00:08:54.660 bio for him off of a government website believe it or not retired sergeant mike rude is a 28

00:09:01.540 year veteran of the canadian armed forces who served as a paratrooper for the canadian airborne

00:09:06.660 regiment princess patricia's canadian light infantry and with the canadian rangers his

00:09:13.460 operational deployments included Afghanistan, Somalia, and Bosnia. Mr. Rood has been a member

00:09:19.700 of the Corner Brook branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Now, this is my favourite paragraph

00:09:25.400 because it really encapsulates the kind of man that Mr. Rood is. Mr. Rood became aware of a Korean

00:09:33.660 War veteran who was not being provided support to commemorate a fallen soldier in the town of

00:09:38.780 St. Anthony, Newfoundland. Mr. Rood made all the necessary arrangements for three paratroopers from

00:09:44.640 the Royal Canadian Regiment and the Canadian Rangers. He also brought in a colour party,

00:09:50.400 honour guard and a band of sea and air cadets to appropriately commemorate the fallen soldier at

00:09:55.940 a Remembrance Day ceremony. Mr. Rood frequently speaks with the veteran to this day and that

00:10:02.720 tells you exactly the kind of gentleman that retired Sergeant Mike Rood is. I'm going to

00:10:07.800 bring him in hopefully we've got his um his uh technical issues figured out but if not well we

00:13:43.960 i was in uh cornwallis nova scotia in my uh basic training wow amazing that's something i always

00:13:53.480 wanted to do i was an air cadet i don't know if you knew that i mean it was a terrible one but i

00:13:57.320 do know how to shine a boot at least and uh yeah march a little bit yeah probably better than me

00:14:03.160 but that's you know the point well definitely better than the current canadian military can

00:19:29.340 it's a pill form yeah so anywhere where there was uh where there was malaria in the world

00:19:35.420 then it was given to uh canadian forces so yeah so i'm going to play a clip of this and we've also

00:19:47.780 episode and i highly recommend you do um it's it is hard to watch but i mean this is the stuff

00:19:53.700 that's happening in our military here we go when canada first sent troops to somalia in 1992

00:20:00.500 mefloquine was experimental it hadn't yet been approved for use in canada as w5 first exposed

00:20:07.780 back then the military made a deal with the drug company hoffman laroche the drugs would be supplied

00:20:14.980 to the Canadian military as part of what was supposed to be a strictly monitored clinical trial.

00:20:21.860 Health Canada sanctioned a special mefloquine safety study that meant the only way Ottawa's

00:20:27.540 defence headquarters could use this experimental drug legally was under the controlled conditions

00:20:33.300 of the study. Here's the document. But that study was never conducted. Not only were the side effects

00:20:41.220 not documented by the defense department but the soldiers in somalia weren't even told that they

00:20:46.900 were part of an experimental trial all of this in a mission that spiraled out of control

00:20:55.380 somalia was an unmitigated disaster

00:21:08.740 you know um like well you and i talked a bit today and it's it's like the canadian government

00:21:34.340 the side effects that they were seeing in uh their fellow soldiers and nobody did anything

00:21:39.700 and as a matter of fact i believe you have a lawsuit so yeah take us take us through that

00:21:50.720 the advocacy that you're doing to bring awareness to this mefloquine scandal so they it all started

00:22:06.620 somalia and uh op deliverance was the name of it it was supposed to be a humanitarian mission

00:22:12.820 right they sent the world's special forces to somalia to aid in humanitarian aid right to um

00:22:24.080 some of the um some of the uh the food deliveries and stuff were being um were being looted by the

00:22:35.540 by the warlords or taken so they brought us in to to go do that or to separate it and to make sure

00:22:42.680 the food aid went to went to the people that were you know from the famine and everything

00:22:48.220 and uh but so the op deliverance was the name of that operation but i also believe at the same time

00:22:57.880 they had another operation and it was to see what we were doing on the drug so the drug um

00:23:05.040 played a major role in everything that happened in in somalia there was 28 significant incidents

00:23:11.920 i believe right and uh and and it just and it played out and when they when the somalia incident

00:23:22.960 broke they started shredding documents right the somalia files they started shredding them

00:23:29.600 they weren't shredding them because they had mike rude's name or they had kyle brown or they had

00:23:37.160 clayton matchy's name they were shredding they were shredding documents that showed what they

00:23:43.060 were doing in somalia what we're actually doing i believe that it was that it was in fact

00:23:49.140 an experiment to see what we'd do on the drug because all kinds of stuff came from there and

00:23:56.420 it's uh all kinds of stories right a lot of a lot of things went on things yeah a lot of terrible

00:24:03.260 terrible things yeah so say for instance at the contingent headquarters say for all the countries

00:24:10.320 that are involved right so they they had a headquarters that everybody meets at or goes to

00:24:15.380 and at that headquarters they had a kill count on the wall and kept track of how many kills from

00:24:22.580 each country right and does that sound like like a humanitarian mission to you

00:24:39.800 and once again we were there on a humanitarian mission right so you know the drug you know after

00:26:34.480 but i was trying to get into a dimensions retreat right uh to help with my

00:26:41.220 my depression my suicidal tendencies whatever and uh i fought to get in there of course dva

00:26:52.400 played games and so did the psychologist in my opinion right oh okay you'll go no yes no

00:26:58.520 it's all guaranteed no and then nothing right then they weren't sending me but a company picked it up

00:27:04.600 and they sent me so if it hadn't been for my going to that dimensions retreat we probably

00:27:10.840 wouldn't even be having this conversation right now because you know when i when i got the phone

00:27:16.680 call so prior to my going to dimensions i was trying i owed 35 000 in taxes and so i was trying

00:27:26.200 to come up with a solution with them and told the lady can can you like call me after my after i go

00:27:35.320 to this retreat so i'll be in a better mindset in a better place so she was waiting for that

00:27:43.480 and um but i did get to go to that retreat and because of it when i got a phone call

00:27:51.640 you know a month ago to say that i owed a hundred and one thousand dollars to veterans affairs

00:27:59.400 canada due to an overpayment that occurred from january 2017 until january 2026

00:28:12.680 for nine years they overpaid me with the from you know calculating that'd be a thousand bucks a

00:28:19.800 month they're saying but yeah so if they corrected it in january i haven't seen any difference in my

00:28:26.920 pay i haven't noticed any difference of getting a thousand dollars less right if that's what they're

00:28:33.400 saying um it's i i think it's all related to the mefloquine but had i got that phone call before

00:28:43.000 dimensions i guarantee you i would have would not have made the end of the day on when they called

00:28:50.600 me right yeah and even that being said when they when i got the call from veterans affairs to say

00:28:58.680 that i had an overpayment of 101 000 which by the way i call full bs on that one right they're

00:30:07.580 teen to death and i said now listen i said listen buddy everything that happened in somalia was due

00:30:15.280 to the drug 100 and then he came back and said no no health canada found that the drug was uh safe

00:30:23.300 and effective and then i'm like no you're full of it right it's not true and uh then then i said

00:30:32.260 why don't you tell me where to meet you and i'll drive wherever you are and then you can tell me

00:30:39.420 in person what you think of me and then he said well i why would i want to meet you because you're

00:30:46.260 a dishonorable person so then i you know then i launched i lost it and hung up but yeah you know

00:31:34.800 when they added my name to the lawsuit with Howie Saxon Henry in Toronto. And they were,

00:31:42.380 they're linked in with John Phillips. And that's, John Phillips was on the residential school

00:31:53.880 settlement which is the largest uh settlement in canadian history so those two law firms were

00:32:01.000 taking us forward and so that was in january my name was added to the thing in march i got a phone

00:32:09.240 call to say that we've narrowed you down we have you down as one of the 10 there's 10 people that

00:32:16.840 were going to use as advocates to go forward with the lawsuit so then in april they were going to

00:32:26.580 have a town hall meeting in kingston ontario and at the time you know i couldn't drive more than 15

00:32:35.760 minutes on my own kind of right i never never did no trips never did nothing right had to be with
