Hello, Canada. It's Wednesday, November 12th, and this is the True North Daily Brief.
00:00:35.220
We've got you covered with all the news you need to know.
00:00:38.520
Let's discuss the top stories of the day and the True North exclusives you won't hear anywhere else.
00:00:46.660
At the United Nations COP30 climate summit in Brazil,
00:00:51.160
UK's net-zero minister and former Labour leader, Ed Miliband,
00:00:55.600
offered glowing praise for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, calling him a, quote,
00:01:04.320
True North journalist Wally Tam-Tam caught up with Miliband outside a COP30 event in Belém, Brazil.
00:01:11.620
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had delivered an address at the conference's prelude
00:01:19.380
When asked about Carney's leadership and climate policy record, Miliband replied,
00:01:25.160
I think Mark Carney's a great guy, he's a good friend of mine,
00:01:29.400
and I believe he's a really important climate leader.
00:01:32.920
Asked if he and Carney were still in contact and planning to collaborate on climate initiatives,
00:01:40.700
Just a question for Ottawa, what are your thoughts on Mark Carney's climate leadership?
00:01:44.700
I think Mark Carney's a great guy, he's a good friend of mine,
00:01:48.580
and I believe he's a really important climate leader.
00:01:51.060
Are you still in touch with him? Are you guys looking forward to getting closer in the future?
00:01:54.980
Tens of thousands of delegates, including a Canadian contingent,
00:02:02.180
and Canadian Identity Minister Stephen Guilbeau,
00:02:05.360
are attending the United Nations' latest climate conference in the Amazon.
00:02:10.580
Carney, who served as governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020,
00:02:16.340
has been a central figure in the global climate finance movement.
00:02:20.700
He has used his influence in banking and government to push for aggressive decarbonization targets
00:02:29.360
While Carney chose not to attend COP30 himself, his allies are well represented.
00:02:46.440
Yeah, so this morning, for now, it's a one-minister team.
00:02:49.700
It's Julia Dabrussin, who arrived this morning,
00:02:54.320
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get anything out of her yet.
00:02:57.160
As you will see later on, she's been deflecting questions,
00:03:00.420
and her staff have been doing everything possible to keep her away from me.
00:03:03.780
The sole Canadian journalist going after her for information that Canadian people want to know.
00:03:09.140
Like, what are the costs that we are incurring?
00:03:12.860
What is the dollar figure amount that we are committing to these different UN and globalist initiatives on the environment?
00:03:20.380
I heard that Stephen Goebo is set to arrive today, actually.
00:03:26.600
So, I was told on Monday that he'll be arriving at midnight,
00:03:32.180
So, we'll see if we can catch up with him before I depart.
00:03:34.820
I watched Dabrussin's brief remarks, but three minutes' worth of remarks on Remembrance Day,
00:03:43.120
discussing the importance of remembrance and preserving a two-minute moment of silence.
00:03:48.760
And, of course, her team was all present there,
00:03:51.500
and that was basically the only event she had at the pavilion that was publicly available.
00:03:55.920
Everything else was her interacting behind closed doors with other delegates from other countries
00:04:00.000
and other bilateral meetings she had all evening long.
00:04:03.480
But that was the first day we had any Canadian minister whatsoever,
00:04:06.920
the first day where Canada was represented by someone else besides the ambassador to Brazil.
00:04:12.480
And, of course, I guess that team will only get bigger as the days at COP30 go on.
00:04:20.400
Simon Fraser University fully embraced race-based hiring
00:04:23.960
with an advertisement for faculty position exclusively restricted to black applicants.
00:04:28.860
A tenor-track posting in Philosophy says the competition is limited to applicants who, quote,
00:04:37.900
Applicants must first complete an applicant demographic survey.
00:04:43.180
Another posting in the School of Criminology applies the same race restriction,
00:04:47.520
warning that candidates who do not complete the survey, quote,
00:04:52.260
The posting states that the demographic survey responses will be used to determine their appropriateness
00:04:57.120
for the position alongside their experience and qualifications.
00:05:01.580
Simon Fraser University says race-restricted hiring is part of a special program supported
00:05:09.600
The university received approval from the commissioner to limit recruitment.
00:05:14.100
Simon Fraser University plans to hire at least, quote,
00:05:16.860
15 black tenor-track faculty and 15 black staff by 2028 to address what it calls systemic discrimination.
00:05:27.580
The demographic survey asks applicants to report indigenous identity, racial identity, gender identity,
00:05:36.540
The postings say these questions help the university meet Canada research chair's targets
00:05:43.680
to enhance equity and remove systemic barriers to recruitment.
00:05:51.560
Is there something in Canada's constitution that makes racial discrimination permissible in this case?
00:05:58.000
Well, look, Walid, under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
00:06:01.580
discrimination on the basis of race is prohibited.
00:06:06.760
But there are exceptions, believe it or not, and this has been kind of adjudicated in the quasi-court system
00:06:15.100
of human rights tribunals, at least in Ontario.
00:06:19.140
There are appeals to subsections that essentially say that within Canadian law,
00:06:25.660
you're allowed to have special programs designed, or so-called, rather, designed to help disadvantaged groups.
00:06:36.500
So basically, if an institution argues that a policy is meant to fix historical inequality,
00:06:44.400
it can get a green light to treat people differently based on things like race, gender, or identity.
00:06:51.300
And that seems to be what Simon Fraser University is doing here,
00:06:56.900
and plenty of other organizations, institutions, both public and not,
00:07:02.760
have used this to sort of segregate people based on identifiable race characteristics.
00:07:09.480
The Brazilian government is under fire as the host of COP30 for using three diesel-guzzling cruise ships
00:07:19.720
to house climate conference attendees, sparking outrage over the summit's real carbon footprint.
00:07:26.780
In order to accommodate thousands of foreign delegations and politicians,
00:07:31.260
the Brazilian government docked three gas-guzzling ships at the docks of the host city,
00:07:36.300
one reserved for President Lula, while the other two were reserved for commercial use.
00:07:41.740
According to a report by Brazilian media outlet Revista Oeste,
00:07:46.720
Lula's own vessel consumes approximately 135 liters of diesel fuel per hour.
00:07:53.580
The boat remains docked in Baleim, where the summit is taking place and are being used as a floating hotel
00:08:01.220
due to a shortage of upscale accommodations in the city.
00:08:04.700
The magazine reports that the cost of renting the boat is being covered by taxpayers under federal government expenses,
00:08:11.600
though officials have not been transparent about the full cost.
00:08:15.760
The vessel features private suites, dining facilities, and conference rooms for meetings during the international climate event.
00:08:23.580
Waleed, while you're there, what are some of the other points of contention or controversy
00:08:28.200
that you're hearing about the Brazilian governments, particularly around climate hypocrisy during the COP30 event?
00:08:36.260
Well, Cosman, for climate hypocrisy, there is no shortage whatsoever.
00:08:40.400
First of all, we covered the story earlier on before COP went off officially,
00:08:45.260
which was the story about the thousands of trees cut down from the very same Amazon rainforest
00:08:51.580
that the government of Brazil is poised to protect using our tax dollars from high-income countries.
00:08:58.640
They cut down thousands of those trees of that protected rainforest in order to build a highway
00:09:04.300
which would essentially be serving delegates and visitors going up into the city of Balei
00:09:10.880
from the rainforest, from the Amazon, and from the bordering states.
00:09:14.380
That's, I think, a four-lane highway that they were looking to build based off that cleared-off space.
00:09:21.780
We also know about these three cruise ships that are all diesel-powered
00:09:26.040
and are burning hundreds of liters per every couple hours, of course.
00:09:31.100
And these are, of course, high-end facilities being used for these foreign delegates of, you know,
00:09:36.080
very elitist stature from the business aspect to the political angle.
00:09:39.840
We had Macron from France, Keir Starmer from the UK.
00:09:44.080
I spoke earlier today with, or earlier the other day, sorry, with Gavin Newsom.
00:09:49.460
And there are many other delegates that are benefiting from those gas-guzzling machines on water.
00:09:56.160
We also know about the fake tree story as well.
00:09:58.440
So while the government of Brazil has authorized the cutting down of trees from the Amazon rainforest,
00:10:03.500
they have spent almost $5 million Canadian dollars of Brazilian tax dollars, that is,
00:10:08.720
on building these artificial trees to plant around Berlin to kind of show off the whole nature,
00:10:19.580
To go beyond and further, for most of day one, most of the venue did not even have properly functioning air conditioning.
00:10:28.340
For most of the last couple of days, even including today,
00:10:32.040
many of the bathrooms are not functional because they're not receiving water to both the sinks and toilets.
00:10:36.920
And of course, there are many other small complaints, like the cafeteria is not having enough food for the guests,
00:10:43.100
the food itself being extremely expensive at the venue.
00:10:46.660
And of course, this venue is right in the middle of the city,
00:10:48.860
so it's not some remote location where you would have to ship everything on trucks.
00:10:55.720
But of course, Lula's and his government's decision to host the conference at Belém
00:11:01.420
is almost entirely a political decision of bringing attention to an area where he is usually more popular
00:11:12.700
And of course, I will keep our viewers up to date with any further examples of high-carbon hypocrisy
00:11:20.180
or frankly, the global delegations that are attending this event for all the wrong reasons.
