00:00:00.000 Welcome to The Fighter. I am your host, Chris Sims. I am also the Alberta Director for the
00:00:10.540 Canadian Taxpayers Federation. We're talking about fuel taxes. On the chart behind me,
00:00:16.060 you can see what you are paying when you fill up your tank with gasoline in this country.
00:00:22.080 This is the Alberta chart. Other places have different forms of fuel taxes. For example,
00:00:26.660 if you're in Vancouver, you're getting screwed by a much higher second carbon tax thanks to the
00:00:31.940 provincial government and a crazy high transit tax. Other places like Montreal, Toronto,
00:00:37.360 you're going to have various levels. At the end of the day, you're paying too much tax.
00:00:42.920 The government is taking too much of your money and the government is wasting your money.
00:00:47.820 Here's the top line news though, and this is really interesting.
00:00:50.920 The Canadian Taxpayers Federation and Leger National Poll just did a big poll across the country and more than 60% of Canadians say Kearney must keep the federal fuel tax, the excise tax, at zero.
00:01:07.880 right now it is at zero okay all through this summer it's been at zero but unfortunately right
00:01:14.660 after labor day the carny government in ottawa is planning on hiking that thing back up by 10 cents
00:01:21.140 per liter that's going to cost you if you do the math okay 10 cents is not nothing you're filling
00:01:27.880 up an average size pickup truck that's 10 bucks extra that you're going to be paying boom just in
00:01:35.300 that tax right after Labor Day. Ten bucks is ten bucks. I can get a jug of milk and a loaf of bread
00:01:42.240 for that. And the reason why I'm bringing up the jug of milk, twofold. One, the late great former
00:01:49.120 Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher, always pointed out that as the daughter
00:01:55.200 of the shopkeeper, because she was raised working class, raised above the shop, she always got
00:02:00.020 annoyed when the ruling class, government class, lost touch with normal people, lost touch with
00:02:08.080 how much things cost. And so she insisted, even as prime minister, to always know what a jug of
00:02:15.460 milk costs. And she insisted her entire cabinet, mostly men, mostly from the ruling class, also
00:02:22.140 knew how much a jug of milk costs. I don't know if you're following this online, but in the United
00:02:28.040 States right now, I'm actually not paying much attention because it doesn't affect me directly
00:02:32.160 most of the time. They must have primaries coming up this fall or something because it is just
00:02:36.280 getting ridiculous online amongst the American commentariat. The reason I'm raising this though
00:02:41.080 is there's this big foo-fara over how much a burrito costs, right? Like fast food, snack food.
00:02:49.040 And there's this big fight right now between what I would call the government ruling class
00:02:54.220 saying, who cares? Who cares how much of the burrito costs? Kids these days, you're wasting
00:02:59.620 your money on avocado toast or skip the dishes. Kids these days, you know, you don't understand
00:03:05.040 how it is to work. Bootstraps, blah, blah. Politicians in the ruling class, no matter
00:03:10.780 which party they're a part of, take that attitude at their political peril. If you lose touch with
00:03:19.580 how much people are being forced to spend on stuff, how much regular life is costing the
00:03:26.460 average working person, my goodness, you will not be in power very long. Because things like
00:03:33.180 the price of gas, things like gas taxes, things like government-caused inflation, which has made
00:03:41.860 bloody well, everything's so bloody expensive. Those matter. They matter. And I'm speaking to
00:03:51.080 anyone who is part of that ruling sector now. I don't care if it's in the terrarium of Ottawa,
00:03:56.920 which directly affects us, or the government terrarium of Washington, D.C. You must pay
00:04:03.200 attention to those meat and potato issues. Things like the cost of groceries, things like the cost
00:04:11.360 of homes. And yes, my friends, things like the cost of gasoline. It's fascinating to see that
00:04:18.180 we put out this poll, national poll, major polling firm Leger, and when you remove the undecideds,
00:04:26.040 meaning of those who have an opinion, more than 70% of Canadians are telling Prime Minister Mark
00:04:35.180 Kearney, do not increase our price of gas. Do not increase the gasoline tax. More fascinating,
00:04:43.600 it is middle-aged women. Typically what you would say is a Kearney voter or a liberal voter,
00:04:51.820 middle-aged women are saying in the highest numbers, do not hike that gas tax coming up in
00:04:59.680 September. Why does this matter? Why is everything costing so much? How exactly is inflation affecting
00:05:07.540 us? Why should we all fight back to make sure we do not all have to endure a gas tax hike in
00:05:15.240 September? Let's find out. Joining me now is my good friend and federal director of the Canadian
00:05:21.560 Taxpayers Federation, Franco Teresano. Franco, you and I have been going back and forth on this
00:05:26.720 all week um i am so happy to see these poll numbers not just because polls matter for the
00:05:32.060 media or polls matter for the politicians it's that people aren't taking this crap lying down
00:05:37.320 anymore more than 60 percent of canadians saying yeah keep that gas tax low were you surprised when
00:05:43.680 we saw these numbers oh i mean this is huge opposition right so folks just to go back in
00:05:48.460 time right uh the carny government temporarily suspended the federal gas tax right so that's
00:05:53.980 $0.10 a liter of gas, $0.04 a liter of diesel.
00:05:57.300 Over an entire year, the federal gas tax alone, just one of these taxes, the federal gas tax alone,
00:06:03.940 will cost the family fueling up their minivan like, what, $350 plus if they fuel it up once a week.
00:06:11.600 So Carney temporarily cut the gas tax, and his plan is to crank it back up in September, right after Labor Day.
00:06:19.320 So we commissioned this poll from Leger, and it just shows widespread opposition against a federal gas tax hike in September, right? 63% of Canadians are against it. You look at every single demographic, most Canadians are against it, regardless of gender, age, the province they live in, right? So huge opposition.
00:06:38.520 But then if you remove the undecideds, like the people who click, I don't know, it's 71% of Canadians who oppose the government hiking the gas tax back up. So widespread opposition. You'll love to see it.
00:06:51.440 Yeah, look at this one. Thanks so much, Jake. Our producer is pulling this up right now and we can take a look at it. Once again, folks, this is actually a screenshot of the Leger poll report. Just go through this a little bit more, Franco, like break this down. You were talking about demographics. You were talking about removing the undecided. So basically, everyone who actually has an opinion on this, if they were asked, it's 71%.
00:07:13.100 yeah 71% and you look at those numbers like keep that right on the screen there hey and you can
00:07:18.680 see it doesn't matter what demographic look like Canadians are against it okay you know what I
00:07:24.960 what I found interesting simmer uh women are are more likely to be opposed to a gas tax tax hike
00:07:30.980 than men um you got people age 55 and over most likely to be against it and then the good folks
00:07:37.280 of Saskatchewan and Manitoba also most likely to be against uh the federal government hiking the
00:07:42.360 gas tax back up but you know it really doesn't matter which demographic people are in you know
00:07:48.020 whatever um people are against this and there's a couple reasons obviously right like people are
00:07:53.280 really struggling right now people are feeling the pain you know the last thing the last thing
00:07:58.620 canadians need is the federal government hiking taxes making their life more expensive especially
00:08:04.020 right after labor day right chris like i don't need to tell you it's it's right around the time
00:08:08.660 parents start driving their kids back to school. It's also right after summer, you know, where
00:08:13.800 people got bills to pay, whether they went on a road trip or, you know, some type of vacation,
00:08:19.140 they're getting back into the swing of things. And then what the government's going to come in
00:08:23.000 and hammer them with a gas tax hike. Chris, let me just say one more thing, because, you know,
00:08:27.300 I think we got to say it. Not only do gas taxes make it more expensive for you to fuel up.
00:08:32.960 Gas taxes make everything more expensive. That's truck to the store. That's right.
00:08:37.820 Okay. Because it applies on diesel. Okay. So it makes it more expensive for that big rig truck
00:08:42.300 driver to fuel up, which makes it more expensive for you to buy pretty much anything that was
00:08:46.660 delivered to the store via truck. Which is everything. Like everything, folks,
00:08:52.820 depending on where you are right now, like if you're sitting in your living room, like look
00:08:55.800 around you, you're in your kitchen, look around you. Everything around you was on a truck or five
00:09:01.540 over its lifespan before you went and purchased it at a store. Now imagine increasing the tax on
00:09:07.620 the lifeblood that makes all those trucks move around, which is diesel. It's crazy pants to talk
00:09:12.740 about doing something like that. I love the poll. Many reasons. A, it's nice to see normal working
00:09:18.820 people in a national poll actually speak up on something like this. Two, it's getting media
00:09:23.980 coverage, including mainstream media, which is good because politicians still watch that thing.
00:09:29.920 So the politicians who are in that little terrarium of Ottawa and little capital cities
00:09:34.560 provincially, like Toronto, right, Franco? They read these polls. They see this kind of news,
00:09:41.400 and I think it's affecting them. It's nice to see. I'm going to get into the more
00:09:46.560 general, you know, how things are unaffordable and, you know, ignore that at your peril.
00:09:51.540 But do you want to get into the fact that now we've seen Ontario Premier Doug Ford,
00:09:56.360 credit where it's due, Premier of the biggest province, actually saying, yeah, joining rank
00:10:02.020 and file with the poll answerers saying carney should do the right thing and keep this thing
00:10:06.540 suspended i was surprised but i'm happily surprised to see ford come out on this yeah look i mean
00:10:12.160 regardless of your opinion on any politician like this is this is a big deal it's added pressure
00:10:17.620 when the premier of the most populous province the premier of ontario doug ford writes a letter
00:10:23.040 publishes that letter essentially well not essentially calling on the prime minister to
00:10:27.960 back down from the plan to hike the federal gas tax right like this is this is a big deal and this
00:10:33.320 shows like how important the poll is because it's got a ton of mainstream media coverage i mean
00:10:37.640 after we released the poll uh the conservatives the federal conservatives they came out you know
00:10:42.520 calling on carney not to hike gas taxes and then now you got premier doug ford right the ontario
00:10:47.480 premier coming out and publishing that letter that you just saw being like do not hike the gas tax
00:10:53.640 back up in september no tax hike canadians can't afford it so there is mounting pressure and so
00:10:59.560 folks look politicians care more about polls in the air they breathe i don't need to tell you
00:11:04.960 that they don't want to lose their cushy political jobs so that they're feeling the heat there now
00:11:09.980 there's another thing we got to do to crank that heat up to keep the pressure on you know what
00:11:15.220 folks it's i couldn't think of a better time than to email your mp email the prime minister and be
00:11:21.620 like hey i do not support a gas tax hike in september no way you should be cranking that gas
00:11:27.100 tax back up so right now would be a great time to really increase the heat increase the pressure on
00:11:33.280 the prime minister and show hey it's not just this abstract poll it's people i'm you know one of
00:11:40.440 these average canadians who do not who do not support and can't afford a gas tax hike franco
00:11:47.060 So before we get into the whole, you know, how much is Carney spending?
00:11:50.480 Could he actually afford to, you know, keep his gas tax suspended, yada, yada?
00:11:54.080 I must say, when I was up at Calgary, we did the news conference on this.
00:11:57.620 It was gas tax honesty.
00:11:58.980 And I have a chart and everything that I was talking about.
00:12:01.920 I did notice, though, there was more intense interest from the media this time.
00:12:06.480 Like the Calgary Herald took a big picture of it.
00:12:09.080 It was a big, splashy thing.
00:12:10.720 They led with the poll.
00:12:12.220 That was part of the headline.
00:12:13.380 do you think that it's the poll that's getting through to people here like do you think that's
00:12:18.960 kind of ringing a bell in the minds of some of these politicians and the folks who live in these
00:12:23.360 capitals and make these decisions i do i do because like first so folks like i'm not a pollster
00:12:30.420 right but we do commission a lot of polling on these different taxpayer issues so i do uh read
00:12:35.520 through a lot of polls and and let me tell you when you get a poll back where it's like 63 percent of
00:12:40.960 canadians who oppose something right because remember there's also the a bunch of people who
00:12:45.840 said i don't know you remove those undecideds and it's 71 of canadians who oppose the gas tax hike
00:12:51.460 in september that is a staggering amount right to get 71 of canadians with an opinion to agree
00:12:58.640 on anything right like i'm not just canadians i mean anyone right that's that's a big number
00:13:03.620 that is shows massive opposition when when you look at polls and again we commission a lot of
00:13:08.780 these that's that's a very clear indication that canadians will not tolerate a gas tax hike in
00:13:14.000 september so i think those numbers right there is is number one number two it's relevant i mean
00:13:20.400 look the government is going to increase gas taxes in like a month literally next month in september
00:13:25.680 just after labor day so this is this is heating up but number three like i think like these even
00:13:31.220 you know these reporters journalists producers they're like yeah life is expensive yeah what do
00:13:36.560 you mean you're you're even considering hiking a tax on gasoline and everything else that's like
00:13:42.060 truck to the store right like what are you talking about like so you the journalists the producers i
00:13:46.560 mean they're people too right they they look around with their eyes and see the the big price
00:13:51.620 on the gas station side or just go to the grocery store right so like yeah i don't want to pay you
00:13:56.580 know like everything's expensive why would you be raising gas taxes so people have to pay more for
00:14:01.160 stuff like it's absolutely crazy like like the inflation problem here in canada has got to such
00:14:06.580 an extent that you see like the clear clear clear majority of people being outraged over a potential
00:14:13.700 tax increase yes people should be outraged by the way yes i wanted to pick up on that just a little
00:14:19.680 bit um because those of us you know who work in this space as we like to say podcasts that kind
00:14:26.040 of stuff. Um, I ha I am noticing there must be midterms or something happening in the United
00:14:30.740 States because I am noticing this interesting disconnect right now. Um, between those who are
00:14:36.480 part of the ruling class that are within the, I think they call it the belt line, whatever is the
00:14:40.380 Washington DC bubble. Um, and normal working people. And I don't know how it started, but on
00:14:46.140 X or Twitter, there's this big fight over the cost of burritos and like, who cares about the cost of
00:14:51.540 a burrito. And I was seeing, frankly, some out of touch, disconnected, snotty comments coming from
00:14:58.020 the ruling class who are in power right now in Washington, D.C. saying nobody cares about that.
00:15:03.200 Focus on what we care about. It's like, no, working people, normal working people who are
00:15:09.060 filling up their tanks with gasoline to get to work, noticing how much things are costing at
00:15:14.400 the grocery store, including the cost of burritos. They're angry. They're super mad. And I think
00:15:21.120 that's kind of in the same vein with this poll result and i'm so happy to see it because same
00:15:27.220 thing happens up here franco we'll see the chattering classes on their panels on the fancy
00:15:32.540 things enter in ottawa and they'll be like oh franco nobody cares about gas taxes anymore
00:15:38.000 let's talk about other stuff no we can talk about gas taxes because people care everyone cares about
00:15:44.460 it other than the people you know in this elite bubble connected close to government okay or
00:15:50.860 directly within government i mean also just like think about the bureaucrats too right like bonuses
00:15:56.080 to 90 of government executives every year politicians take pay raises every single year
00:16:00.540 like mps have taken a pay raise for 14 consecutive years in a row like right so they don't feel the
00:16:06.060 impacts like everyone else feels the impacts of their decision making right if you can call it
00:16:10.440 decision making no i mean look it's um it's just yeah it's it's so i don't even want to say tone
00:16:16.400 because that's like what cliche but it is i don't know like it is like and yeah we should be talking
00:16:22.040 about gas taxes something the government is does or can do that directly makes life more expensive
00:16:28.980 for average people for normal people is gas taxes and gas tax hikes that makes life more expensive
00:16:34.940 okay there's a whole bunch of these different types of taxes i mean let's be so for real okay
00:16:39.260 the fastest the simplest and the easiest way for governments to help make life more affordable
00:16:45.260 is just to stop taking so much money from us
00:16:47.980 in the first place, right?
00:16:49.520 And like the tax burden in Canada is so gross, right?
00:16:52.440 Where it's now more than 40%
00:16:54.000 of the average family's budget,
00:16:55.960 not the monopoly man,
00:16:57.700 40% of the average family's budget
00:16:59.880 goes to paying taxes.
00:17:01.660 So essentially take your paycheck,
00:17:04.180 rip it in half because one half is the tax man.
00:17:07.600 And what really just boils my blood is that,
00:17:10.060 okay, it's not the home someone lives in.
00:17:13.260 It's not the clothes people buy.
00:17:15.260 And it's not the food people eat that is the single biggest expense for the average Canadian family.
00:17:19.780 The single biggest expense is the taxes they pay to all levels of government.
00:17:24.440 Okay?
00:17:25.040 And, like, what are we getting for all this?
00:17:27.900 Roads full of potholes?
00:17:29.660 Long wait times?
00:17:31.320 Oh, and now a city in Canada is thinking about government grocery stores?
00:17:35.940 Yeah, we're going to have wait times for carrots?
00:17:37.840 Like, give me a break.
00:17:39.760 Wait times?
00:17:40.560 I laugh, but I shouldn't.
00:17:42.700 We would have wait times.
00:17:43.480 guard you haven't heard you haven't heard me say that before no sure haven't uh but we would have
00:17:48.360 literal wait times for carrots that's nuts if we actually went with government controlled grocery
00:17:53.220 stores do not do that folks i know it may sound attractive when you see big fancy rich people
00:17:58.620 mocking people for the cost of burritos don't go down that road that is a siren song what we need
00:18:03.940 to do here is to stop taxing people to death and to have government quit wasting so much money right
00:18:09.900 stop taking so much money hold on right like here's the thing here's here's how we should
00:18:15.780 fight back yeah number one we shouldn't you know pretend like this isn't a problem it is a problem
00:18:21.200 it could be the problem yeah there's a lot of stuff going on i don't want to downplay some of
00:18:25.640 the other issues that we're facing okay however being able to put food on your family's table
00:18:31.580 is kind of a big deal it's a huge deal it might be the deal okay so we can't just pretend like
00:18:38.320 this isn't going on. Everyone knows who's being honest that life is incredibly expensive and
00:18:43.620 unaffordable, right? Almost, almost all aspects. Okay. So first of all, we've got to acknowledge
00:18:49.000 that there's a massive problem going on. It's been going on for years. Second of all,
00:18:52.660 we've got to go after the government for making life so expensive in a couple of ways. Number
00:18:58.540 one, inflationary taxes, so to speak, like gas taxes that directly make life more expensive.
00:19:03.420 Number two, income taxes or payroll taxes that take more money out of your pocket.
00:19:07.380 And if you had more money in your pocket, you'd have more money to afford everything, right?
00:19:11.840 But number three, the worst tax of all, the inflation tax, okay?
00:19:17.520 Money printing to finance big government deficits.
00:19:21.440 And that's what we saw happening during the pandemic, okay?
00:19:26.260 And we're still paying the price where the federal government, Central Bank, the Bank of Canada,
00:19:31.540 printed hundreds of billions of dollars out of thin air and dumped that newly printed money
00:19:37.100 into an economy that was undergoing revolving government lockdowns. The perfect storm for
00:19:44.260 inflation, too many dollars chasing too few goods. So Chris, just to bring it all back,
00:19:49.060 of course there is an affordability crisis facing people. We don't ignore it. We go after the root
00:19:56.140 problem, which is big taxing, big spending governments, politicians, and central banks
00:20:01.980 that, I mean, quite recently, right, the pandemic, were printing money like crazy.
00:20:07.380 Yes, yes. I'm going to ask you, this is going to be probably a stupidly phrased question,
00:20:12.480 but I'm not the economics major like you are. To me, when I hear you say hundreds of billions
00:20:19.440 of dollars printed out of thin air while things were locked down, meaning the goods weren't being
00:20:23.860 produced. The widgets to soak up the money weren't being produced while we were suddenly printing a
00:20:28.740 whole bunch of money. I have this vision of, say I'm mopping the kitchen floor and all of a sudden
00:20:33.480 I accidentally knock over the bucket. There it goes. That's the money supply. How do we mop that
00:20:41.060 up? Is there a way to fight inflation? I know I'm probably asking a dumb question here. How do we
00:20:47.760 make more mops to soak up that money to reduce the inflation? Is that even possible or is this
00:20:52.780 just something we're gonna have to ride out for the next 10 or 20 years well i haven't looked at
00:20:56.980 the government like the bank came to his data uh recently but not this morning yeah yeah not this
00:21:02.760 morning but let me just stay high level just because i don't have any numbers offhand but
00:21:06.100 number one um the first thing you do is you stop printing money okay the second thing you do is you
00:21:13.780 kill the deficit you kill the deficit you you kill the need to print money okay uh so you balance the
00:21:21.000 budget you stop borrowing money and then number three you got to produce more of the stuff that
00:21:25.160 money buys right so you got to allow for the economy to grow you got to allow for people to
00:21:30.260 be you know businesses to be able to produce stuff right and a huge part of that especially
00:21:34.280 here in Canada is we got to be able to produce and by we I mean the private sector businesses
00:21:39.440 job creators we got to be able to develop an abundant natural resources and be able to
00:21:45.200 export it and be able to take it from point a to point b in canada privately okay because i know
00:21:52.220 we're getting back into another conversation but like look we need pipelines here in canada
00:21:57.080 however what that means is we've got to kill the anti-development regulations and the energy taxes
00:22:02.860 that are deterring this development okay like we can't just have governments continuing to you know
00:22:08.900 muse about at the very least dumping taxpayers money into these projects that's not sustainable
00:22:13.900 and also it shouldn't be done right we need pipelines we need natural resource projects in
00:22:18.800 canada but we need to end the regulations and taxes that are making it almost impossible extremely
00:22:25.680 difficult to actually get that those things built amen i'm going to bring it back to the gas taxes
00:22:32.320 and this beautiful poll um i sound like somebody else right now this big beautiful poll showing
00:22:37.880 that more than 70 percent of canadians want prime minister mark carney to keep this thing suspended
00:22:43.020 to keep it at zero and for folks who are trying to do the math um 10 cents a liter of gasoline is
00:22:48.300 nothing to sneeze at if you're filling up an average size pickup truck that's 10 bucks every
00:22:53.440 time you're saving that money i can get a jug of milk and bread for that like that's actual food
00:23:00.020 on your table um you said 10 bucks chris pardon me you said 10 bucks well you fuel it up once a
00:23:06.580 week that's more than 500 bucks in savings there you go yeah because it's an average size pickup
00:23:12.300 truck has just over 100 liters, so just do the math. It's crazy. So we should definitely be
00:23:18.000 focusing on this. And I wanted to go back and ask you, when the math works out for the government,
00:23:25.920 because quite often I'll have an announcement where I'm saying, hey, this is costing people
00:23:30.760 too much money, yada, yada, something like that. They'll say, yeah, and they mean well,
00:23:35.060 they mean well, the reporters. They'll say, yeah, well, how are we going to pay for roads and
00:23:39.800 bridges? Can the government afford to give us this tax cut? And you just wrote an op-ed where
00:23:45.480 you worked out the numbers. Could Carney's budget afford to be able to give us this break?
00:23:53.160 I mean, the government's wasting money like crazy, and it's been wasting money like crazy for a long
00:23:57.080 time. So there's a lot of fat to cut in Ottawa. But let me just give you one example, and then
00:24:01.980 we can go into more if you'd like. But let me just give you one example, okay? So the federal fuel
00:24:06.400 tax on like gas and diesel and stuff like that it brings in about six billion dollars a year
00:24:11.720 okay that's from the parliamentary budget officer's latest report on the numbers about
00:24:15.820 six billion a year okay well carney is on track to spend six and a half billion dollars over his
00:24:23.420 own budget do you see see that if carney just stuck to his own if carney just stuck to his
00:24:30.640 own budgeted spending numbers not the not the numbers from the canadian taxpayers federation
00:24:35.020 franco and chris but if carney just stuck to his own spending numbers in his own budget
00:24:39.000 he would spend six and a half billion dollars less which is you know so does in in government
00:24:44.740 talk more than enough money to pay for the gas tax cut and to be clear it's his own deficit budget
00:24:51.800 that you're talking about here yeah his own budget and number so if he if he just didn't
00:24:56.000 spend six and a half billion dollars over budget if he cut that six and a half billion and just
00:25:00.560 stuck to his own spending numbers and his own budget, that's more than enough money to pay for
00:25:05.780 the gas tax cut, so to speak, without borrowing a cent more. So this is doable. Yeah. I mean,
00:25:13.180 it's so doable. You know what I mean? I mean, then there's other examples. I mean,
00:25:17.620 the federal government weighs about $11 billion a year on corporate subsidies,
00:25:22.120 more than the gas tax brings in. I mean, almost double, right? The federal bureaucracy,
00:25:27.000 The cost of the federal bureaucracy alone is going up by about $10 billion this year, according to PBO projections.
00:25:34.280 So just don't increase the cost of bureaucracy by $10 billion, right?
00:25:38.260 So, like, all of this is to say, folks, like, those are just three places right off the top of my head.
00:25:44.160 Yes, the federal government can cut gas taxes without borrowing more money.
00:25:49.000 Like, it's, come on.
00:25:52.020 You love to see it.
00:25:53.060 I love it when the numbers actually line up so nicely.
00:25:55.640 like you're not even saying hey carny if he just balanced the budget he'd be able to afford it no
00:26:00.160 no if he stuck to his own deficit spending numbers he'd be able to give us this gas from november
00:26:06.740 his own budget his most recent budget from november practically yesterday guys like he just
00:26:14.020 needs to put his pants on really that's all that needs to happen here don't need to run the whole
00:26:17.700 marathon just get dressed okay um lastly where we wrap this up i just wanted to encourage people
00:26:23.460 franco a is there anything i haven't asked you yet about the poll or the gas yeah yeah okay and and
00:26:28.200 i'll build into the encouragement so maybe this will just be kind of my last statement right so
00:26:32.300 like folks we can get this done we can push uh the carny government to not hike the gas tax in
00:26:41.760 september okay but it takes everyone watching and listening to this okay like as good as chris is in
00:26:48.620 the media and she's fantastic i mean i don't know if i've seen anyone better than her in the media
00:26:52.240 as good as she is, this is going to have to come from the people, okay? So we already have this
00:26:57.140 poll out that shows all the politicians, regardless of a demographic, you have, you know,
00:27:03.020 most Canadians against the gas tax hike in September, you know, 63% is the top line number,
00:27:10.000 you remove the undecided, 71% are against the gas tax hike. But Canadians in every demographic
00:27:16.700 oppose this. And politicians, like I said, they care more about polls in the area they breeze
00:27:21.060 So, you know, they went through the numbers.
00:27:22.580 It's been not just on, you know, shows like Juno, Chris, that you do, or the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, YouTube, but it's also been in the mainstream media.
00:27:31.640 You know, politicians, political staffers, watch that.
00:27:34.540 Okay.
00:27:34.780 So, you know, these politicians are seeing these poll numbers.
00:27:37.240 Okay.
00:27:38.020 What we need to do now to keep up the pressure, folks, it's on all of us.
00:27:41.940 Not just, you know, a couple people here and there, everyone watching, listening.
00:27:46.100 Email the Prime Minister.
00:27:47.700 Tell them that you're not going to tolerate a gas tax hike.
00:27:49.760 tell them you don't oppose or tell them you oppose it it's time to take action and folks i think if
00:27:55.280 we uh you know bring the pressure on i think we're going to force the government to back down on this
00:28:00.460 gas tax hike for a couple reasons number one consumer carbon tax right you folks out there
00:28:05.200 force the liberal government to end the consumer carbon tax because of pressure from you it's not
00:28:10.780 that they wanted to like let's be so real it's because you forced them to yeah okay so we've
00:28:17.100 done it before, we can do it again. Folks, take action. It's on all of us. Amen, Franco. Thank
00:28:23.260 you so much for your time today. Cheers, Simmer. Once again, that is Franco Terrazzano. He is the
00:28:29.060 federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. And you heard it directly from
00:28:33.340 Franco there. Yeah, that's the chart I was holding there, showing the gas taxes just in Alberta
00:28:39.340 and pointing out to the media that we got to do something here, folks. We've got more than 60%
00:28:45.900 or 70% of Canadians saying, do not hike my taxes on fuel. For the love of goodness, we can't afford
00:28:52.640 any more costs here. And it's getting a lot of play. So now is the time. Strike while the iron
00:28:57.880 is hot. Please help Franco and everybody else out by sending an email to the Prime Minister.
00:29:04.600 Send an email and make a phone call to your local MP because they will listen to you because they
00:29:10.920 care about polls because they ultimately care about their own jobs. So say no fuel tax hike
00:29:16.300 in September. Thank you very much. Scrap that plan. Very importantly, this is how we gang up
