My question is regarding the settlement of refugees.
00:00:03.800
In July 2017, a child named Marissa Shen was found dead in a public park near her home
00:00:11.960
Last year, police charged with murder a 28-year-old man named Ibrahim Ali, a Syrian refugee who
00:00:18.320
had come to Canada three months before Marissa Shen was killed.
00:00:22.640
In an interview you did with Maclean's, the interviewer said, quote, a lot of people say
00:00:28.280
that if it hadn't been for the surge in Syrian refugees after the 2015 election, this guy
00:00:35.740
To which you replied, I'm not one of those people who says that.
00:00:41.000
My question is, can you guarantee that Marissa Shen was not killed by a Syrian refugee who
00:00:48.680
And if not, what in your opinion is the acceptable number of Canadian lives lost as a result of
00:00:55.900
I told you we were going to hear from a wide range of perspectives.
00:01:01.520
And I think I understand your concerns, sir, and I understand the frustration.
00:01:07.060
Violent crime and what Marissa Shen's family has gone through, what the community has gone
00:01:11.460
through, any violent crime, any violent murder is a terrible tragedy.
00:01:16.520
And we have a judicial system, we have a process through which to go there.
00:01:23.140
But the generalizations and the danger that we get in in tying things like immigration policies
00:01:32.520
to incidents like this is something that I don't entirely know is helpful or useful in a diverse,
00:01:52.140
The safety and well-being of all Canadians is at the forefront of our responsibility as a society.
00:02:03.300
And we need to do everything we can to keep all our children safe.
00:02:07.300
But to set up a false dichotomy that says, well, part of everything we need to do to keep Canadians safe is
00:02:18.460
to keep people from a way out of this country is simply not the way we are as Canadians.
00:02:34.440
And it is not how we are going to build a brighter future.
00:02:38.520
We benefit when people come from other parts of this world and bring their stories, bring
00:02:43.360
their hard work, bring their hopes to build a better future for their kids and grandkids
00:02:50.200
That is what has contributed so much to our success over these past centuries.
00:02:58.480
And at the time where the world is hardening in its hearts to immigration and not seeing
00:03:05.320
the economic benefits of welcoming in people who are looking for nothing more than the opportunity
00:03:11.800
to work hard and build a better future for themselves and their kids, I think there is an extraordinary
00:03:16.560
opportunity for Canada and we have actually seen it over these past years with initiatives
00:03:22.280
we have had on the Global Skills Strategy which allows people to come to Canada to work and
00:03:30.400
There have been extraordinarily positive examples and on the issue of Syrian refugees.
00:03:35.720
I have to say the fact that Canada and Canadians opened up our hearts and our homes and our
00:03:44.000
communities right across the country to welcome 40,000 people who were fleeing for their lives
00:03:49.540
from a country devastated by civil war that have contributed in so many ways to making this
00:03:56.060
country a better place is something that I think we all can be proud of, we all can be grateful
00:04:01.500
of the generosity of the many church groups, community groups, families who opened up their hearts
00:04:07.640
and homes to welcoming people who were fleeing for their lives and wanted nothing more than
00:04:12.260
to contribute to a better country and that's something we should all be proud of.
