00:00:00.000 Hey, guys, I want to talk to you today about Karen Wang, that Liberal candidate for Burnaby
00:00:07.540 South facing off in the by-election against Jagmeet Singh.
00:00:10.240 Now, I know you're kind of thinking, Liberal candidate, isn't she the former Liberal candidate?
00:00:15.480 But I'm taking a bit of a pause here, a bit of a timeout on all of it, because even when
00:00:19.120 the story first broke, I thought, I'm unclear what the big deal is here.
00:00:23.760 I mean, I'm not getting a bee in my bonnet over this, not because one shouldn't be campaigning
00:00:28.480 that way, but because I've thought for years that the massive ethnic pandering that we do
00:00:34.040 in this country is too much, that it shouldn't be done, it has to stop, but no one seemed
00:00:38.300 to agree with me, so I thought, all right, I guess this is the new normal.
00:00:42.380 What's different now?
00:00:44.680 Why suddenly all the fuss?
00:00:46.500 I guess because she got caught.
00:00:48.440 I guess because she didn't just say, vote for me because I'm the only Chinese candidate.
00:00:52.740 She said, don't vote for this person, or imply don't vote for him because of his ethnicity.
00:00:57.640 Is it also partially because this was a case of two different non-white candidates up against
00:01:03.240 each other, and it's a little different when one of the candidates is seen to have a male
00:01:07.740 privilege or a white privilege.
00:01:10.100 And this isn't just me making a hypothetical.
00:01:12.920 I read some old stories from 2014 about when high-profile NDP or Olivia Chow ran to be mayor
00:01:19.180 of Toronto, and I found a number of stories out there in major papers, National Post and other
00:01:24.200 outlets talking about her campaign and how the Chinese community was rallying behind
00:01:28.200 her, and they were saying, we are supporting her because we want to see the first Chinese 0.99
00:01:33.200 woman be mayor of a major city, things like that. 1.00
00:01:35.920 And they weren't even saying they agreed with her NDP values.
00:01:39.260 Olivia Chow herself at one point, at one big campaign event, at one big debate during the
00:01:45.840 election, she said, well, one reason I differentiate myself, I'm not male and I'm not white.
00:01:51.380 And I think a few people criticized her for that, but it wasn't really the end of the
00:01:56.340 game.
00:01:57.620 She continued with the campaign, and she went through it relatively unscathed, placed a pretty
00:02:01.740 poor third, but still.
00:02:03.940 This stuff, to a different degree, to varying degrees, is happening all the time in Canada.
00:02:09.320 Candace Malcolm wrote that this is just the inevitable outcome of Trudeau's post-national
00:02:13.720 state.
00:02:14.540 This encouragement that there is no unifying core Canadian identity going on, encouraging people 0.99
00:02:19.900 to think of themselves as, you know, ethnic ghettoization and so forth.
00:02:24.520 And Candace is right.
00:02:25.980 I don't think it's healthy, what Karen Wang was saying and doing.
00:02:29.060 I don't think that's the way we should think about each other in this society.
00:02:32.960 It should be civics first.
00:02:34.140 It should be Canadian citizens.
00:02:35.580 It should be taxpayers.
00:02:36.700 All these things that unify us and rally us together.
00:02:39.980 Well, we're going to have to have a conversation in this country, because it's been happening for
00:02:44.440 a long time, all of the political parties in this country have been exploiting it, and
00:02:49.000 maybe finally, it's about to change.
00:02:51.880 What do you think?
