00:00:00.000 We find ourselves in a pretty interesting situation here in Canada right now when it
00:00:08.020 comes to discussions about COVID-19. A number of provincial medical officers of health,
00:00:13.540 they're really trying to call for balance now. I think they see what's going on with all of
00:00:18.400 these COVID busybodies who are just still kind of manically, hour by hour, obsessed with all
00:00:24.660 things COVID and still believe absolutely everything everyone does everywhere should
00:00:28.640 revolve around coronavirus. And they're looking at this and they're going, oh man, we really got
00:00:33.360 people into a pretty unhealthy situation here. I mean, we're trying to point out the good news
00:00:37.720 about the vaccination rates and, you know, this new path forward, but there's a lot of people who
00:00:42.360 are still really kind of clutching to the old ways and we got to help them. And basically they're
00:00:47.180 trying to de-radicalize people because of course there's a lot of people who still have these
00:00:51.960 perspectives and you see it playing out really in a number of different provinces, immaterial of
00:00:57.040 the politics of the governing party. And of course the chief medical officer, different ones from
00:01:02.680 different provinces. The main example is of course, Dr. Dina Henshaw. I know people want to make
00:01:07.080 allegations about there being politics going on there. Although other folks point out, hey, don't
00:01:11.000 forget Dina Henshaw was actually picked by former NDP Premier Rachel Notley to be in that position.
00:01:17.260 So it's not like she's someone that Jason Kenney sort of brought his person in to do the job.
00:01:22.240 Dina Henshaw being the one who's sort of most kind of aggressively bringing her province towards the
00:01:27.280 learning to live with COVID situation. They're going to be changing the rules so that if you test
00:01:31.500 positive for COVID-19, you no longer are legally forced to stay in your home for 14 days. She still
00:01:37.400 encourages people to follow these protocols, be very respectful, mindful of everyone and so forth,
00:01:41.960 not spread the virus, but she's kind of stepping away from the very heavy handed stuff. Lots of similar
00:01:47.360 things from Dr. Bonnie Henry and, pleasant surprise, Ontario heading in that direction as well.
00:01:54.140 Really interesting to see Dr. Kieran Moore. He's the new chief medical officer of health for Ontario.
00:01:58.400 It was really sort of unclear where he would head. He has a guest op-ed that was posted online at the
00:02:04.400 Toronto Star. I'm saying online specifically for a reason. Posted online at the Toronto Star where he
00:02:09.620 talks about how, yes, cases are going to rise in the fall, but this is not a cause for panic. And he points
00:02:16.380 out a number of reasons why about that's going to have lower deaths and hospitalizations because so
00:02:21.960 many people are vaccinated, talking about managing things in a much better way. And he talks about
00:02:26.920 how COVID-19, it's going to be with us for a very long time. I guess for the rest of our natural
00:02:31.960 lives, most likely we need to learn to live with it. That's him speaking, not me. That's a line
00:02:36.320 from him. I couldn't help but notice though that that piece, it appeared that the Toronto Star posted
00:02:41.060 it on their Twitter account just once. Other stories that they really want to amplify, they put it out,
00:02:45.600 you know, several times and it's not in the print edition. There's a number of columns on vaccine
00:02:51.320 passports and so forth from non-experts, non-medical people, but they got this great submission from the
00:02:56.540 chief medical officer of the province who clearly had a message to get out. And I guess it clearly felt
00:03:01.560 like Toronto Star readers in particular needed to hear that message. And then for whatever reason, I don't
00:03:07.300 know about the decisions that were going on in that newsroom, but they post online, but they don't run it in the
00:03:11.680 print edition the next day. Traditionally, when you would run something the day after, it's been posted
00:03:16.980 online. So we have these chief medical officers who, whatever you think of what they did earlier,
00:03:22.000 and I think they're largely responsible for pushing a lot of people into the very sort of severe mindset
00:03:27.880 they have right now about COVID, but they're acknowledging that we got to get people out of
00:03:31.900 that mindset. We got to start going in a different direction. So well, kudos to them for doing that,
00:03:36.620 but it looks like they're facing roadblocks, hurdles, and pushback from a whole lot of people. So
00:03:42.120 hopefully they will make progress on all of this, but well, hopefully their message can also get out.
