00:00:00.120 Justin Trudeau has never met a payoff he didn't like.
00:00:03.860 The latest example, and not by any stretch the only example,
00:00:07.260 is $1.6 billion that Justin Trudeau is putting in
00:00:11.040 to save the struggling Alberta oil and gas sector.
00:00:15.120 Now, we know the oil and gas sector in that province
00:00:17.820 is losing about $40 billion worth of investment each and every year.
00:00:22.420 And what's Justin Trudeau doing? Giving them $1.6 billion.
00:00:26.580 So just a fraction of a fraction of what it is that they're actually losing.
00:00:31.480 But here's the key. That sector hasn't been asking the government for money.
00:00:35.020 The demands have been very clear and wouldn't cost taxpayers a dime.
00:00:39.180 Get out of the way and let us have that economic climate
00:00:42.160 where we can actually allow our industry to grow.
00:00:44.960 In other words, build the darn pipeline.
00:00:47.440 But it's not actually about the facts of what's going to help an industry
00:00:50.860 or what's going to help the Canadian economy as a whole.
00:00:53.300 No, Justin Trudeau is far more interested in coming up
00:00:56.280 with a big, giant, Ed McMahon-sized check
00:00:58.700 to give to these people to say,
00:01:00.620 I've got your back. I'm saving you.
00:01:02.720 When in actuality, he's doing nothing for you at all.
00:01:06.880 The oil and gas sector is one example of this.
00:01:09.040 $1.6 billion.
00:01:10.800 But you just go a few weeks back
00:01:12.320 and you see that the media industry in Canada
00:01:14.280 was given its own $600 million slush fund
00:01:17.800 that's going to be coming into effect very soon.
00:01:19.860 It is not a coincidence that all of this is coming
00:01:23.240 less than a year before an election.
00:01:26.160 Trudeau doesn't even seem to be hiding the fact
00:01:28.160 that he is buying support
00:01:29.720 in what is, in a couple of weeks, going to be an election year.
00:01:34.340 And Canadians need to see through this.
00:01:36.300 And unfortunately, industry groups
00:01:38.120 that are getting a huge chunk of change may not be able to.
00:01:41.320 Look, we've already started to see what's happening in the media,
00:01:44.280 the way that they cover the government
00:01:45.680 and the way they report on the media fund,
00:01:48.560 even though they're the ones cashing checks from it.
00:01:51.300 So what Justin Trudeau is doing here
00:01:53.260 is not helping anyone.
00:01:54.560 He's not saving jobs.
00:01:55.900 He is causing a nationwide, industry-wide dependency.
00:02:01.160 This is the welfare state at the corporate level.
00:02:04.500 And the math doesn't add up.
00:02:06.100 We know that bailouts don't work
00:02:07.400 because they offer one little bit of respite
00:02:10.500 unless they become continual.
00:02:12.340 And I fear that we may actually be looking towards
00:02:15.480 perpetual subsidies here
00:02:17.100 because there's nothing that makes these industries sustainable
00:02:20.260 in what the federal government is doing.
00:02:22.600 And the oil and gas sector is a great example.
00:02:25.040 There are lots of requests,
00:02:26.240 such as scrapping a couple of pieces of legislation
00:02:29.120 that are going to make pipelines
00:02:31.000 very difficult to be built in the future,
00:02:33.160 actually building the pipelines,
00:02:35.000 not imposing a national carbon tax,
00:02:37.320 not imposing these green energy funds
00:02:39.760 that take money away
00:02:40.940 and don't actually produce an economic benefit.
00:02:43.420 These are market-based solutions.
00:02:46.220 Just government has to say,
00:02:47.560 I'm taking our hands off it.
00:02:49.020 No one needs the government to step in here.
00:02:52.240 And we're going to see this happen a lot more.
00:02:54.200 Any industry now that's facing hardship
00:02:55.960 will look to Justin Trudeau and say,
00:02:57.980 okay, where's our billion dollars?
00:02:59.920 And you know what?
00:03:00.800 Anytime between now and next October,
00:03:03.180 he's going to respond by giving it to them.
00:03:05.440 And that's why the election can't come soon enough.
00:03:07.960 For the True North Initiative, I'm Andrew Lutton.
