Transcript

00:00:00.000 Oh how soon they forget. It's amazing how bad the memories actually are when it
00:00:04.800 comes to Canada's political class of reporters, but we're seeing evidence of
00:00:09.120 it right now. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper is on a book tour
00:00:12.960 promoting his book Right Here Right Now, a book that by all accounts is an
00:00:17.280 absolutely incredible testament to the populist trends that we're seeing
00:00:20.880 around the world. It's not a memoir, it's actually a pretty good piece of
00:00:24.960 political analysis. But Canadian reporters are upset that they're not
00:00:29.520 getting the exclusives. From CTV's Don Martin to CBC's Rosie Barton, a number of
00:00:35.040 Canadian reporters are complaining that Stephen Harper is spending more time
00:00:38.560 doing interviews on Fox and Newsmax and with American outlets than he is with
00:00:43.740 Canadian reporters. Now have these reporters forgotten the way they treated
00:00:48.720 Stephen Harper as Prime Minister in the 2015 election? These were same reporters
00:00:53.260 that called him racist, that campaigned against him, that tried to make sure he
00:00:57.600 could never actually put forward any of the ideas and policies in his own terms
00:01:02.400 because they would torque them and now they're upset that they're not getting an
00:01:06.420 early access to the former Prime Minister when he's putting a book forward that
00:01:10.780 actually has global interest, not just to Canadians. Now this shows a profound
00:01:15.300 arrogance and entitlement from Canadian political media. Now it's not to say we
00:01:20.000 should be surprised by this, but I do think it's appropriate to take a step back and
00:01:23.880 kind of chuckle and maybe even enjoy a little bit. What is that term, schadenfreude?
00:01:28.140 Enjoying the suffering of these people that are now wondering why they're left
00:01:32.880 out when they were the ones that ultimately were very pleased to have
00:01:37.200 contributed to Stephen Harper's electoral defeat. Now I haven't read the book yet.
00:01:40.980 I'd happily interview Stephen Harper as I did a couple of times when he was the
00:01:45.120 Prime Minister and then when he was running for re-election. But my goodness if I
00:01:48.660 was hell-bent on destroying his political career, you better believe I wouldn't
00:01:52.900 expect to get an exclusive. For the True North Initiative, I'm Andrew Lawton.
