Summary

In this episode, I talk about why I don t think Demi Moore should have won the title of "World's Most Beautiful" by People Magazine, and why I think it's because she's not being authentic. I also talk about the hypocrisy of celebrities who complain about beauty standards when they are the ones creating them for the rest of us.

00:00:00.000 Hi, and welcome to Flossom Talk, the podcast.
00:00:08.040 I'm so excited that you're back.
00:00:09.900 I had my first episode last week, and I was so excited to see the reactions.
00:00:14.000 And thank you so much for all your feedback.
00:00:15.740 It's been really helpful to me.
00:00:17.940 So in this weekly podcast, I'm talking about other things than I do in my YouTube show.
00:00:22.780 As you know, I cover a lot of the Justin Baldoni, Blake Lively legal drama there.
00:00:27.700 But here, I'm going to talk about other things, too.
00:00:30.860 And today, I want to talk about something that I'm really passionate about.
00:00:34.020 I did mention this in one of my episodes on YouTube not too long ago,
00:00:38.040 when Demi Moore won the title of the World's Most Beautiful by People magazine.
00:00:43.980 That really infuriated me.
00:00:46.680 And I'm going to go back to why that infuriated me later.
00:00:50.080 I also want to talk about the hypocrisy among celebrity
00:00:53.080 when they're complaining about the beauty standards,
00:00:55.820 when they're the ones creating them for the rest of us.
00:00:59.740 I am also so tired of hearing celebrities talking about how their beauty routines
00:01:04.280 and how they drink water and do yoga and some meditation.
00:01:07.420 And then they end up looking so young and refreshed and beautiful, which is all a lie.
00:01:13.100 First of all, I'm wondering why are we still talking about beauty?
00:01:18.400 And why are we still rewarding beauty?
00:01:20.580 I feel like these last 10 years are supposed to be like this revolution,
00:01:24.660 like, oh, beauty is so much more.
00:01:27.120 All these new ideas that's been pushed on us.
00:01:30.260 So everyone's supposed to feel beautiful.
00:01:32.700 Even if you have a big body in a different color,
00:01:35.700 it's still talking about beauty.
00:01:38.500 It's still talking about what your face looks like.
00:01:42.080 Your body can be big.
00:01:43.520 It can be misformed, whatever.
00:01:45.340 You can be brown, black, white, whatever.
00:01:48.640 But it's still about what your face looks like.
00:01:51.940 And that still makes a lot of people feel terrible.
00:01:55.120 And some people are not born beautiful in a traditional beautiful way.
00:01:59.060 And then they do a lot of things to their face
00:02:01.480 to try and look like these role models that we are being presented all the time.
00:02:05.580 And when you look at celebrities now, when you look at movie stars,
00:02:09.600 especially, I've mentioned this before, someone like Nicole Kidman,
00:02:12.940 she doesn't look like a real person anymore.
00:02:16.000 She looks fake.
00:02:18.540 And that's because she's done so much to her beautiful face.
00:02:22.160 I use the word beautiful.
00:02:23.440 She used to have a beautiful face.
00:02:25.520 Now she just looks fake.
00:02:27.480 And I don't believe her in any roles anymore.
00:02:29.820 When I'm watching a movie with Nicole Kidman,
00:02:32.320 all I can think about is like, I'm studying her mimics in her face.
00:02:36.540 Like, did her lips move at all?
00:02:38.940 No, they didn't.
00:02:39.600 Her face is saying the same.
00:02:42.840 I don't believe her in any roles anymore.
00:02:45.300 And the thing is, she could maybe get away with playing some kind of upper class woman
00:02:50.680 with some upper class problems,
00:02:52.640 but she cannot play a working class woman anymore looking the way she does.
00:02:57.160 I am not trying to bash Nicole Kidman for doing plastic surgery.
00:03:00.380 That's not my point here.
00:03:01.600 Because I think everyone should do what they feel like to feel comfortable.
00:03:05.080 But, you know, when she's talking about being authentic and being a character actor
00:03:10.420 and you're doing the opposite in front of us, you are not being authentic.
00:03:15.760 You are, you're presenting an image that is not believable.
00:03:20.760 And then, of course, the magazines are like,
00:03:22.560 oh my God, look at ageless Nicole Kidman on the red carpet.
00:03:26.340 Look how beautiful she is.
00:03:28.060 And I'm like, are we supposed to look up to that?
00:03:31.920 Are we supposed to want to look like that too?
00:03:34.240 I don't want to look like that when I'm 60.
00:03:37.060 And I'm still, you know, I'm struggling with aging.
00:03:39.920 Like, I think most women are.
00:03:41.580 It's not a fun, it's not a fun concept to look at yourself in the mirror
00:03:45.920 and then something new appears every day.
00:03:48.980 You're like, oh, I didn't have that line before.
00:03:51.140 Oh my God, my neck looks horrible.
00:03:53.860 Oh, what is that thing?
00:03:55.220 What is that stain on my skin?
00:03:57.140 I haven't seen that before.
00:03:58.700 I should do some Botox.
00:04:00.340 I should do a little neck lift maybe.
00:04:02.220 All these things that we know that the celebrities are doing,
00:04:07.100 but most of the time they're hiding it from us.
00:04:09.740 They're not being honest about why they look the way they do.
00:04:13.820 And that's one of the things that really provoked me
00:04:16.340 when Demi Moore was announced the most beautiful person by People magazine.
00:04:22.320 One beauty just is.
00:04:24.520 It's authenticity.
00:04:25.400 It's positivity.
00:04:27.740 Beauty comes out of comfort with being exactly who you are.
00:04:33.840 A real beauty for me is something that comes from the inside out.
00:04:39.280 When I encounter someone who's genuine and authentic, it's attractive.
00:04:44.320 So Demi Moore was talking about beauty and what it was to her in this interview
00:04:49.540 when she was announced to be the most beautiful woman by People magazine.
00:04:53.840 And she said, you know, it's about authenticity and it's about being yourself
00:04:58.940 and being confident in your own skin when that's exactly the opposite of what she is.
00:05:04.200 Because you're not confident in your own skin if you fix up everything on your face to look different.
00:05:10.100 And again, I'm not shading Demi Moore for doing what she's doing,
00:05:13.620 but don't pretend it's authentic because it's not.
00:05:16.640 If I would respect women in Hollywood if they said,
00:05:19.880 I did all this stuff to my face because I'm insecure and I want some more confidence
00:05:24.600 and this is the way I feel more confident.
00:05:26.840 I do a lot of plastic surgery to try to look younger.
00:05:30.880 That would be honesty.
00:05:33.180 I think beauty is honesty.
00:05:36.280 And it's not pretending that you're just aging gracefully when you're absolutely not.
00:05:42.780 And I think on top of this, a lot of the Hollywood stars have been, you know,
00:05:47.760 complaining for years about the beauty standards and what they have to live up to
00:05:51.900 to achieve that beauty and to look young forever and the ageism.
00:05:57.080 And what they're doing is making all of the rest of us feel terrible because we don't look like them.
00:06:04.040 And most of us can't afford to look like that.
00:06:07.280 Like some of them have been saying, oh, I just drink water and do yoga, whatever.
00:06:10.740 What they're doing is going to their dermatologist like three times a week.
00:06:14.640 They're doing all different treatments.
00:06:16.940 They're doing all little surgeries here and there.
00:06:20.140 They're doing, all of them are doing a lot of Botox, a lot of fillers.
00:06:24.120 You see their foreheads are completely stiff.
00:06:26.380 They all have the same lips.
00:06:27.700 They're all starting to look the same.

00:07:15.120 Gambling problem?
00:07:16.060 If you look at any women in Hollywood over 40,
00:07:34.860 they're all kind of merging into the same person.
00:07:38.860 They all have the same look on their face.
00:07:41.820 And I think that is a big problem because they're not believable on screen anymore.
00:07:47.080 I realized that the other day I was watching a British TV show where everyone just looks real,
00:07:52.080 you know, and I believe the characters and I really invest in the characters.
00:07:56.600 In Hollywood, I can't invest in the characters because I don't believe them.
00:08:00.920 I think it's so ironic when you hear someone like Demi Moore saying that beauty is about being yourself.
00:08:06.640 When she doesn't even look like herself anymore.
00:08:09.200 And of course, all of these stars can blame it on the media that everyone is expecting them to look beautiful all the time and to not age.
00:08:18.260 But the thing is, they're the ones with the responsibility out there.
00:08:22.460 They're the ones that are role models.
00:08:24.340 They're the ones that people are supposed to look up to.
00:08:27.480 And when they're just bending over for that pressure,
00:08:31.620 they are really putting more pressure on the rest of us.
00:08:34.120 And this isn't only for women that are aging, you know, in their 40s, 50s, 60s.
00:08:39.020 This is really rubbing off on the younger generation, which I think it's so sad.
00:08:44.220 Every time I see a young girl in her 20s doing a lot of Botox and having those duck lips,
00:08:49.640 I feel like, oh my God, you are going to regret that so much when you get older,
00:08:54.500 especially doing your lips like that, because they are not reversible.
00:08:58.560 You have to keep filling them up constantly.
00:09:02.340 And then when you reach a certain age, they're going to sag and sag and sag.
00:09:07.660 And you need to do surgery to kind of lift up your whole chin.
00:09:10.960 I spoke to a Beverly Hills surgeon about this, actually.
00:09:14.440 He was, we were talking about different celebrities.
00:09:16.580 He's doing a lot of different celebrities.
00:09:18.620 And we were, he was especially mentioning Lady Gaga.
00:09:22.400 A Star is Born, it's an incredible movie.
00:09:24.780 It's her most important role of her entire life.
00:09:27.580 And the entire time I'm looking at it, and anybody who knows lips, that she just looks
00:09:32.640 ducky there.
00:09:33.720 And it's unfortunate because she has nothing else done to her face.
00:09:36.160 She's so natural.
00:09:37.220 And she probably had her lips filled maybe one time or two times, likely with Juvederm or
00:09:42.460 the wrong filler.
00:09:43.400 And it just came up here and she looks like a duck.
00:09:45.620 And the whole time it's distracting away from how beautifully she sings.
00:09:49.120 When they're doing the close-ups, all you see is this.
00:09:51.820 Yeah, he was saying exactly the same as I'm saying.
00:09:54.160 You know, I could just, you couldn't stop staring at her lips because they're off.
00:09:58.900 Something is off.
00:10:00.080 And I think when someone like Demi Moore is honored to be the most beautiful person by
00:10:05.760 People magazine, that is disrespectful for everyone else who is the same age who doesn't
00:10:11.420 look like that and think that, okay, that's what I'm supposed to look like when I'm 60 years
00:10:15.860 old.
00:10:16.620 It's not fair.
00:10:17.760 And then the same celebrities are interviewed on red carpets and talking about, you know,
00:10:22.620 what they're wearing and how they look so amazing and beautiful.
00:10:26.300 Then they're like, oh, don't ask me about those things.
00:10:29.260 There was this movement a few years ago saying, women saying, ask me more or ask her more.
00:10:34.700 Like they wouldn't be degraded to just talk about their outfits on the red carpet.
00:10:39.180 Well, the reason why they're on that red carpet is to sell a product, which is themselves and
00:10:46.080 their own image and maybe sometimes a movie.
00:10:48.640 But they're there to look perfect, to look beautiful, for us to look up to.
00:10:53.960 Some of their publicists are sending all this information out before they even appear on
00:10:58.400 the red carpet, what they're wearing, who's the designer, who's the makeup artist, so that
00:11:03.260 everyone can write down all these things and all these facts and information about them.
00:11:07.140 And then they're on the red carpet themselves saying like, oh, I don't want to talk about
00:11:11.900 that to me that it's so hypocritical when that is exactly what you're selling.
00:11:18.620 I think there are still some women out there, someone like Kate Winslet, who is actually
00:11:23.100 doing who's actually letting herself age naturally.
00:11:27.220 She's not that old, obviously, but she is she looks real and everything when she talks
00:11:33.540 about things, she's real to me.
00:11:35.100 I think someone like Kate Winslet is the perfect role model.
00:11:38.160 I remember last year this I saw this interview at The Hollywood Reporter.
00:11:42.660 It was a roundtable with a lot of big actresses.
00:11:45.620 It was Jennifer Aniston, Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman, Lee Brie Larson, Sophia Vergara, Naomi
00:11:52.500 Watts and Anna Sawai.
00:11:54.940 And looking at their faces, I was like shocked when I saw the way Sophia Vergara looks now.
00:12:02.440 And then her next to Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston, too, has done so much to her face.
00:12:08.120 And then you see someone like Jodie Foster there.
00:12:10.420 And you're like, wow, there is a real person here.
00:12:13.940 And if you look at all of these people together, who's the best actress to me?
00:12:18.420 That is Jodie Foster.
00:12:19.980 And maybe it is because she looks like a real person.
00:12:23.000 So I don't know who puts the pressure on these celebrities to look the way they are.
00:12:26.820 They are always blaming it on the media and the public that there's so much pressure on them.
00:12:31.140 But it really comes down to themselves.
00:12:34.000 And I think a lot of a lot of actors that I know are very insecure and they need validation all the time.
00:12:40.040 And they're afraid of people saying that they have aged or they look older.
00:12:44.220 I think these women can look the way they want to.
00:12:46.600 But don't pretend that you look like this naturally because no one does.
00:12:52.980 The only person that I think has the best surgeon in town probably is Jennifer Lopez.
00:13:00.160 I mean, she looks amazing.
00:13:02.680 And I remember I interviewed her and I asked her about, you know, her beauty secret that everyone wants to know.
00:13:08.120 And she's like, oh, you have to wait and see.
00:13:10.260 I'm coming out with my new line.
00:13:12.840 And of course, she's selling beauty products.
00:13:15.300 And people think that, oh, if I use Jennifer Lopez cream or J-Lo's cream, I'm going to look like her.
00:13:22.180 My skin is going to be like that.
00:13:24.300 That's amazing.
00:13:25.380 I will spend a ton of money buying her products to look like her.
00:13:29.300 Well, the real reason why Jennifer Lopez looks amazing is because she's done a lot of stuff at the dermatology office and at a plastic surgeon's office.
00:13:39.680 She has done tiny little things that you can't really tell.
00:13:42.960 But let me tell you, she has done a lot because no one looks like that at 55 or however old she is now.
00:13:51.260 It's impossible.
00:13:52.180 When we look at these people and what they do to the general public, they fuel insecurities, eating disorders, body dysphormia, an increase in cosmetic procedures for teens and young adults as well.
00:14:07.080 They are selling us confidence and we are buying it.
00:14:10.760 And I think this is part of the hypocrisy that makes people really fed up with Hollywood.
00:14:15.020 Don't sell us these lies.
00:14:16.740 And the thing is, it's in their power to change things.
00:14:20.220 They are the ones that can change this.
00:14:22.300 They have the power to change this.
00:14:25.480 They are the ones that can refuse to do plastic surgery.
00:14:29.780 They're the ones that can refuse to do all these things to make their parents look younger.
00:14:34.820 And the fact is, they don't look younger.
00:14:37.620 They just look weird.
00:14:39.280 And as I said, I'm not saying that people shouldn't do whatever makes them feel confident.
00:14:43.320 But you can't blame the beauty standards on the industry when you are a part of creating these standards yourself.
00:14:50.480 You can't sell your anti-aging cream on Monday and then complain about the pressure to look young in the media the next day.
00:14:57.640 I think that Hollywood and the women in Hollywood have a responsibility to the rest of us.
00:15:02.140 I think they should be a good example for the rest of us.
00:15:05.580 And they're not.
00:15:06.460 Calling everyone beautiful isn't progress.
00:15:09.360 It's still centering around beauty.
00:15:12.200 We need a new definition of beauty.
00:15:14.720 We need freedom from it.
00:15:16.300 We don't need to feel beautiful to feel worthy.
00:15:19.680 And that's one of the things that's been some of the taglines forever in the beauty industry.
00:15:24.520 Oh, your confidence.
00:15:25.540 You feel beautiful.
00:15:26.920 No, you should feel powerful.
00:15:29.100 You should feel authentic.
00:15:30.260 Your worth doesn't come from the way you look.
00:15:33.600 The real revolution isn't redefining beauty.
00:15:36.420 It's dethroning it.
00:15:37.980 I think the most radical thing we could say is it doesn't matter what you look like.
00:15:43.060 I think People magazine should change the title of the most beautiful woman to the most accomplished woman,
00:15:49.640 to the most fearless woman, to the most evolved woman.
00:15:52.580 Because beauty is not the highest form of female achievement.
00:15:56.280 Maybe the most radical act of beauty today is to be honest.
00:16:00.760 And if we as the audience stop buying into the lie, they will stop selling it.
