In this episode, I sit down with former Prime Minister and current Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney to talk about his vision for the future of Canada. We talk about what it means to be a Western Canadian, why it's time to separate from the rest of the country, and how to move forward.

00:00:00.000 A lot of Albertans where I'm from are concerned that if Mark Carney does win, you know, I mean, it's shocking, right?
00:00:07.540 Everyone thought after 10 years of Justin Trudeau, there was no question that the Liberals were going to lose.
00:00:11.940 And if the Conservatives cannot secure a victory in this political climate now, will they ever be able to?
00:00:18.420 And if the answer to that is no, is it fair for Western Canadians to say maybe it's time to find a new, you know,
00:00:26.260 to create a new system where Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal don't determine our future.
00:00:31.640 Do you get that same sense in British Columbia?
00:00:33.860 I guess you're from the north, right?
00:00:35.840 Right, yeah.
00:00:36.260 So, I mean, I used to live in Fort St. John as well.
00:00:39.340 And they're almost Albertans, you know.
00:00:41.420 They think very similar.
00:00:42.760 Do you think that that sort of idea of Western separation,
00:00:45.880 or at least some sort of, you know, political sovereignty in some way, shape, or form,
00:00:52.020 do they share that belief with Albertans?
00:00:54.640 I think the reality is Canada has not thought of itself as a country for a very long time.
00:01:00.480 We think of ourselves as provinces.
00:01:02.340 We think of ourselves as regions.
00:01:03.940 It's been many decades since we've actually thought of ourselves as a country.
00:01:07.360 And what Trump has done has created the opportunity to start thinking bigger in terms of it.
00:01:12.920 We need to tear down the barriers between our provinces.
00:01:15.160 We need to move energy east-west.
00:01:16.980 We need to get our energy offshore to tidewater.
00:01:20.600 And we need to be able to open our minds.
00:01:21.660 we need to be rethinking our confederation we need to be looking at the authorities between
00:01:26.600 the federal and provincial governments and so i think you know if you end up with a government
00:01:31.920 in ottawa that says no screw you guys um you know we're not interested in trying to address or or
00:01:37.560 even hear about any of these issues then yeah i think alienation is going to be a big big issue
00:01:42.520 right across the country but i think there is a window to start looking about about that to think
00:01:48.140 about you know confederation and how we can see that sort of strengthening and that's something
00:01:52.140 certainly i'll be pushing for yeah where everyone fits into well i mean let's realize our full
00:01:56.900 potential our gdp growth as canada has been 0.14 on a per capita basis for 10 years yeah it's crazy
00:02:05.260 the united states grown at 1.8 percent you know 18 or more 14 times 10 times more the average in
00:02:12.040 the OECD nations is 10 times more at 14 percent. Like this has been absolutely crazy to see how
00:02:17.820 bad we have performed. And I think that's unacceptable. And part of that is not taking
00:02:22.900 advantage of our resources, not listening to the provinces like Alberta, like British
00:02:26.880 Columbia in terms of where our real potential could be. I mean, across the country, there's
00:02:31.060 all sorts of these same type of issues. But this is something that we need to really think about
00:02:35.760 in terms of what is Canada? How do we take advantage of our strengths? How do we make
00:02:40.540 sure that we have the highest standards of living and the highest health care opportunities
00:02:46.720 of any jurisdiction. We could have that because of the resources we have.
