00:00:42.380 Today's guest, we are talking to Representative Laurel Libby from the state of Maine.
00:00:48.420 She's garnered national attention over the past few weeks, and rightfully so.
00:00:52.780 She has a backbone of steel and moral courage that is rarely shown.
00:00:58.940 A few weeks ago, in the House of Representatives, again, in the state of Maine, she was censured
00:01:05.120 by the House Speaker, Speaker Fecto.
00:01:08.620 Now, why was Representative Libby censured?
00:01:11.820 And what does censured mean really quickly?
00:01:13.200 It means you don't have a voice.
00:01:14.560 It means you don't have the right to vote on the floor.
00:01:17.300 Again, why her constituents voted for her in the first place.
00:01:20.860 So in short, her constituents don't have a voice.
00:01:24.480 Why did this happen?
00:01:25.540 Why did Speaker Fecto do this?
00:01:27.540 Well, that would be because Representative Libby has defended women.
00:01:31.580 She is a woman who has been open in her defense of common sense and of women.
00:01:39.080 The chair understands that the member does not intend to submit an apology to the body.
00:01:43.680 That is correct.
00:01:45.680 The member will be in violation of House Rule 401, Part 11.
00:01:50.280 The member will not be able to cast a vote or speak on the floor until the member has come
00:01:56.760 back into compliance with House Rule 401, Part 11.
00:02:01.460 The member may return to her seat.
00:02:04.440 Apologize for what?
00:02:06.400 Oh my gosh, I watched this video and I'm mind blown.
00:02:10.900 This used to be the party.
00:02:12.240 Remember in 2021, the party of follow the science.
00:02:15.380 Yeah, well, that is no more.
00:02:16.740 However, this interaction, of course, in conjunction with the interaction between President Trump
00:02:22.320 and Governor Mills, which we will discuss on today's episode, look, the girls of Maine,
00:02:27.660 the girls and women of Maine deserve so much better than the leadership, again, of Governor
00:02:33.300 Mills and the Maine Democrat majority are currently offering.
00:02:37.720 We are so grateful that Representative Libby will not be bullied into rejecting, again, basic
00:02:44.280 common sense that men have no place in girls sports.
00:02:49.120 Never, ever apologize for saying that.
00:02:51.660 And she's got big news and how she's pushing back and why, again, she won't apologize.
00:02:56.080 Check out this episode with, again, Representative Laurel Libby here.
00:02:59.960 Well, Representative Libby, thank you so much for joining the Gains for Girls podcast.
00:03:04.760 It is so rare in today's world.
00:03:09.220 It's becoming more common, but the stand that you have taken and how unapologetic you have
00:03:15.800 been in a political climate where it's not welcome, it's not the cool thing to do, even
00:03:21.420 still, even with Donald Trump in office, especially in the state of Maine, I just have so much admiration
00:03:27.400 and respect for you, for your courage, for everything that you have done and will certainly continue
00:03:33.740 to do to champion women, to champion common sense.
00:03:38.720 So to be able to chat with you on the Gains for Girls podcast means so much to me and to,
00:03:44.080 of course, my listeners, my viewers.
00:03:45.940 But I just wanted to start with, look, there's this photo of you and it's you're standing on
00:03:52.700 the house floor, you've got Speaker Fecteau standing up there and you're being, I mean,
00:03:58.280 censured.
00:03:59.140 This picture to me is worth a thousand words.
00:04:02.800 I mean, I bet you never thought you'd be here as a woman having to defend yourself for
00:04:07.660 defending women.
00:04:09.060 So can you just share with us a little bit about your background and really what has caused
00:04:14.360 you to gain the national attention and national praise that you have over these last few weeks?
00:04:19.580 Yeah, first of all, I want to say such mutual respect, Riley.
00:04:23.540 Thanks so much for having me on today.
00:04:26.320 Certainly a month ago, if you told me I'd be sitting here having a conversation on your
00:04:30.760 podcast, I would have told you you were crazy.
00:04:34.020 But President Trump had just come out with his executive order.
00:04:38.360 The Maine Principals Association had made it clear that they were absolutely not going to
00:04:41.960 abide by that.
00:04:43.100 We're going to continue to allow biological males to participate in girls' sports.
00:04:46.760 And so when a male won the pole vaulting championship here in Maine, it just seemed the absolute right
00:04:55.320 thing to do to say, hey, this is what's going on in Maine.
00:04:59.160 I didn't even say in that post, it's not right.
00:05:02.520 Ironically, I just laid the facts out there and we've seen what happened since.
00:05:07.880 The fact is, it is absolutely not fair for biological males to be participating in girls' sports and
00:05:15.640 to be taking our girls' place on the podium is absolutely unacceptable any way you slice it.
00:05:26.340 And so I told Speaker Fecto the night that I was censured, we had a meeting prior to that
00:05:34.920 censure prior to when I stood in front of him in the House chamber.
00:05:38.360 And I ended the meeting telling him, Speaker, you're going to go down in history as the man
00:05:44.920 who silenced a woman for speaking up for girls.
00:05:49.300 And I think it's so critical that those of us in positions, theoretically at least, of power
00:05:54.980 do speak up for the girls, for those who are having their rights taken away.
00:06:00.780 Um, we shouldn't expect them to do that if we won't.
00:06:05.040 Wow.
00:06:05.920 That statement is, is so powerful.
00:06:08.640 And I think, I mean, I think the general public has got the picture for a long time and is
00:06:14.040 certainly again, becoming more bold and saying it out loud.
00:06:16.760 But what you just said, you are going to go down on the wrong side of history for silencing
00:06:22.880 a woman for defending women.
00:06:24.700 And that is the message that needs to be on these ads, these campaigns, these commercials
00:06:30.060 against these Democrats.
00:06:31.700 Again, I hate to make it partisan like that because I mean, it really shouldn't be a partisan
00:06:36.300 issue, but unfortunately that's, that's the reality of it.
00:06:39.380 It has almost entirely fallen on party lines.
00:06:42.120 That is the message that needs to be played on these commercials when they're running in
00:06:46.440 2026, 2028, whatever, whatever the term is time and time, time again, 24 seven, every
00:06:53.480 single TV, that's the message that, that needs to be pushed out.
00:06:57.460 So, so you spoke up again, you mentioned you didn't even necessarily at first insert your
00:07:01.460 opinion.
00:07:01.920 It was just matter of facts, laying it out.
00:07:03.960 This was a male who placed fifth against the men in the men's division.
00:07:07.240 Now he's winning state titles.
00:07:09.320 Uh, what has the response been from your constituents from Mainers across the state, uh, since taking
00:07:16.600 this stance?
00:07:17.380 Like, have you been surprised by support by negativity?
00:07:20.780 I'm sure it's been a mix of both.
00:07:23.480 I've been surprised by the volume of outreach.
00:07:27.140 Um, I'm not surprised on the breakdown.
00:07:29.240 I think it's followed pretty clearly along the lines that we see polling on the issue,
00:07:33.700 right?
00:07:33.860 It's an 80, 20 issue.
00:07:35.040 And that's pretty much what I've, what I've heard from folks that ratio.
00:07:39.260 But what has been surprising is, is the sheer volume and the number of people, um, hundreds
00:07:45.420 and hundreds of people who've reached out and said, thank you for speaking up.
00:07:49.700 Thank you for your common sense position.
00:07:51.860 Don't stop.
00:07:52.880 And that's been the most resonant message is don't stop.
00:07:56.780 Don't apologize for speaking the truth.
00:07:59.640 Don't back down.
00:08:01.160 Um, I think people are watching and they're hungry for, uh, folks to stand their ground.
00:08:07.560 The minority that disagrees with us is just that it's a minority, but they're so loud.
00:08:13.620 And, and so folks are encouraged to, to see, um, someone multiple, someone's speaking up
00:08:21.460 for the position that they hold themselves and kind of relieved.
00:08:25.140 I think to understand that they're part of the majority that believes in common sense and
00:08:30.800 that biological males should not be competing against girls.
00:08:34.280 Crazy.
00:08:35.260 You mentioned again, that, that visual it's burned in my mind of you being censured.
00:08:41.320 That wasn't your first run in with speaker of the house in Maine speaker effect.
00:08:46.460 Oh, was it?
00:08:47.060 No, my first term, uh, we was the first go around with speaker effect.
00:08:54.340 Oh, uh, he was, uh, the speaker when I was first elected and that was during COVID.
00:09:01.520 And so there was all kinds of tyranny going on in Maine, same governor, same speaker.
00:09:07.340 And when governor Mills finally lifted the mask mandate after a year and a half, uh, I went
00:09:14.880 into the state house without a mask on and speaker effect.
00:09:18.020 I had declared that the state house was still to be a masked zone.
00:09:22.680 So I, and a few others went in, uh, I did not think it was just that, uh, once the statewide
00:09:29.940 mask mandate was lifted, that people would have to mask just to competition their government.
00:09:35.500 That is, it was not just.
00:09:37.700 And so, um, I went in along with a few others to, um, show the way and say, it's not right.
00:09:44.880 And, um, encourage folks to speak up themselves as well for their rights.
00:09:50.920 So you're used to being a trailblazer.
00:09:53.740 That's what I, that's what I hear from this.
00:09:59.180 Everyone's already seen the clip at this point, but we have to play it.
00:10:03.120 Cue the clip of the interaction between governor Mills and president Trump.
00:10:08.380 Has complied immediately, by the way, that's good.
00:10:11.040 But I understand Maine is the main here, the governor of Maine.
00:10:15.880 Are you, uh, not going to comply with it?
00:10:18.920 I'm complying with state and federal laws.
00:10:21.200 Well, I'm, we are the federal law.
00:10:23.500 Well, you better do it.
00:10:24.720 You better do it because you're not going to get any federal funding at all if you don't.
00:10:28.060 And by the way, your population, even though it's somewhat liberal, although I did very well there,
00:10:32.580 uh, your population doesn't want men playing in women's sports.
00:10:36.000 So you better, you better comply because otherwise you're not getting any, any federal funding.
00:10:41.940 Every state.
00:10:43.060 Good.
00:10:43.260 I'll see you in court.
00:10:43.940 I look forward to that.
00:10:44.820 That should be a real easy one.
00:10:47.760 And enjoy your life after governor.
00:10:49.500 Cause I don't think you'll be in elected politics.
00:10:52.500 That was just like the most Trump interaction ever.
00:10:56.320 Like all of it.
00:10:57.560 Uh, of course I love how he says, you know, she says we're following state and federal law.
00:11:02.300 Obviously she's not following federal law and president Trump makes it very clear.
00:11:05.760 He says, look, I am the federal law, but, but again, following this, this back and forth,
00:11:10.340 uh, attorney general Bondi basically put Maine and a few other States on notice saying, look,
00:11:16.040 let me be clear about title nine, you know, of the channel amendments act of, of 1972,
00:11:22.620 what this means under our constitution, federal law, it means you cannot discriminate on the basis of sex.
00:11:29.120 And so, I mean, there's even a risk here to lose federal funding.
00:11:33.580 Are you surprised that governor Mills again is doubling down?
00:11:37.140 Because if, if, I mean, what I have read is right.
00:11:40.080 Maine has received over $5 billion in federal funds.
00:11:45.060 I don't know how much of that is allocated specifically to, to the educational realm,
00:11:50.060 but I mean, that, that's seems absurd to me.
00:11:53.480 And again, I would imagine too many Mainers to risk all of that.
00:11:56.860 And that this is the Hill men and women's sports that governor Mills is going to die on.
00:12:03.500 Yeah, it is a crazy Hill to die on because Mainers don't support her stance.
00:12:08.120 And, uh, you know, we do Maine relies on federal funding.
00:12:11.340 As far as the educational portion in K through 12, we're looking at $250 million a year,
00:12:17.380 uh, which is a significant amount.
00:12:20.040 Maine is a small state.
00:12:21.300 Uh, when governor Mills stepped into office, we were at about a $7 billion budget.
00:12:25.460 She's blown that up to being almost 12 billion, six years later at this point.
00:12:30.580 And so when you do the math that 250 million a year, half a billion dollars in two years
00:12:36.960 is a significant number.
00:12:38.940 And Mainers certainly don't support taking the federal government, uh, to court and spending
00:12:44.880 more taxpayer dollars to fight on an issue where it's clear we stand, uh, on the side
00:12:51.260 of, uh, girls and ensuring that biological males are not participating in girls sports.
00:12:55.900 So any way you slice it, it is the wrong stance for governor Mills to take.
00:13:01.000 And yet they've chosen to, to die on this Hill, uh, when they really don't have the support
00:13:05.900 of their fellow Mainers.
00:13:07.760 Now you have big news.
00:13:09.140 Uh, you have just dropped a, a really bombshell lawsuit in a federal court.
00:13:14.980 Uh, tell me about it.
00:13:16.920 Yeah, absolutely.
00:13:18.180 I don't believe that the speaker of the house has the constitutional authority to strip my
00:13:23.880 voice and my vote.
00:13:25.400 More particularly the voice and the vote of my constituents that elected me to represent
00:13:30.720 them, uh, by censuring me and inserting this punishment that says I can't speak or vote.
00:13:38.580 Uh, my constituents don't have any representation in the state house, uh, taxation without representation
00:13:44.980 for sure.
00:13:45.880 And so I think it's incumbent upon me.
00:13:48.940 I won't apologize for speaking the truth, but I think it is incumbent upon me to do everything
00:13:55.780 that I can to get their voice and vote back.
00:13:58.300 And so we have sued in federal court, um, and we are looking to resolve this through
00:14:05.340 the courts since it seems that the speaker, um, has no intention of being reasonable.
00:14:10.880 And really when it comes down to the math, uh, in order to actually eject me from the house,
00:14:18.400 they have to have a two thirds vote according to our main constitution.
00:14:21.580 And they don't have that, which is why they've had to do this end run around the constitution
00:14:25.820 and have a majority vote to censure me instead.
00:14:29.620 And so we'll see where this goes in the courts.
00:14:32.060 But, um, that is, I think of paramount importance to get my constituents voice back.
00:14:38.340 I love this.
00:14:39.380 Uh, I have been saying for a while now, this is how we fight back.
00:14:43.900 It's what the left truthfully has done such a good job at.
00:14:46.880 I mean, you heard it, Governor Mills said it, we will see you in court.
00:14:49.560 They threaten and they pursue lawsuits like nobody's business.
00:14:53.600 So to, to be on, I mean, the offense like you're doing is incredible.
00:14:58.800 I wish everyone would follow whether you're an elected official, uh, who has been targeted
00:15:03.720 in the same way that you have, whether you're just an everyday person who has been targeted.
00:15:08.680 Uh, of course I know it's, it's a financial responsibility.
00:15:11.440 It's a huge time investment and an emotional investment at that.
00:15:14.860 There's a lot that goes into it, but I believe this is the past path forward.
00:15:19.000 So I could not be more excited for you.
00:15:21.520 Uh, but more importantly, as you, as you mentioned, uh, for your constituents to have their representation
00:15:27.260 back in office.
00:15:28.220 So what's the status of your censure now?
00:15:31.040 Are you still just like being totally stonewalled here?
00:15:35.320 Yeah, I went into the state house last Tuesday, one week following my censure.
00:15:40.260 And I sat there in the chamber and it's a really weird feeling to know that if we had
00:15:45.080 a roll call or an issue come up that I, you know, felt passionately about that, I would
00:15:50.100 have no ability to speak to it or vote on the record.
00:15:54.480 It's very surreal.
00:15:56.100 And really dystopian.
00:15:57.960 Yeah.
00:15:58.320 When you, when you think about it and the left wants to talk about again, I hate to
00:16:04.340 make it partisan, but we take it back to, you know, prior to the election and all of
00:16:08.960 these women's who, who, you know, declared and claimed and asserted that they were going
00:16:13.060 to lose rights under president Trump to me, again, looking at your state leadership and
00:16:18.880 what has happened to you, uh, excuse me, this is of course in direct conflict with what
00:16:25.180 they're saying.
00:16:26.040 Well, actually it's, it's true what they've said, but it's not because of Trump.
00:16:29.320 It's because of, of Democrat, democratic leadership at that.
00:16:33.200 So I want to play two more videos for you and I want to get your thoughts.
00:16:36.600 Uh, let's cue the video of, uh, governor Gavin Newsom here.
00:16:40.720 It's like you right now should come out and be like, you know what?
00:16:44.040 The young man who's about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports,
00:16:48.180 that's that, that shouldn't happen.
00:16:50.100 You as the governor should step out and say no, no.
00:16:52.080 Well, and I appreciate, but like, would you do something like that?
00:16:54.740 Would you say no men in female sports?
00:16:56.200 Well, I think it's an issue of fairness.
00:16:57.860 I completely agree with you on that.
00:16:59.500 So that's easy to call out the unfairness of that.
00:17:01.840 There's also a humility and a grace that, you know, that, that, that these poor people
00:17:06.040 are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression.
00:17:08.900 And the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time
00:17:14.440 with as well.
00:17:15.340 So both things I can hold in my hand.
00:17:17.600 How can we address this issue with the kind of decency that I think, you know, is inherent
00:17:22.700 in you, uh, but not always express.
00:17:25.660 Newsom apparently started the democratic party civil war of 2025.
00:17:30.660 Let's play one more video of house minority leader Hakeem Jeffries.
00:17:34.620 I want to ask about, uh, California governor Gavin Newsom's comments, uh, saying that Democrats
00:17:40.600 were in the wrong for allowing transgender athletes to compete in female and girl sports.
00:17:44.940 Um, what is your response to that after Democrats had opposed the women and girls in sports?
00:17:49.940 I haven't seen his comments.
00:17:55.000 What Democrats opposed was unleashing sexual predators on girls throughout the United States
00:18:04.440 of America.
00:18:04.940 Honestly, like, I don't even know what conclusion he's trying to draw there.
00:18:09.380 So if you're as confused as I am and don't fret, I mean, I think the majority of Americans
00:18:15.280 are in the same boat here.
00:18:16.280 What is he even trying to say?
00:18:17.800 But let's start with, let's start with governor Newsom.
00:18:20.460 I mean, are you surprised by this?
00:18:22.860 He's really the first one of the few prominent Democrats who has come out and, and at least
00:18:28.340 acknowledge that it's not only unfair.
00:18:30.100 He says it's deeply unfair, but then goes on to say not unfair enough for him to actually
00:18:35.040 do something about it because he doesn't want to be perceived as mean is what I got
00:18:38.660 from it.
00:18:39.720 Yeah, absolutely.
00:18:40.580 A fair amount of word salad there that meant absolutely nothing except for highlighting that
00:18:46.420 he does understand, uh, that this is unfair policy.
00:18:50.800 Now, I don't think we're going to see Gavin Newsom doing anything about it.
00:18:54.280 Um, and it's the equivalent of, you know, uh, which way is the wind blowing here?
00:19:00.300 Gavin Newsom is a smart political animal and he understands that 80% of Americans do not
00:19:08.220 agree with biological males and girls sports.
00:19:10.060 And so he is taking, uh, you know, a little bit of a common sense position here.
00:19:15.360 Again, I don't, I don't think he spoke to change of policy in that statement, but he did
00:19:21.020 acknowledge that it's unfair.
00:19:22.520 And we'll see if people are satisfied with that much of a concession, but it certainly
00:19:28.120 has thrown the Democrats into a tailspin because they don't know what to do with that.
00:19:33.220 No, no.
00:19:34.480 As made very clear by Hakeem Jeffries, again, the connection of wanting men out of women's
00:19:43.240 locker rooms and women's sports to them saying that will unleash sexual predators.
00:19:48.720 I assume he's an insinuating that we want to like inspect genitals.
00:19:54.780 That's always what they go to.
00:19:55.900 But again, that is absolutely not the case.
00:19:58.300 Of course, that would be utterly invasive and a total violation.
00:20:02.220 Every bill that I have seen put forward and every policy that we have seen by these large
00:20:06.620 governing bodies to, uh, I guess, uh, quantify and qualify sex.
00:20:12.580 It would be either a birth certificate, um, which I don't believe is satisfactory because
00:20:17.260 in all but six States, you can alter your birth certificate cheek swabs.
00:20:21.140 We've seen that in some places, which is a, you know, a simple saliva test, uh, to determine
00:20:26.480 sex, uh, or a routine physical that every single athlete, I believe in every single state has
00:20:33.180 to already go through anyways.
00:20:35.700 So again, the whole inspecting genitals thing is, is just silly, uh, and totally, uh, I mean,
00:20:42.260 a farce, it's a lie.
00:20:43.780 Last thing for you, um, you really have been so courageous, so brave, but again, that's not
00:20:51.820 to say it doesn't come with the pressures and the negative.
00:20:55.600 So how, I mean, how have you been handling that, especially in your personal life?
00:21:00.280 You know, we see how strong you've been on social media, but again, that that's not all
00:21:05.000 of you.
00:21:05.440 So how have you been handling all of the negative that comes with the stand you've taken?
00:21:10.360 You know, I've, I've gained experience over the last number of years getting really thick
00:21:14.280 skin, but I also know that there's one source of truth and, um, I'm connected to that source
00:21:20.440 of truth and know that we're all here for such a time as this.
00:21:25.340 And so honestly, it's an easy stand to take.
00:21:30.260 Um, sure there are hard days, but, um, I'm standing for truth.
00:21:34.460 You're standing for truth.
00:21:35.980 And, uh, we're representing an army of people out there who believe and know, uh, that there,
00:21:44.100 there are biological imperatives and facts.
00:21:47.040 And at the end of the day, God doesn't make mistakes.
00:21:49.780 And so, um, it's an easy call to make, to speak up for truth and to stand on really firm
00:21:57.300 ground when I'm doing so.
00:21:59.500 I love that you mentioned, uh, for such a time as this Esther 414, uh, because the front
00:22:04.700 half of that verse, which is often forgot about, it's often left out of the discussion,
00:22:09.420 but it says for, if you remain silent, uh, goes on to say you and your father's family
00:22:15.340 will perish, but I think that's very fitting, uh, for the stand that, that you have taken.
00:22:20.980 Uh, and just as Christians, we were not saved to be silent.
00:22:24.120 Uh, so thank you for being such a wonderful role model for me.
00:22:27.900 Truthfully, you are a heroine of mine.
00:22:30.740 Uh, but again, broader for women and girls for humanity, actually, it's not limited to
00:22:35.760 just women and girls.
00:22:36.680 Thank you for being a role model to, to people across the world.
00:22:41.140 Uh, we are so appreciative of you.
00:22:43.820 Thank you.
00:22:45.340 Again, we appreciate you guys.

00:22:59.500 again, it's, it's monumental.
00:23:01.400 It's foundational.
00:23:02.340 It goes beyond again, how she has personally been impacted, but how it's impacted her constituents.
00:23:08.120 That is a selfless leader.
00:23:09.280 So, uh, again, you can follow her at Laurel underscore Libby on X, uh, keep up with what she's doing
00:23:14.660 because really she's a hero.
00:23:16.640 I know I said it, but I don't say that lightly.
00:23:18.660 I really mean it.
