Andrew Scheer's position on gay marriage has been a hot topic for the past 14 years, but that hasn't stopped it from being the biggest news story of the day. Is this a self-fulfilling prophecy?

00:00:00.000 This Labor Day long weekend is likely the last weekend before the red is dropped and the federal
00:00:14.500 election campaign officially gets underway. So what's it gonna look like? What's the tone
00:00:20.240 gonna be and what are the issues that are discussed? Well if the past few weeks and
00:00:24.560 months are any indication it ain't gonna be pretty in that prediction of a brass knuckles
00:00:28.680 campaign well looks like it's gonna be a self-fulfilling prophecy. We've just come
00:00:33.060 off of this several-day cycle where the big story that the must discuss the big
00:00:37.500 talker has been Andrew Scheer's position on same-sex marriage something that he
00:00:42.920 articulated 14 years ago. Now I remember the debate back then I was in support of
00:00:48.360 same-sex marriage back then and obviously still remain so so I would have
00:00:51.560 disagreed with Andrew Scheer back then had I had a vote like he had in that video
00:00:55.860 that he's talking about how he will cast his vote but it was 14 years ago
00:01:00.240 Andrew Scheer has since set the record and said look this is the law of the land
00:01:03.480 he's not looking to touch it oh and by the way a whole lot of other people held
00:01:07.240 the same view including the individual who was first trafficking in that video
00:01:11.100 and trying to get us to talk about it Ralph Goodale. Many other liberal
00:01:14.580 characters like Barack Obama also voiced those opinions and voiced them several
00:01:19.260 years after Andrew Scheer voiced them. I do not support gay marriage. Yet that hasn't
00:01:25.380 stopped this being the big issue of the day. Is this what we're going to be
00:01:30.840 dealing with here? Every day this kind of barrage of stories Andrew Scheer's a meanie
00:01:35.640 Andrew Scheer's this on gay rights issues and this on abortion issues and so
00:01:40.140 forth. I mean it really makes you pause and go what is happening here with our
00:01:44.820 political strategists and perhaps more importantly with people in the media who
00:01:49.180 are amplifying this because you know it's one thing for there to be stories
00:01:54.020 that sort of float around in social media and people say oh Scheer said this and
00:01:58.200 Justin Trudeau posted a photo with that guy and what does it all mean? It's another
00:02:01.960 thing to have people who are kind of gatekeepers of all of this in mainstream
00:02:05.880 media to decide that that's a thing that we're going to elevate to national
00:02:10.140 prominence and sort of push it push it to the fore every chance we get to say
00:02:14.800 this is big news because that's part of the odd thing that happened with the
00:02:18.400 Andrew Scheer gay marriage story. It wasn't just that liberal strategists were
00:02:22.360 cynically pulling out this old clip that we know isn't particularly relevant
00:02:26.640 anymore. I mean they're going to do that. You can't fault them for doing that.
00:02:29.880 They're looking around and they're trying to throw everything even the kitchen
00:02:32.460 sink at the guy who is their main opponent because they want to say Andrew
00:02:36.280 Scheer's a bad guy. He's got bad policies. Don't vote for him. Vote for Trudeau.
00:02:39.900 That's their job. You can't fault them for that. But those people who took that
00:02:44.260 and said, yes, this is the top story of the day, you kind of got to fault them for
00:02:49.460 that. And one wonders what sort of media bias are we going to see coming up in the
00:02:54.600 next few weeks? How balanced are things going to be? We already know in the past
00:02:58.400 few years trust in media has eroded. There's a whole bunch of different polls
00:03:01.800 out there, statistics, there's studies that show the degree to which journalists
00:03:06.360 are registered Democrats in the U.S. versus registered Republicans, academics,
00:03:11.620 professors, and so forth. And we know it's just a fact that all of these things skew
00:03:15.700 heavily left-leaning and heavily liberal. Does Andrew Scheer even stand a chance in
00:03:20.980 all of this? And will we get some semblance, some balance of fairness? Are we going to
00:03:25.960 see these two solitudes where we've got certain voices online and a few organizations out there
00:03:31.920 presenting a balanced side or another side of the story? And then we have a mainstream
00:03:35.760 side of the story which is heavily influenced by all of this liberal bias. You got to wonder
00:03:41.360 because now that there are other ways to sort of do an end run around traditional media,
00:03:45.460 the sort of stuff that Donald Trump heavily exploited via his own social media reach,
00:03:50.140 well that creates a lot of split. That creates a lot of people looking behind the curtain and going,
00:03:54.540 why do we have these two completely different dueling narratives? And it's not good. It's not healthy for,
00:04:00.300 I think, a civil society and a democracy to have these situations where there's just 180 discussions
00:04:06.560 of issues, 180 degrees coverage, which makes one side kind of lose faith and trust in the other,
00:04:12.820 which makes sort of voices on social media, certain news consumers say,
00:04:16.520 I don't really trust those online news sources. I think there's another problem if the things that
00:04:23.340 we're talking about all throughout the campaign are just innuendos and suggestions about all the evil
00:04:28.640 and villainy that Andrew Scheer is going to get up to. It takes that promise that we're going to have
00:04:33.740 a clean campaign. Remember, Justin Trudeau made that promise several times and it really shows
00:04:38.580 that nobody was sincere about it in the first place. I mean, if we want to do a completely clean
00:04:43.580 campaign here, what we do is we talk about people's policies and we talk about their records.
00:04:49.240 Now, to be fair, putting a video that Andrew Scheer said in the House of Commons, that's where he made
00:04:54.340 the comment. That is his record. It's on the public record. So by all means, bring it up and discuss
00:04:59.280 it. But let's question the kind of validity of it and how much we should be discussing it, how much
00:05:04.980 it should be amplified. I think that's the question there. Shouldn't Justin Trudeau's record, which has
00:05:10.840 happened much more frequently just in the past four years, not 14 years ago. And by the way, he is the
00:05:16.040 person in the prime minister's office who has control over many things. Andrew Scheer is just the opposition
00:05:20.840 leader right now. You know, the idea that he needs to be held account for something 14 years ago, somewhat
00:05:26.900 accurate. But isn't it true that the guy in the main seat needs to be held to account more robustly for
00:05:33.040 things he's actually done while in the governing seat just the other year, just a few months ago. But we
00:05:38.820 haven't seen too much of that calling Trudeau to account for his record, for his successes, his failures, the
00:05:45.420 promises that he's fulfilled, the promises that he's broken. And just looking at the general
00:05:49.740 platforms as well. That's kind of more fair game politics, is it not? Well, we shall see this
00:05:54.780 Labor Day long weekend, the last long weekend, the sort of calm before the storm, before regular
00:05:59.340 Canadians more start tuning in to the daily sturm and drang and all of this. And the question will be
00:06:05.160 is the tone of the campaign, not just by the politicians, but by the media covering it, will
00:06:09.740 it be such that it just sours people to the whole endeavor altogether? We shall see.
00:06:19.740 The most common factors that I oppose still most recently were created, I became a SJB.
00:06:24.160 And we can start feeling a few moments at the end of this, which to wonder that level is
00:06:28.960 making it really the most common factors that need something in which to relate to the
00:06:31.540 capacity. So udah given a plan today, we the ground conversion of prior to use that
00:06:33.960 plan. As long as I believe it,ВОGRE them to a full premium experience stuff that we can deserve, this
00:06:38.820 they will grant Investors in more than just 1,000 years, but both ways the size of the
00:06:42.260 standards are and meet with us. See.
00:06:43.780 That's that because OF what I did not require, we are seeing the chances as soon as easily as possible.
