00:00:00.000 hey everyone welcome back to the alberta roundup i'm your host rachel emanuel i hope that you guys
00:00:14.160 are having a great weekend so far let's take a look at what happened this week in alberta politics
00:00:19.120 dino hinshaw has been hired in bc there's a new public safety strategy for edmonton
00:00:24.240 and finally the ucp's recovery plan for addictions and homelessness is hitting a big milestone this
00:00:31.040 month all that and more happening now on the alberta roundup okay guys let's dive into this
00:00:36.480 first story here because i know you guys are gonna have a lot to say about it alberta's former chief
00:00:40.800 medical health officer dr dino hinshaw has been given a six-month contract in bc as the deputy
00:00:46.720 provincial health officer i'm sure you guys remember that during the united conservative
00:00:50.640 party leadership race this past summer danielle smith now the premier campaigned on promises to
00:00:55.520 do away with dino hinshaw and the coven 19 restrictions she implemented smith made good
00:01:00.640 on those promises very quickly after being elected and hinshaw was turfed in november but the bc
00:01:06.080 government says hinshaw will quote support the work of the office of the provincial health officer
00:01:11.200 dr bonnie henry while filling in for another deputy provincial health officer in a statement henry wrote
00:01:17.360 quote i feel very fortunate to work alongside such talented and dedicated public health experts
00:01:23.520 and i know their expertise will be a great assistance as we emerge from the pandemic and
00:01:28.480 continue to address the many public health challenges facing the province under hinshaw's leadership
00:01:33.520 during the coven 19 pandemic the kenny government implemented vaccine passports and closed schools
00:01:38.640 and churches for a while and you guys likely remember the backlash hinshaw received when it was revealed
00:01:43.280 that she took home a 228 000 covid bonus in 2021 and that was on top of her over 360 000 salary
00:01:52.160 so in 2021 she took home well over half a million dollars let me know in the comment section below
00:01:58.000 what you think about hinshaw getting hired in bc another big story this week is that the alberta
00:02:02.720 government announced measures to improve safety in edmonton if you guys live in edmonton you know how
00:02:07.760 unsafe the city can be especially if you need to use public transit so the alberta government made an
00:02:12.640 announcement to that effect earlier this week take a listen to those comments now when the provincial
00:02:16.720 government announced the edmonton task force i made it very clear that action must be taken
00:02:22.720 immediately today i'm proud to share that we are doing just that in partnership with the edmonton
00:02:29.600 police service elberta sheriffs are being redeployed to the downtown streets and keeping edmontonians
00:02:35.840 safe by establishing a more visible presence with more boots on the ground we can deter crime and
00:02:42.640 make albertans who live work and visit these communities feel safe with the help of alberta
00:02:49.360 sheriffs eps can run these patrols seven days a week and cover a larger geographic area a larger area may
00:02:56.800 include specific lrt locations the pedway system and other areas of high crime and social disorder and that
00:03:03.680 announcement was met with a positive reaction from edmonton's chinatown community representatives
00:03:08.560 said that crime has cost them millions of dollars in damages in the past in the past year chinatown has
00:03:15.760 suffered numerous and unprecedented safety issue in our community we have suffered from
00:03:25.760 millions of dollars worth of property damages we have loss of businesses we have lost our personal
00:03:37.120 safety aspect of everything and including life itself so with this action by the province and the police
00:03:50.080 i would like to thank you because without action there will be no moving forward moving on to
00:03:55.520 our next story here for those of you who have kids at home you might be following the federal and
00:03:59.120 provincial government's efforts to provide ten dollars a day child daycare in november 2021 alberta
00:04:04.960 and ottawa agreed on a 3.8 billion dollar deal to reduce child care to ten dollars a day in the
00:04:10.640 province within five years the original deal included plans to open 42 500 new non-profit spaces tuesday's
00:04:18.400 announcement would add an additional 22 500 spaces with the hopes of having them operational by 2025 to
00:04:25.040 2026 the deal officially called the canada alberta canada wide early learning and child care agreement
00:04:31.200 that is an absolute mouthful i feel like they could have come up with a better name
00:04:34.560 it's expected to save parents between 450 and 635 dollars per month for each child receiving full-time
00:04:41.840 care that's an absolutely massive amount of savings it's good news for parents who rely on those spaces
00:04:47.200 okay moving into our daily comment roundup last week we spent a lot of time going over the cbc story
00:04:52.720 you guys remember the details i'm sure cbc has written two stories alleging that the premier has
00:04:58.000 in some way or another put pressure on the justice minister and crown prosecutors regarding cases
00:05:03.440 related to the covet 19 pandemic and the coots border blockade no emails or evidence of other
00:05:08.720 exchanges between the premier and the crowd prosecutors being inappropriate has been uncovered
00:05:13.120 and the premier has called the cbc's reporting defamatory and asked them to issue a retraction and an
00:05:17.920 apology the cbc is standing behind their reporting as we discussed last week and here's what you guys
00:05:23.600 had to say about it sub if you are unapologetically pro-life said anyone with even a smidge of common
00:05:28.800 sense knows government funded equates to government shell their reporting here did nothing but strengthen
00:05:34.960 this beautiful lady's support sincerely looking forward to our upcoming provincial election in may
00:05:40.960 just so i can vote for this woman al ducho 357 wrote the cbc has been a liberal laundromat for decades
00:05:48.480 not just defund but criminal charges applied i tried to find a couple comments that were in support
00:05:53.840 of the cbc but i'm sure you guys will be shocked to learn i just couldn't find any okay moving into
00:05:58.800 what we're watching in the weeks to come i think this is a really important story because it relates to
00:06:02.560 public safety in our cities across alberta and of course across canada but alberta is really the
00:06:07.760 only province that's taking serious action to address the crisis of homelessness and addiction
00:06:12.320 right now in fact the united conservative party government's first major project in their efforts
00:06:17.280 to stem this crisis is opening later this month it's the size of a football field and it's the
00:06:22.320 first of its kind in alberta it's also the first of states massive recovery communities currently being
00:06:27.760 built by the province i was able to go get a tour of it earlier this week and so we're going to show
00:06:32.080 some of that footage for you now i also spoke to marshall smith about the recovery community he is
00:06:37.200 alberta premier daniel smith's chief of staff and he's also a recovered addict of 17 years
00:06:41.760 a couple weeks ago i wrote a profile on marshall who spent four years living on vancouver streets as
00:06:46.400 a homeless drug addict if you guys haven't read that profile already you should absolutely go check
00:06:50.400 it out in the past four years marshall has been guiding the ucp's approach to homelessness and addiction
00:06:55.600 he says previous governments of all political spectrums haven't had the political will to
00:07:00.160 appropriately plan fun and build a proper system of care for those struggling but that's about to change in
00:07:06.160 alberta as the province trades what he calls decades of neglect for a breathtaking system
00:07:11.840 of care marshall told me the province hopes to build 11 in total but details on other facilities
00:07:17.440 are not yet public the facilities cost around 20 million dollars each to build and programs can
00:07:23.360 last from one month to one year depending on the client's needs and finally you guys i just wanted to
00:07:28.400 end the show on a positive note for you guys i'm sure most of you will be relieved to hear this we've
00:07:32.400 been covering the house of colvin's public safety committee for a while and the liberal government's
00:07:36.480 very last minute efforts to ban hundreds more models of semi-automatic shotguns and rifles
00:07:42.080 including those primarily used by hunters sport shooters and farmers while on friday morning after
00:07:47.440 weeks of very loud opposition from both the conservatives and the ndp the liberal government
00:07:52.640 withdrew those amendments i've no doubt that some of you will be breathing a sigh of relief your hunting
00:07:56.960 rifles are safe for now okay guys that's all i have for you today thank you so much for tuning
00:08:01.600 in don't forget to comment below and let me know what you think about hinshaw taking a job in bc
00:08:06.640 i hope that you guys have a great rest of your weekend and god bless
