00:00:00.000 Prime Minister Carney's plans for an alliance with the EU is setting off some alarm bells among those who see it as a possible threat to Canadian sovereignty.
00:00:14.000 Let's listen first to what Carney had to say when asked about Canada joining the EU.
00:00:19.000 We're not looking to become a member of the European Union.
00:00:22.000 What we are looking and will begin discussions for unique alliance with the European Union,
00:00:30.000 between Canada and the European Union. We share the same values, we have the same priorities,
00:00:35.000 and we have very complementary strengths. We're stronger together and this is at a time
00:00:40.000 where the world is more dangerous and divided and friends need to stick together at these times.
00:00:45.000 What exactly does he mean by unique alliance?
00:00:47.860 Given Carney's long-standing ties to Europe, Canadians can be forgiven for questioning the man's loyalties.
00:00:54.220 Is he serving the interests of Canada or of Europe, where he spent many years living and working and visits frequently now?
00:01:01.740 Is Canada being gift-wrapped as a colony to Europe while Canadians relinquish control over their own affairs, the bureaucrats in Brussels?
00:01:11.520 Our guest today is Pierre Pauly, a leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
00:01:15.480 Welcome, Pierre.
00:01:17.000 Thank you for having me, Mark.
00:01:18.640 What do you suppose the Prime Minister means when he's talking about a unique alliance with Europe?
00:01:25.100 Nobody knows because he won't say.
00:01:27.760 We already have free trade with Europe.
00:01:29.560 We have 99% of our products and services can enter the European market tariff-free.
00:01:37.140 Thank you, Stephen Harper, for signing the Canada-EU free trade agreement.
00:01:42.160 That's been in place for over a decade, so it can't really mean free trade.
00:01:45.980 We already have that. I don't think it could mean a military alliance because we've been part of NATO for decades, and that includes 30 European countries.
00:01:56.960 So that kind of alliance already exists. That leaves very little left for him to sign.
00:02:05.680 You know, if he's talking about forcing Canadians to pay taxes to Brussels bureaucrats or to follow European Union laws that we never voted on or, God forbid, to bring European policies for immigration, that would be a disaster for Canada.
00:02:26.360 We will never support forcing Canadians to pay European taxes, follow European laws, or welcome European policy on immigration that would further overwhelm our hospitals, housing, and jobs.
00:02:45.240 What would that look like, European-style immigration? 0.97
00:02:48.760 Are we going to get the people that they don't want? 0.68
00:02:51.780 Maybe you could expand on that a little bit.
00:02:53.700 Well, again, I don't know what he's proposing. All I can tell you is that we're a country. We should decide our own borders, our own immigration, our own tax levels, our own laws. That's sovereignty. And that is what we will as conservatives defend.
00:03:08.900 But we're all left speculating because so far all we have are leaks from the Canadian and European governments to the Wall Street Journal, combined with wordplay by the Prime Minister.
00:03:23.280 He won't show up in Canada's House of Commons to answer any questions.
00:03:27.800 So we're all left wondering what he's talking about.
00:03:31.380 We just walked away from a trade deal with the United States and immediately entered into talk with members of the EU aimed at allying our country to Europe in ways that we don't even understand.
00:03:45.820 I mean, the Americans say that we're the ones who blew up the deal. Is it possible that Prime Minister Carney did that as a pretext to do what he wanted to do all along?
00:03:55.580 And I realize we're entering the realm of the speculative here, but I can't help but ask and wonder, given what happened with the sudden end of trade negotiations with the United States, when everybody thought, or many of us thought, that there was a deal in place, including the president of the United States, and then poof, that falls apart, and next thing you know, we're cozying up to the EU.
00:04:18.160 Does any of this raise alarm bells for you?
00:04:20.540 well look the way to put that all the rest is for the prime minister to just release the text
00:04:27.140 of the agreement that he had accepted and then then turned around and reject it um he he won't
00:04:34.040 tell us he won't show us what's in that agreement so it's very hard for me to comment on whether it
00:04:38.640 was a good or bad deal um we we know that he can release it because whatever confidentiality that
00:04:46.480 one might claim exists in those conversations is over. Both governments on both sides of the
00:04:52.880 border have been commenting very openly about what they say was in the deal, but we're getting
00:04:58.140 conflicting reports. So either way, there is no confidentiality requirement or being practiced.
00:05:03.760 So he can release the text and then let Canadians judge whether it was a deal that he should have
00:05:08.420 walked away from. You were just in the United States. You spoke with members of the media,
00:05:13.760 some of whom have close ties with President Trump, like Larry Kudlow, for instance.
00:05:19.720 Were you offered any opportunity to have a chat with the president while you were down there?
00:05:26.840 No, and that wasn't my purpose. My goal was to speak to the American people. I believe our
00:05:31.380 single greatest asset on the state side of the border is the hundreds of millions of Americans
00:05:38.380 who love Canada and frankly who would benefit from buying our goods tariff-free. So I went and
00:05:45.840 spoke to Mr. Kudlow's extremely brilliant economist and business commentator. He, as you point out,
00:05:55.300 was in the previous administration and he basically said on air on a program that I 1.00
00:06:03.000 understand the president watches from time to time that the tariffs on Canada are stupid and 0.95
00:06:08.260 so i agree with him on that and i used the occasion to argue for tariff free trade there on 0.96
00:06:14.660 cnvc on bloomberg and got a great reception i went met with some investors and other business
00:06:22.820 people in manhattan and they too agreed the tariff free trade is good for americans so
00:06:28.500 it was a great chance to put the country first fight to save you money and save canadians jobs
00:06:35.380 and that's what we did are we any closer to starting restarting talks um i've heard that
00:06:42.980 maybe that's already happening what's your sense of where we are in terms of negotiations
00:06:48.900 to try and get those uh discussions back on the rails
00:06:55.060 well it's hard to know again because the prime minister won't speak openly about what he's doing
00:06:59.380 but he claims that he's again speaking with the president so we're hopeful that that will lead to
00:07:05.380 talks to get a deal to end the tariffs in both directions. But we encourage the Prime Minister
00:07:14.680 to tell us where he's at when he's planning to get back to the table. He said that he's ready
00:07:19.180 to do that. Great. And when is it going to happen? Let's be real. Crime is up. Repeat offenders are
00:07:26.100 released on bail. Police responses are slower than ever. And in many places, law-abiding citizens
00:07:32.560 are expected to just hope nothing bad happens.
00:07:35.280 That's not good enough.
00:07:36.540 And that's why I'm very pleased today
00:07:37.820 to be telling you about Berna.
00:07:39.500 And I'm so pleased to have this partnership
00:07:41.020 with Juno News because I actually own one myself.
00:07:43.800 I bought one before we ever had this deal with Berna.
00:07:46.500 So what is Berna?
00:07:47.160 It is a non-lethal self-defense launcher
00:07:50.600 that gives you real protection without carrying a firearm.
00:07:54.340 It looks like a firearm.
00:07:55.400 It kind of feels like a firearm, but it's not.
00:07:57.360 It's non-lethal.
00:07:58.440 So Berna launchers look and feel like a real handgun,
00:08:00.980 but they don't use bullets.
00:08:02.560 Instead, they fire powerful kinetic rounds designed to stop a threat from a distance
00:08:07.040 up to 60 feet without lethal force.
00:08:09.960 Here's why it matters.
00:08:11.200 You don't need a firearms license.
00:08:12.960 You don't need a background check.
00:08:14.580 There's no waiting period.
00:08:15.740 There's no permanent life-altering consequences if you're forced into the situation where
00:08:21.620 you have to defend yourself.
00:08:22.700 Use the link in the description or visit junomarketplace.com slash Berna for special offers.
00:08:28.240 Make sure that you're prepared.
00:08:29.900 It's better to be safe than sorry.
00:08:32.560 What's your main takeaway from your conversations with the Americans?
00:08:37.180 Not just the ones that were on air, but maybe the ones that you have on the side with people like Tadlo.
00:08:46.500 You know, Mark, I guess what strikes me is that there is no constituency in the United States for cariffing Canada.
00:08:54.320 There are Americans who have problems with Beijing and with Russia and with Mexico,
00:08:59.140 but there really is no body of American people who dislike or resent Canada.
00:09:05.540 Obviously, there's trade detergents.
00:09:08.380 There always are between any two countries.
00:09:10.580 But by and large, most Americans seem mystified by how we ended up in a trade war
00:09:15.420 with these two incredible neighbors who've worked well together
00:09:20.300 for basically ever since the end of the War of 1812.
00:09:24.160 so I walked away actually quite optimistic that we can get a deal that would get rid of or at
00:09:32.060 least come close to getting rid of all the tariffs in both directions and that would save money and
00:09:36.540 jobs for both countries so I guess I come back you asked me what I take away I come back feeling
00:09:41.520 optimistic about tariff-free trade and moving forward. Any thoughts about the investor summit
00:09:48.660 where former Prime Minister Harper
00:09:51.600 set to deliver a speech.
00:09:53.860 Well, I think it's great Harper is speaking.
00:09:56.080 No one has more credibility than him.
00:09:58.540 He and I spoke a few days back
00:10:00.100 and I said to him,
00:10:02.440 let's bring some investment to Canada.
00:10:03.800 God, we need it.
00:10:04.820 We've lost a trillion dollars of net investment
00:10:07.140 since the Liberals took office
00:10:08.700 and that net outflow has continued under Mark Carney.
00:10:12.640 There's been about 20 billion more Canadian dollars
00:10:15.300 being invested abroad
00:10:16.400 But then there has been foreign dollars invested here.
00:10:19.080 Most of what's coming into Canada is just foreign takeovers that don't build anything new.
00:10:24.060 So we do need someone like Prime Minister Harper, hopefully, to send a message to get things back on track.
00:10:29.200 I have no problem with Mr. Carney holding a summit, but we've had a year and a half of speeches, summits and symbolic signing ceremonies, but no results for you.
00:10:39.100 your grocery bill, your gas prices, your mortgage and rent payments. All of those things are worse
00:10:46.680 today than when Carney took office. So he's got to plunk himself at his desk and do the things
00:10:52.600 here at home that need to get done. Approve the 500 major projects that are sitting on the federal
00:10:59.320 desk waiting for a permit. Get rid of the industrial carbon tax and the capital gains tax
00:11:04.460 on reinvestments in Canada, bring permitting times down to a year, get taxes, set sales tax
00:11:11.920 off Canadian made automobiles to save you money and save auto workers their jobs. These are kind
00:11:17.200 of practical real world things that he could do for you, for Canadian, for the Canadian people.
00:11:24.180 So, you know, fine, hold a summit, give a speech, by all means, do the occasional trip. But I think
00:11:30.480 it's time for the prime minister to actually show real results in the in the lives of real people
00:11:34.920 i've got a couple of minutes left before we let you go uh there was the airport announcement as
00:11:41.120 well uh with partnerships posed partnerships with private investors who want to basically
00:11:49.840 run the airports or may want to run the airports for airports uh in canada i don't know to the
00:11:55.660 degree that might connect with the summit that we're holding right now. What are your thoughts
00:12:01.500 generally about whether this is a positive move on the part of the government? We need to see
00:12:06.100 details, but I'll tell you the criteria is very simple for conservatives. Does it save you money
00:12:10.660 when you fly? Our number one priority is to save you money. Save you money in air travel,
00:12:18.380 filling up your tank grocery shopping rent mortgages save you money now what are what is
00:12:26.460 the deal is he we don't want a sweetheart deal that will profit corporate power brokers and
00:12:32.840 liberal insiders but if he can get private investment that will improve air travel at a
00:12:39.780 lower cost to passengers then then that's another story so let's get the details find out what he's
00:12:45.740 actually proposing. And we'll take it from there because, you know, God knows we need to do
00:12:51.520 something to save people money. I mean, he's talked about possibly modeling it on what we've
00:12:57.880 seen in other countries. I know Australia did a similar thing back in the 1990s, offering 50-year
00:13:04.200 leases, that sort of thing. And it's been a mixed bag in terms of whether people like it or not. So
00:13:09.820 I guess to your point, we'll just have to wait to see. These are crown jewels. They're massive
00:13:15.000 assets that have enormous commercial value. The fees they collect from the airlines are absolutely
00:13:25.040 enormous. The real estate itself is worth billions of dollars. So we're going to be there asking the
00:13:32.180 tough questions, protecting your assets. These things belong to you and every single Canadian,
00:13:37.440 Mark. They don't belong to corporate power brokers and liberal insiders. They belong to
00:13:42.440 the Canadian people, and we want to maximize the benefit to Canadians and, and save you money at
00:13:48.460 the same time. Here, Paulio, thank you so much for coming on the show. We appreciate it. Great to be
00:13:53.120 with you. Many blessings to you and your viewers. And you. If you enjoyed the show, we appreciate it.
