00:00:07.520 A couple of weeks ago, I had the good privilege of being a guest on Maxime Bernier's show,
00:00:13.100 the Max Bernier Show, and it was great.
00:00:15.520 We had a wide-ranging chat.
00:00:16.940 We talked about my time in politics and media, independent media, COVID lockdowns.
00:00:21.900 We spoke for, I think it was 40, 45 minutes or so.
00:00:24.540 And I'm not a PPC supporter in the sense that I'm not a supporter of any particular party,
00:00:30.220 but I enjoyed the conversation and would happily go back.
00:00:33.660 But it was interesting.
00:00:34.580 There was one section of that interview with Maxime Bernier that has had me getting deluged
00:00:41.200 by a lot of very nasty email, and it was a section in which I talked about vaccine passports.
00:00:47.740 Here's what I said.
00:00:48.720 I think that a vaccine passport is inevitable, and I'm kind of of two minds on this,
00:00:53.820 because on one hand, I respect national sovereignty, and I respect that countries
00:00:58.180 need to be able to make decisions that are right for them.
00:01:01.120 So even if Canada doesn't have a vaccine passport, countries that Canadians might want to travel
00:01:06.660 to, like France or Germany or Israel, may expect one.
00:01:10.320 So if a Canadian wants to travel, they have to play by other countries' rules.
00:01:14.140 Now, one of the problems is I generally tend to be an easygoing person, and some people
00:01:18.200 are uncomfortable with the fact that I'm not angry all the time, to which I say it's very
00:01:22.240 difficult to sustain being angry all the time.
00:01:24.880 But I gave what I believe is a matter-of-fact assessment that vaccine passports are inevitable,
00:01:31.620 and a lot of people didn't like that.
00:01:34.060 And I realized that I haven't actually talked about this in a little while, and I wanted
00:01:37.680 to delve into it in a way that people understand my position, that I think vaccine passports
00:01:42.760 are terrible, but also that they are unavoidable.
00:01:46.000 And the reason I say this is twofold.
00:01:49.060 Number one, I am committed to my libertarian principles, and I don't believe that anyone
00:01:53.580 has a right to go into another country.
00:01:55.640 As much as I became accustomed to, in the before times, being able to just head on over to the
00:02:00.340 United States if I wanted, or pick up on a plane and go to a country anywhere in the
00:02:04.380 world if I so desired, no other country has a right to admit non-citizens into its borders.
00:02:10.540 Which means that if any country that is a tourist destination decides it wants to put up barriers
00:02:16.220 and say, in order to enter, you must prove that you are vaccinated, I believe they have
00:02:21.320 a right as a sovereign nation to do that.
00:02:25.180 Now, if Canada were to do it, I would oppose it because I'm a Canadian.
00:02:28.500 I have a say in how the Canadian government does things, or that's how it's supposed to
00:02:32.440 be in a democratic society, but that's a topic for another day.
00:02:36.420 And the issue with businesses is very similar.
00:02:38.760 I believe that businesses have a right to determine whatever rules and guidelines they
00:02:43.740 want for admittance.
00:02:45.860 So if Live Nation, which is one of the biggest concert companies, decides that they're going
00:02:49.880 to say, in order to come to one of our concerts, you need to be vaccinated, you need to prove
00:02:53.440 it, and you need to show a vaccine passport, I would oppose that, but respect their right
00:02:59.420 as an independent private company to do it.
00:03:02.920 And that's the challenge with liberty, is that if you believe people have a right to make
00:03:07.520 these decisions for themselves, you unfortunately will inevitably lead to situations where these
00:03:13.020 things have very wide-reaching implications.
00:03:15.980 And this is where we are now.
00:03:17.860 If the Canadian government mandates a vaccine passport, that would be incredibly wrong.
00:03:23.220 It would be a violation of people's right to not be vaccinated.
00:03:27.140 Like I've said in the past, I support vaccinations, but I also support people's right to say a vaccine
00:03:32.520 is not for them.
00:03:33.280 And that's an especially important freedom as we see stories of concern about the AstraZeneca
00:03:37.980 and Johnson & Johnson vaccines in particular.
00:03:41.240 Just this morning, U.S. health authorities recommended a pause in the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
00:03:46.040 over a small number, but still a number of cases involving blood clots.
00:03:50.940 But all of that is beside the point.
00:03:53.200 You as an individual have a right to decide what you want to put in your body.
00:03:57.700 Similarly, other businesses have a right to decide what rules they want to put out.
00:04:02.180 And other individuals have a right to decide what comfort level they have about people in
00:04:07.640 their orbit.
00:04:08.920 And this is the inevitable problem we are going to see with vaccine passports, is that we may
00:04:14.180 reach them by default without them being adopted by a state.
00:04:19.220 Without them being adopted by the Canadian government necessarily.
00:04:23.660 Because if the Canadian government were to start mandating this, or even airlines which
00:04:29.280 are federally regulated, I'd say there is an argument that Air Canada and WestJet are not
00:04:34.680 private companies, especially Air Canada now that they've gotten a multi-billion dollar
00:04:38.680 aid package from the government.
00:04:40.680 But this is not me endorsing vaccine passports.
00:04:43.800 This is me taking a very realistic view of how the world is headed and where the world
00:04:48.780 is headed.
00:04:49.560 One story that came across my radar regarding the TIAC, which is the Tourism Industry Association
00:04:55.120 of Canada, is that they're calling for a vaccine passports because they see it as being the
00:04:59.580 only way that you could have travel reopen.
00:05:03.780 This industry, which is again made up of Air Canada, Via Rail, a bunch of government funded
00:05:09.480 tourism boards, they are saying that listen, the 14 day quarantine is killing tourism, travel
00:05:15.160 restrictions are killing tourism.
00:05:16.980 They think a vaccine passport is the only way to get out of that.
00:05:20.660 And that's the problem here, is that a lot of people right now think that that is the
00:05:25.020 only way out of it.
00:05:26.280 And if they don't see another solution, that's going to be a position they're going to adopt.
00:05:31.600 And I think the response to that is very easy.
00:05:34.420 Government has to get off of this quarantine mindset, which simply isn't working.
00:05:39.340 And I'll give you an example of why.
00:05:41.080 If you want to drive into Canada right now, you're a Canadian citizen, you're allowed to
00:05:45.200 be in Canada, you have to get a test three days before you cross the border.
00:05:48.960 And then on the day you arrive, you have to get another test.
00:05:52.380 And if it's negative, doesn't matter, you're still in quarantine.
00:05:55.320 And then on your 10th day of quarantine, you have to get another test.
00:05:59.140 And if it's negative, you get to leave your quarantine on the 14th day when you would
00:06:04.320 have left it anyway.
00:06:05.940 So you need to do three tests, even though the outcome is the same, which is you being
00:06:11.040 stuck in quarantine for 14 days.
00:06:12.800 So the idea of just going away for a weekend is simply not possible for most people unless
00:06:19.180 they want to deal with the two weeks of house arrest that comes after it.
00:06:23.600 And we've already talked on the show on numerous occasions about what happens when you fly into
00:06:27.840 the country.
00:06:28.320 You have to spend up to $2,000 to hang out in hotel quarantine for three days.
00:06:32.720 And at the end of which you get a negative test, you still have to spend your 14 day quarantine
00:06:37.400 at home.
00:06:37.940 What government is trying to do is basically prohibit travel without coming out and saying
00:06:43.860 that you are not allowed to leave the country, which government can't do.
00:06:47.180 They can not deny you entry into your country, but they can make it miserable, which is what
00:06:52.140 they're trying to do.
00:06:52.920 And it's causing a slow, painful death to the travel and tourism sector in Canada.
00:06:58.180 So much so that people are grabbing onto a vaccine passport because they think it's the
00:07:02.200 only available concession.
00:07:04.000 So while I think these things are inevitable in some form, I'm also very aware that government
00:07:10.940 is trying to make it so that the vaccine is the be all and end all, but they're not even
00:07:15.740 doing a particularly good job at that.
00:07:18.440 The government isn't saying that being vaccinated gets you out of quarantine.
00:07:22.280 And the reason the government's not saying that is because they failed at getting vaccinations
00:07:26.980 to Canadians.
00:07:28.180 They failed at getting people who want to be vaccinated, vaccinated.
00:07:31.480 And that failure is going to continue and persist for months and months and months, which is
00:07:36.580 why Canada is, as a developed nation, still shamefully doing this four-month interval between
00:07:41.920 first dose and second dose, despite the fact that that's not what the vaccine manufacturers
00:07:46.500 have tested for.
00:07:47.760 And it's not what they are prescribing for these things.
00:07:51.620 So again, I'm never going to force anyone to get a vaccine.
00:07:54.320 Get one, don't get one.
00:07:55.320 That is entirely your choice.
00:07:56.920 But the thing is, not everyone has to accept that choice.
