00:00:27.400 politics this week mainly I'm not even gonna you know tee up a bunch of other

00:00:32.220 stuff because the big story is the resignation from cabinet of Jody Wilson

00:00:37.180 Raybould Jody Wilson Raybould is the veterans or was until this morning the

00:00:41.980 Veterans Affairs Minister but most notably she was the Attorney General who

00:00:47.560 claims that the PMO tried to pressure her to intervene in the prosecution of SNC

00:00:53.020 Lavalin a liberal connected and quite frankly corruption ridden firm in

00:00:58.960 Montreal and what is so fascinating about this I want to walk you through the

00:01:04.120 timeline here because the story that started this all the Globe and Mail report

00:01:09.100 citing unnamed sources started last week on I think Thursday morning Thursday

00:01:15.640 morning Globe and Mail comes out with the story saying that the PMO tried to

00:01:20.560 pressure Jody Wilson Raybould Trudeau denies this says that they're false and

00:01:25.480 that he never directed and this is the key word that Justin Trudeau nor anyone in

00:01:30.640 his office direct no he says they didn't so Jody Wilson Raybould has been very

00:01:37.800 tight-lipped on this whole thing she has claimed solicitor client privilege says that

00:01:42.580 she can't comment on it because that would be violating the sacred relationship

00:01:47.560 that a lawyer has with their client and the secrecy that is supposed to be at the

00:01:51.760 center there her client is the government of Canada or was when she was

00:01:56.000 the Attorney General the government of Canada and we often view the Minister of

00:02:00.940 Justice in the role as a cabinet minister that oversees the Justice Department

00:02:05.440 which is valid but in the cases like these the Attorney General has a very

00:02:10.040 specific role it is the government's chief lawyer and when push comes to shove her job 1.00

00:02:15.360 is to go to bat for the government and the point that I made in a video I produced

00:02:20.460 on this yesterday I think was that when you are the Attorney General for the

00:02:26.340 government that means that you are representing the people you can't

00:02:30.060 represent the government without actually representing the people that that

00:02:33.940 government is supposed to represent and I know that sounds like a convoluted

00:02:37.140 sentence but the point I'm trying to make there is that her accountability

00:02:40.360 should not lie or end with the Prime Minister but her accountability should

00:02:44.460 extend and to an end with the people of Canada and to be clear this is not an

00:02:50.580 indictment of Jodi Wilson-Raybould because at this point it sounds like she

00:02:54.220 actually is the only one that has a level of moral clarity about what's going on

00:02:58.980 here this is the first indigenous woman to ever be the Attorney General of Canada

00:03:03.780 the highest ranking position that an Aboriginal person has ever had in the

00:03:08.300 Canadian government and as of this morning she has resigned she is gone from the

00:03:14.280 cabinet although she is still remaining as a Liberal member of Parliament there

00:03:18.900 was a report from one writer with APTN who said that Jodi Wilson-Raybould was

00:03:25.060 going to citizen independent that wasn't true it was a kind of a

00:03:28.220 miscommunication Jodi Wilson-Raybould still an MP still a Liberal MP but not a

00:03:33.780 cabinet member and what's so important about this is that excuse me there's

00:03:39.540 something that is paramount in government called cabinet secrecy or cabinet

00:03:43.500 confidence which means anything that's discussed in the course of being in a

00:03:47.280 cabinet meeting is protected you cannot share it not even with your own staff

00:03:51.740 unless they're given the same classification so now that she is no longer in

00:03:57.780 cabinet even if she is a Liberal she's got a lot more flexibility and a lot more 1.00

00:04:08.760 look at Jodi Wilson-Raybould's resignation letter we see exactly where

00:04:23.120 following with a heavy heart I am writing to tender my resignation as Minister of

00:04:28.320 Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defense I want to thank all

00:04:32.820 Canadians and in particular the residents of Vancouver Granville who put their

00:04:39.120 trust in me and supported me as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada

00:04:43.020 and as the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defense

00:04:47.120 when I sought federal elected office it was with the goal of implementing a

00:04:52.500 positive and progressive vision of change on behalf of all Canadians and a

00:04:57.540 different way of doing politics my resignation as a Minister of the Crown in

00:05:01.860 no way changes my commitment to seeing that fundamental change achieved the work

00:05:06.600 must and will carry on to Canadian veterans and their families I have the

00:06:13.020 number one she does not in this letter at all ever thank Justin Trudeau she doesn't thank her

00:06:20.060 colleagues in cabinet she says that she's grateful to Canadians to her constituents

00:06:25.100 to her staff no thank you for giving her the opportunity to serve so as Robin Urbach

00:06:30.380 from CBC said in a tweet this is very much a cold breakup if ever there was one but

00:06:35.780 then we compound this with Justin Trudeau's offices statement and they issued the

00:06:41.600 following last night the Prime Minister spoke with Jody Wilson-Raybould who

00:06:45.680 informed him she was tendering her resignation from Cabot the cabinet the

00:06:50.020 Prime Minister convened a cabinet meeting this morning to inform his

00:06:53.420 cabinet colleagues of Ms. Wilson-Raybould's resignation the Prime Minister also

00:06:59.000 spoke with Minister Sajan who immediately assumes responsibilities acting as

00:07:03.840 Acting Minister of Veterans Affairs the Prime Minister will be in Winnipeg later

00:07:07.520 today and will hold a press conference at which he will answer questions from the media

00:07:11.600 so when we put those two together we have a statement from Jody Wilson-Raybould in

00:07:17.480 which she does not even acknowledge that Trudeau was the one that put her there

00:07:21.860 and then we have a statement from Trudeau which doesn't acknowledge in any way any

00:07:26.540 sense of gratitude to the service that Jody Wilson-Raybould has already

00:07:30.600 contributed to her country so this proves that we're not just talking about some

00:07:35.600 combination of letters here that tells us that this is all part of a plan this is

00:07:42.140 very much an acrimonious split and I think that Trudeau was honestly

00:07:47.600 blindsided by this I genuinely believe that he thought she was going to play ball

00:07:52.540 and stay quiet and I'll tell you why I think that because just 24 hours ago which

00:07:59.160 is I realize a lifetime in politics but just 24 hours ago Trudeau was out answering

00:08:04.420 questions about this sort of and he had said that he welcomed an investigation

00:08:10.440 and we'll talk about the ethics commissioner the federal ethics

00:08:13.180 commissioner is investigating this but Trudeau said the following that she would

00:08:19.020 have resigned from cabinet if she had felt improperly pressured his exact quote in

00:08:24.240 our system of government of course her presence in cabinet should actually speak 1.00

00:08:29.460 for itself to just take that in her presence in cabinet should actually speak

00:08:38.220 for itself so Trudeau Trudeau surrogates Trudeau spokespeople and spin doctors try

00:08:44.340 to make the claim that oh well if she had that many that big of an issue with how 0.98

00:08:47.760 things are going in the Trudeau cabinet she wouldn't be there and then you fast

00:08:51.400 forward a day and she's gone from cabinet she's saying I'm out so they made a

00:08:56.340 calculation in using that line a calculation in using that line that I

00:09:02.940 think has now been a profound failure because she's not in cabinet and the

00:09:06.840 fact that she took such a personal sacrifice because her political career 0.64

00:09:11.640 in the Liberal Party of Canada under Justin Trudeau right now is done if the

00:09:15.720 Liberal Party changes if Trudeau flips out for someone else if they lose

00:09:19.260 different story but under this particular government she has no future now so by

00:09:25.200 resigning from cabinet and by doing it in this way she is genuinely putting her

00:09:32.640 career on the line now I want to make a couple of points here I do not believe

00:09:38.640 that she is standing up for the values that I want a politician to stand up for 0.85

00:09:44.440 ideologically she's not someone who stands up for the things that I care about

00:09:48.420 but I do believe from this whole chapter with everything we've heard that she is

00:09:52.300 behaving and acting with integrity and Trudeau I don't like the stuff he's doing

00:09:57.460 but I also resent even more that there is no integrity there is no integrity right

00:10:05.140 now in what Justin Trudeau is doing and everyone's saying oh she should cross the

00:10:10.200 floor across the floor across the floor I honestly find that to be a really dumb

00:10:15.280 idea for two reasons number one she's still a liberal she ran for the liberals 1.00

00:11:35.600 believe it give the cursory oh yes and my thanks to so-and-so for doing this and

00:11:40.580 this and this and the fact that there wasn't even like a casual thank you in

00:11:44.360 there speaks volumes let's see Rosemary writes the ethics commissioner there's a

00:11:51.260 joke well yeah and I'm gonna get to that in a few moments because in all

00:11:55.700 honesty the ethics commissioner has investigated Trudeau in the past and what

00:12:01.000 do we have to show for it I mean pay $500 apologize for taking a private

00:12:05.720 certification this if he's found guilty will be the fifth ethics violation and

00:12:09.800 that is very much significant Rhonda writes I can imagine that she has been

00:12:16.040 threatened I can imagine what she has been threatened with by Trudeau well

00:12:19.060 career ruin mint is is probably what the threat is Robin writes what's her next 0.87

00:12:24.280 move I'll answer that in a second Robin Judy writes lawyer to see what she can 1.00

00:12:29.040 legally divulge we've got so many comments here we'll try to keep up with

00:12:33.240 these as the show goes on so I want to answer that question that was posed by

00:12:38.460 Robin what's her next move and this dovetails on what Judy said about getting

00:12:44.300 the lawyer so this lawyer that she has secured for herself Cromwell is a Supreme

00:12:49.420 Court or retired Supreme Court justice so we're talking about someone here who is

00:12:54.660 kind of among the best in Canada and certainly the most reputable and she's

00:13:01.000 getting a lawyer to in her words decide and figure out what it is that she can 0.99

00:13:05.540 share publicly and what she can't and this suggests that we're very likely to

00:13:10.000 see something in the way of a tell-all very soon Robin so it's possible that

00:13:16.000 this will be some full-length interview with Rosie Barton it's possible she'll

00:13:20.320 write some extended op-ed I mean I think that she's going to do some full-length

00:13:24.340 sit-down interview it won't be with me I'll try it won't be with me she'll pick

00:13:32.260 alignment with what the Liberals are about she took a stand however for due

00:13:37.540 process in the rule of law and she found that the current incarnation of the

00:13:41.620 Liberal Party in the reports that we're seeing does not stand up for that rule

00:13:47.080 of law and that's the big issue here so I don't think that anyone saying will she

00:13:55.100 cross the Conservatives will she I don't think that's gonna happen I think she's

00:13:58.340 helping the Conservatives I think she's very much I mean the Conservatives are

00:14:02.600 very much going to be the ones driving her story but I do not believe for a

00:14:08.240 second that she is a conservative and you may remember when Leona Alislev the

00:14:14.620 former Liberal MP from I think Newmarket Aurora crossed to the Liberals in the

00:14:18.740 summer I had a very similar frustration which is okay that's fine that she's

00:14:22.660 frustrated with the Liberals the Conservatives shouldn't be welcoming her

00:14:25.880 with open arms unless they have a shared foundation of values and right now the

00:14:31.600 only shared foundation of values between the Liberals and or the Conservatives and

00:14:35.380 Jody Wilson-Raybould is a belief that Trudeau has royally screwed up and that may

00:14:41.040 not be enough to make her a conservative but it is enough to make her a key 0.98

00:14:45.280 pillar and I think what the Conservatives and for that matter the People's

00:14:48.940 Party and even the NDP should be doing right now which is calling on Trudeau to

00:14:53.860 answer questions you have to remember here Justin Trudeau was the captain of

00:14:59.680 transparency and accountability and openness when he was using those words

00:15:03.820 and pretty much every interview and every media statement back in 2013 2014

00:15:09.160 2015 and I have a video coming out tomorrow that's looking at that just a

00:15:13.840 bunch of tweets from him saying the Prime Minister needs to testify under oath sign the

00:15:18.680 petition the Prime Minister needs to testify under oath well let's flip that

00:15:21.800 around now Justin Trudeau should testify under oath and him saying that

00:15:26.300 transparency should be the default openness should be the default that we

00:15:30.580 should all as our starting point have government that is not keeping secrets

00:15:34.820 from the people and all of that has gone by the wayside now that Justin Trudeau is in

00:15:41.420 the Prime Minister seat and he has access to these mechanisms that allow him to

00:15:45.560 close off his government from public scrutiny he's employing that he's

00:15:50.360 employing that and we need to start getting some answers here and the problem

00:15:55.100 with the ethics commissioner is that the ethics commissioner does not have the

00:15:59.160 ability to turn this into a bit of a show trial and I'm not saying that I want to

00:16:03.140 show trial but I want there to be some public accountability as opposed to

00:16:07.520 Justin Trudeau sitting in a room answering some questions and then this getting

00:16:11.740 distilled into a very sanitized and very condensed report that everyone reads

00:16:16.600 that's what happened with the Bahamas vacation whereas if Justin Trudeau would

00:16:21.800 agree to go before the Justice Committee say there would be a public

00:16:25.600 questioning and yes it would be used for partisanship the conservatives would

00:16:29.560 play it up it would be not exactly like the Kavanaugh hearing in the US but

00:16:33.520 it would even there's a risk that it would turn into something just very

00:16:36.640 polarizing and partisan but at least it would be public-facing because we're

00:16:41.500 past the point where the solution can exist in the back rooms when the

00:16:46.820 problem existed in the back rooms the solution can't when the problem took

00:16:52.140 place in locked closed doors or when the problem took place behind locked

00:16:57.880 closed doors the solution has to be in plain view with sunlight beaming down on it

00:17:03.480 and that's what Justin Trudeau needs to do he needs to have a full transparent and

00:17:08.460 public accounting of everything that happened and for that he needs to let

00:19:13.100 paraphrasing but Attorney General sees no reason to probe alleged PMO

00:19:17.420 interference the Attorney General who's appointed by the Prime Minister sees no

00:19:21.440 reason to look into the Prime Minister so the government has done that whole thing

00:19:25.400 I don't know if you've seen that police mean that goes around but we've

00:19:28.320 investigated ourselves and we've determined that nothing happened you

00:19:32.180 can't investigate yourself you just can't but this is exactly where we're going to

00:19:38.900 see an impasse here you cannot square these two completely conflicting

00:19:42.820 narratives on one side that nothing happened that no one was directed to do

00:20:29.960 was supporting Jody Wilson-Raybould she tweeted this week about Jody Wilson-Raybould's

00:20:35.060 courage and bravery now as I understand she's not running again but therein lies

00:20:40.460 another one that the Liberals have trotted out as a token who seems to be siding

00:20:44.420 with Jody Wilson-Raybould look I'm not at all one for identity politics I don't

00:20:50.000 like it I don't care about it I don't think it helps but there is something to

00:20:54.320 the symbolism here the Trudeau who prides himself on being the feminist Prime

00:20:58.520 Minister the you know the pro-indigenous Prime Minister has now

00:21:02.400 thrown the female indigenous justice minister a former justice minister under 1.00

00:21:07.680 the bus and he has again a minority female a black female in Céline César

00:21:12.780 Chavannes who is taking aim at him indirectly as well so all of these these

00:21:19.680 little tokens that he has put out seem to be ultimately pawns that can be

00:21:25.900 sacrificed at the first sign of trouble and that's where we are now most people

00:21:32.560 in politics will stick to wherever the path to power is which means most people

00:21:37.660 will keep their mouths shut it's the fact of life Liberals Conservatives doesn't

00:21:41.440 matter most people will go along with it because they want a seat in the cabinet

00:21:44.660 they want to be running in the next election they want to be in good graces

00:21:48.020 of the Prime Minister who right now holds all the power but when that starts to

00:21:52.120 fracture that's when you see people drop like flies and I think we may be at the

00:21:59.140 starting point of that right now we may be at the starting point because Jody

00:22:03.640 Wilson-Raybould is not a Leona Alislev and with all due respect to Leona

00:22:07.000 Alislev most people had never heard of her before she crossed to the Conservatives 0.97

00:22:11.080 she's not even Céline César Chavannes she is a high-profile member of this

00:22:17.320 government one of the most visible members of this government up until this

00:22:21.100 morning and now she's gone and she's gone in a way that suggests she is angling to

00:22:26.380 make a power play very very soon Karen asks why has the RCMP not stepped in

00:22:33.700 well this is in Bartley asked a similar question why do you think they are not

00:22:37.480 involved well for starters and I talked about this with Leo Knight who's a true

00:22:41.000 north fellow and former RCMP officer the other day you have to take into

00:22:45.280 consideration a few different things here number one the RCMP does not move

00:22:49.060 swiftly on stuff like this they want to collect evidence so if the RCMP is

00:22:53.080 investigating that could take time and it could take days weeks months or hopefully

00:22:58.180 not years but theoretically a year so that's part of it number two we don't

00:23:02.620 know if there was any criminal wrongdoing or if it's just ethical issues so we

00:23:08.380 have a conflict event a conflict of interest and ethics commissioner in

00:23:11.740 Ottawa who's tasked with looking up ethical concerns it's possible that someone

00:23:16.060 has broken the ethics law but not broken criminal law and remember that Justin

00:23:21.460 Trudeau as Prime Minister is allowed to talk to his Attorney General about

00:23:26.020 ongoing cases the Attorney General is allowed to intervene in prosecution

00:23:30.440 there's a path that it has to be done through but this is all allowed where it

00:23:35.300 would be criminal is if this intervention happened because of something that was

00:23:39.840 untoward if this intervention happened through means that were criminal such as

00:23:45.520 bribery extortion corruption and we know that SNC Lavalin has wound up facing

00:23:51.760 criminal charges and convictions on corruption and bribery scandals so we know

00:23:56.240 that it wouldn't be out of character for the company we don't know if there was

00:23:59.880 anything linking that conduct to this particular government though and that's

00:24:05.200 the big challenge here that's ultimately where we're going to see the

00:24:10.100 question marks of the next chapter of this is whether the wrongdoing is just

00:24:15.060 political but remember I also don't think that the RCMP involvement at this

00:24:18.560 point matters as much because the story is public enough that people are able to

00:24:23.960 formulate an opinion on it based on the information that is available and the

00:24:29.120 public component of this may be enough because remember in politics it doesn't

00:24:33.680 need to be criminal wrongdoing that sinks you it can also be PR wrongdoing or just

00:24:39.660 political faux pas and right now we're seeing that I mean when there is a

00:24:44.260 fracture in the cabinet this close to an election that's the other part we are

00:24:49.260 eight months away from the election we are probably about four months from the

00:24:54.240 starting of campaign season because once MPs go on summer break which should be

00:24:58.680 around May even if it's not the rip period that's basically when the election

00:25:02.460 is going to start so we're looking at a period of you know maybe May June July

00:25:06.420 August September maybe even five months of campaigning which means we're three

00:25:11.760 months away from it so this is not going to be irrelevant and the conflict of

00:25:17.520 interest in ethics Commissioner will have a report done before then this will

00:25:22.780 take a little bit of time but it should be done before the election which means we
