00:01:49.560 And go watch last week's episode with CEO Ben Spell.
00:01:53.160 But for this week's episode, we've got some exciting things going on in the state of Georgia.
00:01:59.220 Georgia has quite the political landscape.
00:02:02.240 We, of course, know how President Trump, he won in 2016, he lost Georgia in 2020, and
00:02:09.140 he won it again in 2024.
00:02:11.400 So lots of exciting things going on there.
00:02:13.740 Even this week, there is a bill being heard, the Riley Gaines Act, which you can imagine
00:02:19.800 what this bill does.
00:02:21.040 It keeps men out of women's sports.
00:02:22.840 But it is just the biggest honor to have a piece of legislation named after me.
00:02:29.220 But I understand and I recognize there are really, it being named after me is, there are
00:02:36.220 far more people who fought much longer, much harder than I have.
00:02:40.220 But nonetheless, this is just a huge honor, bringing this to the forefront in the state
00:02:45.020 of Georgia, and of course, across the nation.
00:02:47.240 Which, this executive order that was signed by President Trump, I'm so encouraged to see
00:02:52.420 the state of Georgia, what they're doing, how they're continuing to take action, because
00:02:55.780 again, that executive order doesn't absolve states from taking the necessary measures
00:03:01.300 to protect women and girls.
00:03:03.420 We are going to talk to today, the lieutenant governor of Georgia, discussing this bill,
00:03:08.680 discussing the state of Georgia and his future plans in the state.
00:03:12.660 So check it out here, the interview with Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones.
00:03:17.240 Well, Lieutenant Governor, I am so grateful that you're on the Gains for Girls podcast.
00:03:23.020 It feels very timely talking to you now.
00:03:25.640 We were just discussing off camera, and I've, of course, personally been following the state
00:03:29.640 of Georgia, what you've got going on there.
00:03:31.940 There are two fantastic bills moving forward through the Georgia legislature that would both,
00:03:37.960 they both of them would codify President Trump's executive orders to define sex-based words
00:03:42.840 and keep women's sports female.
00:03:44.420 One of them is SB 92, sponsored by Senator Dolezal, and the Riley Gaines Act, which is
00:03:51.060 just the biggest honor ever, sponsored by Speaker Burns.
00:03:54.440 So again, both fantastic bills.
00:03:56.400 I wanted to ask you, though, why in the world, this comes to a shock to a lot of people that
00:04:01.600 Georgia hasn't done this yet.
00:04:03.300 This hasn't been a measure that's been done.
00:04:05.600 So why in the world do you think it's taken this long for Georgia to bring these bills forward?
00:04:10.800 Well, great to be with you, Riley.
00:04:14.100 It was good seeing you a couple weeks ago at the executive order at the White House, and
00:04:18.040 just appreciate everything you're doing for women's sports.
00:04:21.440 You know, it's a great question.
00:04:23.480 This is something that we were moved to do two years ago in the Georgia Senate, and obviously
00:04:30.820 I'm the lieutenant governor of the state of Georgia, and my role as that is to preside over
00:04:34.660 the president of the Senate chambers, and we got it done, and for whatever reason, we
00:04:40.660 were at the House vote.
00:04:43.240 You know, never could get the numbers there, but I think you helped inspire it, Riley, more
00:04:48.480 than anything else.
00:04:49.500 You know, you came and testified there in the state of Georgia and really put a face with,
00:04:56.000 you know, the story behind what went on at Georgia Tech during the NCAA National Championship
00:05:02.200 swimming meets, and, you know, and all the other things that's going on at the national
00:05:08.540 level.
00:05:08.920 I think the election of President Trump has given some of these weaker Republicans a
00:05:13.640 little more confidence about, you know, wading into some of these cultural wars, but it should
00:05:19.840 not have taken so long, but, you know, we're glad that what is moving forward, as you well
00:05:24.340 know, Senator Greg Dolezal has done a lot of hard work on this issue, and we've been very
00:05:29.860 passionate about it.
00:05:30.800 So our version passed out of the Senate last week, and there will be a version coming out
00:05:37.100 of the Senate.
00:05:37.540 There'll be a version coming out of the House, but at the end of the day, it's going to get
00:05:41.020 done, and we'll have you down and make sure that you get the needed credit, and we appreciate
00:05:49.700 all your effort and what you've done for women's sports.
00:05:53.680 That's very kind.
00:05:54.780 It's definitely been a collective effort, really spearheaded by leadership.
00:05:58.820 Like you have shown Speaker Byrne, Senator Dolezal, all fantastic people who, really on a personal
00:06:04.960 level, I love and from a professional level that I really just admire.
00:06:10.300 Georgia is a unique state as it pertains to this bill and these protections that ultimately
00:06:16.600 will ensure women of opportunities, because it's almost like they've been protected under,
00:06:22.640 but not necessarily codified through law.
00:06:25.100 So what do you expect to happen with these bills, and how can we, as Georgians who listen
00:06:32.660 to this and watch this, but really more broadly as the general public, how can we ensure they
00:06:38.960 get to Governor Kemp's desk to sign?
00:06:40.580 Well, I think the momentum is there, and I think it's going to happen, and you're right.
00:06:46.840 Georgia is a unique place, but it gives you a good feel for what the rest of the country
00:06:53.920 is talking about.
00:06:54.700 Here in Georgia, if you would have told me when I first got elected to the state senate
00:06:59.380 a few years ago that we'd have to be waiting in cultural wars here in Georgia and really
00:07:04.860 have to put some effort behind getting measures done just to, there's just our common sense
00:07:10.340 measures that should have never really got into the mainstream limelight, but it's indicative
00:07:17.660 of what has gone on nationally, where things like this, whether it's boys and girls sports
00:07:24.920 or whatever else, have been shoved down the American public's throat to make you, to force
00:07:31.940 you into having to act on a measure like this and putting it in statute, because the last
00:07:38.980 thing we want to do, I think you're probably like me and 90% of the other people here in
00:07:43.720 the country, what people do day to day, it doesn't concern you nor it bothers you, but
00:07:52.360 when you start having it shoved down your throat and you look to be the one who is at fault for
00:07:58.720 not believing in such measures like that, it makes it necessary, and that's what we moved
00:08:08.860 to do, and all the help that you've given us so far has been great, it's going to get
00:08:15.480 done, it's going to get on the governor's desk and get signed, and we just greatly appreciate,
00:08:20.880 you know, I'd like to tell you, let's come and lobby and all this other kind of stuff,
00:08:24.660 but I think all the hard work's been done, and it's just a matter of having the respective
00:08:30.160 floor debates and then voting them out.
00:08:33.840 We'll certainly be watching and cheering you on and definitely keeping the pressure there.
00:08:41.560 You mentioned the unique political landscape of Georgia.
00:08:46.080 I mean, I think of even the few past elections that we've had.
00:08:49.580 If I'm not wrong, President Trump, he won Georgia in 2016, lost in 2020, won again in 2024.
00:08:57.400 You have two Democratic U.S. senators, Republican majorities in the legislature, and of course,
00:09:03.280 a Republican governor.
00:09:04.960 I mean, what is the political environment in Georgia that has led to such big swings in
00:09:10.980 election outcomes?
00:09:12.620 Sure.
00:09:13.040 I mean, look, Georgia's always been very independent, you know, minded state.
00:09:16.820 I will tell you that, and we are, you know, a very historically very conservative state.
00:09:24.880 But, you know, this, you know, a lot of people, 2020, there was a lot of tension that was put
00:09:29.600 on 2020 because of what happened with the presidential race and those U.S. Senate races.
00:09:35.400 Now, I will tell you, there was a lot of questionable things that went on during the 2020 race, and,
00:09:41.780 you know, we don't have to rehash those, but there were a lot of questionable things that went
00:09:45.480 on during that race, not just here in Georgia, but in other places, and I'm not afraid to
00:09:51.780 talk about that.
00:09:53.040 But Georgia, I think, is shown, illustrated that it is a red-leaning state just based on
00:09:59.120 the 22 cycle and this 24 cycle.
00:10:03.720 In 22 is when I was running for lieutenant governor.
00:10:05.820 Every one of our constitutional offices were retained by Republicans.
00:10:10.240 You know, we had a very close Senate race between Herschel Walker and Warnock, and Herschel
00:10:17.040 almost got him there in the end, but he was unable to.
00:10:20.240 But I think in 26, you're going to see a very popular administration.
00:10:24.520 I think you're going to see an opportunity for us to take that U.S. Senate seat back.
00:10:28.440 And then also in the governor's race, I think we will retain the governor's seat as well.
00:10:34.540 But it doesn't change the fact that, yeah, Georgia can have a little independent streak about it.
00:10:40.240 Yeah, you mentioned Senator Warnock, Reverend Warnock, which I speak for myself when I say
00:10:46.600 that I believe Reverend to be a bit of a stretch.
00:10:49.980 They will both have to vote soon, I imagine, on a fairness and women's sports bill in the U.S.
00:10:57.240 Senate.
00:10:58.180 Both of these senators, both Georgia senators, they failed the stand with women scorecard
00:11:03.740 by voting against even allowing a vote to be taken on this same bill last year.
00:11:08.540 So, I mean, what do you expect of their votes?
00:11:11.460 Of course, this is an issue that you've seen at the local, state, and federal level.
00:11:16.300 Definitely not among the general public, but again, at least in terms of elected representation,
00:11:21.000 it's been pretty partisan.
00:11:23.740 Do you expect their votes to fall in line with that of Democratic Party values?
00:11:30.340 You know, that's a great question, Ted, quite frankly.
00:11:35.420 I think you might have a split vote, to tell you the truth.
00:11:38.600 I could see definitely Ossoff with him coming up in 26 and him trying to really thread the
00:11:45.940 needle on being the middle-of-the-road moderate Democrat, which he's not, but he is at least
00:11:53.440 playing that role right now.
00:11:55.780 I could see him voting for it, and I could see Warnock voting against it, you know, but
00:11:59.660 this ought not to even be a question, quite frankly.
00:12:03.560 I mean, like I said, this goes back to just a common-sense issue that the Democrats seem
00:12:09.360 to be, you know, we actually had two Democrats that broke with their leadership and voted
00:12:13.380 with us on your bill last week in the Senate.
00:12:17.460 And so there are a few people who are breaking away on the Democratic side from this issue,
00:12:22.780 but there's a lot of them, particularly in Democratic leaderships, is doubling down on
00:12:27.000 this issue.
00:12:28.040 Look, if they want to double down on it, you know, I welcome that because it makes their,
00:12:33.140 it makes, it weakens the individuals and it weakens the parties as well.
00:12:38.220 And these, these issues, several other ones who are big issues in the eyes of the American
00:12:45.220 public, like I said, if they want to keep doubling down on, on, on these types of culture wars,
00:12:51.100 and then, you know, it might be a long time before they get back into a position of power.
00:12:56.340 That's the truth.
00:12:57.720 The only, the only people that it has proven to be effective for their tactics of doubling
00:13:03.600 down are, I would say, conservatives or really, again, common sense, everyday Americans.
00:13:09.020 And you mentioned these, these issues that, that really shouldn't be issues.
00:13:13.320 I was so disheartened to see Senator Warnock's vote on the, the Lake and Riley Act, of course,
00:13:20.320 from, from his state where this tragedy occurred.
00:13:23.700 So, so really horrific things.
00:13:25.640 Last question for you, Governor Kemp, he's serving his last term as Georgia's 83rd governor.
00:13:31.600 Uh, so I wanted to ask you, you know, what is the gubernatorial in 2026 in the state of
00:13:37.360 Georgia look like?
00:13:38.280 Can we potentially see a Lieutenant Governor, Burt Jones, uh, run for governor?
00:13:44.900 Oh yeah.
00:13:45.520 The possibility is definitely there.
00:13:47.180 Uh, you know, I've just been telling everybody that, that I was going to get through this legislative
00:13:50.800 session because obviously there's going to be a lot, you know, if I, if I make that jump,
00:13:55.860 there's going to be so many guys, you know, seven or five or six, seven, eight guys could
00:14:00.020 be many, who knows that we'll try to run for the Lieutenant Governor's spot and, and there'll
00:14:04.620 be more people, uh, who will get into that governor's race.
00:14:08.040 Um, but yeah, if I, I'll make a decision, a final decision in the, in the, in the coming
00:14:14.360 months, but I am going to get finished with legislative session in April.
00:14:18.600 Take the wife and kids on a little spring break and, and, uh, chit chat about it a little
00:14:23.300 bit.
00:14:23.560 Cause it is a big decision, but you know, I'm one of those, I love the state of Georgia
00:14:27.360 and I love, uh, what's going on right now in the state of Georgia and I've positioned
00:14:31.820 myself in a, in a leadership role.
00:14:34.000 And I think, uh, if given the opportunity, sit that next role pretty well as to, as, as
00:14:39.220 well.
00:14:39.640 And so, uh, so yeah, so we'll look at it and Hey, look, if I, when I get ready to announce
00:14:44.700 Riley, I just need you to come down here because you got a bigger fan base and then what I do,
00:14:49.600 uh, here in the state.
00:14:51.020 So I just need you down here to help, uh, help kick off the, uh, the campaign for us
00:14:55.340 when, when, when, and if we get ready to pull that trigger.
00:14:58.340 Hey, well, well, I'll, I'll speak totally selfishly when I say, uh, I would love to see
00:15:03.620 a Burt Jones run for governor.
00:15:06.340 Uh, so just very grateful for you.
00:15:07.980 We'll continue to, to amplify and cheer you on.
00:15:11.140 Of course, we're going to be following both bills, um, SB 92.
00:15:14.660 And of course the Riley Gaines act, uh, as, as they hopefully get on governor Kemp's desk
00:15:20.120 to sign into law.
00:15:21.100 So thank you for, for everything.
00:15:23.040 We're just very grateful for you.
00:15:24.560 Sure.
00:15:25.300 Absolutely.
00:15:25.820 Well, we're going to get them done.
00:15:26.880 We want to have you down to, uh, you know, help, uh, celebrate, uh, you know, women's
00:15:31.660 athletics and us defending women at athletics.
00:15:34.160 I've just wondered where all the feminists has been.
00:15:36.700 I can remember the title nine fights and, and, uh, and they had been very quiet on this
00:15:41.400 one.
00:15:41.640 And that's kind of, yeah, when I, when I find out, I'll let you know.
00:15:46.920 All right.
00:15:47.480 Sounds, sounds good.
00:15:48.500 Good to be with you and a good scene and best of luck in the near future.
00:15:52.520 You rock.
00:15:53.040 Thank you.
00:15:53.700 Thank you.
00:15:54.800 Thank you guys for tuning into the gains for girls podcasts.
00:15:57.700 Uh, I'll be testifying on the Riley Gaines act tomorrow.
00:16:01.120 So we'll be sure to put some clips out on online and on social.
00:16:04.220 So you guys can, can amplify and continue to put the pressure on these people.
00:16:09.080 Uh, you heard a little bit from LG Jones about what this, the state of Georgia is, uh, but
00:16:15.840 we need to keep putting the pressure on these people, especially those weak, weak Republicans
00:16:20.220 who need some pressure to do the right thing.
00:16:22.420 Sad that that's what it requires.
00:16:23.900 But unfortunately, uh, that is the state that we live in.
00:16:27.700 Uh, as always appreciate you guys being here outkick.com, check out all things gains for
00:16:33.520 girls, like, and share these episodes.
00:16:35.300 And again, encourage you to check out good ranchers, uh, watch last week's episode to
00:16:40.200 learn a little bit more about good ranchers and why you should invest.
00:16:43.700 And yes, I say invest, uh, because that's what you're doing.
00:16:46.900 You are investing in your health.
00:16:48.900 Uh, and as we have learned, especially over the last presidential campaign cycle, uh, there's
00:16:55.400 not a lot of things that are more worthy to invest in than your health.
00:16:59.780 So again, appreciate you guys.
00:17:01.420 And we will see you again next week on the gains for girls podcast.
