00:00:14.060 we're going to be talking about on today's show. A Medicine Hat High School is receiving backlash

00:00:18.340 after students sought instructions for how to safely prepare illicit substances for consumption.

00:00:23.920 The chief of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says there's an unacceptable number of serious

00:00:28.800 injury-causing and even fatal fires in the city's homeless encampments. And finally,

00:00:34.100 Canada will have to be zero emissions by 2035 under a new electric vehicle availability standard.

00:00:40.580 And you better believe that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has some thoughts.

00:00:44.460 All that and more happening now on the Alberta Roundup.

00:00:46.760 Starting with our first topic here, a Medicine Hat school is receiving backlash after students

00:01:01.180 were given pamphlets informing them how to safely consume illicit substances. Pamphlets included

00:01:07.260 information on quote, safer crystal meth smoking, safer crack smoking, and safer snorting. The material

00:01:15.140 was made available by a booth from Safe Link, Alberta, a harm reduction organization. The pamphlet

00:01:21.540 was among several distributed at a wellness booth at the school earlier this month. Sarah Anderson,

00:01:26.760 a parent at the high school, told Chat News she was disappointed with the pamphlet, adding that she was

00:01:31.480 so mad and that the information was inappropriate for high school students. Safe Link said pamphlets were

00:01:36.780 not actively handed out and were removed from the booth after a request by school administrators

00:01:42.000 within an hour of the start of the event. In a letter addressed to parents, Principal Dean Brown

00:01:47.100 apologized. He said quote, to be clear, we are not okay with content being shared in our school

00:01:53.220 and we are committed to doing better. We want to share a sincere apology with our students and

00:01:58.800 families. In a statement, Safe Link said that students using amphetamines is not uncommon across

00:02:04.340 southern Alberta. Safe Link said quote, in sharing this information, our intention is not to promote

00:02:10.460 substance use, particularly in youth. Instead, Safe Link said they hope the information would be used

00:02:16.020 by students who are already using to prevent disease transmission and overdose deaths. Mark

00:02:21.740 Davidson, the superintendent of the Medicine Hat School Division, said the pamphlet came as a surprise.

00:02:27.740 He said quote, as a father, educator, superintendent, and member of our community, I was angered by the

00:02:33.680 materials Safe Link displayed for students. He said the materials were not reviewed ahead of time by high

00:02:38.980 school staff and that they will now work harder to make sure they screen what comes into schools.

00:02:44.660 He added quote, as a result of this incident, we are redoubling our efforts to ensure all outside 1.00

00:02:50.020 agencies understand the need for caution, respect, and sound judgment when they are guests in our

00:02:55.620 schools. Moving into our next story here, the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says there is an

00:03:00.500 unacceptable number of serious injury-causing and even fatal fires in the city's homeless encampments.

00:03:07.580 Joe Zatlany described the camps as extremely unsafe for the people living there, as well as for the

00:03:13.580 fire rescue service and the surrounding neighbors. Zatlany said there are issues of crime and safety,

00:03:19.700 particularly in the camps that are close to the river valley or near buildings. He described what

00:03:24.340 it's like for the fire rescue services when they have to attend an incident in one of these

00:03:28.480 encampments, saying quote, they're made of materials not meant to build, tents and structures.

00:03:34.200 There's all sorts of storage and materials and items that can easily explode in these structures.

00:03:39.820 People are cooking in them and they're struggling with all sorts of issues, right from addictions

00:03:44.180 to mental health. And it is an extremely unsafe situation and presents many challenges for our

00:03:50.360 first responders. Our firefighters have risen to this challenge and continue to do incredible work

00:03:55.180 for our most vulnerable. He said the people living in these structures need more resources

00:03:59.840 and the encampments need to be taken down immediately. Alberta Premier Daniel Smith responded

00:04:05.060 to the chief's comments, saying they are another example of how quote, organized crime operating

00:04:09.980 drug markets is making encampments dangerous for our most vulnerable and the surrounding community.

00:04:14.700 Moving into what we're watching in the weeks to come, the federal government has announced

00:04:18.180 that it will appeal the federal court's decision to overturn its plastic span. Alberta Premier Daniel

00:04:23.900 Smith said her government will keep fighting for what's right. Here's what that sounded like.

00:04:29.120 Alberta will keep standing up for what's right. And in this case, what's right is the fact that

00:04:33.580 plastics aren't actually toxic. If they were, they wouldn't be in nearly every product in the economy.

00:04:40.180 And Alberta can't regulate, or Ottawa can't regulate whatever it wants by arbitrarily classifying

00:04:45.220 something as a toxic substance. But we shouldn't be surprised by this, which should come as no surprise

00:04:50.800 to Ottawa that we intend to continue pushing back on their unreasonable and unconstitutional orders.

00:04:56.600 We were interveners in the original case, and we will stay involved throughout the appeals process.

00:05:01.880 The stakes are too high to do anything less. If Ottawa's approach ultimately wins, it will be a

00:05:06.700 disaster for Alberta's and Canada's economy. It would destroy our petrochemicals industry,

00:05:12.580 driving away tens of billions of dollars in investment and eliminating tens of thousands of jobs.

00:05:16.940 And it will harm the progress that's occurring in plastics, reuse and recycling.

00:05:21.620 Ottawa should listen to these objections. They come from the courts and the constitution and the

00:05:26.720 provinces and the people Ottawa claims to serve. And finally, moving into the controversy of the

00:05:31.280 week, the federal government has announced that all new vehicles in Canada must be electric vehicles

00:05:36.780 by 2035. That falls under its new electric vehicle availability standard. The federal government is

00:05:43.340 pitching the program as a means to ensure that EVs are available quickly for people who want to get

00:05:48.640 them, which is interesting when you consider how little uptake there's been on electric vehicles

00:05:53.440 in Canada. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said her government will do everything within its legal

00:05:58.760 jurisdiction to thwart implementation of the unconstitutional regulations in the province.

00:06:03.920 She added, quote, in another show of total disregard for the well-being of Canadians,

00:06:10.060 the federal government has unilaterally imposed an unconstitutional edict with a bizarrely impossible

00:06:15.800 timeline that will result in massive increases in the cost of vehicles and utility bills, vehicle

00:06:21.860 rationing and weightless, increased cost to businesses and elevated difficulty and safety risk for

00:06:28.040 hundreds of thousands of Albertans and Canadians just trying to get to work and family activities

00:06:32.680 in our unpredictable and often cold climate. Later on, while speaking about the announcement on the

00:06:38.440 Sean Newman podcast, Premier Smith said that soon Canadians will have to put their name on a list

00:06:44.100 at the beginning of the year in hopes of being able to get a new vehicle. Take a listen to her

00:06:49.280 comments for yourself. I'm beginning to wonder what in the world, why this federal government has handed

00:06:54.320 over all of the reins of decision making to somebody who is so clearly destructive, destructive

00:06:59.460 national unity, destructive to our economies. I was on a show on the weekend and I said, you know,

00:07:04.440 maybe the rest of the country doesn't have a lot of sympathy for Alberta because we have been a

00:07:08.840 major oil and natural gas producer and it has caused tension because we are so wealthy. But if they

00:07:13.960 allow Gibault to come and kill our principal industry, it'll be their industry next. And we're

00:07:19.280 seeing it. They're about to set out on destroying the auto manufacturing industry with aggressive targets

00:07:24.980 that everyone is going to have by electric vehicles as their new vehicle by 2035. There's no way to

00:07:31.280 to force people to buy electric vehicles. So it just means what they're going to do is start

00:07:35.660 ratcheting down the amount of production they do on regular cars. We're entering into a world where

00:07:40.420 we're going to literally have to sign up at the beginning of the year because they're going to

00:07:44.760 ration the number of vehicles that are sold into a given market. This is crazy.

00:07:55.240 agreement with Premier Smith's assessment of Gibault. He is a zealot, an extremist, and he hasn't changed

00:08:01.140 from his days in Greenpeace. On top of that, he and his crowd are dead wrong about the imminent threat

00:08:06.660 of climate change. Yes, it is a problem, but not one that threatens our immediate future as Gibault
