Borden. He led Canada through the First World War, expanded state power for the

00:01:15.320 war effort, implemented income tax conscription, and strengthened Canada's independence within

00:01:19.460 the british empire again strong national state traditional values loyalty order a red tory red

00:01:25.300 tories were nationalists who believed in a distinct canadian civilization supported by a

00:01:29.380 strong state strong identity and duty to the common good not the libertarian free market

00:01:34.420 solves everything mentality and certainly not social liberalism so the next time someone calls

00:01:38.900 a socially liberal fiscally conservative politician a red tory remember that's not red

00:01:43.620 that's not tory that's just a liberal with a different color tie real red toryism built railways

00:01:48.580 won wars, forged a nation, and defended Canada's identity, and maybe, just maybe,

00:01:53.120 Canada could use a bit more of that today. Long live Canada.
