Christia Freeland, the former Finance Minister and former Deputy Prime Minister and now former Housing Minister is officially out of cabinet. In her resignation letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, she says she no longer enjoys the confidence and authority that comes with the role of Finance Minister, and has found herself at odds with the Prime Minister over fiscal policy.

00:00:00.000 all right major breaking news out of ottawa this morning the liberal cabinet is imploding on itself

00:00:07.020 yesterday we got news that housing minister sean fraser would be announcing his resignation

00:00:11.560 from cabinet this morning we got that but that news was trumped by the biggest domino to fall

00:00:18.620 yet christia freeland the deputy prime minister and now former finance minister is officially

00:00:24.320 out of cabinet with this announcement on twitter today in her resignation letter to justin trudeau

00:00:30.680 which she posted to social media this morning she writes on friday you told me you no longer want me

00:00:36.920 to serve as your finance minister and offered me another position in the cabinet upon reflection i

00:00:42.720 have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the cabinet to be

00:00:48.560 effective a minister must speak on behalf of the prime minister and with his full confidence in

00:00:53.320 making your decision you made clear that i no longer credibly enjoy that confidence and possess

00:00:57.820 the authority that comes with it for the past number of weeks you and i have found ourselves

00:01:02.460 at odds about the best path forward for canada our country today faces a grave challenge the incoming

00:01:08.520 administration in the united states is pursuing a policy of aggressive economic nationalism including

00:01:13.600 a threat of 25 percent tariffs in her statement she takes a shot at justin trudeau saying we need to

00:01:20.040 take that threat extremely seriously that means keeping our fiscal powder dry today so we have

00:01:25.640 the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war that means eschewing costly political gimmicks which we

00:01:31.640 can ill afford and which will make canadians doubt that we recognize the gravity of the moment now

00:01:37.320 freeland's departure is not surprising but the timing certainly is in the lead up to christmas the day that

00:01:43.960 christia freeland is set to announce and to provide canada's fall economic statement she is out of

00:01:50.040 cabinet we have known for many weeks that the prime minister was likely planning to replace christia

00:01:54.680 freeland with the unelected former bank of canada and former bank of england governor mark carney now

00:02:00.920 today that looks certainly more likely now we know that on friday justin trudeau essentially fired

00:02:06.760 christia freeland from the finance minister position and tried to offer her a soft landing position 1.00

00:02:12.760 somewhere lower down the pecking order in in the cabinet which makes christia freeland's answer 0.89

00:02:17.480 to that global mail journalist on friday in which she appeared emotional she appeared almost on the

00:02:22.120 verge of tears all the more interesting take a look at this hi there it's laura stone globe and

00:02:27.080 mail we've all agreed to do one question so everyone can get in um minister freeland we've been

00:02:32.120 reporting all week about tension between your office and the prime minister's office over the fiscal

00:02:37.400 policy in this country we've said that the prime minister is again in talks with mark carney to

00:02:43.160 join the government and the prime minister appears unwilling to personally defend you in public how

00:02:49.560 can you stay in the government when the prime minister continually tries to cut you off at the knees like

00:02:55.160 that and will you fight back against this effort to replace you well thank you for the question uh

00:03:08.840 for me it is a huge privilege that i do not take for granted to serve canada and canadians every single

00:03:18.840 day it's a big deal there are kids here who went to school with my daughter who are great young

00:03:26.760 innovators and i'm really proud to be able to offer them something that will help their company i'm proud

00:03:37.000 and grateful to be able to serve in the cabinet of the prime minister and i really don't spend a lot of

00:03:46.200 time focusing on ottawa gossip my focus is on doing what i can to serve canada and canadians

00:03:55.880 in what's a really challenging time for our country clearly emotional voice cracking you can see that

00:04:02.440 the liberal cabinet is imploding now just before christia freeland's bombshell breaking news announcement

00:04:09.400 we got the announcement from sean fraser the former housing minister that he too was going to be

00:04:15.400 resigning his position remember sean fraser is largely responsible for the worst immigration 0.98

00:04:21.480 policies this country has ever seen for being responsible for the international student debacle

00:04:26.920 in this country in which over a million international students were in this country which resulted in

00:04:33.080 international students protesting across this country demanding permanent residency and it was sean 0.66

00:04:38.520 fraser's policies as immigration minister that soured this country on immigration which completely flipped

00:04:46.360 canada's consensus on immigration he was then shuffled into the housing minister job another very important

00:04:54.520 position which he too happened to fail for example just look at canada's housing starts with sean

00:05:00.040 fraser as the minister housing starts have decreased in this country despite the fact that our population

00:05:06.600 has been increasing at a rate faster than we've ever seen it two massive resignations out of justin

00:05:12.200 trudeau's cabinet this morning on monday the day of the fall economic statements release this is going

00:05:18.360 to get very interesting the question now is how much longer does justin trudeau have left as prime minister

00:05:25.080 many believed christia freeland to be the brains of the operation to be the intellectual force for justin

00:05:32.360 trudeau which is shocking to believe but that is what people believe christia freeland however in

00:05:37.080 her statement did commit to fighting for re-election in university rosedale for her toronto

00:05:43.720 seat so christia freeland no longer deputy prime minister no longer the minister of finance she is

00:05:49.480 still an mp and after all she does still have that coveted board of trustees seat at the world economic 0.99

00:05:56.120 forum now if there's any more major breaking news this week we will be back with another update but

00:06:01.160 for now that is all we've got for you today on the show thank you so much for tuning in

00:06:04.760 my name is harrison valkner and this is ratioed
