00:00:00.160 Hey everyone, welcome back to the Alberta Roundup. I'm your host, Rachel Emanuel.
00:00:04.840 I know I said that we probably wouldn't have an episode this week, and while there won't be one
00:00:10.420 on Saturday, I wanted to come to you midweek because there were a couple of things that
00:00:14.660 happened this weekend that I think we need to discuss. On today's show, Alberta Premier
00:00:19.480 Danielle Smith sent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau back to Ottawa with his tail between his legs.
00:00:24.860 That, among the Prime Minister's other awkward and embarrassing stampede moments. And you're
00:00:31.780 going to want to stick to the show until the very end because I have a big announcement.
00:00:36.480 All that and more happening now on the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:48.580 So I suspect you guys saw some of this online over the weekend. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
00:00:54.100 was in town for the annual Calgary Stampede. He comes every year and has a small visit. And this
00:01:00.760 year, his visit was followed by one hiccup after the other. Midway through his visit, the Prime
00:01:07.260 Minister sat down with our Premier Danielle Smith, who told him Alberta has no plans to comply
00:01:13.060 with his target for a net zero power grid by 2035. Here's what that looked like.
00:01:18.820 We would like to establish a working group so that we could talk about how we might be able
00:01:23.180 to achieve a net zero power grid. But I've indicated to the Prime Minister that that is
00:01:29.060 not possible by 2035, which is the federal target. We've been told that by our experts
00:01:34.120 here. We also know that an emissions cap or emissions reduction, such as the one that's
00:01:39.840 been proposed of 42% by 2030 would also result in essentially a production cap, which we don't
00:01:46.460 think is realistic or feasible as well.
00:01:48.560 Of course, that wasn't the Prime Minister's only embarrassing stampede moment, nor was
00:01:53.440 it far from the worst. My personal favorite is this one when he tried to cook a very, very
00:01:59.700 undercooked pancake. You guys might have seen this circulating over the internet on the weekend,
00:02:04.500 but it's too good not to watch again and again and again. I was discussing this moment with
00:02:10.340 my colleague Cosmin Georgia on the daily brief earlier this week. And he said it probably happened
00:02:15.800 because the Prime Minister has never cooked his own food, which seems like a fairly obvious answer
00:02:21.220 because I think anyone over the age of 12 would know that that pancake was not ready to be flipped.
00:02:27.440 And just when he thought things couldn't get any worse for Trudeau's failing stampede visit,
00:02:31.740 a couple of protesters snuck their way into a private liberal campaign rally. And just after his speech
00:02:38.240 finished, they yelled, is Uncle Klaus proud of you? And get the weff out of Canada. Here's what that
00:02:44.940 looked like. Is Uncle Klaus proud of you? I know. Get the weff out of Canada. Get the weff out of Canada.
00:02:57.480 Of course, this is all made that much more comical because every year the Prime Minister comes to the
00:03:02.640 Calgary Stampede for his obligatory visit. I kind of suspect that he doesn't really want to be here.
00:03:08.140 And the PMO keeps his schedule very quiet so that protesters can't show up to his events.
00:03:13.000 And yet every year protesters manage to find out about it and sacrifice their weekend time to go
00:03:19.180 and tell the Prime Minister exactly what they think of him. Okay guys, and I did want to do a weekly
00:03:24.620 comment roundup because there won't be an episode on Saturday and you guys had so much to say about
00:03:29.700 last week's show and I wanted to get to some of those comments. But before I do that, I do have a
00:03:34.500 bit of a bittersweet announcement for you all. We are going to be taking a couple weeks off from the
00:03:39.940 show so there will be no Alberta Roundup until probably October as I am going to be taking
00:03:45.460 some time off to welcome my first child into the world. It is sort of a natural time for us to take
00:03:51.500 a break anyways because it is summer and things are slowing down. However, it is a little bit
00:03:56.600 unfortunate for me as I am going to be pregnant throughout the entire summer. That being said,
00:04:01.920 instead of having a weekly question this week, for all of you experienced parents out there,
00:04:07.100 I know there are many of you, please feel free to comment on the video below and give me your best
00:04:11.780 parenting advice for newborns. I'll be honest, I'm quite unpleasant to be around when I am overtired
00:04:18.100 and I expect that is going to be the case for several weeks and months to come. So any and all
00:04:23.480 advice is appreciated. Okay, now that we have that aside, let's take a look at some of your comments
00:04:29.000 from last week. Most of you commented about Alberta Premier Daniel Smith's decision to say that the
00:04:33.840 matter with CBC is closed after they said they regret their erroneous reporting. User Everett
00:04:40.880 Humphrey said, that is her choice to be noble to close this and move on to other issues. But like she
00:04:46.780 stated, the NDP needs to do the same and apologize. I agree with a full retraction and do it publicly
00:04:53.320 from all parties involved so people really see the faces behind this. User J. Chalf Kenny said,
00:04:59.520 consider the issue closed. They distributed false information that is damaging to Danielle Smith's
00:05:05.380 character. If we truly want change in this country, they need to be held to account above and beyond
00:05:11.040 an apology. Okay, and since we're going to be taking a couple weeks break from the podcast, as we come
00:05:16.220 close to our one year anniversary of starting the podcast, I started it in August of 2022. So we're
00:05:22.400 getting close to that date now. I wanted to address another comment, which really raised what I think has
00:05:27.460 been the most controversial part of the Alberta Roundup over the past year. This is now my third
00:05:33.140 time addressing this matter on the show. But some of you have seemed really upset with my use of the
00:05:39.600 phrase you guys. And another user piped up last week to voice his dislike of it. Canada is ruled by
00:05:46.060 clown said she overuses the term guys and it makes her sound like a fifth grader. So I don't know if it's
00:05:51.780 a Western Canadian thing, a local to wherever she is thing, or just a her thing. But I find it really
00:05:57.360 detracts from her credibility to be calling everyone you guys. I did know a woman from Medicine Hat
00:06:03.880 who would have been in her late 30s when I knew her, who I think also did this. So maybe it's
00:06:08.920 regional, but frankly, it hurts the ears. Central Ontario here, and I haven't heard this since I was
00:06:14.420 in primary school, nor have I ever heard a credible adult use it. Well, to start, this is the Alberta
00:06:20.980 Roundup and we don't want any of that Eastern Canada condescension on this show. I know that those of you
00:06:27.360 who live in Ontario love to look down at us Westerners, but we will not accept that on this
00:06:32.880 show. I'd also note that your argument of it being a regional thing falls apart because I actually grew
00:06:38.360 up in the Niagara region, born and raised for over 20 years. So we probably didn't even live that far
00:06:43.300 apart from each other. So I don't think it's a regional thing. I will concede that I slightly
00:06:48.320 overuse the phrase you guys, I could probably throw in a okay, everyone, or maybe I should quote our
00:06:53.800 beloved prime minister and say, okay, people kind here and there. I think maybe it's because I have
00:06:59.920 so many brothers and I have a lot of male cousins. So I've just spent a lot of time around guys my
00:07:03.960 whole life. So it just comes off very naturally to me. But I think that your reaction is a little
00:07:10.260 over the top. And I don't think I sound like a fifth grader. I actually don't even think you think
00:07:14.320 that, or you probably wouldn't have watched my show in full. So I'm sorry to say it's here to say,
00:07:20.680 I'll try to use it a little bit less, but you're just going to have to get used to it. And when we
00:07:24.820 finally get some Alberta Roundup merch, which I have been asking for, we're going to get the phrase
00:07:29.760 you guys splashed across it. And I promise to send you a shirt for your troubles. Okay, everyone,
00:07:34.880 that's all I have for today. Thank you so much for tuning into today's episode of the Alberta Roundup.
00:07:40.800 Please don't forget to comment your parenting advice on the video below. And as I said, I will see you
00:07:47.080 all in October. So thank you so much for your support over the last couple of months.
00:07:51.040 Have a great rest of your week and God bless.
