00:00:00.000 And that's why I did it.
00:00:09.000 Oh my goodness, we've got a round of trouble microphone.
00:00:13.000 It's Justin Trudeau messing with my mic.
00:00:17.000 He told us that I've never met a mic I didn't like.
00:00:20.000 Harrison Faulkner for True North in downtown Toronto outside the Steam Whistle Brewery
00:00:25.000 where Pierre Polyev just held his first downtown Toronto rally.
00:00:28.000 One of the themes that has emerged throughout this leadership campaign
00:00:31.000 is the fact that Pierre Polyev as the frontrunner
00:00:33.000 has been attracting huge crowds at his rallies across the country.
00:00:37.000 Here in Toronto it was no different.
00:00:39.000 I had the chance to speak to some of his supporters
00:00:41.000 to ask him what it is about his campaign that excites them
00:00:44.000 and why they're supporting Pierre Polyev for leader of the Conservative Party.
00:00:47.000 What is it about Pierre's campaign that excites you and that makes you want to support him?
00:00:51.000 Pierre can unite both the red Tories and the blue Tories.
00:00:55.000 We ultimately need to defeat Justin Trudeau whenever the next election is.
00:01:00.000 What do you make of the attacks that some people have been making about Pierre's campaign
00:01:04.000 saying that he's attracting only one type of Canadian person
00:01:07.000 and that he's using dog whistle politics?
00:01:09.000 What do you have to say to that?
00:01:10.000 I mean, a noted white person here obviously supports Pierre Polyev.
00:01:15.000 But I think it's nonsense.
00:01:17.000 You know, prominent Sikh conservative MPs, Tim Upple and Josh Rajnalan support him.
00:01:23.000 LGBTQ MPs like Eric Duncan and Melissa Lansman endorsed Pierre Polyev.
00:01:28.000 So to equate that his movement is just a bunch of white supremacists is just complete nonsense.
00:01:35.000 And it's only going to hurt divide the party.
00:01:38.000 We need to come together and defeat Justin Trudeau whenever the next election is.
00:01:42.000 What excites you about Pierre's campaign?
00:01:44.000 Pierre's campaign, I think he's one of the guys that he's willing to do this job for all Canadians.
00:01:50.000 He's truthful, he puts his goals and he's ambitious for his cause.
00:01:56.000 What brings you out here?
00:01:57.000 What is it about Pierre's campaign that excites you?
00:01:59.000 I'm a big fan of the member from Carleton.
00:02:02.000 I've been following him a long time.
00:02:03.000 I think he has a good following and definitely things like social media have played to his strengths.
00:02:09.000 He's very charismatic, very knowledgeable.
00:02:11.000 He debates well.
00:02:13.000 He's got a great stance on a lot of the issues.
00:02:16.000 I'm sure he'll suss more out as time goes on, but he's definitely a clear front runner.
00:02:22.000 What's the one policy that he's been talking about that you resonate most with as a supporter?
00:02:28.000 I think his strength is the economy.
00:02:30.000 I think for me he's a candidate who gets economics.
00:02:34.000 I believe that's his background.
00:02:36.000 And he's got the right idea and he's very much a numbers guy.
00:02:40.000 What resonates with me is a lot more on the side of freedom and getting back to the Canada
00:02:46.000 that you and I know, free Trudeau.
00:02:49.000 Some very senior members of the Conservative Party have endorsed Pierre Polya's campaign,
00:02:53.000 including two former cabinet ministers, John Baird and Tony Clement.
00:02:57.000 I talked to them about what it is about Pierre's campaign that excites them
00:03:00.000 and why they've come out to the event to put their weight behind Pierre.
00:03:04.000 What is it about Pierre's campaign that's exciting you and makes you want to get involved?
00:03:08.000 Well, I think two things. First of all, he has a vision for the country, make it the freest country in the world.
00:03:13.000 Secondly, and this is probably the first leadership candidate since Stephen Harper,
00:03:19.000 he actually knows how to pull the levers in Ottawa to actually get the vision done. Very important.
00:03:25.000 If you're going to be a leader, a tenor, you not only have to have what do we want to do,
00:03:31.000 but how are we going to get it done. And I think Pierre has both of those qualities.
00:03:35.000 I think Pierre has the capacity to energize and galvanize Canadian Conservatives,
00:03:40.000 young people, old people, East and West, French and English.
00:03:43.000 The enthusiasm required here today just says all you need to know about the movement that he's leading.
00:03:49.000 He's not a follower, he's a leader, and he's going to bring great things to this country.
00:03:54.000 As someone involved in the campaign, what do you make of the attacks that we've seen against Pierre,
00:03:59.000 saying that his events are attracting a specific type of person and that he's using dog whistle politics?
00:04:05.000 You hear that from some of the opponents. What do you think?
00:04:07.000 You could see a candidate today that was picking up pro-immigration, pro-diversity.
00:04:12.000 You look at the crowd, it's black and white and brown, gay and straight, male and female.
00:04:17.000 There's just so much enthusiasm around his freedom movement.
00:04:22.000 True North is going to continue to bring you on the ground coverage of the Conservative Party leadership race
00:04:26.000 as candidates go across the country, talking to members, trying to get members to sign up
00:04:31.000 and eventually trying to get them to vote for them in the Conservative leadership election.
00:04:35.000 In downtown Toronto, for True North, Harrison Faulkner.
