00:01:11.440 is intervening in both these cases here is what premier kenny had to say about it no because they're
00:01:16.320 not you're pulling the plastic phone there i don't think you're you're i don't think you believe

00:01:43.360 the plastics industry is very focused with the support of provincial governments

00:02:02.480 the queen passed away on thursday afternoon at belmoro castle while surrounded by her family
00:02:07.120 she leaves behind a legacy unmatched in history as the longest reigning british monarch
00:02:11.360 in february elizabeth became the first british monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee
00:02:15.520 marking a historic 70 years on the throne a lot of us feel much sadness at her passing she certainly
00:02:21.360 embodied many qualities we seem to have lost today in society like grace duty and sacrifice moving
00:02:26.880 back into alberta politics the province is increasing support to its chief firearms officer
00:02:31.280 by over 700 000 this year to speed up the process of gun licenses and transfers since the federal
00:02:37.360 government announced an impending ban on handgun sales and transfers albertans have rushed to buy
00:02:42.400 or transfer handguns while they still can justice minister tyler shandro said the funding will enable

00:02:52.720 authorizations to carry and more all while from alberta here's what terry bryant had to say about it
00:02:59.200 today's announcement will support us in adequately staffing our office with the focus on hiring local
00:03:05.600 to better serve albertans it will significantly enhance our level of service to align with the
00:03:11.280 expectations of albertans in keeping our community safe and it will support our work which helps
00:03:17.440 sustain economic activity associated with lawful firearms ownership in alberta through inspections
00:03:22.960 and approvals of shooting ranges as well as supporting firearms businesses let's move into the
00:03:27.600 controversy of the week alberta's mount royal university is canceling its ice hockey intramurals to be more
00:03:33.440 accessible and inclusive in a statement the university said it conducted an analysis to work
00:03:37.840 towards quote achieving an accessible and inclusive program where all feel they belong
00:03:42.400 mount royal said evidence shows ice hockey creates a sense of belonging for some but there are still
00:03:46.880 critical areas that require improvement i'm wondering if the people that were not able to play ice hockey
00:03:52.000 now feel included because nobody gets to play at all what do you think what we're going to be
00:03:56.240 watching in the weeks to come edmonton is the latest city to consider a ban on single-use plastic items
00:04:01.360 the city of edmonton is considering banning businesses from offering customers single-use
00:04:05.200 plastic items like shopping bags and foam cups the proposed bylaw would reduce the number of single
00:04:10.000 use items used and discarded in edmonton and begin to quote shift the habits of edmontonians
00:04:14.960 visitors businesses and other organizations to make reusable alternatives their default choice
00:04:20.160 end quote the bylaw would work by mandating a minimum fee for new paper shopping bags and new
00:04:24.960 reusable shopping bags as well customers must request utensils for single-use accessories made of any
00:04:30.160 material restaurants can't just hand them out and there would be an outright ban on plastic
00:04:34.560 shopping bags and styrofoam service wear it's probably worth noting a 2011 research paper which
00:04:38.960 found it takes more than four times as much energy to manufacture a paper bag as it does to
00:04:44.000 manufacture a plastic bag okay guys let's jump into our ucp leadership race update albertans have
00:04:49.200 started to receive their ballots to vote in the ucp leadership contest of course there's also the
00:04:53.600 option to vote in person on october 6 the same day the new leader and primer will be announced
00:04:59.040 for those who aren't sure how the preferred ballot works be sure to check out my explainer online
00:05:03.200 this week danielle smith released highly anticipated details of her alberta sovereignty act we've talked
00:05:07.840 about this so many times you guys know what this is by now but for first-time listeners the alberta
00:05:12.000 sovereignty act essentially would bar any federal legislation deemed harmful to alberta and its
00:05:16.400 interest danielle smith has said it could be used to push back federal covet 19 vaccine mandates
00:05:21.360 gun control legislation and bill c69 which of course overhauls the regulatory approval process for major
00:05:27.920 energy projects or as danielle smith calls it the no more building anything in alberta ever again
00:05:33.520 without federal approval bill so here's how the sovereignty act works according to new details
00:05:39.200 released by smith this week smith said each motion would include identification of the federal law
00:05:44.560 deemed to be in violation of the constitution or charter the constitutional explanation for making
00:05:49.200 that claim an explanation of the harms on albertans a description of the specific action the
00:05:54.400 province would take to refuse the federal law and a declaration of non-enforcement if a court stays
00:06:00.400 or deems an alberta sovereignty act special motion to be unconstitutional the government and the
00:06:05.200 legislature would decide whether to amend and or continue with a special motion understanding the
00:06:10.400 legal implications such a decision could cause unfortunately for her smith's new details did not
00:06:15.280 appease her opponents four of them banded together and held a press conference on thursday to show their
00:06:19.680 unity in opposition to the proposal travis taves brian gene rajansani and leela ahir all attended
00:06:25.840 here's what travis taves had to say but the sovereignty act is not the way we win it's been
00:06:32.080 pitched as the cure-all for alberta's position within the nation but the act is a false bill of goods that
00:06:38.960 is simply more political bluster will not deliver the expected outcomes and will create anger and
00:06:45.040 disillusionment amongst albertans notably absent from the press conference were rebecca schultz and todd
00:06:50.320 lowen gene said all the candidates were invited except for danielle smith and it was a political
00:06:55.680 decision whether or not to attend following the press conference schultz released a statement saying
00:07:00.480 she doesn't support the act because it quote doesn't do what people say it's going to do end quote
00:07:05.600 she did not say whether she would vote for the sovereignty act if it reached the legislature floor
00:07:10.160 in a video posted to social media lowen said the press conference showed disunity and desperation
00:07:14.640 quote i wish those candidates would stand up against prime minister justin trudeau as strong
00:07:18.880 as they stand up against the sovereignty act end quote all right guys let's end with our alberta
00:07:23.840 politics funny moment of the week global news was forced to delete a tweet after premier jason kenney
00:07:28.960 said a mountain was named after queen elizabeth ii when it was actually named after queen elizabeth
00:07:33.200 of belgium he was of course referencing mount queen elizabeth located on the border of alberta and british
00:07:37.760 columbia it was named after the belgium queen in 1916. don't worry premier we all make mistakes
00:07:44.320 i should know okay guys that's all for me today thanks for tuning in if you support our work at
