00:00:30.000 I am thinking that they probably were not in the same bedroom because you would notice that there were two people there.
00:00:43.000 Hi and welcome to Flossom Talk. I'm Jashti Flohr, journalist, Hollywood truth teller and your voice of reason in the town built on delusion.
00:00:51.260 Magnus is here to help me again and if I didn't introduce him the other day, it's because I feel like everyone probably know him by now.
00:00:58.020 But I know there's a lot of new subscribers here.
00:01:00.460 So Magnus is my partner in crime and also he's worked as a journalist for over 100 years.
00:01:08.580 Thank you.
00:01:08.940 He's still covering the news for Sweden's biggest newspaper.
00:01:12.960 So anyways, I feel like I need some help with this case because I find it so traumatizing to talk about it.
00:01:20.220 And yeah, Magnus.
00:01:23.480 Well, it's still, you know, it's been a few days now, but we still sort of can't grasp this tragedy.
00:01:29.260 It's, you know, something we haven't seen since, at least since the Menendez brothers, I would say.
00:01:35.360 Yeah.
00:01:35.720 And maybe the O.J. Simpson case has similarities as well.
00:01:40.100 But what I really found, it's so hard to wrap my head around, is that a person will allegedly kill the two people in the world that loves him unconditionally and that has always been there to support him.
00:01:57.720 I think that's why this case to me is just so heartbreaking, because we know that his parents loved him so much and only wanted what was best for him.
00:02:09.820 So there are some news today.
00:02:12.160 He was he appeared in court today, but we didn't actually see any footage of him.
00:02:17.260 We only know that he was there with his attorney.
00:02:20.540 In a straitjacket.
00:02:21.500 Yes.
00:02:22.880 So he has to be protected against himself right now.
00:02:26.680 So he's under 24-7 surveillance, I think, at this point.
00:02:30.800 So outside the court today, there were hundreds of reporters, it seemed, waiting for his attorney to come out with a plea.
00:02:40.020 And that didn't happen.
00:02:41.640 No, it was postponed till January 7th.
00:02:44.740 I think that's because his attorney is probably telling him what to do, that he needs more time.
00:02:49.180 So they're not going to come back with anything until January 7th.
00:02:52.500 So legally, we won't find out more until then.
00:02:55.320 But a lot of other things have come up now.
00:02:58.100 So this morning, his siblings came out with a statement and they were saying that words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.
00:03:09.940 The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Robin Michelle Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.
00:03:16.680 They weren't just our parents, they were our best friends.
00:03:19.900 We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness and support we have received, not only from family and friends, but people from all walks of life.
00:03:30.120 Can you imagine what they're going through now?
00:03:32.580 No.
00:03:33.080 Oh my God.
00:03:33.640 Well, it's interesting now that he has this lawyer because we don't know how he is paying for it.
00:03:38.600 Because apparently he never made any kind of money on his own.
00:03:42.640 It's certainly not to pay for a high-priced lawyer like this.
00:03:45.340 And Alan Jackson was seen entering the house of the family in Brentwood.
00:03:52.140 So that means that he probably met with his siblings and he couldn't have arranged for this attorney himself from jail.
00:03:58.380 Do you think?
00:03:58.940 I mean, he was not in a mental state.
00:04:00.240 I don't think he was in the state, in that state of mind to do that.
00:04:03.680 But, you know, the Reiner's, you know, it's a big family, right?
00:04:08.040 And Rob Reiner had a brother too.
00:04:10.840 So we don't know who is doing what.
00:04:13.320 So according to California law that you found out this morning, Magnus, you can't tap into the inheritance of the family to defend yourself against crime like this.
00:04:22.100 So someone else must bank his attorney for him.
00:04:28.680 And I am, you know, people have been speculating about a death penalty.
00:04:34.800 What do you think?
00:04:37.000 Well, you know, potentially they can, the prosecutor can seek the death penalty.
00:04:41.820 But, you know, it hasn't been used in California for a long time.
00:04:44.540 And I also think that, you know, if you, if it was your sibling, even no matter what they've done, I shouldn't say no matter what, but I mean, that's another tragedy again.
00:04:57.140 Yeah, no, I feel like what we know from the family and how loving and caring they were, I don't think that their siblings would, you know, want that for themselves or for their brother.
00:05:09.760 So, yeah, I don't think that's going to happen.
00:05:12.180 So there's been some more video footage released from the night that everything happened.
00:05:17.560 There is a video inside of a store.
00:05:22.100 Convenience store, right?
00:05:22.700 A convenience store that he just went after he had left the hotel.
00:05:28.100 So this was later the next night.
00:05:31.200 So it was shortly before he was arrested, I think, right?
00:05:33.740 Yes.
00:05:34.660 So he had left the hotel in Santa Monica and he went to this area, which you told me is like really shady.
00:05:41.320 Well, it's close to Exposition Park.
00:05:43.980 And, you know, without being unfair, one can say that Exposition Park has been known for, you know, drug dealing and gang related activities.
00:05:51.720 So it's not, you know, it's not Brentwood Park, so to speak.
00:05:55.380 No.
00:05:55.800 You know.
00:05:56.580 So he went there probably, maybe we can speculate that he went there to get drugs or I don't know.
00:06:02.800 We don't know.
00:06:03.380 Well, we know that he was there and he was going into this convenience store and buying a few things.
00:06:09.840 And in this convenience store at the same time, there was a police officer.
00:06:14.660 It was interesting to see this footage because when he first, when he walked in, he was sort of walking around normally.
00:06:20.260 And then he saw this man, was it a guard?
00:06:24.600 I don't know why he, but we know now that the other man in the store was a police officer and they probably were at that point looking for him.
00:06:33.780 And he started looking over his shoulder and he was studying the man.
00:06:36.620 And yeah, it certainly looked like he didn't want to be too near that guy.
00:06:40.960 I also, when you watch the video and you see the way he was walking into the store, it was something very off about him.
00:06:48.980 Very short steps and the way he was just leaning back and forth.
00:06:53.920 And we don't know what he was up to that entire day after this tragedy happened because we know that he didn't actually check out of the hotel in Santa Monica.
00:07:04.080 He just left, right?
00:07:04.860 He just left.
00:07:05.800 And we know that the hotel said that they found lots of blood in the shower and...
00:07:13.520 And also a trail of blood, right?
00:07:14.720 A trail of blood in the bed and to the bed.
00:07:20.300 And I just don't understand how that could happen.
00:07:22.740 And there were bed sheets over the window, which is weird.
00:07:25.280 Does the hotel room have curtains?
00:07:28.080 Yeah, that's weird too.
00:07:29.720 Why did he do that?
00:07:30.720 And it's said that he, that there was so much blood and I don't understand how there can be so much blood there.
00:07:37.560 Because if, like we've tried to figure out now, if he went to this hotel and checked in there before he went to kill his parents or if he checked in after he had killed them.
00:07:49.200 And we think most likely he checked in there after he had done this crime and no one in the reception noticed that he was covered in blood.
00:07:58.080 As far as we know.
00:07:59.500 But, you know, you went on about this before.
00:08:01.700 Yeah.
00:08:02.040 But, you know, in the surveillance video that we saw of him later, he wears a big jacket, right?
00:08:07.160 Yeah.
00:08:07.720 And let's say, let's say he allegedly killed his, let's say he killed his parents.
00:08:12.160 Yeah.
00:08:14.160 If it's, it was in their home.
00:08:15.880 So why, you know, and if he lived in the guest house, why would he be wearing a jacket inside?
00:08:20.420 So even if his regular clothes were, you know, were bloody, he could have put on a jacket and closed it and you wouldn't see anything, right?
00:08:29.720 That's true.
00:08:30.460 And he could have also have brought change.
00:08:33.080 Right.
00:08:33.580 He could have gone to the guest house after this and brought new clothes with him and brought that and then changed.
00:08:40.100 And that, because in the next, that video that was from the next day, there was no bloodstains on anything that he was wearing.
00:08:46.660 And also, would he then, if he was wearing that same jacket when he went to his parents' house, would he then take off the jacket and do what he did and then put the jacket back on again?
00:08:57.260 There are a lot of little things here that I just like, feel like I want to get to the bottom of here on how this actually happened.
00:09:04.780 We know for sure now that his parents were killed at the early morning hours, the police have said.
00:09:10.920 And we were thinking, what is early morning hours?
00:09:13.720 And apparently...
00:09:14.140 Well, that would be after midnight, right?
00:09:15.980 Between sort of after midnight up to four.
00:09:18.080 So that makes sense with the timeline of his checking into this motel.
00:09:22.440 And yeah, and rigor mortis sets in two to six hours after death.
00:09:28.540 Yes.
00:09:29.000 And apparently, rigor mortis had set in when the bodies were found.
00:09:34.780 And also a thing that I found that I was trying to figure out here.
00:09:38.400 I don't know if I'm right about this, but the daughter who found the body of her father first,
00:09:44.380 she just saw him and then she called 911.
00:09:49.660 But then she didn't realize until later that her mother also had been killed.
00:09:54.940 So I am thinking that they probably were not in the same bedroom because you would notice that there were two people there.
00:10:03.340 So maybe they slept separately, which I think it's even more heartbreaking because then they weren't together when this happened.
00:10:11.020 It was more logical too, isn't it?
00:10:12.420 Because you would have seen signs of struggle, I'm sure.
00:10:15.120 You would wake up the other person when you, yeah, true.
00:10:20.320 And then they would have had some kind of sign of struggle.
00:10:24.180 But on the other hand, if this happened when they were asleep, probably that's a really good thing that they didn't even know that this was happening to them.
00:10:32.320 Oh, my God.
00:10:34.560 There's also another report here from someone called John Fawcett, who owns a gas station in the neighborhood of Brentwood, where the family house is.
00:10:45.600 And he said that he'd known the family for years.
00:10:49.320 He remembered them from their kids.
00:10:51.160 And he saw Nick late Saturday night before he killed his parents.
00:10:58.140 Yeah, there's a quote from him here.
00:10:59.340 He looks absolutely lost.
00:11:01.000 He stood there for a bit and then he continues to go west until my cameras lost visual of him.
00:11:05.160 And then he said he was just a weirdo.
00:11:06.800 She would come in always friendly.
00:11:08.440 She referring to the daughter, the sister.
00:11:11.060 She would come in always friendly and sweet to my employees.
00:11:13.860 And she would try hard to always involve him in the conversations.
00:11:17.620 But he would never really respond.
00:11:19.420 Just short answers or even a grunt, Fawcett said.
00:11:21.640 Yeah, Nick would come in and buy cigarettes, drinks and snacks, but looked progressively withdrawn.
00:11:27.540 So he was basically just walking around looking a little like lost.
00:11:31.660 But isn't this what a lot of people have said about him, though?
00:11:35.560 That, you know, he was described as strange and a little bit off.
00:11:41.560 Yeah, and he, yeah, I mean, a lot of people have come out and said really terrible things about this guy.
00:11:48.600 And I feel like I always try to look for humanity in people.
00:11:53.960 And I saw someone was mentioning this in a comment on the video we published yesterday where someone said, you know, a close family member is schizophrenic and you have to try to understand the mental illness.
00:12:06.260 And I think we have to understand that this is, he was never, he was not born a monster, you know, not that I'm trying to excuse anything that he did, but I'm just trying to understand what could drive a person to do something like this.
00:12:21.000 And I think this is where we have to have the discussion of mental illness.
00:12:24.900 You know, is a, is a person born bad?
00:12:27.240 Is a person like he was given all these opportunities in his life.
00:12:31.100 His parents loved him.
00:12:32.640 He had financial security from, he was born and I've seen interviews with him where he was constantly complaining that he didn't feel that he fit in.
00:12:44.660 And he felt so much pressure from around him that he should become something great as his father and his grandfather.
00:12:53.540 And people said that he was a spoiled brat.
00:12:55.920 Uh, I just feel like he was a very, very troubled soul that needed help and he didn't get the help that he needed because.
00:13:07.520 Well, they certainly tried, didn't they?
00:13:09.480 I mean, they did try and they didn't know what to do either.
00:13:12.620 They didn't know what to do with him.
00:13:14.780 No one really stepped in.
00:13:16.580 And, you know, I think he should have been in a home probably.
00:13:19.740 They wanted him, but he, you know, he didn't want to go to rehab anymore.
00:13:22.340 He talked about it as a sect and didn't like the rules, I guess, and the, and the steps.
00:13:26.460 And, uh, I guess the parents also had, they wanted him close and they thought they could help him by, uh, by having him on their property.
00:13:35.080 The sad thing is though that, you know, he seemed to, just a month ago, it seemed to be all right.
00:13:40.060 There was this cinematographer who stayed with the Reiners.
00:13:42.700 His name is Barry Markowitz.
00:13:46.820 And, you know, he described the family as a, as a happy family and, and Nick as on the up, right?
00:13:53.100 As on the upswing saying, you know, he participated in family meals and they were watching TV and playing with the dogs together.
00:13:59.260 And he didn't see any troubling signs.
00:14:02.440 So something must have really gone off the rails the past few weeks.
00:14:07.020 And also an interesting fact is that the police said that he was not, he did not have drug in his system.
00:14:14.240 Drugs in his system?
00:14:14.960 Yeah.
00:14:15.520 Why, when he committed this crime.
00:14:17.220 Well, that's, that's, well.
00:14:19.860 That's why I think he was so, how mentally ill are you when you can do something like that?
00:14:24.500 When you're not even on drugs.
00:14:26.380 Yeah.
00:14:26.500 And his father said in September that he had been, he'd been sober and clean for six years.
00:14:32.400 So, but that's, I don't know, it makes it even scarier, I think.
00:14:36.320 And we also know now that he wasn't invited to Brian, to Conan O'Brien's holiday party on Saturday.
00:14:44.700 His parents, or I'm guessing Rob asked Conan, can I please bring him because we're so worried about him.
00:14:50.940 We don't want him to stay by himself.
00:14:54.060 So obviously Conan said yes.
00:14:56.680 And then now I feel like everyone that was at that party are feeling some kind of emotions and a little guilt and thinking, you know.
00:15:05.140 And regret, for sure.
00:15:05.920 Yes.
00:15:06.440 Was there anything I could have done?
00:15:09.680 So.
00:15:10.780 I think both Conan, I think both Conan O'Brien and Bill Hader, who had a run in with Nick, both have expressed regret.
00:15:19.100 Yes.
00:15:20.100 And someone said on behalf of Bill Hader, the comedian who was there, who Nick went up to during this party.
00:15:28.560 And it says here that his father introduced him to Bill Hader and Bill Hader got annoyed with him because he kept interrupting him.
00:15:36.680 Interrupting him mid-conversation, I think, yeah.
00:15:38.360 And then apparently he stormed off and got really upset about that.
00:15:42.460 And now people.
00:15:43.540 Well, Nick was acting weird, too.
00:15:44.800 Apparently he was asking questions like, what's your first name?
00:15:47.420 What's your last name?
00:15:48.320 And are you famous?
00:15:50.100 Yeah.
00:15:50.280 He made a big scene at that party and he was yelling.
00:15:54.900 Apparently he was yelling.
00:15:56.120 They were yelling so loud that like the whole party heard their argument that he had with his father.
00:16:01.760 And also, apparently Nick was asked to leave the party.
00:16:06.900 So we were told that his parents left first.
00:16:11.040 And I don't know where Nick went afterwards, if he went to the guest house or if he did something else.
00:16:17.640 We don't know that.
00:16:18.820 But we know that the parents went home to bed.
00:16:21.220 And now someone on behalf of Bill Hader has said that Bill, like everyone else who saw Rob and Michelle at the party, is horrified over what happened.
00:16:29.180 And it's extremely sad that what went down actually went down.
00:16:34.020 With total respect for Rob and Michelle and their family, Bill is not going to talk about his interaction with Nick publicly.
00:16:41.880 I understand that.
00:16:43.560 You don't want to beat the story, especially if I'm sure the moment was brief, too.
00:16:48.920 Don't you think?
00:16:49.600 Yeah.
00:16:49.800 Can you imagine being dragged into this story for having a conversation with him the same night?
00:16:57.020 And then, of course, then you go through your mind, maybe if I wasn't so rude to him or maybe if I didn't tell him off, maybe things would have been different.
00:17:04.520 Yeah, maybe if I try to talk to him.
00:17:05.800 Yes, all these things must be going through your mind.
00:17:08.060 Well, this is something that also Conan O'Brien apparently is feeling.
00:17:11.080 According to sources, he's filled with guilt, right?
00:17:14.000 And regret.
00:17:15.340 And he wonders if he could have done something differently.
00:17:17.780 And, you know, this was supposed to be a party, to be a festive time.
00:17:23.620 And it ended with one of the biggest tragedies that Hollywood has ever seen.
00:17:28.340 Yeah.
00:17:28.800 And I'm sure he was close friends with Rob as well.
00:17:31.780 So it's not only that this led up to this awful moment, but also that he lost someone that he really cared about here.
00:17:39.300 And there were a lot of other big celebrities.
00:17:40.960 I think also Jane Fonda was at this party.
00:17:43.600 We don't know all the details there yet.
00:17:46.020 But for the people who were around when this argument happened, they almost think that, oh, maybe there's something that I could have done.
00:17:54.360 I think even though we have to use the word allegedly, I think that Nick didn't plan this.
00:18:00.680 I don't think there's any sign that he actually planned to do this before he went to this party.
00:18:06.500 That he planned to leave the party and then go and kill his parents.
00:18:10.020 And there's also a report here from Rob Shooter, another journalist who has his newsletter.
00:18:15.020 And he said that he actually met Nick Rayner a few years ago, that he had a meeting with him in a coffee shop here in West Hollywood.
00:18:23.960 And he said that he was shady, smelly and arrogant, barking at the staff like they were beneath him.
00:18:31.720 I remember when they got his order wrong, he flew into a rage that made the baristas shrink back in fear.
00:18:39.080 Obviously, he had a temper problem.
00:18:41.720 Yes.
00:18:41.980 We've heard that from many, many sources.
00:18:43.980 He just seemed like an extremely, deeply, deeply unhappy person.
00:18:48.460 Troubled, yeah.
00:18:49.060 Yeah.
00:18:49.620 Even when he had that movie out that he did with his father, he didn't seem like he was excited about it.
00:18:56.840 All the interviews I've seen, it's just him kind of complaining about things.
00:19:00.940 Rob Shooter also said that friends tell me this was nothing new.
00:19:04.780 He was always a mess.
00:19:06.580 A longtime family friend said, always rude, high or angry.
00:19:11.460 It never stopped.
00:19:12.860 And he also says here that his parents did everything in their power to help their son.
00:19:17.920 But as we know now, that didn't really work.
00:19:20.580 You know, I think going forward, I think this case will be used as a study of how to handle troubled kids and what you can do.
00:19:29.440 And, you know, I don't think there is a playbook on how to handle kids that are like.
00:19:40.320 Like, I feel like what he was explaining in a lot of those interviews was about like being the curse of being a Nepo baby, basically.
00:19:49.100 I think he saw that as a curse.
00:19:51.860 And that's also a reason why people don't feel any sympathy for him and probably didn't feel any sympathy for him throughout his life.
00:19:59.880 Because they were like, you got everything.
00:20:01.980 You had all the opportunities in the world and you didn't take advantage of it.
00:20:07.000 It's your fault.
00:20:08.300 You're just a spoiled brat.
00:20:09.920 And I think that's where all this rage and hate maybe came from.
00:20:14.880 I don't know.
00:20:15.780 Obviously, he's a very sick person.
00:20:18.700 But I don't know how we can explain it.
00:20:21.020 But I think when you see a lot of celebrities' children turn out to be rebels and get in trouble with the law and start using drugs.
00:20:31.660 And I think there's something there that, you know, they feel like they can't live up.
00:20:37.000 Maybe there's an emptiness there that they are trying to fill.
00:20:40.360 Because they, as you said, they feel like they have everything and they should do well.
00:20:45.340 And, yeah, maybe it's some feeling of failure.
00:20:51.540 I don't know.
00:20:52.920 It's, yeah, you say it better.
00:20:54.860 No, no, but I feel like, you know, that it's even harder for a person to not be successful when you know that everything is there for you.
00:21:06.860 And everybody expects that you will succeed.
00:21:10.700 Yeah, that too.
00:21:12.540 But, you know, there has to be some really disturbing mental illness here for someone.
00:21:16.940 Like I said in the beginning of this episode, when you are capable of killing the only two people in the world who loves you unconditionally, something is very, very wrong with you.
00:21:28.980 And I think Nick hates himself so much.
00:21:33.100 Right now.
00:21:33.460 Yeah, but I think he's hated himself his entire life.
00:21:37.220 And I think that kind of explains some of his rage and why he's always rude to people.
00:21:44.100 Because you know yourself when you're in a bad place in your life, you don't become the best version of yourself.
00:21:50.240 And you might take it out on others around you.
00:21:53.060 And I think his frustration just like, I don't know, got the best of him.
00:21:57.300 And, yeah.
00:21:57.800 No, this is so sad, you guys.
00:22:00.060 It's an unbelievable tragedy.
