00:00:00.000 I'm coming to you from Davos, Switzerland, where we've just wrapped up day one of the
00:00:03.620 World Economic Forum's 2023 annual meeting. A lot of the really meaty sessions don't start
00:00:08.840 until tomorrow, Tuesday. Today was more of a ceremonial affair, but even so, they went
00:00:13.680 right headfirst into things by talking about how we can all live climate-positive lifestyles.
00:00:19.000 What is a climate-positive lifestyle for you?
00:00:22.420 Yeah, so I think the challenge is that, except for Indigenous people who really had this
00:00:28.460 nature-positive lifestyle, today we have such a footprint with everything we do.
00:00:34.080 Even if we come with the train, there's always a big footprint in producing this train, in producing
00:00:40.140 the rails. So, actually, it's not possible in Switzerland to have a climate-positive or nature-positive
00:00:48.440 lifestyle, except if you're actively investing into nature. And I think this is what we need.
00:00:55.580 We need not just to talk about the footprint, but also the handprint. So, that's why also
00:01:02.440 I dedicate my full professional life in Parliament, but also I work at South Pole. We try to have
00:01:09.500 a positive impact on the world. And I think this needs to be an ambition that we invest into
00:01:14.940 nature to have, again, this positive net balance.
00:01:19.620 That was the first discussion to take place at this year's World Economic Forum annual meeting,
00:01:25.140 though much of the festivities today were actually more ceremonial in nature. They held the annual
00:01:30.060 Crystal Awards, where they reward some of their honoured celebrity guests for all their work and
00:01:34.760 all their participation in things like climate change and sustainability and all of that. The opera
00:01:39.640 singer Renee Fleming received an award, the actor Idris Elba. And they also gave a big warm welcome to
00:01:45.540 members of the media who are here, ostensibly, to cover the World Economic Forum. Tonight had a media
00:01:51.940 welcome reception, which I, as an accredited member of the press, was invited to. Mainly, I just wanted
00:01:57.300 to see the spread that was going to be put out for journalists and see if that might be influencing,
00:02:01.460 one way or another, whether these journalists are prepared to ask the tough questions. Idris Elba and a
00:02:06.100 couple of representatives of the United Nations were there in what was more of a social affair for
00:02:11.380 journalists and the WEF than anything else. Now, as I said, this is just the first day. We've got four
00:02:16.740 more days to come and we'll be carrying all of this with you. Things that are happening in the sessions,
00:02:21.540 things that are happening on the streets outside of Davos, whether it's conversations on the sidelines
00:02:25.940 with various participants or protests like the one that took place on the weekend before this even
00:02:30.740 started. If you have anything you want to see here, do let us know in the comments section. And again,
00:02:35.380 we are here with just my videographer and I. We don't have the giant TV crew team that a lot of the
00:02:39.780 mainstream media outlets do. So if you want to support our work here, please head over to
00:02:43.860 donate.tnc.news, donate.tnc.news. From Davos for True North, I'm Andrew Lawton.
