00:00:00.000
good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the alberta roundup i'm your host rachel emmanuel
00:00:14.400
we have so much news to cover today so let's take a look at what we're going to be talking
00:00:17.760
about on today's episode alberta says the crown shouldn't prosecute firearms owners who purchased
00:00:22.640
their guns legally we're going to dive into the details on that one the province launched a public
00:00:27.920
task force to respond to addiction homelessness and public safety in edmonton canadian hunters are
00:00:33.600
safe for at least six more weeks and finally the united conservative party say a vote for ndp leader
00:00:39.440
rachel notley is a vote for justin trudeau all that and more happening now on the alberta roundup this
00:00:44.960
first story is arguably the biggest in alberta politics this week the alberta government is
00:00:49.520
recommending that crown prosecutor don't press charges against firearms owners who purchase
00:00:54.480
their guns legally before prime minister justin trudeau's order in council in may 2020 a news
00:01:00.160
release from the province on thursday said alberta is taking back constitutional jurisdiction for
00:01:05.040
handling charges under the firearms act and alberta's crown prosecutors will now determine
00:01:10.160
whether or not to pursue charges the release reads quote while respecting operational independence on
00:01:15.920
individual cases the new protocol issued by the attorney general provides prosecutors with guidance
00:01:22.080
on how to evaluate the public interest when determining whether or not to pursue charges
00:01:27.120
the province's new protocol says it's not in the public interest to proceed with prosecuting a
00:01:31.200
charge of possession of a banned firearm one one the accused lawfully obtained the firearm
00:01:36.320
or prohibited device prior to may 1 2020. two the firearm or prohibited device was reclassified as
00:01:43.360
prohibited on may 1 2020 and three when the accused has not been charged with any other offense
00:01:49.920
related to the possession or use of that firearm you guys are likely familiar with some of these
00:01:54.880
details by now in may trudeau announced that he was banning more than 1500 models of firearms
00:02:00.560
including guns explicitly used by sport shooters hunters and farmers the government put an amnesty in
00:02:05.760
place until october 2023 but when that amnesty expires albertans who still possess their legally
00:02:11.040
acquired property could face jail time under the criminal code alberta justice minister and attorney general
00:02:16.320
tyler shandro says albertans should not automatically be considered criminals because of a weapon they
00:02:21.520
purchased legally quote this new protocol for prosecutors will help prevent otherwise law
00:02:26.560
abiding individuals from facing criminal charges and potential time in jail at the same time law enforcement
00:02:32.960
and prosecution resources can be prioritized for actual violent and repeat offenders while not further
00:02:39.040
clogging our already busy courts moving into our next story here the united conservative party say
00:02:44.080
ndp leader rachel notley's comments calling on prime minister justin trudeau to quell the alberta
00:02:49.360
sovereignty act were no slip of the tongue earlier this month the ucp demanded an apology from notley
00:02:54.960
after she said trudeau should squash the sovereignty act legislation notley said quote i think if they
00:03:00.560
revoke the act that would be the right thing to do she said in response to a question about whether
00:03:05.120
prime minister justin trudeau should revoke the bill ndp spokesperson benjamin aldrich immediately walked
00:03:10.400
back those comments he said notley was referring to the provincial government aldrich told the cbc quote
00:03:15.840
to be clear the alberta ndp is calling for the provincial government to revoke bill one but we are
00:03:20.640
not calling for the federal government to disallow it but alberta's chief government whip brad rutherford
00:03:25.840
said notley's comments were no slip of the tongue quote rachel notley clearly called on justin trudeau to
00:03:30.880
revoke an alberta law and override the will of alberta's democratically elected legislature miss notley
00:03:36.400
didn't even bother proposing any amendments to the bill she wants justin trudeau to revoke albertans
00:03:41.520
deserve better than this from the opposition ndp who have a duty to contribute to the legislative
00:03:46.320
process ultimately all mlas in the alberta legislature are there to serve albertans not
00:03:52.240
justin trudeau the ndp might want to remind themselves of that moving into our next story
00:03:57.360
here you guys probably remember some of these details from a couple of weeks ago the city of edmonton
00:04:02.400
won't say by which form racist comments were made against edmonton mayor and marit sohi so he said
00:04:07.920
he received racist attacks in response to the city's joint decision with the edmonton downtown
00:04:12.320
business association not to install a christmas tree this year at the association's annual holiday
00:04:17.360
light-up event in response to a query from true north a city spokesperson said quote i'm unable to
00:04:22.480
confirm whether the mayor received messages by phone email mail or social media now the edmonton
00:04:27.200
downtown business association also said it was the subject of racist remarks the association's
00:04:32.720
executive director panina mcbryan told me that she received a combination of racist xenophobic and
00:04:38.800
some just outright nasty foul and aggressive language she said such comments were left on the organization's
00:04:45.120
social media accounts voicemails email and comments under media articles explaining the decision
00:04:50.880
not to have a christmas tree this year she also pointed to one letter to the editor published in
00:04:55.200
the edmonton sun which appears to have been deleted the letter says the edmonton downtown
00:04:58.880
business association should have adopted canada quote as is not with a dream of making it what
00:05:03.920
you chose to leave or perhaps you shouldn't have left your home country another letter published in
00:05:08.240
the edmonton sun shame the mayor for cancelling the tree quote then to make matters even worse
00:05:14.000
he says that people who don't agree with him are racist because they are upset once again shame on you mayor
00:05:20.160
as i've previously told you guys the edmonton downtown business association
00:05:23.600
decided not to have a christmas tree at its annual holiday event this year for the first time since
00:05:28.240
1999 and the city of edmonton said it wouldn't step in to provide a tree setting the environmental
00:05:33.840
impact of cutting down and transporting a mature natural tree moving into our next story here i have
00:05:39.120
a feeling some of you are going to be a little bit excited about this canadian hunters are safe for
00:05:43.760
at least six more weeks at least that's what one conservative mp told me when the house of
00:05:47.680
commons rose for christmas break this week pausing the public safety committee study on bill c21 now
00:05:54.240
we have talked about this a couple times i'm sure you guys are somewhat familiar with the details by now
00:05:58.320
during clause by clause consideration of bill c21 a couple of weeks ago the liberals introduced an
00:06:03.360
amendment to ban hundreds more models of semi-automatic shotguns and rifles including those primarily used
00:06:09.040
by hunters farmers and sport shooters considering the outcry over the legislation a bloc quebecois
00:06:14.240
mp on the committee put forward a motion on tuesday suggesting that the committee hear from
00:06:18.640
more witnesses about the specific amendment the bloc quebec quat mp christina michaud suggested two
00:06:24.000
more meetings to hear from witnesses but it's safe to say that conservative public safety critic
00:06:28.240
raquel dancio was less than impressed by this suggestion take listen to her remarks now what's
00:06:33.280
really frustrating for us as conservatives is this work should have been done by the liberal
00:06:36.960
government and their vast resources but now the committee as you know mr chair this is now our fourth
00:06:41.840
week talking about this we're going to have to go back sort of flip-flop through this backwards in
00:06:46.800
this committee process because they didn't do their homework and now they're sort of turning it around
00:06:51.920
and saying well okay we'll do it in two meetings so we have two meetings we barely scratched the surface
00:06:56.800
of the people that are impacted by this ban again the largest uh hunting rifle ban in canadian history
00:07:01.520
here uh we barely scratched the surface for people who don't know two meetings as you know mr
00:07:05.680
chairs about 12 witnesses 12 witnesses 12 witnesses i don't think that that's nearly enough so we just
00:07:13.360
feel that any suggestion that two meetings is adequate uh is i'm gonna say it i do feel that
00:07:20.240
it's offensive to the people that are going to be impacted by this it does not give them the dignity
00:07:24.400
of having a seat at the table because the house is now risen for christmas break the committee won't
00:07:28.880
get back to this amendment for another six weeks so you guys are safe with your guns for a little while
00:07:33.360
longer at least okay guys moving into the controversy of the week common sense calgary is calling a city
00:07:39.600
of calgary proposal to limit election signs ridiculous and self-serving ahead of a provincial
00:07:45.760
general election this spring calgary city council wants to limit election signs according to a motion
00:07:51.760
before the city's executive committee signs are placed temporarily for the purpose of elections
00:07:57.200
and sign proliferation creates visual clutter and unsafe distractions along highways
00:08:03.040
the motion says the majority of temporary election signs are made from single-use corrugated plastic
00:08:08.720
quote corrugated plastic signs are not accepted for recycling through city of calgary facilities
00:08:14.080
thereby generating high volume landfill waste council has declared a climate emergency
00:08:19.760
and has adopted a single-use item reduction strategy
00:08:23.440
for christy kohler executive director of the citizens advocacy group common sense calgary
00:08:28.400
says candidates in municipal elections rely on name recognition in the absence of political parties
00:08:34.000
quote incumbents as sitting councillors have huge amounts of taxpayers funding to help elevate their
00:08:38.320
profile and name recognition for many challengers their privately funded signage is their only chance
00:08:43.600
to compete this is an entirely self-serving proposition that will favor incumbent councillors
00:08:48.800
during the next election and should be dropped okay guys what we're watching in the weeks to come
00:08:53.200
the alberta government has launched a public task force to respond to issues of public safety
00:08:58.080
homelessness and addiction in the city of edmonton the government says the edmonton public safety and
00:09:03.600
community response task force will be funded by an 187 million dollar commitment as a response to
00:09:10.000
a city that's been hit especially hard here's mental health and addictions minister nicholas millican
00:09:14.720
explaining what the task force will do today we are establishing the edmonton public safety and
00:09:20.000
community response task force to improve public safety and tackle social issues meanwhile edmonton's
00:09:27.040
police chief dale mcfee has been very supportive of the government's move take listen to his remarks i
00:09:32.160
think this task force certainly as somebody that's been on the mental health and addictions task force
00:09:37.040
the human trafficking task force and the minimum standards and homeless this needs leadership and
00:09:41.840
leadership needs political will the fact that we have open-air drug use everywhere in front of the mall
00:09:48.480
that's not acceptable but what's also not acceptable is somebody with an addiction isn't going to go
00:09:54.400
straight to the justice system because that's not the answer for some of these folks but there's also
00:09:58.800
a disproportionate number of the criminal element that are influencing and preying on these people
00:10:03.040
so what you see here now is leadership real leadership to say this is enough to me that's encouraging
00:10:09.600
because not only does it take the enforcement arm in relation to it but it also needs the resources of
00:10:14.160
where to take people and you need to give people options and you need to have some accountability to
00:10:18.480
those options and that accountability doesn't have to be the justice system so that's what we're hoping
00:10:22.720
will happen quickly and i think at the end of the day we also have to work towards zero tolerance for
00:10:28.960
open-air drug use but not by using the justice system as the hammer but using as a multi-discipline
00:10:34.320
approach i've been around a long time this is the first time that i've seen the right ministers take the
00:10:39.680
right approach in my opinion to actually drive change and we need that public will to say you
00:10:44.800
know we got to try something different because every time i turn around there's another approach
00:10:49.680
that's not an evidence-based approach and unfortunately there's a lot of good people
00:10:53.200
working in this space what i see here is bringing coordination to something new that we don't have
00:10:58.800
and using all those resources as you see many of them here right now to say we're going to tackle
00:11:03.680
this differently and finally ending our show on a lighter note as always the united conservative
00:11:08.640
parties say a vote for ndp leader rachel notley is a vote for trudeau ucp mla rebecca schultz has the
00:11:14.240
breakdown a vote for rachel notley is a vote for justin trudeau and let me explain why federal ndp
00:11:21.360
leader jagmeet singh is rachel notley's boss now the ndp is a unique political party for conservatives
00:11:28.800
and liberals provincial and federal parties are separate that is not the case for the ndp in the ndp
00:11:35.440
it's all one big happy family so if you're a member of the federal ndp you become a member
00:11:40.800
of the provincial ndp and vice versa so if the ndp was a company jagmeet singh would be the president
00:11:48.640
and ceo which makes rachel notley kind of like a regional manager i'm pretty good on politics
00:11:54.240
schultz goes on to remind voters that federal ndp leader jagmeet singh opposes oil and gas mining
00:11:59.520
and modern agriculture while trudeau wants to phase out the oil sands now i'd love to tell
00:12:05.040
you what the alberta ndp think about this video but unfortunately they don't respond to media
00:12:09.040
requests from true north okay guys that's all i have for you today thank you so much for tuning in
00:12:13.600
if you support independent media you can visit us over at donate.tnc.news i'd also like to let you
00:12:18.880
guys know that there won't be an episode next week saturday as it is december 24th christmas eve
00:12:23.680
so i hope you guys all have a very merry christmas and i will see you in two weeks time thanks
00:12:27.440
