Last week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor John Tory were united in calling out the federal government for its inaction
00:00:07.280
and its ability to allow this border crossing crisis to actually become a crisis.
00:00:13.580
Doug Ford and John Tory went to the government and said,
00:00:15.980
Look, we need help. We're not going to pay for it. This is your mess. You have to fix it.
00:00:21.420
Well, the Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hassan, actually responded.
00:00:24.720
He responded to the call from these two heads of government in Ontario and Toronto.
00:00:30.500
And what did he say? He didn't like Doug Ford's tone.
00:00:35.940
Yeah, have a listen to Ahmed Hassan's comments here.
00:00:39.440
And I'm very concerned by Premier Ford and Minister McLeod really making statements that are difficult
00:00:53.960
to understand when it comes to how they are describing asylum seekers.
00:00:59.440
These are people who we have a legal obligation to give a fair hearing to.
00:01:04.880
And so we are applying Canadian law, we are applying international law,
00:01:09.260
and that requires all levels of government to work together.
00:01:14.680
We have a wait time for an asylum hearing at 11 years
00:01:18.680
because agents and the system itself is tapped out.
00:01:21.920
You have hundreds of asylum seekers in Toronto that are going to get kicked out of their dorm rooms
00:01:26.880
because, well, they need the dorm rooms for actual students.
00:01:29.780
You've got millions of dollars, tens of millions of dollars,
00:01:33.000
owed to jurisdictions like Toronto to deal with this.
00:01:39.560
You've got all of the challenges that we are facing as far as security is concerned,
00:01:46.780
the strength and integrity of the system, and, yes, the cost.
00:01:52.880
is concerned about the tone that Doug Ford uses in criticizing the government
00:01:58.120
for allowing the aforementioned crisis to take hold.
00:02:02.240
What is it about what Doug Ford said when he looked at the government and said,
00:02:06.320
you've got to rein in this illegal border crossing problem?
00:02:12.760
Because even Justin Trudeau in the House of Commons
00:02:15.560
referred to border crossing illegally as illegally.
00:02:20.520
Crossing a border between official border crossings is illegal.
00:02:27.460
But the fact of the matter is he doesn't like that he is under the microscope.
00:02:32.340
He doesn't like, like none of the representatives of the federal government, by the way,
00:02:44.320
That is the reason that the problem has gotten as bad as it has.
00:02:52.280
when your policies are rightfully being called into question right now.
00:02:59.780
I mean, the government likes to call it irregular, irregular border crossing.
00:03:05.440
it makes me feel a little bit irregular, quite frankly.
00:03:08.040
But when they're focused on the language and not the crisis,
00:03:12.080
they have proven to Canadians that they don't care about our borders.
00:03:16.900
And it's time that they actually get held to account for that.
00:03:19.940
For the True North Initiative, I'm Andrew Lutton.
