00:00:00.000 So just this past week, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal began hearing its reference question case
00:00:10.440 in whether or not the federal government has the ability to impose the unpopular carbon tax
00:00:16.060 upon all of the provinces.
00:00:18.120 So you've got the Saskatchewan government hosting it,
00:00:20.480 but you've got Ontario there fighting it, and New Brunswick as well.
00:00:24.100 Their lawyers gave some of their opening arguments recently,
00:00:26.400 and the crux of the point that they're making is not so much that the carbon tax shouldn't be done,
00:00:31.820 that this isn't the right way to deal with these climate issues,
00:00:34.020 that there's way too much climate alarmism going on out there.
00:00:36.740 All those things are true, by the way.
00:00:38.280 But that doing this, and the structure that they're doing it,
00:00:42.160 puts at risk the federation, puts at risk how the provinces interact with the federal government,
00:00:48.700 and sets a precedent to say that if the feds can get away with this,
00:00:52.540 they're going to be able to get away with imposing anything on the provinces.
00:00:57.260 And I think this is a good occasion to do a little bit of a timeout in the carbon tax conversation,
00:01:01.480 because sometimes we get really bogged down in the details and the technical points
00:01:05.120 and comparing different plans.
00:01:06.700 But let's just stop and step back and look at what this whole thing is that's going on right now in court.
00:01:12.820 Justin Trudeau wants to take the provinces to court
00:01:17.460 and maybe go all the way up to the Supreme Court
00:01:20.340 to fight for his right to impose a tax on the people of Canada,
00:01:27.520 who many provinces have already voted against this tax,
00:01:30.960 on a federal election year.
00:01:34.220 Just think about that for a second.
00:01:35.800 Isn't that the craziest thing ever?
00:01:37.900 That he wants to fight for the right to add an extra tax to people
00:01:42.720 on the year that they're having an election?
00:01:45.300 I've got to tell you, when I saw Doug Ford first announce his leadership
00:01:49.680 for the Ontario PC Party,
00:01:51.580 this is when he'd gone from a private citizen to announcing the leadership
00:01:54.300 the general election hadn't even started.
00:01:56.420 He was up there speaking to everybody, and he said,
00:01:58.520 I'm going to do this, I'm going to do that,
00:02:00.100 and we're going to be for the people and everything,
00:02:01.720 and he got applause and he got cheers.
00:02:03.440 But let me tell you, I was right there in the room when it happened,
00:02:06.140 when he said,
00:02:07.260 and we're going to get rid of the carbon tax.
00:02:10.940 Thunderous cheers erupted,
00:02:12.700 the likes of which had not been heard of that day before.
00:02:15.340 Nary an event that I've been to recently in Canadian politics.
00:02:18.920 Folks, I'm not going to introduce a carbon tax.
00:02:25.460 the people who don't like this really don't like it and in june the election was part of a partly
00:02:53.360 a referendum on the carbon tax i mean it was getting kathleen win out it was getting the
00:02:57.580 government costs under control of the budget and so forth but you better believe the carbon tax
00:03:02.040 played a massive role and here's to trudeau going to the courts defiantly fighting for a right that
00:03:11.420 he thinks he has and maybe the courts are going to rule otherwise to impose this you know what i'm
00:03:17.100 going to wager that even if he wins this court battle if wow what a maneuver and he may come
00:03:24.440 to regret that he did it in the first place
