00:00:00.000 When it comes to eating very well, Prime Minister Carney is certainly a high flyer with expensive
00:00:10.680 tastes. The PM's airplane food bill is once again under scrutiny after he and his entourage ran up
00:00:17.680 a $175,000 tab. That's right. On a recent flight to China, Qatar, and Davos, passengers,
00:00:26.080 including Kearney, feasted on beef tenderloin veal, truffle risotto, and sea bass. Sounds
00:00:33.180 delicious. And taxpayers will pick up the tab, of course, for a total of $175,248. The Canadian
00:00:41.780 Taxpayers Federation says it's a new record for Kearney. Would you believe a conservative MP once
00:00:47.420 lost her job over a $16 glass of orange juice? Most of the legacy media won't even cover this
00:00:54.180 massive bill for airplane food all this at a time that food banks can't keep enough food in store
00:01:01.140 for the growing numbers of hungry canadians who can't afford the price of groceries these days
00:01:06.820 our guest today is federal director for the ctf franco terrizano welcome franco hey thanks for
00:01:12.180 having me on all right tell us a little bit about this unbelievable bill i mean how can you even
00:01:18.100 spend that much money on airplane food it's it's an eye-popping number yeah i mean 175 000 bucks
00:01:24.580 as you said it's a personal record uh for carney and his entourage right so since he's become prime
00:01:30.420 minister him and his entourage his delegations they've racked up uh an airplane food tab of
00:01:35.480 almost a million bucks right over the span of about a year since he's become prime minister
00:01:40.220 this one's the most expensive i mean how do you rack up a bill like that good question number one
00:01:46.320 you bring a huge delegation, right? A delegation size of like 73 people going on this international
00:01:53.260 trip. Number two, you just have these gourmet multi-course meals, okay? And let me just put
00:01:59.920 in perspective because I love the way you teed it up, right? Canadians are struggling and yet
00:02:04.300 Canadians are paying for politicians and bureaucrats to live the high life on your dime.
00:02:08.740 Let me put it into perspective. $175,000, that is the average Canadian family's grocery bill
00:02:15.240 for more than nine years gone to pay for the airplane food amazing i mean i'm wondering
00:02:23.220 how much coverage by the media has this received i mean it's a crazy number you would think that
00:02:28.960 everybody would be talking about it but i somehow doubt that that's the case am i right well we'll
00:02:34.080 see because this is very early on so you know do you know you guys are always picking this stuff
00:02:38.440 up we'll have other some other independent media organizations i'm sure some of the newspapers
00:02:42.480 we'll pick up pick it up uh we'll do some radio now there has been some previous stories we've
00:02:47.680 done in the past that have taken off including like mainstream tv on some of carney's airplane
00:02:53.280 food so very happy to see that but it's really this the staggering numbers right and let me even
00:02:58.720 put it one more into perspective here okay so our our investigative journalist uh jen hodgson kudos
00:03:04.800 to her because she tallied up the per person per passenger per meal right how much did each meal 1.00
00:03:11.280 cost per passenger and it was like 300 bucks a meal per passenger and what what jen looked at
00:03:18.000 well she looked at a michelin-starred restaurant in beijing right in china one of the places they
00:03:23.300 visited and and their lunch for a michelin-starred uh restaurant was 180 bucks okay and yet the per
00:03:31.800 person per person per meal cost of this airplane food was 300 bucks it's crazy did you find out
00:03:40.360 they were drinking i mean are we talking dom pairing you know we nothing but the best in the
00:03:45.880 way of alcoholic beverages because we've seen those types of numbers in the past where carney
00:03:51.720 and company have had very high quality wine anything about that we have in the past to your
00:03:58.680 point in uh different trips but nothing that i saw on these flight menus for for this 10-day uh
00:04:04.360 international trip but i mean look like we're talking uh four different types of beef dishes
00:04:09.400 here okay even a premium cuts of beef we've got beef tenderloin with demi-glace sauce we have
00:04:15.240 veal escalope i don't even know if i'm pronouncing that right but you've got a veal you got veal
00:04:19.880 dishes here different types of cream sauce you got truffle risotto you have sea bass filet
00:04:25.400 i mean the food sounds delicious mark it's the 175 000 bill that's giving me indigestion
00:04:33.000 you're making me hungry just talking about how
00:04:35.400 How well he ate, though I won't be eating that well myself.
00:04:40.700 But you know what this tells me is how out of touch these people are,
00:04:43.680 or the fact that they really don't care, you know.
00:04:46.880 And, you know, the reason why they might not care is they know that
00:04:51.080 the media is not going to really go after them.
00:04:53.920 Not the way they did Bev Oda back in the day, probably before you were born.
00:04:58.380 You know, this was a conservative cabinet minister who lost her job,
00:05:03.300 essentially over a $16 orange juice, or at least it was the contributing factor,
00:05:08.140 the controversy that was generated from that whole episode.
00:05:11.840 And they made such a, the media made such a stink over the $16 OJ 1.00
00:05:17.040 that it basically forced her out.
00:05:19.640 And now, I mean, nobody even, you know, would blink an eye at a $16.
00:05:24.640 They would think that that was a bargain.
00:05:26.660 I guess my question is, does Carney care about the optics here?
00:05:31.520 mean if he did then we wouldn't be seeing this sort of thing to me it suggests that this guy's
00:05:36.000 hey i'm the boss i get to do whatever i want and i'll eat whatever i want and if my friends want
00:05:42.280 to splurge or want to enjoy a sumptuous meal at the taxpayer's expense then so be it well i don't
00:05:48.940 know what's in carny's mind okay but when i look at spending like this you know what comes to me
00:05:53.680 is like either these politicians these bureaucrats these staffers either they don't know how hard
00:05:59.320 people work for the money they earn and the taxes they pay or they just don't care and i'm not sure
00:06:04.840 which one is worse to be honest with you right and like look it's it's you know sometimes the
00:06:10.200 pushback i'll get from people whether it's online or even in the media is well franco you know
00:06:15.160 doesn't the prime minister have to fly to other countries okay sure fair okay fair enough fair
00:06:20.920 enough we're not saying never go uh into an international meeting okay we can debate each
00:06:25.240 meeting on its merits. But what we're saying is you can travel internationally without dropping
00:06:30.040 six figures on airplane food, right? Like give me a break and not just that. Okay. Because
00:06:34.840 Carney has flown internationally without dropping this much, right? We have previous records that
00:06:41.140 show Carney went on another trip to Europe with 62 people and they spent like 10 grand just under
00:06:47.080 on airplane food, according to the records. So, you know, clearly a prime minister is possible
00:06:52.580 to fly internationally with a delegation without billing taxpayers six figures or close to six
00:06:59.240 figures. Meantime, there's a budget coming up, isn't there? There's a, I don't know if they
00:07:04.360 call it a mini budget or an update or whatever, but there is a budget coming up and we're going
00:07:09.360 to get a glimpse at just the massive size of the deficit. My understanding is it could be 60, 70,
00:07:16.420 80 billion dollars, just staggering amounts of money. And this is already starting to come up
00:07:21.680 in some of the Q&A that we're seeing in the House of Commons.
00:07:25.860 But it'll be an interesting thing to draw a contrast
00:07:28.700 between this incredible amount of money
00:07:31.940 that the government is spending in total
00:07:33.740 and the fact that he continues to splurge
00:07:36.420 the way he does on these flights.
00:07:38.200 Well, we do.
00:07:38.640 We have the full big budget coming out November the 5th
00:07:42.920 in Thursday here in Ottawa for the federal government.
00:07:45.440 And I love that you're tying that in together
00:07:46.860 because in last year's budget,
00:07:48.480 and I bet you they're going to say this all again,
00:07:50.120 they would say, oh, we're spending less. We're spending less. We're finding savings. It's like,
00:07:54.620 are you kidding me? If you're not even willing to spend less on airplane food, what are you
00:07:59.560 willing to spend less on? Okay. And look, Carney is spending billions of dollars over his own
00:08:05.600 budget, not the budget written and given to him by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, your friend
00:08:09.920 Franco. No, he's spending billions of dollars over his own budget. And not just that. Okay.
00:08:15.820 We all remember the Trudeau day. Spending like crazy, out of control. Well, Carney is even
00:08:22.940 spending more money than the guy who is famous for spending far too much. Let me give you an
00:08:27.740 apples to apples comparison or about as close as you can get. In 2024, Trudeau and his entourage
00:08:33.560 go to Italy. They spend $43,000 on airplane food. The next year, 2025, Carney and his entourage go
00:08:40.140 to Italy and spend $93,000 on airplane food. Okay. So if Carney's saying, Hey, we're spending
00:08:48.020 less, do not let him off the hook on that claim. Spending is going up by billions of dollars and
00:08:53.780 they're still wasting your money on stuff like this. Yeah. And I don't think they can pin that
00:08:58.900 on inflation. That's a hundred percent inflationary rate for airplane food between
00:09:04.840 now i i assume that you've reached out to the pmo or at least tried to talk to somebody in
00:09:12.420 the government about this have they responded to you have they said well this is why it is the way
00:09:17.940 it is i haven't heard a response like that i mean most of the pushback that we've got because
00:09:23.460 we've had to see uh like some of this stuff gets into question period right and you you have seen
00:09:28.720 in question period when we put out a story like this some crazy ways some of the other airplane
00:09:32.640 food story and then the opposition mps they'll try to hold the government accountable ask a question
00:09:37.760 and um you know the ministers who stand up to try to defend this they'll give a word salad they'll
00:09:43.880 give you a nothing burger their only defense is kind of the argument that i said earlier or they'll
00:09:48.940 say well the prime minister needs to travel abroad but again it's like okay you know let's even just
00:09:54.600 set that to the side okay travel abroad i guess um but you don't need to spend six figures on
00:10:00.000 airplane food. You know, who doesn't spend that much on airplane food is President Trump. In fact,
00:10:05.720 we have an image that we've captured of Trump, and he's sitting there with another billionaire,
00:10:10.520 at least one billionaire, including the richest man in the world. And here you are seeing them
00:10:16.080 eat McDonald's food. Now, I don't think Carney would be caught dead eating a Big Mac on a flight.
00:10:24.360 I just don't think that that's the way this guy is wired. I mean, he's used to living high up the
00:10:29.040 hog off taxpayers, you know, given his jobs in the past. And it just seems to me that given
00:10:37.760 the struggles that so many Canadians are having right now, that he would at least resonate with
00:10:43.280 that, you know, even on a superficial level and say, look, you know, we can't continue doing this.
00:10:48.500 A lot of Canadians are struggling. Let's, you know, show that we too are, you know, understanding
00:10:54.560 of that and appreciate those efforts and then we're going to cut back you know as as a way of
00:11:00.000 showing that they have a certain level of empathy for the people but i think the opposite is true
00:11:05.340 it's like the more people are struggling you know in canada and the more they spend in ottawa
00:11:11.360 yeah and you know let me just say two things uh mark like first of all look if if carney or any
00:11:18.280 other politician or even or even anyone right if you want to go out to a fancy restaurant and spend
00:11:23.920 your own money on expensive stuff with your own money, fill your boots. Like I personally don't
00:11:29.480 care, right? I might judge you here or there if you're wasting your own money, but I don't really
00:11:33.260 care. It's none of my business if you're spending your own money. It's when you take money from
00:11:36.820 other people who are struggling and then you go spend it on a life of extravagance. That's what
00:11:42.520 makes me upset. And that's what really impacts a taxpayer. But Mark, you know, let me tell you,
00:11:47.180 we go back to, I believe it was about 2022. Anyways, it was a couple of years ago. Okay.
00:11:51.920 the former governor general mary simon right there was a bit of a scandal when uh the news broke that
00:11:57.680 she billed taxpayers a hundred grand for airplane food it got so big there was even this like uh
00:12:04.320 you know many different testimonies in in parliament in a committee and the and the
00:12:08.800 governor general's bureaucrats they acknowledged that the trip was too expensive and that they
00:12:12.800 would do better on these international trips well that was a hundred grand a hundred thousand dollar
00:12:17.680 bill during one international trip and now you see carney uh you know setting a personal record
00:12:23.120 spending 175 000 bucks him and his entourage on airplane food so the government promised
00:12:28.560 it would do better carney promises he's going to spend less but look at the record spending more
00:12:34.480 i think he might want to try for a personal best next time around i'll have to see because
00:12:38.400 now that you've pointed out that it's a record then he's got to beat his own record right oh
00:12:42.480 Oh, don't give him any ideas.
00:12:43.900 Don't get, yeah, come on.
