00:00:00.000 Alberta Premier Daniel Smith has said she's open to pulling out of new federal programs
00:00:04.300 or avoiding federal consultations when they aren't in the province's best interests.
00:00:08.920 The Premier published a letter on Thursdays that she had sent to her cabinet ministers
00:00:12.480 outlining the strategies they must use when they're dealing with the federal government.
00:00:17.360 Let's take a look at that now. In the letter, Smith said, quote,
00:00:20.480 there may be cases where Alberta will seek to opt out of new federal programs if they aren't in
00:00:24.580 Alberta's best interest. The new Premier said Ottawa often avoids meaningful engagement with
00:00:29.120 Alberta. That has to change, she said. Ottawa must provide open, honest, and early communication
00:00:34.360 with the province. Quote, if the federal government does not honor cooperative federalism through
00:00:39.120 meaningful engagement, we will simply not participate in their consultations. This
00:00:43.960 announcement comes after Premier Smith's speech at the United Conservative Party annual general
00:00:48.160 meeting last weekend, in which she said Alberta under her leadership will not enforce federal
00:00:53.500 laws or policies that interfere in Alberta's jurisdictional rights as outlined in the
00:00:57.660 Constitution. Take a listen to her comments from last week Saturday.
00:01:00.400 Finally, you see Ottawa problem. There can be no doubt that the current NDP Liberal Alliance
00:01:05.860 is just the latest in a long line of Ottawa governments that have frustrated the legitimate
00:01:12.780 aspirations of hardworking Albertans. That stops now. When Ottawa announces policies and laws that attack
00:01:20.720 our economy or violate the rights of our people, or when Ottawa seeks to take control of our sovereign
00:01:27.020 areas of provincial jurisdiction, our UCP government will not enforce those laws and policies in this
00:01:34.120 province, period.
00:01:57.020 And let me, and let me be very clear, I will never ever apologize for standing up for the people of Alberta and the province that I serve.
00:02:04.120 And let me be very clear, I will never ever apologize for standing up for the people of Alberta and the province that I serve.
00:02:19.120 So, we will pass the Sovereignty Act. Work has already begun on crafting it. We worked on it earlier this week at the caucus retreat. We still have further work to do, but I have asked for it to be ready by the time I take my seat in the legislature. We will then introduce it, and we will pass it, and we will use it to push Ottawa back into its own lane every single time that they step out of line and intrude on our constitutional rights. Alberta will no longer ask permission from Ottawa.
