00:00:00.240 With how much the discussion about refugees and asylum seekers in Canada has been dominated by
00:00:06.040 the illegal border crossers coming in from the United States and Justin Trudeau's mishandling
00:00:11.500 of that crisis, we need to realize there are very legitimate circumstances why someone needs to
00:00:17.300 flee their country and quite frankly why Canada should be the place to which they can flee. 0.97
00:00:23.080 One very notable example of that is the case of Asia Bibi, a Pakistani woman who has served
00:00:29.820 almost nine years in prison and was once sentenced to death after the Christian woman was charged
00:00:37.320 and convicted with blasphemy.
00:00:38.960 Now that conviction was overturned but proving why it was such a problem in the first place,
00:00:44.680 the very rampant backlash to the Supreme Court of Pakistan's overturning of her conviction
00:00:50.400 led to riots in the streets, thousands of people stepping up to condemn the court and even calling
00:00:57.580 for the judges to be killed, calling for jihad to be waged against the judges who dared let a woman 0.99
00:01:04.260 go free on grounds of free speech. 0.95
00:01:07.460 Asia Bibi, it's unclear where she is.
00:01:10.180 Some reports say she's still in Pakistan, others that she's left.
00:01:13.440 Her husband has put an appeal out for safe haven around the world including to Canada
00:01:17.720 and even her lawyer has had to uproot his life and bring his family to the Netherlands
00:01:22.360 so that he can be free from the Islamic radicals that exist in Pakistan. 1.00
00:01:27.200 Well, a little bit of good news on the horizon perhaps.
00:01:30.040 Justin Trudeau said that he is in talks with the Pakistani government about whether she could
00:01:35.620 come here.
00:01:36.180 Justin Trudeau gave an adaptation of his famous line that Canada is a welcoming place.
00:01:42.280 Now, I don't know the details of what negotiation, if any, has been going on but I do hope sincerely
00:01:48.100 that these discussions are serious and that they actually lead to a resolution.
00:01:53.700 That's assuming that Asia Bibi wants to come to Canada but I do think Canada needs to step up
00:01:58.520 especially when someone's right to free speech and someone's religious freedom is being threatened abroad.
00:02:03.940 We're talking about a woman who literally spent nearly a decade behind bars and at one point would be executed 0.99
00:02:09.520 because she lives in a country that does not respect religious pluralism, free speech or religious freedom.
00:02:15.360 If Canada wants to be taken seriously as a free nation and a freedom-loving nation
00:02:20.740 especially a nation that is a safe haven for others
00:02:23.620 we need to step up and take serious these cases that actually are egregious violations of one's rights.
00:02:29.980 If we have room for tens of thousands of illegal border crossers coming into Canada
00:02:34.400 from the safe United States
00:02:36.260 we certainly have room for Asia Bibi coming from the unsafe Pakistan. 1.00
