00:05:30.000 Thank you.
00:06:00.000 .
00:06:30.000 British Columbia is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
00:06:38.000 It is a land of extraordinary beauty where lush forests meet the Pacific,
00:06:43.000 snow-capped mountains pierce the sky, rolling vineyards,
00:06:47.000 and vast wilderness stretch across a landscape of breathtaking contrasts.
00:06:53.000 Blessed with magnificent natural resources, vibrant communities,
00:06:58.000 in boundless attractions, BC has every reason to be proud of its inheritance. And its people
00:07:05.700 should have every opportunity to build a future worthy of the place itself. But for many British
00:07:12.640 Columbians, the question tonight isn't how great BC's potential is, but whether their government
00:07:19.380 is doing enough to realize what it could be. Tonight, voters are deciding who gets to lead
00:07:26.140 the province and what direction BC takes from here.
00:07:30.580 David Eby and the NDP are looking to secure a stronger mandate two years earlier than
00:07:36.700 planned.
00:07:38.040 And on the other side, the BC Conservatives, led by Lorne Dirksen, are hoping to turn voter
00:07:44.400 frustration into a historic political upset that will reshape the province.
00:07:50.860 And no matter who you are, there's a lot on the line.
00:07:55.320 For families struggling with the cost of living, housing and affordability remain their top
00:07:59.960 concerns.
00:08:01.420 For communities dealing with street disorder, addiction and public safety issues, the question
00:08:07.400 is whether the government's approach is working or whether it's actually the source of the
00:08:12.360 crisis.
00:08:13.360 And for property owners and businesses, the controversy surrounding the Declaration on
00:08:18.560 the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, or DRIPA, has raised serious concerns about property
00:08:25.360 rights and legal certainty.
00:08:27.360 Then, of course, there's the province's debt and economic management, the pressure
00:08:33.560 on local communities, and the broader question of whether nine years of NDP government have
00:08:39.820 delivered the results that British Columbians were promised.
00:08:43.160 E.B. has framed this election as a chance to strengthen B.C.'s position against U.S. President Donald Trump and his tariffs,
00:08:52.160 while critics have questioned why he called an election two years ahead of schedule
00:08:57.140 and whether the timing is more about his political interests than it is the province's.
00:09:03.660 Tonight, it's not just a question of who wins. It's a question of what voters want B.C. to become
00:09:10.680 and whether they believe the government that got them here
00:09:14.680 should be the one to take them into the future.
00:09:18.500 Welcome to the Juneau News BC Election Night Broadcast.
00:09:22.660 Stay tuned to keep track of who's in the lead, what's at stake,
00:09:27.400 and to hear from everyone in the know.
00:09:40.680 Welcome to Juneau News' live election coverage of the British Columbia general election.
00:09:54.060 I'm Kian Bextie alongside my co-host Harrison Faulkner and, of course, Member of Parliament
00:09:59.600 Aaron Gunn, coming to you live from Vancouver from the Conservative Party of British Columbia's
00:10:05.260 election night party.
00:10:06.580 Tonight, you do not need to go anywhere else.
00:10:09.560 We have the maps, we have the projections, we have the live seat counts, and we have the interviews, the speeches, everything you would want we have right here broadcasting right alongside our friends here in the B.C. Conservative Party election night room.
00:10:23.880 We'll take you through the races that matter, we'll speak to the people behind the campaigns, and bring you results as British Columbians choose their next government.
00:10:33.320 But first, if you are a registered B.C. voter and you haven't yet cast your ballot,
00:10:38.220 be sure to get in line, get your ID, get yourself to the nearest polling station,
00:10:42.520 get in line before polls close at 8 o'clock Pacific time.
00:10:46.160 You still have time to vote if you're in line.
00:10:48.920 We'll be here with you, take us with you on your phone,
00:10:51.680 but just get in line and make sure you cast that ballot.
00:10:54.200 This has been an extraordinary road to election night, gentlemen.
00:10:57.280 Well, when Juneau News hosted the B.C. conservative leadership debate
00:11:01.600 A few months ago, back in April, we told you that the next premier, it was actually moderated by you,
00:11:07.060 we said the next premier was going to be on that stage, and boy, were we ever wrong.
00:11:12.520 I thought Albertan politics were crazy, but British Columbian politics have really taken us for a loop.
00:11:18.280 Carrie Lynn Finley won that leadership race by a razor-thin margin,
00:11:22.020 and then came some defections and an internal revolt,
00:11:25.240 and what I call a coup really from the party's centrist wing
00:11:30.540 against the leader that its memberships just elected.
00:11:34.300 And now, after Carolyn Finley resigned, we have Lorne Dirksen running the party,
00:11:40.600 which Lorne Dirksen has turned out to actually be like a pretty competent Scott Moe-type figure,
00:11:46.200 a really steady hand when David Eby was hoping that it was going to be a disaster.
00:11:51.240 He was hoping to capitalize on the disarray that he saw the Conservative Party in.
00:11:56.040 And really, I think we're going to see tonight if that backfired on him completely.
00:12:00.420 Tonight, we're going to find out whether that gamble pays off
00:12:03.080 or whether or not British Columbians are going to give him another opportunity to run this province.
00:12:07.740 And once polls close, we'll be following this election seat by seat.
00:12:11.480 We'll tell you who's leading, who has won, which races remain too close to call.
00:12:15.900 There are 93 seats in the legislature.
00:12:17.680 47 is the number you are going to be watching out for.
00:12:20.860 That is the number for a majority.
00:12:23.600 And the Juneau News Decision Desk will call the election as soon as it has the evidence and the confidence to make that call.
00:12:30.120 Every number on tonight's map represents a community and people making decisions about the cost of living, the safety of their streets, their health care and their future.
00:12:41.180 So that's the story that we're here to tell.
00:12:43.920 We're here alongside a lot of mainstream media.
00:12:47.120 We are the only independent newsroom here on a riser in the room where the next premier could be elected here soon in the next couple hours.
00:12:56.540 So my request to you is that you share this stream with your friends, this broadcast, whether it's on YouTube, Rumble, Twitter, wherever you are.
00:13:05.900 Whoever might want to see what is going on in British Columbia, please share this as far and wide as you can so that we can actually share the news as it's happening.
00:13:16.160 but also, most importantly, not leave it to people who are in the bailout media to tell us what to think.
00:13:21.720 So, without further ado, I want to get into our coverage of tonight
00:13:25.080 and talk with Aaron, Member of Parliament Aaron Gunn, about what you saw on the campaign trail.
00:13:30.360 Obviously, your job is in Ottawa, but you've been here a lot of the time.
00:13:34.400 Yeah, well, we had some riding weeks or break weeks here in the last month,
00:13:39.380 but it's been very interesting to watch, Kean,
00:13:42.240 because I think what you've seen over the course of the campaign,
00:13:46.160 is the momentum of the B.C. Conservative Party really beginning to take hold.
00:13:49.960 And what obviously started for Mr. Eby is what he viewed as a political opportunity
00:13:54.740 to consolidate his own political power
00:13:57.020 has somewhat ironically turned into an opportunity for British Columbians
00:14:01.140 to end the NDP's disastrous policies two years ahead of schedule.
00:14:05.600 So I think most Conservatives are feeling optimistic.
00:14:08.820 Nothing is guaranteed.
00:14:10.440 I think there's still a potential for a very close race,
00:14:13.420 But we're going to, of course, as they say, the only poll that matters is on election night, right?
00:14:17.240 So let's find out what's going to happen.
00:14:18.800 It is, I just cannot, and everyone remarks to me about what was happening in April when you were moderating that debate.
00:14:24.600 And like the butterfly effect of what happened because that debate occurred.
00:14:29.880 Can you walk us through what happened actually even from before that debate,
00:14:33.900 from John Rustad running this party in the last election to now,
00:14:37.460 can you just walk the average viewer through what is going on
00:14:41.540 And why is Lorne Dirksen the leader of this party?
00:14:44.700 And has it benefited him that he's kind of like broadly unknown by most people?
00:14:50.160 Yeah, well, I think so.
00:14:51.360 There's a lot of history to cover.
00:14:53.120 What year is it again?
00:14:54.260 So I think it's less than a year ago.
00:14:58.260 I don't have my timeline in front of me, but I think less than a year ago,
00:15:01.060 John Rustad was still leader of the Conservative Party at BC this time last year.
00:15:05.260 Is that correct, I think?
00:15:06.100 Yeah, it was December.
00:15:06.840 So essentially there was a caucus revolt.
00:15:10.380 I think it was around December last year, a majority of caucus signed a letter to remove John.
00:15:16.040 It led to some, there was a brief moment there where no one knew who exactly the leader was,
00:15:20.240 but eventually John officially stepped aside.
00:15:22.500 It kicked off a leadership race.
00:15:24.220 We had five contenders who officially stepped forward.
00:15:27.640 Juno News held the, was it the first debate?
00:15:29.720 Yeah.
00:15:30.380 It was much talked about and tons of, how many views did you get on that debate?
00:15:34.940 Oh, a count, I wouldn't even know.
00:15:36.720 It was more views than any other debate by a long shot.
00:15:40.380 And so what happened is two candidates obviously didn't show up, Peter Milibar and Caroline Elliott.
00:15:46.240 I think most people who were following the campaign believe that to have been a mistake by the Elliott campaign that probably cost her the leadership.
00:15:55.420 Carolyn Finley won by a tight margin.
00:15:57.720 I think she made some mistakes in the early days, starting with the fact that her husband, who was a sitting MLA, didn't step aside for an immediate by-election.
00:16:05.120 So she took her time to get into the legislature.
00:16:07.560 There were some questionable, I think, staffing picks.
00:16:10.760 It led to another series of defections from the party,
00:16:16.280 people that went and sat as independents that they were going to join another party.
00:16:19.520 Anyways, it all culminated, again, in Carrie Lynn Finley resigning,
00:16:23.100 and then Lorne Dirksen being thrown in as the interim leader.
00:16:25.880 He wasn't slated to find the election, but then the NDP pulled the plug
00:16:29.620 48 hours after Lorne had accepted the role of interim leader.
00:16:33.760 And the one thing that I think is important to remind people
00:16:36.100 is that within the caucus, you had all of these factions.
00:16:39.000 You had the pro-KLF faction, you had the anti-KLF faction,
00:16:42.420 and yet, in that moment, after she resigned,
00:16:46.480 they all came together to basically implore Lorne,
00:16:49.520 who never wanted the job, who never ran for the leadership,
00:16:52.020 who never indicated that he wanted it,
00:16:53.860 to, can you step forward?
00:16:55.040 We all believe that you have the experience,
00:16:58.480 kind of the fortitude, and that common-sense conservatism
00:17:02.880 to carry this party through an election.
00:17:04.160 So he found out about this while he was in a layover coming back from a family vacation.
00:17:07.940 I heard that.
00:17:08.580 It's amazing.
00:17:09.280 As you've heard.
00:17:10.180 And next thing you know, he's interim leader.
00:17:11.420 Next thing you know, after that, he's right into a general election campaign.
00:17:14.740 And I would say, for the most part, has run a pretty error-free campaign for someone that never wanted the job.
00:17:20.000 I want to talk to you about just the party itself.
00:17:23.380 The fact that we are potentially looking at history here.
00:17:26.420 The Conservative Party has not led British Columbia since 1933.
00:17:31.440 There's a real possibility.
00:17:32.480 You look at PolyWave today, that's where it's pointing to right now.
00:17:36.260 You were heavily involved in resurrecting this party from its ashes.
00:17:41.060 I think our audience would be curious to know,
00:17:43.000 what was the B.C. Conservative Party like when you decided to get involved early
00:17:48.060 and try to revive this party into what it is now,
00:17:51.260 which is on the doorstep of forming government?
00:17:53.940 Yeah, no, if Lorne Dirksen is elected tonight,
00:17:56.300 he will be the first elected Conservative Premier in 98 years,
00:18:00.060 just to put it into perspective for people.
00:18:01.860 And if you go back to 2022, this was in the aftermath of me being kicked out of the BC Liberal leadership race.
00:18:08.820 Me and a handful of individuals, we went and basically, some say took over the party,
00:18:15.440 but basically were elected to a majority of the board seats.
00:18:18.840 At the time, the BC Conservative Party was basically being run out of somebody's garage.
00:18:23.320 Some good people there, but it was not really a serious party.
00:18:26.740 And we very quickly gave it a new brand, a new platform.
00:18:31.260 I think a new set of urgency. We started getting over double digits in by-elections.
00:18:37.420 And then John Rustad, of course, crossed the floor to become our first MLA in the legislature.
00:18:42.840 And the rest is kind of history.
00:18:45.060 It's remarkable. And so talk to us just about who Lorne Dirksen is.
00:18:50.760 I mean, as you pointed out, he found out that he was going to be tapped as interim leader on an airplane.
00:18:57.420 He has run, I think, as anyone could argue, a very error-free campaign, a very smooth campaign.
00:19:04.740 But who is this guy who essentially seems to be the most improbable potential premier?
00:19:11.600 Yeah, for anyone who watches Game of Thrones, I'm calling him like the Jon Snow of B.C. politics.
00:19:16.660 He didn't want the job, and here he has found himself into it.
00:19:20.400 But he's, you know, as best I can tell, he's from rural BC, and he's just one of these common-sense conservatives.
00:19:29.240 Didn't aspire for great political power, great political ambition.
00:19:34.240 He's really a guy that you want to talk about, you know, the old political test of who you would like to have a beer with,
00:19:39.100 if you remember back in the Bush-Gore election.
00:19:41.960 And he certainly fits that profile, just a good all-around guy, common-sense conservative.
00:19:46.180 He knows the issues.
00:19:47.000 He's certainly not a Liberal, and I'm very excited to see how he leads the Conservative Party as Premier, hopefully, after tonight.
00:19:56.260 Right. So one of the things that has, I think, been pretty absent in this campaign,
00:20:02.220 although when they are in government, if they do win, will be one of the most important issues that they have to deal with,
00:20:08.980 is the indigenous land claim issue that has plagued this province for decades and decades and decades
00:20:17.800 and has really reared its head recently.
00:20:20.400 I'm wondering from you, who lives in this province, represents this province,
00:20:24.040 how do they tackle that in a way that doesn't cause more defections within their party?
00:20:29.580 They have members of their caucus that are indigenous and that have supported DRIPA and voted for DRIPA.
00:20:36.860 So how is Lorne going to be able to navigate that? 0.99
00:20:39.080 Do you think that they're going to actually be able to successfully repeal or replace or change, update it?
00:20:43.640 What's your take on this issue that's going to be the biggest one?
00:20:46.000 Yeah, it's going to be one of the core issues and one of the key litmus tests
00:20:50.960 should Lorne become premier here in a matter of hours.
00:20:55.440 And look, I think for one thing, I'm hoping that the Conservatives don't just win tonight, they win big.
00:20:59.940 So he has a healthy majority to work with so no one can hold the government hostage.
00:21:05.200 But the other thing is I think he came out during the debate and during the course of the campaign
00:21:10.820 and was explicit that DRIPA needed to be repealed and these issues needed to be resolved.
00:21:15.940 And so he has set the bar high and everyone in caucus went along with it during the campaign.
00:21:22.480 So I think they're somewhat obligated to toe that line and fulfill the promise that he made on behalf of the party to British Columbians.
00:21:28.840 And just on another note, he represents an area around Williams Lake that has been the center of some of these Aboriginal land claim issues that has been detrimental to forestry, to mining, to our entire resource sector.
00:21:40.840 So he knows these issues well.
00:21:42.200 If you ever watch him during the debate or in media, when he really gets going, it's when he's talking about the resource economy, rural communities, forestry, these kinds of things.
00:21:52.780 I remember during the general election debate, Eby tried to catch him off guard with his comment about a mining, some kind of mining project that was in his riding, and he immediately snapped back because he knew the details and David Eby didn't.
00:22:07.240 So, yeah, I think it's an issue that he knows well, and I'm confident that he's going to be following through on his promises that he made during the election.
00:22:18.700 It's always great, no matter which province you're in, when the leader comes from the rural areas of the riding,
00:22:26.960 you know that they have their head on their shoulders a little bit more than these downtown Vancouver rides.
00:22:31.920 And one thing I've noticed while I'm here is that the entire campaign has been centered around the Vancouver area.
00:22:37.900 Unlike most other provinces where campaigns have planes and tour buses, no campaign here had a tour bus.
00:22:45.200 No campaign had a plane.
00:22:46.660 It was rare that they were leaving the downtown area here, the metropolitan area.
00:22:50.940 And I'm wondering if that affects their campaigns at all,
00:22:54.340 whether it's made it difficult to communicate with the issues.
00:22:57.200 Or people out in Fort St. John, do they feel a little abandoned by these campaigns?
00:23:01.420 Well, I was running almost a makeshift secondary tour,
00:23:04.040 so I was able to visit all sorts of communities on behalf of Warren,
00:23:07.800 be it Salmon Arm, Preston, Castlegar, Cranbrook, Smithers.
00:23:11.240 So I was able to get around the province to try to spread that conservative message.
00:23:14.600 Look, a big part of it was the fact that David Eby called this election out of nowhere two years early.
00:23:20.740 Campaigns and parties weren't ready.
00:23:22.120 Lorne had just become leader like 48 hours previously,
00:23:24.720 so they didn't really have the time to put a lot of that infrastructure into place to visit everywhere.
00:23:29.840 And then, of course, the other part of that is in most elections,
00:23:32.280 a lot of the swing ridings are in Richmond, in Surrey, in the Fraser Valley,
00:23:36.360 a couple here in Vancouver, but not too many.
00:23:38.540 You did see the campaigns get out to the island a couple of times,
00:23:42.520 A couple trips into the Okanagan, but you're right.
00:23:45.220 I don't think there was much attention, unfortunately, paid to the north or the Kootenays.
00:23:50.140 But, you know, in a lot of cases, the politicians will go where the votes are.
00:23:53.880 So I think that's all that you were seeing.
00:23:55.300 I guess it's easy to blame David Eby, but maybe his own constituents will be doing the same thing.
00:23:59.960 I hear that the last day of the tour, and people say tour doesn't lie.
00:24:04.940 The Conservative Party tour was campaigning in the Premier's own riding in West Point Grey.
00:24:10.260 Is that what it's called?
00:24:11.000 Vancouver Point Grey, the famous Point Grey, is that actually up for grabs?
00:24:18.720 Well, I sure hope so.
00:24:19.500 I mean, I would love nothing more than to watch this early election call blow up in David Eby's face.
00:24:25.320 I think he's been a horrible premier over the last four years.
00:24:28.140 I think he's set B.C. behind by a decade or more.
00:24:32.560 This is a government, remember, that inherited a balanced budget.
00:24:35.300 They're now running the largest deficit in British Columbia's history.
00:24:39.320 They've increased, they've out-of-control spending, bureaucracy, and waste.
00:24:43.540 They've led to an education system that isn't focusing anymore on excellence 0.98
00:24:48.380 and reading, writing, and math, but pushing radical gender ideology, 0.99
00:24:51.520 making us hate, trying to indoctrinate the next generation. 0.88
00:24:55.460 So I think we have a chance here to get back to common sense.
00:24:59.140 And, of course, they say, as in politics, no defeat is permanent and no victory is everlasting.
00:25:04.020 So even if we're successful tonight, we're still going to have to fight for these ideas,
00:25:07.160 for these principles and these beliefs, but I'm feeling optimistic,
00:25:11.080 and I think British Columbians are ready for a change.
00:25:13.560 Well, let's just give the audience a sense of what polling is indicating.
00:25:17.300 So the prediction markets are showing upwards of 90% likelihood for the Conservatives to win.
00:25:23.620 Polling has consistently shown Conservatives pushing into the mid to high 50s in the seat count.
00:25:30.080 And it seems that that is at least where the polling is going.
00:25:33.740 but what about individual seats are you what what kind of writings are you looking at tonight i i
00:25:40.820 also i want to talk about this yale town riding because i mean as an outsider's perspective i
00:25:46.200 look at that and go okay that's a deep urban riding it it presents itself to me as though
00:25:52.520 it would be the safest ndpc possible but yet polling is showing that the conservatives have
00:25:57.960 a chance to win that seat you were in you were knocking on doors there talk was about just
00:26:02.020 Obviously, the ridings you're watching, but also give us some insight into how the Conservatives might actually win a really urban downtown Vancouver seat tonight.
00:26:10.140 Yeah, well, if they win big, they might be winning everywhere.
00:26:12.700 But Vancouver, Yaletown, I think the Conservatives lost it maybe by 6% or 7% last time.
00:26:19.280 I'd have to look at the federal overlay maps.
00:26:22.520 I feel that that is less of a NDP area and more of a federal liberal area.
00:26:27.540 And that will be one of the questions tonight is where do those federal liberals end up going?
00:26:31.040 Do they park their vote?
00:26:32.240 Traditionally, last time, maybe 75%, 80% of them voted NDP.
00:26:36.620 Do some of them come over and vote Conservative this time?
00:26:38.960 So that'll be a riding to watch.
00:26:40.600 I think the other big riding is to watch Kelowna Centre. 0.99
00:26:43.580 That's going to be one where the Conservative candidate, Christina Lowen,
00:26:46.820 won by, I think, around 100 votes last time. 0.99
00:26:49.320 On the island, it'll be very interesting to watch Wanda Fuca Malahat.
00:26:53.120 This is a riding that Conservatives, again, they lost by,
00:26:56.960 this time they lost by about 100 votes.
00:26:58.760 It also has a 1BC candidate, so you have the potential for a vote split.
00:27:02.540 So where are they going to make those breakthroughs?
00:27:04.260 And then where the money is, where the big seat numbers is in Surrey,
00:27:08.260 where you have six or seven seats up for grabs,
00:27:10.480 that's probably where the election will be decided.
00:27:13.360 But the one cool thing about British Columbia is no matter where you look,
00:27:17.000 you've got swing ridings.
00:27:17.920 You have it in the Kootenays and Kootenays Centre, Kelowna Centre.
00:27:21.820 You have it in Vernon-Lumby, Penticton-Summerland.
00:27:24.760 You have it in the Surrey's.
00:27:25.740 You have it in Richmond-Steveston, Vancouver-Yale town, as you pointed out,
00:27:30.400 and then Courtney Comox, Wanda Fuqua-Malahat, and the Couchon Valley on Vancouver Island.
00:27:34.460 So are there going to be a couple of ridings, particularly in Surrey, as there were in the last election,
00:27:39.460 where there were recounts, I believe, when Surrey-Guildford was decided by under 25 votes?
00:27:46.420 Are we headed in that direction again tonight, you think?
00:27:50.140 Yeah, because, so, I mean, it's one good thing to fill your viewers in on,
00:27:54.720 and this is to the best of my knowledge.
00:27:58.340 So first of all, we're expecting the advance votes
00:28:00.960 to all be counted by tabulator
00:28:02.720 and to come in quite quickly.
00:28:04.080 So you will probably get 40 or 50% of the votes
00:28:07.300 that come in very fast.
00:28:08.720 Right on.
00:28:09.240 Now that can be misleading
00:28:10.480 because who votes in advance
00:28:12.240 aren't necessarily the same people
00:28:13.900 that vote on election day.
00:28:15.100 They tend to skew older.
00:28:16.920 Sometimes in this last federal election,
00:28:18.720 they skewed federal liberal.
00:28:20.080 So we'll see what happens.
00:28:21.460 Then they are going to,
00:28:22.340 because they don't have enough tabulators,
00:28:23.640 to count by hand all of the ballots cast on election day.
00:28:28.180 So that will obviously stretch over the course of the night.
00:28:30.840 And then what Elections BC has said is any ballot,
00:28:33.960 any mail-in ballot or potentially absentee ballot,
00:28:37.080 and don't hold me to that, are going to be counted up until November 5th.
00:28:41.120 So if there are ridings that are within 200, 300 votes,
00:28:45.620 we're probably not going to know the result for upwards of a week.
00:28:48.800 Well, just last election there was a riding that was won by only like 40.
00:28:53.640 votes yeah and the conservative party what i what blew my mind was that the conservative party
00:28:57.660 didn't contest that in court um it was at a kind of a volatile moment in politics where i think
00:29:02.640 that they were concerned they would look like election deniers which was a big dangerous donald
00:29:07.300 trumpian thing to be at the time um but you know if there's a riding that's within 20 votes do you
00:29:12.860 think that do you think that they should contest that or should they just swallow yeah well they
00:29:17.360 should well to be honest uh federally there was a seat that was decided by one vote and i believe
00:29:22.980 The Bloc Quebec Bloc contested it, and there was a by-election, and they redid it.
00:29:31.100 So, look, one thing is even if the Conservatives win by 10 seats or the NDP win by 10 seats,
00:29:35.500 there will be some ridings that are decided by less than 100 votes.
00:29:38.460 That is pretty much guaranteed, and I feel bad for those candidates,
00:29:43.120 and hopefully the entire result of the election doesn't hinge on just one or two seats that come down.
00:29:48.980 And I will say Elections BC, I'm hoping they do better this time.
00:29:52.880 Last election, they lost a ballot box.
00:29:54.860 There were these issues in Surrey.
00:29:57.220 My experience was Elections Canada did a much more professional job.
00:30:01.800 So I want to walk viewers through how tonight is going to work.
00:30:06.020 Like I said earlier, we're broadcasting on Rumble YouTube, Twitter.
00:30:08.860 If you're watching on YouTube, you can leave a super chat.
00:30:13.200 That's how you can support our journalism right away here.
00:30:16.280 And we'll hopefully be able to read some of your comments.
00:30:18.980 either on our screen or out loud if it's if it's helpful commentary and then on the bottom of your
00:30:25.460 screen now you can see the seat counts as election results start rolling in potentially in 30 minutes
00:30:31.060 here those seat counts are going to automatically update we're powered today proud to partner with
00:30:37.300 poli wave our friend ray is in the back working with our decision desk to decide which seats are
00:30:44.020 safe to call which seats are close and we need to watch throughout the night and whether or not we
00:30:48.900 We can call effectively and without a doubt who will become the next premier of this province and what the next party will be.
00:30:57.060 It's important just for the viewers as well to know what you're going to get on this broadcast is exactly what you would find anywhere else.
00:31:05.520 You can support independent media and make sure that you're not going to miss a thing.
00:31:11.760 So that's what we're doing tonight.
00:31:14.300 Aaron, what would happen?
00:31:16.740 Before we go to Aaron, quickly.
00:31:17.780 I want to have a word from our sponsor.
00:31:21.340 Our sponsor today is unsmoked.ca,
00:31:24.560 and they have a message for all the viewers who have tuned in to our pre-show here tonight.
00:31:28.860 Let's go to that.
00:31:32.020 Oh, our producer is saying it will take a couple minutes to pull that up.
00:31:35.980 Aaron, can you tell us anything while we wait for 30 seconds for our producer to pull something up?
00:31:42.580 Well, I can just say that there is, I just want to reiterate something that Harrison was alluding to.
00:31:47.780 If Lorne is elected, he will be the first Conservative Premier in 98 years.
00:31:51.660 But this is also, I don't think you can overstate what a remarkable journey this has been for this party.
00:31:56.060 This is a party that notionally did not even exist five years ago.
00:32:00.840 It was not a serious contender.
00:32:02.900 It has emerged, it has risen from the ashes, as I like to say, and it has the potential to make history.
00:32:09.000 And I believe that the election of a Conservative government here in British Columbia
00:32:12.780 could change the long-term political dynamics right across this country,
00:32:17.140 especially when you combine it with the fact that for the first time in about a hundred years as
00:32:21.460 well we've had conservatives that won seats in the last Quebec election just a couple weeks ago.
00:32:26.320 I want to get your thoughts on what this means for the federal conservative party for the broader
00:32:30.540 conservative movement in the country. Producers Now is saying that we're ready to roll on our
00:32:35.080 first sponsored ad. Canada can go smoke-free but today access to regulated smoke-free alternatives
00:32:42.220 and information can vary depending on where someone lives. Different provincial rules create
00:32:47.320 confusion and leave openings for illicit products. When regulations don't work together, illegal
00:32:52.480 markets exploit the gaps. A coherent national framework can make expectations clearer and help
00:32:58.540 enforcement focus on compliance, underage access, and illegal trade. Patchwork doesn't work. Learn
00:33:04.860 more at unsmoke.ca. And we are back. We'll be hearing from our sponsors throughout the night.
00:33:11.500 and boy are we grateful for them we don't take a dime from the federal government unlike literally
00:33:17.720 every other media outlet that is sitting beside us they are all funded by the federal government
00:33:21.780 they're funded by your taxpayer dollars and we're not so we're really thrilled to have partners who
00:33:27.320 support our work whether it's polymarket or unsmoke and the people that support juno news
00:33:32.140 like you who donate and subscribe we are we are just absolutely thrilled that we are able to do
00:33:38.900 the work that we do without having to take money from the government and I
00:33:41.540 say this all the time to Harrison and to Candace my partner that we would we
00:33:46.760 would close down before we took money from the federal government it just it
00:33:49.700 fully corrupts your ability to be honest about what you're saying it changes your
00:33:54.680 headlines it changes your content and even if it's the the perspective the
00:34:01.040 the assumption that you might be biased on something whether it comes to
00:34:04.280 unseating the Carney government or not it's a conflict of interest totally
00:34:08.220 fundamentally so I want to talk to you about federal politics a little bit while we wait here
00:34:11.940 for polls to close what does this mean if Lauren Dirksen becomes the next premier of this province
00:34:16.080 does it make Pierre's Pierre Polyev's job easier more difficult what's he thinking in Ottawa right
00:34:22.100 now well I think look Pierre is somebody that obviously I've got to know being a member of the
00:34:28.340 caucus he's a very he's a principled conservative so you know principled conservatives tend to cheer
00:34:33.300 on principled Conservatives right across the country, no matter the kind of exterior circumstances.
00:34:39.720 So I'm someone that believes that a rightward ship for the province of British Columbia
00:34:44.640 bodes well.
00:34:45.620 It means that the Conservative brand is alive and well out here in British Columbia.
00:34:50.500 I think for Canada to thrive as a country, we need British Columbia to get back on track.
00:34:55.760 And, you know, I still think that the main issue right now federally is that Mark Carney
00:34:59.980 is still in this little bit of a honeymoon phase where in some cases he's saying things that people
00:35:04.220 can get behind but the results aren't matching up and there needs to be more time for people to
00:35:08.720 realize the rhetoric doesn't match the results and meanwhile getting a conservative premier out in
00:35:14.120 bc that by the way is going to be able to work with danielle smith and is going to be able to
00:35:17.820 work with scott moe in saskatchewan to really pressure the carny government and turn up the
00:35:22.180 temperature to make sure we get things built in this country again my understanding is that
00:35:27.660 The provincial leaders are absolutely thrilled that this is happening in B.C., that there's an opportunity for change.
00:35:33.580 If it happens.
00:35:34.200 If it happens, we shouldn't say that it's absolutely going to happen.
00:35:38.260 But the thing with David Eby is he's like one of the last vestiges of the Trudeau-era regime, right?
00:35:45.740 There's not many premiers left in this country that were governing during that time.
00:35:50.360 I guess Doug Ford was.
00:35:52.660 I tend to try to not think about him very much.
00:35:54.920 But in the West, certainly, David Eby was one of the last.
00:35:57.500 And the COVID-era policy of David Eby was some of the most, and Bonnie Henry, was some of the most disastrous in this country.
00:36:05.200 And he was Justin Trudeau's cheerleader.
00:36:08.680 Oh, it's, I mean, I don't even know where to begin.
00:36:11.660 You talk about, first of all, this is the guy that basically came up with this decision, this experiment to decriminalize hard drugs, including fentanyl, crystal meth, crack cocaine.
00:36:21.680 He flooded the streets with opioids while marketing it to our young people, Safe Supply.
00:36:25.840 They took a budget surplus, transformed into the largest deficit in our history.
00:36:30.720 This whole DRIPA issue, the refusal to grant forestry or mining permits to any company
00:36:37.900 if they didn't get the sign-off of every single First Nation band in the area, crippled those industries.
00:36:44.420 The list goes on and on.
00:36:46.480 The health care system, despite running these deficits, longest health care wait times now
00:36:51.580 in B.C. than ever before,
00:36:53.180 one million British Columbians without a family doctor,
00:36:56.140 this obsession with playing identity politics
00:36:58.520 over every single issue.
00:37:00.940 You know, and I'm forgetting things.
00:37:02.340 There's so many different issues that David E.B. did,
00:37:04.360 and it was all part and parcel of Justin Trudeau's agenda.
00:37:09.220 And you see Justin Trudeau kind of being,
00:37:12.880 I think Harrison will go down as one of the worst
00:37:14.440 prime ministers in Canada's history.
00:37:15.760 Yes, absolutely.
00:37:17.740 Is there a concern that if the Conservatives are to win tonight,
00:37:20.460 that the scale of the problems that they will be burdened with
00:37:24.820 coming into office and coming into government
00:37:27.500 could just be turned around on them
00:37:30.840 and the NDP could just as quickly start blaming them for their own failures.
00:37:34.840 Because if you're entering a situation that is just so dire,
00:37:37.480 it's going to take a lot of time to repair the damage.
00:37:41.500 Yeah, I think there'll be some things that are low-hanging fruit,
00:37:44.940 that are easy to fix.
00:37:45.740 Repealing DRIPA and starting to restore some certainty
00:37:48.460 over the land-based and private property rights,
00:37:50.760 it's easy to take those first couple steps.
00:37:53.340 Repealing SOGI, getting our education system
00:37:56.040 to focus on core reading, writing, arithmetic,
00:37:59.340 and not on this weird gender ideology or anything like that.
00:38:02.480 I think that's a pretty straightforward fix.
00:38:04.640 What's not going to be easy is dealing with the $14 billion hole
00:38:08.900 that the NDP has left this province in,
00:38:11.760 with fixing the mess that they have left in health care,
00:38:14.680 with restoring investor confidence.
00:38:16.280 So I do think that there are going to be some easy wins that a future Premier Dirksen would be able to lock in quite early.
00:38:25.820 And then there will be some other long-term challenges that will be much more difficult.
00:38:30.520 It seems like there is, from my perspective of the B.C. Conservative Caucus, that there is actually quite a lot of diversity of opinion.
00:38:39.200 You have what you would consider to be your B.C. United and Liberal candidates.
00:38:44.680 You also have really conservative candidates and MLAs.
00:38:49.620 Is this going to have a long-term stability,
00:38:56.140 or is there actually just such vast opinions on such important issues in the province within this party
00:39:01.920 that actually that is going to be a major issue for Lorne Dirksen if he is to win tonight?
00:39:07.320 Yeah, I actually don't think, a lot of that comes down to Lorne's leadership,
00:39:11.120 which I think he's proven here over the course of the campaign.
00:39:13.840 But I don't actually, as someone who serves in a federal caucus of 140 people,
00:39:18.260 I actually don't see a wider variation of ideological differences within the B.C. Conservatives,
00:39:25.720 any wider than within the federal Conservative Party.
00:39:28.780 A good example is during the leadership race and during the Juneau News debate,
00:39:34.400 you still had, although you had these huge clashes of personality,
00:39:37.520 I would say, Keenan, you saw broad consensus on most of the major issues.
00:39:42.140 So every candidate was saying that they were going to repeal DRIP.
00:39:44.880 But every candidate was saying we needed to get the budget deficit under control,
00:39:48.860 that we needed to end safe supply, that decriminalization had been a disaster.
00:39:53.100 So there's definitely, you know, an ideological spectrum within the party.
00:39:58.100 But I do think on those core issues, there is a degree of consensus.
00:40:02.860 And moving beyond that, I think it comes down to leadership.
00:40:06.100 And it's going to be up to Lorne Dirksen.
00:40:07.960 But the fact that that same caucus that at other times for other leaders has proven challenging got behind him is, I think, a reason to be, cause to be optimistic.
00:40:20.660 It's a storybook event where the leader, the good leader is the one that never sought it out.
00:40:27.440 The people running in leadership races are often the ones that have been dreaming about it their whole lives, but they're not necessarily the most qualified.
00:40:34.240 We have a short clip that was produced by Harrison earlier this week that outlines all of the failures of the NDP government and David Eby and basically explains why we are seeing a surge in support for the Conservative Party, whether it's for Lorne, whether it's for the individual candidates, or whether it's people just getting out to vote because they're tired of David Eby.
00:40:59.280 and I want to throw to that now. I want to show people exactly what David E.B. has been up to
00:41:03.600 over these last few years he's been in power. The B.C. and E.B. have been in power for almost 10
00:41:10.100 years. When they took office in 2017 they promised to make life more affordable, to improve health
00:41:15.920 care, tackle the housing crisis, and make life better for ordinary British Columbians. Well after
00:41:21.620 10 years how has that worked out? The province is dealing with a housing crisis, a homelessness,
00:41:26.980 and addiction crisis, serious healthcare problems, growing deficits, out-of-control debt, and a
00:41:34.000 deterioration of public order. So let's go through 10 of the biggest failures of British Columbia's
00:41:39.840 NDP government. Number 10, the international student system. Let's start with one that doesn't
00:41:45.360 get enough attention. Under the NDP, British Columbia became a massive destination for
00:41:51.100 international students. By 2024, British Columbia had roughly 175,000 international post-secondary
00:41:59.360 students, including up to 94,000 at private institutions. Remember, the federal government
00:42:06.500 controls immigration, but the provinces control education, so the ultimate incentive structure
00:42:11.760 was created by the provincial government. If you're going to create the incentives to allow
00:42:16.480 private businesses and public colleges to bring in tens of thousands of international students
00:42:21.620 when you already have a housing crisis and an affordability crisis, ultimately, that's on the
00:42:26.780 provincial government. Number nine, forestry. Forestry is one of the industries that built
00:42:31.660 British Columbia. But over the years, we've watched as sawmills close, operations curtailed,
00:42:36.820 and forestry communities devastated. The NDP says a lot of that is outside of their control.
00:42:41.960 They blame tariffs and other external factors. Now, some of that is fair, but if you're sitting
00:42:45.660 on some of the largest supply of timber in the world, government policy should be making it
00:42:50.160 easier to build things, harvest timber, and actually keep mills operating. Now, more and
00:42:56.280 more communities are wondering whether the industry they've depended on for generations
00:43:00.540 actually has a future in British Columbia. Number eight, the rebuilding of Lytton. In 2021,
00:43:06.580 wildfires destroyed roughly 90% of the village of Lytton. Two people died. It was a disaster.
00:43:13.040 but the government's responsibility didn't end when the fire was extinguished.
00:43:16.960 Rebuilding Lytton turned into a years-long process and in 2026 the BC Auditor General
00:43:22.880 examined the province's role in the recovery. The report identified clear challenges with the
00:43:28.320 province's support and funding of the recovery, including concerns about the time and cost
00:43:32.800 involved. It's not blaming the NDP for the wildfire, it's about whether governments can actually
00:43:37.600 deliver when people desperately need it. If your house burns down and your entire community is
00:43:41.840 destroyed you shouldn't have to spend years trying to navigate government bureaucracy just to rebuild
00:43:47.200 your life number seven crime and disorder let's talk about public safety when the ndp came into
00:43:54.000 power in british columbia bc's crime severity index was 73.6 in 2024 that number had reached 77.9 the
00:44:03.840 The NDP embraced soft on crime policies, weak measures on repeat offenders, retail theft,
00:44:11.580 public disorder, an extortion crisis throughout British Columbia that has become an international
00:44:16.860 story. NDP soft on crime policies creating the most predictable of outcomes, lawlessness.
00:44:24.940 Number six, healthcare. Healthcare is probably the easiest place to see the difference between
00:44:29.620 spending money and getting results. The NDP has dramatically increased healthcare spending,
00:44:35.100 but British Columbians are still struggling to get basic care. Emergency rooms across the province
00:44:39.980 have been closed. Communities have been struggling to recruit doctors, and people are waiting for
00:44:45.780 primary care. The government will point to new hospitals and healthcare workers and billions in
00:44:51.300 funding, but at some point you just have to ask, can people actually get healthcare when they need
00:44:55.560 in BC. Number five, the toxic drug crisis. This is probably the biggest failure of the NDP era.
00:45:01.980 British Columbia has been devastated by the toxic drug crisis. Thousands of people died. It is
00:45:08.120 everywhere in British Columbia cities and towns. In 2023, the British Columbia government jumped
00:45:14.260 headfirst into the decriminalization experiment. The policy quickly became a source of enormous
00:45:19.720 controversy, particularly over public drug use and disorder. Eventually, the provincial government
00:45:25.840 backed away and reversed course on their own decision, which was the right move, by the way,
00:45:32.060 to addiction. But think about it. A policy that was presented to British Columbians as a
00:45:36.360 major position on BC's approach to solving the addiction crisis lasted just three years. People
00:45:43.640 deserve treatment, and ordinary people deserve to be able to walk safely down the streets
00:45:49.460 of their communities. Think about the lives that could have been saved had the BC government not
00:45:54.760 experimented with radical decriminalization policies and made the right decision the first
00:46:00.500 time. Number four, housing. Housing was already expensive when the NDP came to power in 2017.
00:46:06.340 But after almost 10 years, it's still one of the biggest problems facing British Columbians. The
00:46:10.800 government has tried basically everything. Vacancy taxes, speculation taxes, rent controls,
00:46:16.320 short-term rental restrictions, billions of dollars in government spending, you name it,
00:46:21.960 they've tried it. The BC government, just like the federal government in Ottawa, point to
00:46:25.820 tens of thousands of new homes being built in the province. But British Columbians can't live 1.00
00:46:32.200 in government announcements. They have to live in houses. And young British Columbians, 1.00
00:46:37.080 first-time homebuyers, can't afford to buy a home. They can't live in the communities they
00:46:42.540 grew up in. After nearly a decade of NDP government, that problem hasn't gotten any better.
00:46:48.440 Number three, the size of government. The NDP's approach to government spending
00:46:53.180 is truly unbelievable. The 2017 budget projected a taxpayer-supported debt at around $43 billion.
00:47:01.600 Today, the province is projecting a taxpayer-supported debt approaching $189 billion
00:47:08.320 dollars over the current fiscal plan the government is running deficits of 13 12 and 11 billion dollars
00:47:14.880 over the next three years the government dresses it all up as public investment but at some point
00:47:20.320 someone's gonna have to pay the bill government has gotten dramatically bigger in british columbia
00:47:25.840 and with all this investment has anything actually gotten better in the province or did david eby
00:47:31.360 just rack up a giant debt bill for pretty much nothing. Number two, the fiscal record. This
00:47:38.220 deserves its own spot because the transformation in British Columbia is extraordinary. When the
00:47:43.800 NDP came to power, the BC government was running a surplus. In 2017, the budget projected a $295
00:47:50.800 million surplus. And today, the government is running deficits in the tens of billions. A
00:47:56.460 completely different approach to government. The NDP doesn't just have a spending problem,
00:48:01.420 although that's obvious. Their problems are now structural, because once the government
00:48:05.640 gets used to spending all this money, cutting that money, which will be necessary, becomes
00:48:11.600 politically uncomfortable. So the government has to keep generating more revenue to keep running
00:48:17.280 up public deficits, which means the burden lies entirely on the British Columbia taxpayer.
00:48:22.380 Number one, they've run out of excuses. This is ultimately the biggest problem for the BC NDP.
00:48:29.180 They've been in power for almost 10 years. The excuses of blaming the previous government
00:48:33.640 have all run out. David Eby is in sole ownership of his own record and he's going to have to run
00:48:39.620 with it. The NDP have presided over a province where housing remains extraordinarily expensive.
00:48:45.720 The toxic drug crisis has devastated communities. Healthcare access remains a major concern.
00:48:51.000 debt has exploded and the government is running enormous deficits and in so many
00:48:55.920 of these instances the BC NDP have had to reverse course on their own policy
00:49:01.560 failures basically admitting that their original ideas don't work the housing
00:49:07.200 policy decisions the decriminalization the public safety issues international
00:49:12.240 education the government just keeps changing direction all right that was
00:49:16.260 the BC NDP's 10 biggest failures since 2017. Reminder that you can use my code JunoNews.com

00:49:46.260 against the leader of 1BC, Dallas Brody.
00:49:50.860 Just for our viewers to know,
00:49:53.400 we did invite Dallas Brody to come on the stream.
00:49:56.240 That was declined.
00:49:57.920 But we do have Carson here,
00:49:59.540 and I want to get your sense of what you were hearing at the doors
00:50:02.740 during this RIP period.
00:50:05.900 Dallas Brody has been in MLA for a while now,
00:50:09.100 and I think that she aligns with our audience a lot at Jimenez.
00:50:14.080 She was a conservative party at MLA originally.
00:50:18.680 And for all kinds of dramatic reasons, she's no longer part of the party.
00:50:24.600 And you're running against her.
00:50:25.480 And I want to know what the constituents of that riding actually think.
00:50:28.820 Because my understanding of your riding Vancouver, Colchenna, is that it's not like a particularly radical right-wing riding.
00:50:39.060 Tell me about it.
00:50:39.840 Yeah, absolutely.
00:50:40.420 quite frankly, we've been having a hard time finding anyone in our riding who supports Dallas
00:50:46.300 Brody. We don't want to count our chickens before they hatch, but we've had thousands of conversations
00:50:52.180 with constituents at the door who understand that the Conservative Party is the only option
00:50:57.760 other than the NDP to run this province. At the end of the day, a vote for Dallas Brody,
00:51:03.260 a vote for 1BC, is a vote for the NDP. And the vast majority of our constituents understand that.
00:51:09.820 But what, from you as a candidate who's running against Dallas Brody, what do you actually disagree with her on?
00:51:16.620 Yeah, to be clear, I'm not running against Dallas Brody.
00:51:19.400 I'm running against the BC NDP and their horrific record in our province.
00:51:24.220 40,000 jobs lost in the past year alone.
00:51:28.520 A 16% tax increase on working families this year alone.
00:51:33.480 Those are the concerns we're hearing from our constituents.
00:51:36.040 and the B.C. Conservative Party is the only party that has a chance of forming government.
00:51:42.040 You sound like someone who has media training.
00:51:44.920 You know what? I've never had formal media training,
00:51:47.520 but I've done a lot of interviews over the course of the past few years.
00:51:51.420 Well, you used to be with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, which is a friend of Junior News.
00:51:55.720 The Canadian Taxpayers Federation does great work fighting for taxpayers.
00:51:59.180 Is that all you care about as a candidate?
00:52:01.860 Is it tax, tax, tax, and we want to keep taxes low?
00:52:04.260 we want to cut wasteful spending, or are there other issues that you like, resonate with you?
00:52:08.880 Yeah, absolutely. I think the biggest issues facing British Columbia right now is our economic
00:52:14.320 decline, our free fall under David Eby and the BCNDP. We need to get government back to the
00:52:20.900 basics. That means low taxes, and that means services, frontline services that actually work
00:52:26.640 for people. Because right now, we've never had longer surgical waitlists. We've never had more
00:52:33.160 young people leaving our province. And I think British Columbians need change. They need strong
00:52:38.500 leadership for these serious times. And the B.C. Conservatives are the only option.
00:52:43.100 So, Carson, if you guys were to win tonight, the Conservatives were to win,
00:52:46.300 you would be inheriting a colossal fiscal disaster on day one. How long do you think it would take
00:52:54.820 if you have a majority government to clean up this mess? And is it even possible to get this
00:53:01.340 thing back to baseline. Absolutely. And I'm so glad you asked that question. Before I start
00:53:07.100 getting into it, let me just paint a picture here. One premier, David Eby, has more than doubled
00:53:13.780 BC's provincial debt per capita. British Columbians have never paid more in taxes and gotten less
00:53:21.400 from our provincial government. So getting our economy supercharged, getting those taxes low,
00:53:28.000 it's going to take hard work. But Lauren Dirksen and the BC Conservative Party have committed to
00:53:33.300 doing that hard work. So there's a few things that we can do right away. We can raise that
00:53:39.200 lowest income tax bracket to more than $30,000, which will save your average working family
00:53:45.700 about $2,000 a year. That's money that goes right into supercharging our economy. We're also going
00:53:52.900 to cut regulations to make sure BC's an investable place to do business. For every one regulation our
00:53:59.940 government brings in, we're going to cut two regulations to make sure our businesses aren't
00:54:05.460 bogged down in red tape. We're also going to do things like repealing DRIPA and working with our
00:54:11.340 First Nations communities to make sure there's certainty around private property rights and
00:54:17.100 ensure British Columbia's an investable place to do business. Because under David Eby and the NDP,
00:54:22.900 we've seen the exact opposite. There's uncertainty around our economy, which is
00:54:27.980 chasing those investors and job creators away. Tonight, I think British Columbians are going to
00:54:33.700 change that. So I want to ask you a little bit about a policy that's not particularly on the
00:54:38.880 economic side of your platform. But when it comes to DRIPA, and specifically an issue that Carolyn
00:54:45.840 Elliott has been talking about a lot, it's race-based access to parks. That's something
00:54:50.260 that 1BC your opponents in your riding have said uh is terrible they you know they have been loud
00:54:56.000 advocates to repeal drippa something that conservative party members uh mlas elected
00:55:01.880 and candidates have waffled on not during this campaign necessarily but before they many members
00:55:07.740 of your party voted for drippa um nobody in 1bc ever did and i'm wondering if you can tell me
00:55:12.400 one do you commit to repealing trip and two what do you think about race-based access to
00:55:16.660 provincial parks. Yeah, well, to be very clear, provincial parks belong to British Columbians.
00:55:23.100 I think every British Columbian should be able to enjoy a hike in Joffrey Lakes or
00:55:28.740 any of our other beautiful public parks. British Columbia is the most beautiful jurisdiction in the
00:55:35.740 world, and every British Columbian should have access to those outdoors. And to be clear, the
00:55:42.140 BC Conservative Party has been crystal clear that we will repeal DRIPA and protect private property
00:55:48.640 rights. Is that kind of like the main social priority of the party after the economic policies
00:55:56.740 that you've kind of laid out here, that DRIPA is the number one issue, or are you also concerned
00:56:00.180 about SOGI? I guess my question is, how are you guys going to juggle this complete cluster,
00:56:06.680 we'll keep this PG rated, but how are you going to juggle the disaster that David Eby's handing
00:56:11.620 you when it comes to triaging the issues you need to deal with? Sure. Well, I think a good government
00:56:16.420 should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. We're going to focus on supercharging our 0.98
00:56:21.680 economy, but that doesn't mean we're not going to focus on other basics. We've been very clear
00:56:27.280 about our plan to bring back safe streets by ending the NDP's failed experiment with toxic
00:56:34.120 drugs. We're going to hire more police officers and end the catch and release revolving door
00:56:40.120 that's been putting violent criminals right back on our streets night after night after night.
00:56:46.520 A good government can walk and chew gum at the same time.
00:56:49.620 We're going to fix the economy, but we're also going to focus on those other issues
00:56:53.580 that British Columbians, our constituents, care about.
00:56:56.860 Well, as polls close soon here, they're going to be closing in 10 minutes.
00:57:01.500 We'll be watching your writing closely to see exactly what happens.
00:57:05.400 I hear it's going to be tight.
00:57:06.580 nobody is counting their eggs before they hatch
00:57:10.000 and I don't think you are either
00:57:11.180 but we're going to be following along with those polls
00:57:14.140 powered by Polywave here today at Juno News on our live broadcast
00:57:18.060 again one thing I want to mention to everyone
00:57:19.980 please share this broadcast whether you're watching on YouTube, Rumble or Twitter
00:57:23.640 getting the message out that this is the place where you can go to
00:57:26.700 listen to all sides of the story
00:57:28.820 in a way that is not funded by the government
00:57:31.000 like all of our peers on the risers across here
00:57:33.640 I want to bring up a little bit of an explanation of how we run Juno News,
00:57:40.040 and it's all the subscribers that keep us running.
00:57:43.540 If you do not have a subscription to Juno News yet, I encourage you to go do that.

00:58:03.640 Transcription by CastingWords
00:58:33.640 all right okay we are back thanks to Carson for coming on the show and sharing your thoughts
00:59:00.080 you know I have to say he was very well media trained that was he didn't always
00:59:07.640 answer my questions I guess we do have an eye for all the people in the chat
00:59:11.540 that are talking about this we have an ongoing invitation to Dallas Brody and
00:59:15.980 her entire team I want them on the show tonight I want to talk to them they are
00:59:20.720 you know they they're speaking to a meaningful part of this province the
00:59:25.460 conservatives are polling they're gonna they're they're pulling well of course
00:59:29.240 and the likelihood that the 1BC forms government is zero but they're still
00:59:35.240 speaking and representing issues that many people care about and a lot of
00:59:38.360 people don't trust the conservative party despite their hospitality for us
00:59:41.800 here I don't want this to be a show about how great the conservatives are
00:59:45.080 1BC has been speaking about things that the conservative party often deems to be
00:59:49.880 too edgy what do you think about that well these right-wing parties that that
00:59:56.460 are built to oppose establishment conservative mainstream parties exist when the win when the
01:00:03.260 opportunity comes around and that's what we've seen right the bc the reason one bc exists the
01:00:10.540 reason that it speaks to voters in this province to conservative voters in this province is because
01:00:16.940 it's not being it's not being given by the bc conservative party on on certain issues
01:00:22.740 And you're right to point out, we should not just accept the BC Conservative Party
01:00:27.700 as the party on all of the major issues faced in this province.
01:00:32.440 They have been soft in the past on DRIPA.
01:00:35.940 They have been soft on the First Nations issues, which are seriously animating in this province.
01:00:40.960 If they weren't, 1BC wouldn't exist.
01:00:43.260 If they weren't softer on these issues, Dallas Brody would still be a Conservative MLA.
01:00:48.800 She would be running in Vancouver, Kilchenna tonight on the Conservative ticket.
01:00:52.960 So that tells you why the party exists and what is actually going on there.
01:00:57.920 You know, I contend that the Conservatives are doing well right now,
01:01:02.440 not because of Warren Dirksen or any of his candidates or their policy,
01:01:07.460 but it's because David Eby has been such a disaster.
01:01:10.780 And it is going to be trial by fire for him and his team
01:01:13.700 that they need to demonstrate significant capabilities and competencies when it comes to governing.
01:01:21.220 And then they also need to, so they need to govern for British Columbians,
01:01:24.860 which is like a wide constituency of people who vote green and then also vote for 1BC.
01:01:30.920 The range of voters in this province is unlike almost any other province in this country.
01:01:36.620 And then they also have to govern in a way that keeps their base together,
01:01:40.700 which is famously difficult for the Conservative Party here in BC.
01:01:44.520 Well, remember, there are quite a few candidates on the Conservative ticket tonight
01:01:50.420 who left the party, who either abandoned the party or joined Centre BC,
01:01:56.620 only to immediately turn that around and rejoin the Conservative Party.
01:02:01.140 Which, again, everybody has the right to question the conservatism of someone who's willing to do that.
01:02:06.960 Look, I think the question we're going to talk about throughout the night is,
01:02:09.720 what kind of Conservative Party, if they are to win tonight, is the Conservative Party of British
01:02:15.100 Columbia? Where do we put them on the spectrum? If we want to call the Ontario PCs or maybe the
01:02:19.480 Nova Scotia PCs the most centrist Conservative Party and probably put the UCP as being the most
01:02:26.540 Conservative provincial government, where do we position the Conservative Party of BC if they are
01:02:30.900 to hold government? I think it's probably somewhere in the middle. All right, well, polls are about to
01:02:36.100 close. And before they close, we'll have a message from our sponsor here. And then we'll
01:02:42.420 have another guest, a conservative strategist, Ben Woodfinden. He's going to be joining us right
01:02:47.560 after a quick break. Don't turn the dial or click away or however you're watching this,
01:02:52.640 probably not on TV, so there's no dial. But we will be right back. Polls are about to close
01:02:57.040 and stay tuned. Canada can go smoke free, but today access to regulated smoke free alternatives
01:03:04.320 and information can vary depending on where someone lives. Different provincial rules create
01:03:09.400 confusion and leave openings for illicit products. When regulations don't work together, illegal
01:03:14.580 markets exploit the gaps. A coherent national framework can make expectations clearer and help
01:03:20.640 enforcement focus on compliance, underage access, and illegal trade. Patchwork doesn't work.

01:03:31.520 All right, we are back.
01:03:33.700 We have Ben Woodfindon.
01:03:35.320 Am I pronouncing that right?
01:03:36.340 Correct.
01:03:36.740 All right, you have been a Conservative Party strategist for a long time,
01:03:40.080 all the way out from Ottawa, now here.
01:03:42.680 You're living in British Columbia, and you are working for the party, I take it.
01:03:46.340 Yeah, I'm the Director of Communications.
01:03:48.360 What has it been like on the inside of this campaign
01:03:51.160 compared to other campaigns you've worked on?
01:03:52.740 Well, look, it's been, we, I think the term we've been using is kind of building the plane as we fly it.
01:03:58.480 You know, David Eby called this very cynical snap election that I'm cautiously optimistic British Columbians are going to punish him for.
01:04:04.960 But, you know, we had to build this thing as we went.
01:04:09.340 Campaigns are always fast moving.
01:04:11.320 This was especially, I've done a few campaigns now.
01:04:13.580 This is the fastest moving campaign I've ever worked on.
01:04:16.300 But sometimes that helps.
01:04:17.840 It focuses the mind.
01:04:19.640 We have a really, really, really good team.
01:04:22.240 And like one other thing else, we have a leader who has grown to the occasion.
01:04:25.180 Every single day I've seen Lorne, he's gotten better and better.
01:04:28.200 And I think he's very ready to become a premier.
01:04:30.440 One of the things I noticed at the start of this campaign was David Eby talking about Donald Trump.
01:04:34.960 Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump.
01:04:36.320 Everyone's seen the video of him saying it like 160 times in his first opening press conference when he called this election.
01:04:43.380 And recently he has not been talking about that.
01:04:45.680 Have you understood, like, done any, like, polling or folks groups?
01:04:49.580 or do you know why that change happened?
01:04:52.120 Well, I'm not giving too many things away,
01:04:55.720 but this election is not about Donald Trump.
01:05:00.660 This election is about David Eby and his record, right?
01:05:03.100 And I think lots of people voted today,
01:05:05.660 lots of people voted in advance polls,
01:05:07.440 and I think what this election is about
01:05:10.620 is do you want another four years of this guy?
01:05:13.580 Has your life gotten better in the last four years?
01:05:15.160 Is there anything you can talk about in the last four years?
01:05:17.800 Whether it's crime, whether it's taxes, whether it's, you know, all sorts of things.
01:05:24.580 Has your life gotten better in British Columbia?
01:05:26.380 And I think the answer on that is a pretty decisive no.
01:05:29.320 And so I think we, and look, I think we, part of the thing you have to do in a campaign is try and define the ballot question.
01:05:35.240 Sometimes you win that battle, sometimes you lose that battle.
01:05:37.800 But I think the ballot question for this campaign wasn't about Donald Trump.
01:05:40.980 It was about David Eby and his disastrous record.
01:05:43.040 And I think that's ultimately what people are voting on today.
01:05:44.820 Well, polls are closing here in almost a minute now, and people, you know, if they're not in line, they will not be able to vote.
01:05:51.980 But if you are in line watching this stream, stay in line and vote.
01:05:56.040 You'll be allowed to vote as long as you are in line before 8 p.m.
01:06:01.180 When you look at how this campaign has gone, one thing that is kind of general campaign wisdom is that if you're looking for a path to victory, you're losing.
01:06:12.100 And if you're looking for a path to defeat, you're winning.
01:06:15.300 What is the way that this could go terribly wrong for the B.C. conservative right now?
01:06:19.900 That's a good question.
01:06:23.400 Let's go back to what we talked about before.
01:06:26.420 This election is about David Eby.
01:06:28.400 It's about his record.
01:06:30.300 I think David Eby has tried to do everything in his power to distract British Columbians from this. 0.69
01:06:35.900 He's thrown every silly attack, every absurd kind of...
01:06:39.520 He's tried to strawman us. 0.97
01:06:41.200 He's lied about us.
01:06:43.520 They've tried to make the election about that.
01:06:45.200 And, you know, it's a world where people believe that,
01:06:48.560 and it's a problem for us.
01:06:49.420 But quite frankly, I don't think that's happened.
01:06:51.560 I think the vision of the party that we put forward
01:06:54.260 is one that is ready to govern, is ready to deliver.
01:06:57.300 I think Lorne looks like a premier.
01:06:59.180 I think people can see him as a premier.
01:07:00.660 They see him as, like, I'll just speak from my experience with Lorne.
01:07:03.440 He is a, the guy you see on camera is the guy that he is.
01:07:06.840 He's a real guy that cares about real issues
01:07:09.600 and talks to rural people about David.
01:07:11.860 And so, you know, the NDP have fear-monged about us.
01:07:15.020 They've tried all sorts of kind of desperate tricks,
01:07:17.680 but I think British Columbians are actually smart enough to see through that.
01:07:21.000 And I'm cautiously optimistic that tonight they're going to get an outcome
01:07:24.580 that will show that David E.B.'s distractions didn't work
01:07:28.040 and they're ready for change.
01:07:29.560 And with that, British Columbians have said their final word.
01:07:34.840 Polls have closed.
01:07:36.720 Like I said earlier, if you're in line, stay in line.
01:07:39.280 if you're not in line it's too late uh but uh now we will have results coming in very shortly
01:07:45.760 uh results will come in both from advanced polls that were voted in before today and then today
01:07:51.840 uh today's votes will be manually counted by hand which i'm a fan of i prefer all ballots
01:07:57.040 to be counted by hand i think it's the way it's been done for a long time in uh all of you know
01:08:02.400 in the united kingdom in canada and here the i just don't trust ballot tabulators i don't know
01:08:08.160 what it is uh but it does take a little bit longer but that means we have more time uh with our
01:08:13.460 favorite people in the world our viewers um so i want to talk about the green party split in this
01:08:18.860 race uh there's not a full slate of green party candidates how do you think that's going to change
01:08:23.480 uh the breakdown of of vote split on the left in this province um they they don't have a full
01:08:30.160 slate um they do have a fairly uh i think they have 70 candidates 71 candidates something like
01:08:36.220 bet out of you know it's it's it's not quite a full slate but it's uh it's not it's not an
01:08:41.780 insignificant slate either um i'm like look i this will not surprise you i i'm you know i'm not
01:08:48.260 voting for the green party in this election uh but i do think emily lowen has run a fairly
01:08:52.160 impressive campaign i think she's mobilized voters that um younger voters especially and
01:08:59.560 i will see what the outcome looks like for them tomorrow or tonight um where the final seat
01:09:04.380 counters after this but but I think she's I think she's actually done I think I don't think she's
01:09:09.540 she's impressed me I'll say that not because I agree with her on anything but I think she's got
01:09:16.160 some energy and she's she's young right I think she's got some like youthful energy but I think 0.85
01:09:21.480 she also speaks to there's a lot of British plummings that were very frustrated with David
01:09:25.480 Eby and the NDP have spent the last couple days desperately trying to convince green voters to go
01:09:30.320 over to the NDP.
01:09:33.100 We'll see what happens, but
01:09:34.440 I think the
01:09:36.460 Greens have run, by
01:09:38.460 Green standards, I think they've run a pretty effective
01:09:40.520 campaign. Doesn't mean I agree with anything 1.00
01:09:42.540 they're saying, but
01:09:43.320 yeah, I think one of the things
01:09:46.480 I'll be curious to see the exact results of tonight is to see
01:09:48.520 exactly whether they can translate
01:09:50.300 whatever momentum they have
01:09:52.440 into games.
01:09:54.580 We were talking earlier about how
01:09:56.240 BC is one of those provinces.
01:09:57.900 It's probably got the widest Overton window of political choice and discourse of any province in this country,
01:10:05.780 with people voting for Greens and their neighbours who are voting for 1BC.
01:10:09.320 Has 1BC, from your perspective, shown up at the doors,
01:10:14.840 and has their political machine operated and functioned as they intended it or thought it might would?
01:10:19.800 Or were they caught off guard as much as everyone else was with this snap election?
01:10:24.340 Look, I think everyone other than David Eby was caught off guard by this because, again, he called this very cynical snap election.
01:10:31.640 There was a craven opportunism to try and take advantage of what he perceived as weakness in the Conservative Party.
01:10:37.680 Now, to be very clear, I think there's one Conservative option on the ballot.
01:10:41.980 And if you want to get rid of David Eby and you want to get rid of the NDP, you have one clear option that you can vote for.
01:10:47.540 I think tonight we'll see that.
01:10:49.020 And I think most conservative British Columbians are going to recognize that.
01:10:56.260 But yeah, sure, everyone was caught off by this.
01:10:58.560 But it's the nature of politics, right?
01:11:00.280 It's a fast-moving game.
01:11:01.480 So even if you're not ready, we weren't ready when this happened, of course.
01:11:07.140 We had to build it, as I was saying earlier, we had to build the plane as we were flying it.
01:11:12.580 But I think this conservative party of British Columbia is so motivated.
01:11:17.900 It is united and unified like I don't think it's ever been before.
01:11:22.420 It's ready to govern. It's ready to win.
01:11:24.500 And it's ready to bring, for the first time in a century, conservative government to this country. 0.97
01:11:29.640 Ben, one of the attack lines from the NDP was that Lauren Dirksen was not doing as much media as David Eby.
01:11:39.440 And even the NDP did put out numbers, but I think on a purely statistical basis,
01:11:46.260 david eby did more media was it was there a strategy from the bc conservative party to let
01:11:51.940 david eby make his own mistakes and basically allow him to pitch to bc voters why he does not
01:11:58.420 deserve to win look i don't want to have the specifics of any kind of strategy but um
01:12:04.980 i think every time david eby is in front of the microphone he impresses people less and less
01:12:10.100 he i think he's a little quite frankly desperate and kind of uh flinging whatever he can of the
01:12:15.620 wall to try and see if anything sticks. So that's why they're doing that. And of course
01:12:20.000 they've attacked us on this. I think it's a silly attack. Lorne's done a ton of media. 0.93
01:12:25.800 He's done a ton of press conferences, a ton of media. Now is he going out the same, you
01:12:30.940 know, 15 times a day, the way it seems like Ebi was doing sometimes? Sure. No, but Lorne
01:12:37.220 answers questions. And quite frankly, if you go watch Lorne in any of the kind of the press
01:12:42.940 conferences or the media interviews he's done uh he's given clear answers he's a he's an honest
01:12:47.320 guy and he's behaved like an honest guy he shoots from the hip like he gives straight answers so i
01:12:51.360 yeah the ndp can say all they want about that but it's it's it's i know it's it's one of their many
01:12:56.300 desperate attacks at the insurance lauren dirksen really embodies what i what i think many canadians
01:13:04.540 would view as the most improbable of potential premiers in this country really someone that
01:13:11.540 came out of nowhere in the commute on the communication side did you have to work with him
01:13:17.420 to do some media training was there was there was there a quick sort of set up to get ready
01:13:25.100 for this election because he was a point he was appointed interim leader and thrust right into the
01:13:28.660 middle of an election how did that how did that work out behind the scenes well let's be clear
01:13:32.200 about one thing first lawn if he has elected premier tonight he will be the premier there's
01:13:36.460 No, there's no ambiguity about that.
01:13:37.880 There's no doubts about that.
01:13:39.720 The second thing I'll say, Lorne, I cannot tell you how impressed I have been.
01:13:44.900 I've been working very close with him the last month or so.
01:13:48.420 And Lorne is, he's grown.
01:13:52.580 You grow in a campaign, and he's grown.
01:13:56.100 The other thing I'd say about Lorne is he's, as I said before, he shoots from the hip.
01:14:01.960 He's an honest guy.
01:14:03.740 He's a real guy.
01:14:04.840 He's a real person who cares about real people, and he talks about real issues.
01:14:10.660 And I think that has shone through with Lorne.
01:14:13.760 Every time I see him in front of a microphone, in front of a camera, he just impresses me more.
01:14:20.020 And I think the same thing has happened with British Columbia.
01:14:22.080 I think that's why, again, we're going to see how tonight goes, but I'm cautiously optimistic.
01:14:28.880 And I think Lorne, he's not just grown into the...
01:14:30.920 He is ready for this job.
01:14:32.720 He's ready to be premier.
01:14:33.580 And I think British Columbians, if they choose to elect him as their premier tonight,
01:14:39.220 I think they're going to like this guy.
01:14:40.820 Because quite frankly, he's a really likable guy.
01:14:45.700 He's also something I've learned about Lorne, working with him.
01:14:49.880 Lorne is, you know, he certainly has this kind of like real person persona,
01:14:53.940 because that's who he is.
01:14:55.060 Lorne is a serious guy.
01:14:56.680 He thinks about stuff.
01:14:57.560 He asks the right questions.
01:14:59.080 He knows his files.
01:15:01.240 That's exactly what you want to do with a premier.
01:15:02.400 You want a premier who listens, but you also want a premier who knows what they're talking about.
01:15:06.400 And I think Lorne has both of those in space.
01:15:09.120 Do you think that there's been a significant enough time, or a reasonable enough time,
01:15:13.880 to actually demonstrate to British Columbian voters who this Lorne Dirksen guy is?
01:15:19.320 Or are people going to the polls today because the ballot question really is about David Eby
01:15:22.940 and whether they want to give him another four years?
01:15:27.140 Look, it was a short election.
01:15:30.260 And you only have so much time.
01:15:32.400 Like, I've worked on longer campaigns where you have, you know, two months versus a month.
01:15:37.640 But I think the way that this election has gone, I think clearly British Columbians like what they're seeing from Warren.
01:15:46.180 I think there's, and there's room to grow there.
01:15:49.620 British Columbians will get to know him more if he has elected Premier tonight.
01:15:53.720 He'll get to know him more, and I'm pretty confident they're going to like what they see.
01:15:57.720 No, no, I think, look, without tooting anyone's horns,
01:16:01.000 I think we've run a stellar campaign where we've got Lorne in front of people.
01:16:07.100 We've run ads like we were doing the campaign.
01:16:09.940 We've had Lorne in front of cameras.
01:16:11.560 We've had him visiting every single part of the province,
01:16:14.020 which is what you do as a premier.
01:16:16.120 And every time, the one thing that has been consistent about Lorne
01:16:19.940 is people meet him, they like him.
01:16:21.140 People see him, they like him.
01:16:23.600 I'm going to keep saying he's a real guy, cares about real people,
01:16:26.380 talks about real issues and i think that ultimately appeals to voters all right um well thank you for
01:16:31.900 joining us ben uh we are going to be watching closely as the provincial results start pouring
01:16:37.740 in we just have received our first uh results showing the ndp uh leading with one seat you
01:16:45.500 should be able to see that on the bottom of your screen once we'll pull up the seat count and have
01:16:49.820 that displayed the entire time so that you guys can see exactly where this is at uh like we said
01:16:55.180 at the start of the broadcast we need we need people here uh sorry we need uh to to form a
01:17:01.900 majority government we're looking for 47 seats out of 93 uh once we get that uh we will be able to
01:17:11.100 call the government whether it's a majority or a minority and we will be following along of course
01:17:16.060 throughout the entire night all right we are going to uh show uh we are going to we have a long list
01:17:24.860 of guests that are coming on here tonight we're gonna have just margaretta jogovall join us uh
01:17:30.060 she is the i can see she is the candidate for vancouver uh what is the riding for margaretta
01:17:38.140 it's it's a downtown riding it is vancouver yale town yale town it it absolutely blows my mind
01:17:46.780 that vancouver yale town which is like a downtown riding uh you know if this was calgary toronto if
01:17:53.580 If you had an adjacent riding to downtown Calgary, to the downtown core, that would not be in contention in a riding in a province that elects frequently the NDP.
01:18:03.280 Well, that's what I was asking Aaron Gunn. I said, what are we not getting right about this?
01:18:08.300 Because when I've been chatting with people involved in the B.C. Conservative Party, they don't act surprised that much about Yaletown.
01:18:15.320 But when I look at it, I go, if this was in any other city, this would be a guaranteed liberal or NDP seat.
01:18:24.260 And yet, Holy Wave is showing a very slight edge to the BC Conservative candidate in that riding, Margareta Dovgal.
01:18:34.300 I think if they win that, that's a big sign.
01:18:37.440 We're getting some numbers on the board now.
01:18:38.900 The Conservatives are leading in a race, and the NDP are leading in two right now.
01:18:45.320 early early right now so again polls have been closed for 12 minutes that number and that board
01:18:50.740 is going to look a lot different and i would say probably 30 minutes well i i don't i don't think
01:18:55.420 it's going to change much on the right um on on the left there those two boxes and maybe the middle
01:19:00.340 one the greens uh that's what we're really going to be watching the the likelihood of one bc winning
01:19:05.420 is even a single seat is extraordinarily slim there's one riding actually speaking with white
01:19:11.400 Playpool. He's their communications guy. He was telling me there's the riding of Coldwater 0.98
01:19:18.000 and then in Prince George as well there's another riding that could be close. But they really have
01:19:24.720 to move some mountains to get past the conservative momentum I think in those
01:19:29.440 ridings. But that is going to be the, whether there's a right-wing party further to the right
01:19:34.760 of the conservative party is going to be dependent on those two ridings. The likelihood of Dallas
01:19:38.260 already winning her riding uh as our two guests ago was telling us is a is a low chance i think
01:19:46.100 uh polly wave was saying that it's a hundred percent chance that the conservatives will win
01:19:50.100 it we'll see if that's actually true yeah so we're going to be watching how polly wave is predicting
01:19:55.700 riding by riding we can go into a few ridings we want you to pay attention as is typical in a bc
01:20:03.300 election race a lot of attention needs to be paid attention to surrey surrey has a bunch of seats
01:20:09.140 they're always closely contested and i think that's going to be a big sign for where we're
01:20:14.260 going tonight but here we go we can tell you where the conservatives are leading right now
01:20:18.980 in richmond steveston gordon jang is leading david eby obviously is leading in vancouver
01:20:26.340 point gray but we are going to see how this how these numbers change so kian what what do you what
01:20:34.900 are you in particular looking at right now uh are you going to follow the follow the crowd and go
01:20:39.860 look at surrey mostly so the surrey ridings for sure are going to determine government um much
01:20:45.620 like in alberta if you're you know we have a lot of viewers tuning in from alberta today
01:20:50.020 uh where suburban calgary votes is usually where government ends up they know that edmonton votes
01:20:55.700 NDP they know rural areas vote conservative and and then suburban Calgary decides and that's kind
01:21:00.580 of what Surrey is but there's a lot of specific writings here that there's unique stories in each
01:21:07.300 writing that that we want to be able to tell those stories and I'm going to watch closely and
01:21:11.620 the number one story is the premier himself David Eby in his writing of Vancouver Point Grey I want
01:21:17.700 to make sure our producers are able to pull up the map of the province so that when we're talking
01:21:23.940 about these specific writings our viewers are able to see it because i'm looking at it right now and
01:21:27.860 it's a map of colored in a little bit of orange with ndp writings that have been called and a
01:21:33.620 couple blue writings i want to walk people through what this map actually means and when you're
01:21:38.900 looking at the map you'll see uh there's there's going to be the color of the party that is leading
01:21:43.940 and if there's stripes through that that means that they're leading but it has not been called
01:21:48.820 once it's being called it will be a solid color uh so i expect very soon within the next five
01:21:54.980 to ten minutes we'll be able to start calling some of these right yeah we will and and it's
01:21:59.780 also important to just point out if you can if you can look at the seat count right now dallas
01:22:04.900 brody and 1bc they are actually leading they are on the board right now i do not expect that number
01:22:10.500 to remain betting markets poli wave no one has that coming but could this be something kian well
01:22:16.580 Well, that's with 0.1% of votes counted.
01:22:21.000 In fact, that amounts to four votes that has put Dallas...
01:22:24.980 Okay, we've got to zoom in further then.
01:22:26.220 I can promise you that in her campaign office right now,
01:22:30.600 they're throwing their hats in the air
01:22:32.140 because it looks great having that number on the board,
01:22:34.460 but does it mean anything? Probably not.
01:22:37.060 But what does mean something,
01:22:39.280 and we can sort of start to see a trend here,
01:22:42.440 maybe we'll see it throughout the night,
01:22:43.820 is Lauren Dirksen's Conservative Party 0.88
01:22:45.160 He's now sitting at six seats that he's leading in
01:22:47.280 with votes coming in.
01:22:49.120 We are looking at the map, hopefully, here.
01:22:53.160 If we could show that to the viewers,
01:22:54.720 I want to walk them through that.
01:22:56.000 And I want to look specifically at Vancouver Point Gray.
01:22:59.820 That is David Eby's riding.
01:23:02.400 The crowd here in the room is going wild.
01:23:04.680 It sounds like more results are just pouring in as we speak.
01:23:07.700 But Vancouver Point Gray, if we look at that
01:23:10.120 and highlight, zoom in on that,
01:23:11.600 David Eby is leading with over 50%, 50.7% of the vote there.
01:23:17.880 That's with 71 votes and not a whole lot of polls counting, but 1.4%.
01:23:22.820 So that's a sizable lead. 0.78
01:23:24.480 If he continues that, then that will be good news for him.
01:23:26.820 Him holding on to his seat, David Eby, I'm saying, would be meaningful for him.
01:23:32.960 Probably bad news for the NDP because they'll likely have to run a by-election for that seat if he resigns,
01:23:38.440 if the Conservatives end up winning.
01:23:39.940 The Green Party, something interesting, they're leading in West Vancouver Sea to Sky,
01:23:46.440 which was actually a writing that the Conservatives hoped they would secure.
01:23:50.720 Whether or not that ends up in the Green Party's hands is unclear.
01:23:56.120 Well, we wanted to see this new Green Party led by Emily Lowen.
01:24:00.840 We wanted to see if some of the polling was accurate, that they were doing quite well in the popular vote polling,
01:24:07.700 if that was going to actually start siphoning off votes for the NDP.
01:24:12.340 The Greens are not going to form government tonight.
01:24:14.680 No one predicts them to do that.
01:24:15.900 But if they are going to perform well on Vancouver Island,
01:24:19.160 if they're going to perform well in areas that actually were predicted to be conservative ridings right now,
01:24:25.240 this could indicate that the Greens are going to have a strong vote,
01:24:28.720 and that hurts the NDP significantly.
01:24:31.100 Yeah, well, the Green Party here in British Columbia thrives on being able to be the kingmaker.
01:24:37.500 They thrive in a situation where they are able to have two or three seats
01:24:41.600 and they can force the NDP to do the most radical, insane things of their dreams.
01:24:49.360 The likelihood of that happening is quite low.
01:24:52.880 And the fact that it's happened election after election,
01:24:56.220 where they have had just a bare-bones majority with the NDP,
01:25:00.180 and the Greens have been able to flex their political muscle despite being a...
01:25:04.460 All right, we've got a major update on the board now.
01:25:06.580 If you can make sure you see your seat count, that should update for you quickly.
01:25:12.120 We are looking at 27 conservative seats.
01:25:16.100 They are in the lead in 27 NDP with nine right now, and the Greens and Centre BC leading.
01:25:22.780 But again, as we've talked about with 1BC, that number is gone.
01:25:27.520 I predict the Centre BC number to go still very early.
01:25:31.600 But we're starting to get the map to fill out now, Kian.
01:25:33.900 map is filling out uh because we are partnered with polywave and some of the software they've
01:25:38.220 created to analyze votes as they come in and how much of the province is voted if we can if we can
01:25:43.340 get the producers to pull up the provincial map right now because i want to show what that wave
01:25:47.340 of blue looks like uh let's get the full screen of the full province on um but you know what what
01:25:53.900 polywave is telling us is that we're seeing these results with only point six percent of total votes
01:26:01.020 counted uh so that's you know not a lot but it's enough to put the conservatives at a pretty
01:26:06.940 sizable lead and when you see that on a provincial scale boy that's um that's probably why the the
01:26:13.020 crowd is screaming behind us yep absolutely things are starting to catch up again on the
01:26:17.980 betting markets we're seeing the ndp dropping from where they already were the crowd behind us is just
01:26:24.300 continues to get louder and louder um it's it's shaping up early right now shaping up early but
01:26:31.180 it is shaping up to be a great night for the conservatives this is the number is now at 53.
01:26:36.940 this is an unbelievable leap for the conservative parties and let me just say we were talking about
01:26:42.460 this with aaron gun earlier for conservatives across the country this is a meaningful moment
01:26:49.540 There has not been a change, a flip in governing parties from a left-wing party to a right-wing party since Jason Kenney was elected Premier of Alberta.
01:27:01.440 There's been a few in the Maritimes, and forgive me if you're in the Maritimes.
01:27:05.200 I think I suppose Newfoundland, PEI did it, New Brunswick too.
01:27:11.120 But in the large Western provinces, this hasn't happened.
01:27:13.960 and frankly for the conservatives in this country since trudeau got elected it's basically been l
01:27:18.520 after l after l and this is the first w that the conservatives might be posting still too early to
01:27:24.280 tell i'm gonna i'm gonna say that every time i yeah claim that the conservatives are doing well
01:27:29.640 because who knows uh like i said earlier this could we thought this could be a long night it
01:27:33.640 still could be a long night it's just that these early numbers again reminder the magic number is
01:27:38.600 47 seats look at the board on the screen right now the conservatives are leading in 53 so you
01:27:45.480 need 47 for the majority 47 is what's going to take for david eby to go home and it's looking
01:27:50.920 good we should have we should have a quick uh a quick promo to read and i think we have sheldon
01:27:58.600 claire uh an mla candidate uh on the line for an interview uh is it going to be on the on online
01:28:06.520 yeah oh awesome okay that would be great to have we're going to throw to a quick
01:28:09.480 quick ad break and then we're going to bring on a new guest to talk about what
01:28:12.520 this big blue wave in british columbia uh it means for this province
01:28:36.520 Thank you.
01:29:06.520 we're good to go all right it's not Sheldon Claire we have on but on on the line I believe
01:29:14.920 we have Harman Bangu the MLA for Langley Abbotsford we do not Harman Harman is has been a outspoken
01:29:25.420 MLA and he's frankly on the short list whether we have him or not we're gonna have our producers
01:29:31.120 Cue that up, but I want to talk about him for a second.
01:29:34.220 Harman is definitely on the short list for cabinet.
01:29:37.120 He's one of those serious MLAs that has been there for a while,
01:29:40.300 that despite all of the floor crossings and betrayals, he's kind of kept out of it.
01:29:45.920 And he aligns very closely to what I believe,
01:29:49.660 that the government should be promoting Canadian values,
01:29:53.260 that they should be focused on governing in a way that doesn't bring just like absolute broad disgrace to the province,
01:30:00.580 the way David Eby's been running this radical government it's the most
01:30:04.180 radical government that we've had since Trudeau resigned yeah and you know
01:30:08.140 frankly it's just a I would say he's a mini Trudeau but I think he's actually
01:30:11.140 taller than Trudeau David Eby but it's an absolute disaster and I'm excited to
01:30:15.640 have where we're I'm just hearing in my ear from the producers that they are
01:30:22.840 waiting on incoming results we're gonna be we're gonna talk about right now yeah
01:30:27.880 We have a guest on the line, but I want to talk about these results. 1.00
01:30:30.920 Lauren Dirksen is now posting 62 seats. 0.99
01:30:34.440 That is almost a super majority of the B.C. legislature. 1.00
01:30:39.880 This is early, as I will couch throughout the entire night.
01:30:46.980 I am excited to talk to Harmon, though.
01:30:48.960 Yeah, absolutely.
01:30:49.780 If we can prioritize Harmon over, you mentioned two guests that you have on the line.
01:30:54.260 I want to talk to Harmon because I want to see what this means for him, his riding, and I want to get a little bit of insight from him what it's been like riding this British Columbian Conservative Party roller coaster since, you know, a year ago when John Rustad was ousted in December of 2025.
01:31:14.360 Harmon Bengu has been there the entire time, so we're going to get some really good insight there, and my producers can just tell me when that is ready.
01:31:20.380 Right now, we're seeing the popular vote.
01:31:23.160 I want to talk about those numbers, too.
01:31:25.040 49% of the province right now has voted for the Conservative Party.
01:31:29.600 If everything counted, that's 41,000 votes to the NDP's 32,000 votes.
01:31:34.440 All right. We should have Herman on.
01:31:37.260 There he is.
01:31:38.140 Herman, how are you doing?
01:31:40.300 I am doing good, and everyone is excited here to get rid of this David E.D. NDP government.
01:31:47.340 Well, it looks like with polywave numbers, you are significantly leading in your riding.
01:31:54.060 I don't believe that was one that was particularly close to watch.
01:31:58.420 But at the doors, what were you hearing, not just in your riding, but across the province?
01:32:02.680 What were you hearing from British Columbia voters about the apparent want for significant change?
01:32:10.220 Even in my riding, there were scores in auction 2024 that literally told me to get off the driveway.
01:32:15.340 and now they were literally putting up signs and they're in the room tonight cheering me on and
01:32:21.140 hoping for a conservative government and i've also been going around other writings and knocking
01:32:25.440 doors there and i'm hearing the same thing over and over again we are done with the nvp we want
01:32:32.480 another government and they like the vision of warren berkson they like this 32 000 tax
01:32:37.820 extension plan it actually helps seniors people that actually work your first 32 000
01:32:43.860 and it helps households a couple like myself others would be saving two thousand dollars
01:32:49.980 per household if you work hard you get up every morning you get a break that is what I like about
01:32:56.020 Lauren Dirksen where on the other side we had David Eby and the NDP just handing out you know
01:33:01.720 free drugs whether it's that they promised a thousand dollars they didn't deliver with it but
01:33:06.200 they've constantly just handed out and that's why we're in this 14 billion dollar deficit
01:33:10.920 it that we really need to turn around this election was an expensive election and something
01:33:15.960 we've been talking about a while now that david eby could have opened up some hospital rooms uh
01:33:21.640 or or paid down the debt with this money and he could have kept his job for another two years
01:33:25.720 if you were in government and you had the money to spend where is your priority where where would
01:33:30.520 you cut where would you spend what what are you looking at when it comes to getting this fiscal
01:33:35.000 house in order for me it's getting our infrastructure our resources to market we have been
01:33:42.840 absolutely curtailed and destroyed by this ndp government whether it's forestry mining anything
01:33:49.400 you name it we have some of the most precious metals and minerals right here in bc and i know
01:33:55.000 loren gerson has a plan to get it to market and that's what's going to help us bring in that
01:33:59.320 revenue to build the hospitals to build the schools and the infrastructure that we dire we need
01:34:05.720 all right well we have some called ridings right now unsurprisingly lauren dirksen has been
01:34:13.080 re-elected in his riding we also have a few other called ridings all of the cold ridings right now
01:34:19.400 are for the conservative party carol uh no sorry that is not called yet but let me see we should
01:34:25.560 have macklin mccall has been called right now uh he is in west colonna peachland these are not
01:34:32.520 huge surprises no harrison these are rural ridings that would never have voted any other way they've
01:34:39.160 elected conservatives since time immemorial and uh and they will continue to i think so what we're
01:34:45.560 really going to be watching is when those surrey ridings get called but we do have some graphics
01:34:49.800 to show and queue up and just telling my producer right now to throw up when we do call those
01:34:54.840 writings those really big ones david evie uh when when we're calling those we want to be able to
01:35:00.120 throw them up uh but we're not calling david eby right now uh that's going to be one of the closer
01:35:04.760 ones of the night harrison and that's what i i love watching the leaders ridings because it
01:35:09.800 tells you so much if a leader gets unseated like actually christy clark who was leader of the bc
01:35:16.280 liberals back i want to say i was in high school back when this campaign was going on she was uh
01:35:22.600 she lost in her riding but her party ended up winning and forming government she needed of
01:35:27.720 course of by-election for that lauren dirksen having called his writing here today uh will
01:35:33.240 not have to do what christy clark stumbled do we still have harman on with us
01:35:39.720 um if not we can go through we can go through some of the winners that are that are penciled in
01:35:44.520 right now all right so here are here are people that have that have won their riding let's just
01:35:51.880 give you the numbers right now 10 conservatives have been elected they are the first party on
01:35:56.920 the board with guaranteed victories okay so this includes claire ratay in skeena that race has been
01:36:04.120 called uh keel giddens in prince george mckenzie that race has been called for the conservatives
01:36:11.080 rosalind bird in prince george veil mount again like you're saying these early races these are
01:36:16.520 safe conservative seats but um the numbers are starting to really fill up the races are starting
01:36:21.960 to be called in safe conservative country no one's in danger just yet we are okay we have we have
01:36:29.080 harman harman i i before we let you go because i know that you're going to have a night of
01:36:33.240 celebration i want to ask you something that every reader of juno news asks me about you guys
01:36:40.840 and it is whether or not you believe in race-based access to provincial parks
01:36:46.600 and whether drippa is going to be repealed we are definitely going to be repealed drippa lauren
01:36:53.540 dirksen has made it very clear and i believe we're all british columbians we should have access
01:37:00.740 to all british columbian public land at any time and that's what i truly feel and that's what i've
01:37:06.420 voted with and that's what i've been consistent with every single time all right well harman
01:37:12.420 thank you very much i i while you're on with us i think i have the honor of telling you which you
01:37:18.200 may have known this already but if not uh i i hope this is a great honor to let you know that
01:37:23.120 your riding has been called you have been re-elected in your riding officially thank you
01:37:28.600 congratulations congratulations i just want to i just want to take a time to give a shout out
01:37:33.800 to my good friends aaron gunn angelo isador o'connor gibson asia sd man the list is so long
01:37:41.500 that core group of conservatives that started this way four years ago with me i love each and
01:37:47.120 every one of them and i this celebration is a celebration with them and my voice goes into
01:37:52.640 the legislature so does theirs and so do the listeners thank you guys i really appreciate
01:37:57.380 that thanks for joining us harman and have a good night celebrating with your team i know it takes
01:38:01.880 a lot to get to where you are i'm gonna give my mom a big hug and my kids my family thank you guys
01:38:06.580 Cheers. We'll be watching closely to see if Harman Bengu is added to Warren Durstin.
01:38:11.580 The number is now at 70, leading for the Conservatives.
01:38:13.540 That is an impressive lead. So let's just get this straight for everyone watching.
01:38:18.180 We want to make sure the bar is at the bottom so they're all seeing what we're seeing.
01:38:21.460 70 seats are leading for the Conservative Party. That is absolutely nuts in British Columbia.
01:38:27.540 The NDP are leading in 19, but they have not called a single seat for the NDP yet.
01:38:33.180 For the Greens they are leading into, no elections have been called for the Greens.
01:38:39.920 And Dallas Brody, as we predicted, while she was leading briefly there,
01:38:43.660 while four people had voted in her riding, she's now at zero.
01:38:47.480 I am going to be fascinated to see what happens to the 1BC political momentum after tonight.
01:38:55.580 Because this, I don't know if anyone ever expected them to continue on after this election.
01:39:01.440 I think a lot of people hoped that they would.
01:39:04.620 I, as one of the most right-wing people probably in this room,
01:39:09.840 love it when there is a right-wing party holding the government to account.
01:39:13.340 I always dream about the days when I was a young guy,
01:39:17.180 I was in high school in Alberta,
01:39:18.880 and the governing PCs, which was a right-wing party,
01:39:22.500 some people disagreed with that.
01:39:24.240 I might have been one of those people.
01:39:25.940 They were being held to account by a party to the right of them,
01:39:28.780 the Wild Rose.
01:39:30.040 That was a very rare instance, and it was a good thing.
01:39:33.660 It was a good thing for Alberta.
01:39:35.340 The Wild Rose was the government in waiting, and it pulled the PCs to the right.
01:39:39.880 If the Conservative Party of British Columbia doesn't have that force to pull them to the right,
01:39:45.220 they're going to drift to the center.
01:39:46.860 And I view that, and this is something that my former boss, Ezra Levan, always used to say,
01:39:51.160 was that their job at Rebel News, and I think our job at Juno News,
01:39:55.400 and other independent outlets that don't take money from the government,
01:39:58.400 is to pull these conservative governments to the right
01:40:00.840 so that they don't drift and forget their mandate.
01:40:04.480 Because while they are clearly getting a large mandate
01:40:07.200 from British Columbians today,
01:40:08.940 they have a fiduciary duty to their party members
01:40:12.900 to hold faithful to their party policy
01:40:15.220 and to the mission that got all of these individuals
01:40:19.160 nominated in the first place.
01:40:22.360 You know, whether they follow through on that,
01:40:24.980 that is going to be the primary mission
01:40:26.460 of juno news in british columbia as i note here we are the only independent outlet in this entire
01:40:32.440 building that is going to post the next premier of this province i think it is getting safer and
01:40:37.600 safer to say that yeah uh where's the other independent where's the where's the other media
01:40:42.420 what what what is your goal as a journalist uh when it comes to holding this conservative
01:40:47.180 government to account well i think you have to have one one foot in what you would describe as
01:40:55.200 sort of the realistic mindset, okay? So the Conservative Party looks like they're going to
01:41:01.080 walk into the British Columbia legislature with a majority government. They haven't led in this
01:41:05.240 province since 1933. This is going to take time. Things in British Columbia are not going to turn
01:41:10.920 around right away. There are going to be mistakes. There are going to be slip-ups. There may in fact
01:41:15.540 be the continuance of some caucus drama. I would suspect there almost certainly will be. The
01:41:21.180 The question is, how long do you give a party that really is entering this for the first time?
01:41:27.200 How long do you give them until you try to start calling balls and strikes?
01:41:33.000 Obviously, you need to call balls and strikes right away,
01:41:34.780 but there needs to be some element to say,
01:41:38.560 look, this is going to take time.
01:41:40.220 The results aren't going to flip right overnight.
01:41:43.940 So we have Clayton Demain here.
01:41:46.480 He is our reporter that has been on the ground.
01:41:48.700 Let's pull up that chair.
01:41:49.640 Yeah, let's.
01:41:50.060 we can break the fourth wall we can bring we can bring clayton in while we're going
01:41:54.220 this is our first on location live election broadcast so i hope you guys at home are with
01:42:00.060 us i hope you appreciate that we're kind of pulling this together uh this is a first for
01:42:04.540 us and i think that you know i'm proud of the work that our team has done on the ground clayton's
01:42:08.700 right there he's going to come up here and get in the seat uh no we're getting you we want you up
01:42:14.460 here we want you to talk about you chasing down David Eby yeah just get on
01:42:20.700 up here our reporter Clayton Domain was sent here as part of our British
01:42:26.460 Columbian election coverage fund we promised our readers and our supporters
01:42:32.640 that we would have a guy coming here thanks for joining us coming here to
01:42:36.720 show the news and ask the questions that the CBC and global news would not ask
01:42:42.480 now you actually went to a press conference with David Eby you put some
01:42:47.160 questions to him I want the producers to queue that chase up we have it up we
01:42:53.220 have it online pull that up so that Clayton can sort of lead us into it what
01:42:57.040 happened that day when you chase down David Eby and you put those questions to
01:43:00.240 him well what were you asking he has two candidates that are pro defunding the
01:43:08.020 police um and i just wanted to ask him and you know he's talking in surrey which it has a lot of
01:43:14.340 it's a it's a big it's a hotbed for extortion crime uh there's a even speaking to people in surrey
01:43:20.020 there there's a a need like safety is a top issue there um so i wanted to know why why are you
01:43:27.780 supportive of candidates who are pro defunding the police when presumably you would want police
01:43:35.140 to have more resources to deal with the amount of crime in surrey um i was told i couldn't talk like
01:43:40.980 the the prep for his press person told me i can't uh ask questions juno news wasn't welcome i then
01:43:47.380 asked him those questions um and also you know like all of the crime that happened there is there
01:43:52.900 is uh several uh stabbings recently in vancouver and i wanted to ask like does he agree with his
01:44:00.100 candidates that they should send social workers instead of police you know it's a great question
01:44:06.740 it's a question that needs answers because and you know i've asked that questions to mayors in
01:44:10.840 calgary before what are they going to do if they defund the police and you mentioned that two of
01:44:15.620 their candidates supported defunding the police i have a hunch that it was more than two it was
01:44:20.060 just two that were honest and said it out loud this wildly unpopular policy can we are we prepared
01:44:25.120 to throw to this clip we're not prepared to throw to the clip i just want to say too i think
01:44:29.960 There was a lot of levels of irony with the moment because he had just criticized the conservatives of hiding from media and then he runs away from our questions.
01:44:40.960 And also the fact that the people stopping me from asking those questions were police, right?
01:44:46.560 Like I had RCMP.
01:44:47.800 Yeah, so I'm asking him, do you support defunding the police while he's surrounded by police himself, right?
01:44:53.460 I just thought that was ironic.
01:44:54.340 Police for me, but not for thee.
01:44:55.500 Yeah, right.
01:44:56.360 Police for me, but not for thee.
01:44:57.560 All right, we're going to go to the election results.
01:44:59.740 while our team gets that sorted, because I want to show the on-the-ground journalism that you're
01:45:04.200 doing. The crowd is going wild behind us, which means the results have just poured in.
01:45:10.360 All right. All right. So we're going to look at the results here. Conservatives are at 67 seats.
01:45:18.520 14 have been called for them. The NDP have now been elected in two seats. They're leading in
01:45:24.340 two dozen uh and the greens they are leading in one but not elected in any and 1bc is now leading
01:45:33.540 in their riding which riding is this that they're leading in the the in the 1bc race
01:45:39.540 i've been trying to find that it is langley willowbrook but again it's been there's been
01:45:45.140 i think three votes cast and uh and shabam joshi of 1bc is winning by one vote so again those votes
01:45:53.540 are just coming in but it's not it's it's at this point it's not enough to change the outcome of
01:46:01.060 what this race has already turned out to be this is turning out to be an absolute landslide this
01:46:06.500 is this is uh historic it in all likelihood will will lead to the first conservative government
01:46:13.220 that this province has seen all right uh so we are going to bring on sheldon uh who is he's a
01:46:22.260 guests that we have lined up on uh online play sheldon yeah hey sheldon how are you all right
01:46:29.460 sheldon you've uh you've uh you're doing well thanks great you've won your race in prince
01:46:34.740 george north caribou it was not uh one that was viewed as as a toss-up if we can put it that way
01:46:40.900 but what are your what is your reaction to the early results we have seen i mean this is turning
01:46:45.460 out to be a fantastic night for the bc conservatives well i think with the great victory comes
01:46:52.180 great responsibility i think it's important to recognize no matter what happens that there are
01:46:58.420 people out there who have differing visions of the province and i think we need to make sure we listen
01:47:03.700 to all voices when we're governing to make sure that we are moving forward with the best interest
01:47:09.060 of the province and the people in it at hand we will need to be looking very carefully at our
01:47:15.780 transition making sure lauren's got a big job in front of them to select the members of the
01:47:20.980 executive council and i'm very thrilled that the hard work that the members of our team have been
01:47:28.260 putting in over the last two years is paying off so sheldon this party was i think it will be safe
01:47:36.340 to say in disarray just a few months ago there were there was talk about whether or not this
01:47:42.340 party would would even be able to put up a serious fight in this election certainly i think at that
01:47:47.380 time no one was predicting this exact result but there is if i'm if i can say it i think there is
01:47:54.260 quite a lot of diversity of opinion in the conservative caucus you have mlas that are
01:48:00.260 being elected tonight that that were currently in in the legislature who left the party only to come
01:48:04.900 back just a couple weeks later is there any concern that this party will not be fully unified
01:48:11.460 if you are to enter the legislature with a majority government?
01:48:16.760 I think that we're going to be a pretty strong party
01:48:20.480 and a pretty strong government
01:48:22.260 if that's how the results pan out at the end of the day,
01:48:24.680 which looks like it is.
01:48:25.960 And I think that there are an awful lot of people
01:48:27.920 who realized that they needed to play well with the team.
01:48:32.680 They're back.
01:48:33.780 They're playing well with the team.
01:48:35.160 And I think that's going to continue as we move forward in governing.
01:48:39.180 Kian, you want to jump in?
01:48:40.820 Yeah, well, no, I do want to ask, and I've been asking every candidate, and congratulations, Sheldon, on tonight, the results.
01:48:47.360 Thank you.
01:48:48.940 We want to know what your thoughts are on one of the issues that are most important to our readers.
01:48:54.180 I read my, the inbox that comes into Juneau News is, the amount of emails that we get is insane,
01:49:00.520 and a lot of them are about race-based access to provincial parks in British Columbia,
01:49:06.740 something that, a policy that David Eby has pioneered.
01:49:09.480 He has made it so that only certain people in the province are allowed to go into parks depending on your ancestry.
01:49:16.160 I'm wondering if that's a priority for you to change and repeal.
01:49:19.580 Well, as you know, I was the critic for parks for a time, and it is a priority.
01:49:26.640 Parks are for everyone.
01:49:28.160 They can't be excluding people.
01:49:31.300 And I know that that's a policy that we're going to be moving forward to implement and make sure that parks are for everyone.
01:49:38.600 It's important to be respectful, but it's important to make sure that we are treating everybody in this province with respect.
01:49:47.160 Awesome. Well, Sheldon, I'm sure you have some celebrations to get to tonight.
01:49:50.660 I appreciate you taking the time to join the only independent broadcast here at the British Columbian Conservatives, Victory Night.
01:49:57.820 I shouldn't say Victory Night. It is the election night gathering until maybe a few minutes from here when we're able to officially call this.
01:50:05.240 Thank you for joining us.
01:50:05.820 Thank you.
01:50:06.120 All right, we're going to go back to the results at the bottom of the screen.
01:50:10.260 You should be able to see the total elected candidates that.
01:50:17.740 All right, let's pull Sheldon off there and get him off the Zoom call.
01:50:22.520 And we'll talk about the results that we're seeing here.
01:50:26.000 65 seats, the Conservative Party is leading in for a majority government,
01:50:29.940 which means a government that does not need the support of the Green Party to govern, basically.
01:50:37.280 That will be 47 seats.
01:50:39.920 And right now, the Conservatives have been fully elected in 21, so they're almost halfway there.
01:50:45.320 You've been here for a while now, Clayton, and I want to get everyone to speak close to the mic.
01:50:50.040 I'm hearing from some viewers that they can't hear everyone.
01:50:53.120 The room is very loud, obviously.
01:50:54.420 Celebrations are getting going, and the bars, they're not open yet,
01:50:57.780 but people are definitely using them.
01:50:59.940 Can you tell us what was the vibe on the ground when you were speaking with British Columbians?
01:51:05.480 Yeah, so there was a lot of people.
01:51:10.960 I did some street interviews last week, and there was actually a lot of people.
01:51:16.500 I was surprised because it's an urban area.
01:51:18.320 There was a lot of people who had an appetite for change, for sure.
01:51:22.260 You heard a lot of the biggest issue is affordability.
01:51:25.740 Sorry, I've got to cut you off there.
01:51:27.920 We are going to call this election. We are prepared. The PolyWave News Desk and the Juno News Decision Desk has enough information. And we are just going to speak with our producers to cue that up. They're going to give me a thumbs up here in a second once the math has all been compiled.
01:51:47.420 But what we are looking at tonight is a historic night for British Columbia,
01:51:54.600 and we are finally ready to say that Lorne Dirksen will be the next Premier of this province,
01:52:00.960 the first Conservative Premier of this province in this century.
01:52:08.320 Yes.
01:52:08.920 It is going to be a historic day of change for this province,
01:52:14.200 and we're we're ready to call that that this will be a majority government for the conservative
01:52:20.600 party of british columbia something that just six months ago was seen as an impossibility
01:52:28.360 well i would say just a month and a half ago before lord dirksen was it was a known name
01:52:35.480 i tried to ask him questions at the conference i was told that the ndp doesn't take questions from
01:52:42.200 He is now going to be the Premier of British Columbia.
01:52:45.500 Clayton, talk about just the improbable rise of this man
01:52:49.580 and this rise to power in British Columbia.
01:52:52.980 From unknown, from obscurity, he is now, in a matter of weeks,
01:52:57.780 put himself as the next Premier of this province.
01:53:00.060 I think it's a lot of people, when you have an unknown variant like that,
01:53:05.400 they attribute their own ideals of what a Conservative government could be.
01:53:11.120 And, you know, that's got to play a role in this, in his election, in this sweeping, you know, and getting rid of David Eby.
01:53:20.440 All right. So throughout the night, we are going to, we're not done here.
01:53:24.360 We've called the election for the Conservative Party of British Columbia.
01:53:27.700 But now we are going to bring guests in throughout the night who have been elected or have worked on the campaign
01:53:33.960 to get a sense of what this new government for British Columbia will be doing, what they will prioritize,
01:53:39.060 and where British Columbians can expect to see Victoria take this province over the next little while.
01:53:44.480 One of the people that I hope to speak to today is Carolyn Elliott.
01:53:49.420 Carolyn Elliott was running in this leadership race that was held.
01:53:54.500 It was kind of a meaningless leadership race in retrospect,
01:53:57.960 and she came very close to becoming leader.
01:54:00.500 She did not win, obviously, and she also ran a campaign that I disagreed with some of the things that she did,
01:54:08.440 but I was there to report on it, and I, the entire time, despite her, the EB what clip is ready,
01:54:16.980 sorry, Sean, my producers are just in the air, EB runs, all right, thanks for letting me know that,
01:54:24.320 we have a video ready to go of David EB fleeing from this young man here, he's probably twice
01:54:31.860 your height, so he shouldn't be scared, but we're going to play that clip, and I want you to talk
01:54:37.220 about it afterwards let's roll that clip this is clayton domain reporting in surrey bc behind me
01:54:42.380 is david evey's uh press bus i tried to ask him questions at the press conference i was told that
01:54:50.340 the ndp doesn't take questions from juno news i believe that a crucial role of a person who
01:54:57.800 wants to be the premier of this problem province and i hold myself to this standard
01:55:00.980 is you have to be available to answer hard questions and i have answered a lot of hard
01:55:06.760 questions in this campaign i'm committed to answering those questions to telling british
01:55:10.280 columbia's the truth about where we're uh needing to do more and how we're gonna pay for it katie
01:55:15.960 mershield they're all over twitter accounts about muslims and who believes that their uh existence
01:55:22.040 in british columbia is inconsistent with western democracy so i'm a journalist here um i'm just
01:55:27.160 asking with juno news oh yeah i know you guys uh so that you're in surrey there's a high extortion
01:55:33.400 in exterior you have candidates who are pro uh defunding platforms hate i know about you
01:55:39.160 and i'm not interested uh can you explain why you don't want to speak to juno news
01:55:44.120 okay man just give us some space that's good that's good that's good
01:55:50.040 i just wanted to know we are in surrey it's an there's high extortion crimes in surrey bc
01:55:56.200 and he's running candidates who are advocating to defund the police
01:55:59.880 So I just wanted to see if he could reconcile not giving police resources to deal with the issue.
01:56:08.160 I also asked him if he was in favor, as some of his candidates suggest, sending social workers to crime incidents.
01:56:16.300 There has been multiple, several stabbings in Vancouver this year.
01:56:22.460 And I wanted to know if he would send social workers instead of police.
01:56:25.920 David, do you support your candidates who want to defund the police?
01:56:29.880 David there's been forced uh stabbings recently in Vancouver should we send social workers
01:56:39.600 I also wanted to ask him whether or not he would deport convicted um non-citizens who are convicted
01:56:48.420 of extortion crimes uh if he was in favor of deporting them I don't think that they were
01:56:54.200 crazy questions during his press conference he actually went on about how the bc conservatives
01:57:00.520 were afraid to take questions from the media and the bc conservative leader was hiding
01:57:05.240 but it seems like it's actually david eby who's hiding from journalists
01:57:10.040 this is clayton domain reporting in surrey bc
01:57:15.240 canada can go smoke free but today access to regulated smoke-free alternatives and information
01:57:21.400 can vary depending on where someone lives. Different provincial rules create confusion
01:57:25.920 and leave openings for illicit products. When regulations don't work together,
01:57:30.300 illegal markets exploit the gaps. A coherent national framework can make expectations clearer
01:57:36.000 and help enforcement focus on compliance, underage access, and illegal trade.
01:57:40.920 Patchwork doesn't work. Learn more at unsmoke.ca.
01:57:51.400 Watch this mic cable.
01:57:53.340 Oh, yeah.
01:57:54.320 Don't want you to trip.
01:57:55.120 It's a little small.
01:57:55.920 We were kind of cornered into the smallest booth here.
01:57:58.640 Global News has a massive platform over there.
01:58:00.880 I'm not mad, though.
01:58:01.960 I'm not mad at all.
01:58:02.700 Anyways.
01:58:03.180 Thank you for joining us tonight.
01:58:04.600 Congratulations.
01:58:05.880 Thank you.
01:58:06.680 I don't think it's sunk in quite yet.
01:58:09.580 It's, yeah, I'm trying to process it, but it's overwhelming.
01:58:14.940 So you were the former president of the B.C. Conservative Party.
01:58:18.160 You've watched this party grow from obscurity into what it is now.
01:58:24.140 What is the message you can give to Canadians watching from outside of British Columbia
01:58:28.580 about what this party is, what the Conservative Party of BC represents?
01:58:32.340 How conservative is this party?
01:58:35.560 This party, you know, we started this because we wanted to give British Columbians a real option.
01:58:41.900 And five years ago, only five years ago, we did not think that the B.C. Liberal Party was doing that.
01:58:50.040 And, you know, we decided, a group of us, to take over a party that had 200 members and a beautiful name.
01:58:57.380 And I'm just, I feel very humbled to have been a part of that.
01:59:01.660 And we stuck true to our values.
01:59:03.500 And, you know, we have a very conservative caucus.
01:59:06.620 I was just speaking with Aaron Gunn earlier today.
01:59:08.560 And he said, who would you say the two most liberal caucus members were that were elected?
01:59:13.180 And I thought, I'm like, I know who those two are, and they're not going to be in this caucus.
01:59:19.000 So this is a very conservative caucus.
01:59:21.900 Conservatism can win in Canada. 1.00
01:59:24.600 And Lauren Dirksen just put on an absolute clinic on how to do it.
01:59:27.680 What do you think this result means for Pierre Polyev and the federal conservatives?
01:59:32.460 There is some issue and concern about how this might actually hurt Pierre Paglia, but do you think that?
01:59:40.740 You know, I love Pierre. I love his policies. I love what he stands for.
01:59:47.980 I have heard the criticisms that he receives, and I think that Lauren Dirksen took conservatism
01:59:54.140 and presented it to people in a way that Pierre has not done yet.
02:00:00.040 And, you know, Lauren is an extremely stable, calm, reasonable, humble, you know, strong, serious leader.
02:00:11.440 And he just showed how you can present conservatism to Canadians so that people in the middle, because we need people in the middle to vote for us.
02:00:21.760 This has been a historic moment.
02:00:24.820 You're just chatting with Harrison about this.
02:00:26.620 but when you started this party, did you think it would be this easy?
02:00:31.060 Did you think it would be this hard?
02:00:32.360 What were you expecting all those years ago?
02:00:35.140 To be completely honest, I thought that being the director on a political party
02:00:39.860 would be nice for the resume, and I was the only lawyer at the time on the board,
02:00:44.580 and so when they asked me to be president, I thought,
02:00:46.400 oh, that'll be another great addition to the resume.
02:00:49.520 Absolutely none of us saw what was to come.
02:00:52.560 None of us could have predicted it, but I'm so, so proud of the core group of us
02:00:57.260 that stuck through some extremely difficult times
02:01:00.060 and saw that we could turn this around in a moment's notice
02:01:03.160 if we were given the opportunity, and we were.
02:01:06.420 And everything, the stars aligned, and to get where we are now
02:01:10.180 has been nothing short of miraculous in the last 33 days.
02:01:14.740 Are the caucus revolts over?
02:01:18.160 Absolutely they are over.
02:01:19.520 Lauren Dirksen is the man for the moment and anybody who was to feel like they have you know 0.99
02:01:29.040 any credibility standing up against him after what he has accomplished tonight is a fool and I don't 0.99
02:01:34.080 think we have any fools in our caucus. Fair enough I mean we'll go back to the results quickly so 0.99
02:01:39.600 that we can color this in a little bit and as I'm sure you'll be interested to see 61 seats leading
02:01:44.980 That's almost a supermajority of the Victoria legislation.
02:01:49.280 Yeah, we, you know, knocking on wood every five seconds all day, you know, trying to imagine and predict what might happen tonight.
02:01:59.040 I don't think anybody said anything with a six in front of it.
02:02:02.400 So that's astonishing to see.
02:02:05.940 Again, it has not sunk in for me.
02:02:08.000 I'm just trying to absorb it.
02:02:09.940 We'll see if it holds.
02:02:11.060 well yeah that's so that's 60 wow engine just went up 63 seats a six handle is impressive uh
02:02:17.460 the 34 seats are fully called seats and in uh for the ndp they only have eight seats that are like
02:02:25.220 for sure that they are not going to lose at this point and i don't think harrison you're looking
02:02:30.340 at better data than me yeah i don't think they have not they have not called his race it is
02:02:34.660 extremely close in vancouver point gray and so obviously we're going to be watching that closely
02:02:39.860 I'm also watching Yaletown to see if there's a way to get conservatives to win in deep urban
02:02:45.380 riding. Okay, I'm glad you showed me Yaletown. That's my riding. I just moved back to Vancouver
02:02:50.600 from Victoria, and I am so proud of Margareta. That is fantastic. Wow. So what would you say
02:02:57.920 will be this conservative government's priorities? I mean, there's a lot that a majority government
02:03:04.980 can do without having to push legislation the premier if he wants to can actually just get
02:03:11.640 conservative things done right away are we going to see that absolutely we're going to repeal 1.00
02:03:16.220 right away we're going to get rid of soji right away there are there there is a plan in place
02:03:21.840 we were preparing uh for this moment and so those are two things i think that will be absolutely 1.00
02:03:27.040 top of mind and then the economy we've got to get on the economy right away we've been asking
02:03:32.860 every candidate about well actually we've been asking about race-based access to parks but i
02:03:37.180 want to ask you a little bit of a different question a lot of our viewers today are from
02:03:41.180 alberta and i want you to explain to those albertans what this change in government means for
02:03:47.500 them uh daniel smith has been negotiating a lot with uh mark carney and the tides have changed
02:03:53.580 for alberta meaningfully since trudeau is gone but david eby has represented a i don't know the
02:04:03.900 right word for it a a plug on this on this country he has he has stopped exports he has raised red
02:04:12.300 flags he has stopped development and he has crippled he has been responsible for crippling
02:04:17.420 this entire country when alberta has not been able to export their product it is because of david eby
02:04:22.940 And now that he's gone, what is going to change?
02:04:25.520 D.C. is open for business.
02:04:28.420 Canada is going to make an incredible comeback because of this victory today.
02:04:35.340 I'm extremely excited.
02:04:37.000 I have no doubt that our partners in Alberta and in Saskatchewan are going to be thrilled with this result.
02:04:44.880 and we're going to work very closely with them to have a loud voice in Ottawa
02:04:48.360 to make sure that the western part of Canada is properly represented and is prosperous
02:04:54.980 because it is the most stunning part of the country, in my humble opinion,
02:04:59.240 and we have been operating at 20% of our potential, and now we're going to go for 100.
02:05:04.380 So I couldn't be more excited.
02:05:06.420 I've heard a little bit of a rumor that Danielle Smith herself or her team
02:05:11.500 was partially involved in supporting the last-minute aspect of this campaign.
02:05:17.920 Have you heard anything about Danielle Smith's team supporting?
02:05:20.620 Has your team spoken to her and her team
02:05:24.000 and gotten any advice on what it means to be a Conservative government in Western Canada?
02:05:27.980 I know that there's been contact.
02:05:29.540 I don't know the specific details of those conversations,
02:05:32.160 but I'm sure there has been conversations in preparation for an outcome such as this.
02:05:37.140 All right. Hold your cards close to your chest. I see.
02:05:40.780 I was hoping I'd maybe get some exclusive info there, but obviously not.
02:05:45.280 We're also seeing, before we let you go,
02:05:47.240 we're seeing in Vancouver Island,
02:05:50.900 in areas that were not polling conservatives ahead,
02:05:54.820 there were some close races we were talking,
02:05:56.580 we were looking at Juan de Fuca, Malahat.
02:05:59.480 I believe Poliwave had that as NDP leaning.
02:06:02.820 So this really is conservatives picking up
02:06:05.140 where they weren't even projected to pick up.
02:06:06.780 But before we let you go, talk a little bit about this comeback out of nowhere, the fact that BC Conservatives have not led in this province since 1933.
02:06:22.400 Surely it's going to take the BC Conservatives some time to get used to governing all of a sudden. It's been quite a while.
02:06:27.800 Well, we're ready, and I can't speak highly enough about the team that's been on this campaign.
02:06:33.440 We have, without a shadow of a doubt, the strongest team in Canada in politics right now.
02:06:40.240 And we are stacked with incredible talent and brilliant people who are chomping at the bit to get to work immediately tomorrow.
02:06:48.000 I guarantee this is going to kick off right after this event tonight.
02:06:53.440 I have, yeah, no, it's pedal to the metal now.
02:06:56.420 That's great.
02:06:57.140 All right, well, let's give our audience a view of what the stage looks like.
02:07:00.380 We're not expecting any speeches coming up just yet.
02:07:03.440 but we'll give you the main feed and uh while we're looking at the crowd there that is gathering
02:07:15.760 waiting for premier designate jordan dirksen to show up and give a speech to the crowd
02:07:25.280 i want to talk about a couple of these seats that we're waiting to call we want to be able
02:07:30.320 able to put on the screen individual candidates who have won or lost. And I want to get a thumbs
02:07:36.940 up from the producer that he's hearing me, that we're going to be able to do that. When we are
02:07:42.000 able to call David Eby's seat, that's going to be flagged to me here on my desktop. And we're
02:07:48.640 going to let you know first, if this humiliation for David Eby extends to his personal writing,
02:07:56.860 That is what is left to watch here.
02:08:00.040 So David Eby's only leading is riding by 355 votes.
02:08:04.820 His lead in Vancouver Point Break has come down.
02:08:08.620 This looks like actually it could be extremely tight.
02:08:12.380 The humiliation might not be over for David Eby.
02:08:14.740 What a brutal collapse of a party that has ruled this province since John Morgan took it to power from Christy Clark.
02:08:24.560 uh this has been a catastrophic error for david edy and i i don't uh mind saying the crowd here
02:08:34.320 is louder than i've heard conservatives in a long time i mean it's it's it's an amazing victory like
02:08:41.880 we like we keep saying the conservatives haven't let in this province since 1933 it is known in
02:08:48.720 canada as canada's most left-leaning province i think it's fair to say that well not anymore
02:08:54.680 um and another point that i want to stress is this i believe for the first time i must be since
02:09:03.100 before the justin trudeau era every single premier in canada is an advocate of the oil and gas
02:09:09.480 industry there is no premier left in this country as of tonight who is opposed to pipelines as
02:09:16.440 opposed to the oil industry that is a colossal victory for every Canadian and it just can't be
02:09:22.340 overstated how serious that is because BC unlocks Pacific the Pacific for Canada to export oil
02:09:31.540 they had the tanker ban in place this is huge and if this stuff can get repealed right away
02:09:37.540 we're going to see some major improvements for every Canadian it's a win for Canadians tonight
02:09:42.240 I wonder what Mark Carney is thinking, because I was speaking with someone who understands Mark's political positioning a little bit better than the average person.
02:09:54.740 And he had two choices when he became prime minister, when it came to a legacy track for what he could do to be really remembered as a good prime minister, or at least a meaningful prime minister.
02:10:10.360 And one of those options was to go hard on the climate, to continue down the road of
02:10:16.480 Justin Trudeau, but maybe have an IQ point above room temperature while doing it.
02:10:22.200 Or he had the opportunity, the option of driving an economy that was actually functioning.
02:10:29.500 Hey, there's Aaron Gunn.
02:10:31.800 We'll have him joining us here soon.
02:10:33.880 Get me back on.
02:10:35.220 Okay, come back soon.
02:10:37.140 Aaron is already celebrating.
02:10:38.940 Yeah.
02:10:39.120 i'm not going to say with what he was celebrating but he is having a good time
02:10:43.040 uh and uh yeah so mark carney had a couple choices and one of those was to get the economy
02:10:47.440 of this country back on track and not because of anything he's done is that going to happen
02:10:52.800 it is going to be because this country has elected a sweeping conservative mandate even wab canoe who
02:10:58.960 is a a dipper not as bad as um david eby he didn't see eye to eye with david eby on on oil and gas
02:11:06.880 he's actually a proponent of the industry. As much as an NDP premier can be, he's not
02:11:12.800 shouting it from the rooftops, but he is a supporter of the Alberta oil and gas sector
02:11:18.560 to some degree more than David Eby. Now that David Eby has been blown out of the water,
02:11:26.080 this is going to change things and it's going to be good for Mark Carney. It is going to be
02:11:30.080 exceptional for Mark Carney because he doesn't have to lift a finger and all of a sudden the
02:11:34.320 pulse of this country comes back i mean look for conservatives watching across the country
02:11:40.800 we have been asking some of the guests here what this means for pierre paulia it can be tough to
02:11:47.040 see a through line and to see the connection because you look at the result today and you
02:11:51.040 go well conservatives are ascending in canada this is how could this be anything but amazing
02:11:56.320 news for conservatives but i think kian it's important to talk about what you were mentioning
02:12:01.200 before i think off air how actually this might impact pierre pauliev negatively
02:12:07.920 yeah i mean i was talking about that off air for a reason uh you know it if i was pierre i would be
02:12:15.200 it's here's the thing the math that i was talking about was that it's very difficult for a conservative
02:12:20.240 prime minister to be elected when there's conservative premiers in this country uh it
02:12:25.360 Ontario is the biggest dissuader of a complementary party.
02:12:31.760 If there's a Conservative in Toronto, there is not often a Conservative in Ottawa.
02:12:37.060 But when there's a Conservative in Toronto, a Conservative in Edmonton, Regina, and now Victoria,
02:12:44.680 there's a lot of voters, they don't see the difference.
02:12:47.040 They don't know the difference between the people who fill their potholes
02:12:50.340 versus the ones that are making Israeli policy, foreign policy.
02:12:55.960 So it's difficult for a conservative leader who's in opposition to mobilize support
02:13:02.100 when there's all of these punching bags that are taking the brunt end of a bad economy
02:13:07.680 or maybe policy errors or decisions.
02:13:11.020 Pierre Polyev has to wear that while not being in power.
02:13:14.620 He has his compatriots in power, but it makes it more difficult for him, I think.
02:13:19.980 is kind of what i was thinking uh i don't know you you tell me though well i mean first of all
02:13:26.540 among other things it's extremely hard to hear in here and so that that has been just obviously
02:13:33.660 symbolic of the vibe in this building and the feeling in this building i want us to not venture
02:13:38.940 too far away from the results yes we have a conservative majority government yes essentially
02:13:44.620 the race is called we could stop there but we're not going to we want to keep watching david eby's
02:13:50.460 riding in vancouver point gray david eby leads by only 332 votes we've seen incumbent premiers who
02:13:57.980 end up losing the race actually in vancouver point gray lose their riding this does happen
02:14:05.180 and it could very well happen tonight uh where else we're looking again we keep going back to
02:14:09.420 vancouver yaletown because of this very deep urban downtown vancouver riding who is leading there
02:14:14.780 right now margarita dovegall is leading in vancouver yaletown um the lead is very slim it's 74 votes
02:14:24.620 but again it's important to point out that we're seeing things that are really just surprising
02:14:30.700 let's look at the total count right now well we can look at the the broad popular vote which this
02:14:37.020 is this is wow this is almost 50 of the entire province of british columbia just voted for the
02:14:43.020 conservative party british columbia yeah that's impressive
02:14:49.420 all right we are our decision desk is telling us right now we have another call that we can make
02:14:55.260 the leader of the green party of british columbia has been elected in her seat she will be joining
02:15:01.660 lauren durston in the legislature along with a huge slate of conservatives there will be
02:15:06.940 green party representation including the leader of the green party
02:15:16.220 all right and with that we will be calling other ridings as they come including david eby's we're
02:15:23.180 waiting very patiently we don't want to call the wrong thing right now david eby is leading in his
02:15:29.500 riding by one percent that is not a lot folks that's about a hundred votes right now that is
02:15:35.740 separating him from alex mckillen alex mckillen is uh uh hoping to unseat the premier as lauren
02:15:43.180 thurbson just did provincially he's hoping to do that in the riding and we'll also talk uh we were
02:15:49.020 saying the popular vote uh is almost at 50 the likelihood that that crosses the 50 threshold as
02:15:56.460 as same day ballots are counted i think is pretty high because as we were remarking it was a rainy
02:16:02.700 day here in british columbia especially in the vancouver area and when the weather is bad it
02:16:08.620 does not bode well this sounds like an old wives tale but it's actually true if you're in any
02:16:12.780 campaign training you'll know that if the weather's bad people will not go out and vote for an
02:16:17.500 incumbent party government that is uninspired their motivation is very low whereas the motivation for
02:16:24.300 someone to vote in a new government is extremely high so they're willing to get their umbrella out
02:16:29.100 they're willing to get the rain jacket on and take the kids uh and go vote and that's what we've seen
02:16:33.740 the entire province of bc do here today but as we count those same day votes which are going to take
02:16:39.900 longer to get in we have the advanced polls coming in uh the same day uh same day polls will be
02:16:46.380 rolling in slowly slowly throughout the night we have just heard that carolyn elliott who's
02:16:52.060 riding i think we have already called yeah uh if not it might be close but it okay so let's just
02:16:59.340 let's i'm going back to the map here surrey conservatives are leading in uh let me see
02:17:05.100 every single surrey seat right now a clean sweep of surrey um in the tri-cities it's called again
02:17:13.180 these are viewed as bellwether ridings the race has been called conservatives are leading in all
02:17:19.180 of the tri-city bellwether ridings can we have to talk about maybe well i'll ask you this question
02:17:27.100 is this the worst political blunder that we've ever seen in canadian history david eby could
02:17:31.980 have could have been doing nothing right now he would be the premier for the following two years
02:17:37.340 he had a majority mandate what was he thinking i think this is the worst decision i've ever seen
02:17:42.460 i am absolutely disastrous and you know it's disastrous i'm hearing from a source uh very
02:17:49.660 close to the premier designate that he was just called by uh the outgoing premier david eby david
02:17:57.980 eby has conceded this election to uh to lauren dirksen who will be the next premier of this
02:18:04.380 province. I don't know what that call included. I don't know if he gave him any advice or perhaps
02:18:13.040 apologized for wasting hundreds of millions of dollars while he was begging British Columbians
02:18:19.300 to keep him on for four years instead of just continuing out his term. I wonder if he laughed
02:18:24.400 at how silly he was and the folly of his behavior. Your point about it being the biggest political 0.94
02:18:31.360 blunder in the history of this country i am struck like i'm wracking my brain trying to think of
02:18:36.880 something contemporarily that is even remotely equivalent and i can't you have to ask you know
02:18:44.880 who advised the premier that this was a good decision for him to make the lieutenant governor
02:18:51.520 didn't bail him out i mean the lg could have said no the conservatives don't have a leader
02:18:56.640 it's not the right time to call an election she didn't bail him out and help him out
02:19:00.720 they all went in on this thinking they had a shot i'm curious to know it was a short election it was
02:19:07.200 basically just over a month right at what point during that period of time did they realize this
02:19:12.880 was going to be the result of the night well it was it's one of those situations where
02:19:18.160 every press conference david eby had was disappointing their war room was almost
02:19:25.680 certainly thinking that whenever david eby's in front of a camera something is going wrong something
02:19:31.920 did go wrong and they were adjusting their messaging in a reactionary way to people saying
02:19:37.440 why are you talking about donald trump uh we do not care about donald trump uh in this election
02:19:44.160 we care about donald trump of course because we want to get our exports to market uh we want to
02:19:49.040 get our oil and gas to market there's a lot of uh natural gas in british columbia there's
02:19:53.440 forestry sector that needs help and support that donald trump has been attacking
02:19:58.400 and the answer to that the the fundamental underpinning of this election might have still
02:20:04.320 been donald trump but david eby talking about him was not helping because david eby was the person
02:20:10.160 helping donald trump the most david eby was blocking our exports for a decade david eby was
02:20:17.280 throwing the certainty of our forestry industry in british columbia into disarray so that donald
02:20:22.480 Trump could then go put tariffs on softwood lumber and we would not have the strength to
02:20:27.360 oppose them because we couldn't even harvest the forest that we are blessed with to have.
02:20:33.680 So with David Eby leaving, this is not saying that Donald Trump didn't have an impact on this
02:20:39.120 election, I think that he did, but his messaging was absolutely atrocious. His campaign team was
02:20:48.160 headed by Rachel Notley's former chief of staff actually Rachel not they there's
02:20:54.640 not a lot of NDPers so when they're facing an election they kind of export
02:20:58.660 them they won't export anything except for staffers and they sent her Cheryl 0.98
02:21:04.360 what's her name and wow what a what a disaster for her I'm gonna pull her name up 1.00
02:21:10.900 because I want to talk about it a little bit she destroyed Alberta and Cheryl 1.00
02:21:15.040 Oates is her name. Cheryl Oates took this campaign and just drove it into a ditch. It was explosive 1.00
02:21:23.980 for the NDP. And all of these staffers that are now going to lose a job, and some bureaucrats
02:21:30.860 that probably should be fired, and all these MLAs that will no longer have a job, they can look at 1.00
02:21:34.880 Cheryl Oates and say, maybe stay home next time. Maybe don't come back. Maybe don't run an election 1.00
02:21:42.220 again because it is catastrophic when you do it and when she governs it's even worse so i i think
02:21:49.540 that that's going to be a message for any ndp candidate running in this country whether it's
02:21:53.640 wad canoe stay far away from this campaign team and it shouldn't i shouldn't say it's all on
02:21:59.000 on cheryl oates it's also on david eby for calling this election but the advice that was given to him
02:22:04.880 by his close team man these guys are not the brightest bunch no i wonder what what this
02:22:13.840 what this means for the bc ndp how long they'll be in the wilderness for
02:22:18.000 uh they could potentially recover from this if things go poorly for the bc conservatives over
02:22:25.120 the next first two years i would say of this mandate but what i think at this point could
02:22:31.600 be more likely kian is that there could be with such a large majority government for the conservatives
02:22:39.280 there's an opportunity for some of the less conservative mlas elected tonight if they fall
02:22:44.880 out of favor if they if they fall in disagreement with lauren dirksen they could end up leaving and
02:22:50.160 you could see a rise of a more centrist opposition party that doesn't have the baggage of this ndp
02:22:58.000 government this outgoing government because this signals with the popular vote and everything that
02:23:03.280 it signals that british colombians are thoroughly done with the ndp they're going to be done for a
02:23:08.720 while with the ndp they may not want to go back to an ndp government yeah we i mean we asked asha
02:23:14.880 if this is going if the the caucus struggles are going to be over uh and it's it's too early to say
02:23:22.160 but one thing i'll note is that it being in government is good people really like it yeah
02:23:27.280 so the likelihood of mlas kind of pulling the pins out from underneath these guys is is unlikely but
02:23:34.320 they are there's a vast array of views in the conservative party british colombia from alia
02:23:41.920 warbus to uh to carolyn elliott and everyone in between to to harman bangu uh these guys all
02:23:51.600 disagree on a lot but what they do agree on is that the ndp uh did not deserve another term
02:23:58.640 uh what we're hearing is they they all agree that tripa should be repealed that remains to be seen
02:24:03.120 if they act on it uh and that's going to be our job at juno news is holding these guys to account
02:24:07.920 making sure that they follow through on their promises that they made to you
02:24:11.680 to uh british colombians to their party members and to all of canada really who is waiting on
02:24:17.920 this relief from david eby who act as a plug for the rest of this country uh it's been a disaster
02:24:25.040 so that's my kind of my marching orders to the team to clayton to harrison and everyone else
02:24:29.200 that works at juno news to focus on these promises that were made and make sure that they stick to
02:24:34.800 them because there's a lot of reasons why people who get into government might change their mind
02:24:40.400 we uh we're gonna throw to brad tenant here he's gonna join us in a second but first i want a quick
02:24:46.080 word from our sponsors uh they are the guys that keep our show on the road uh of course it's off
02:24:54.320 also our uh subscribers and our donors and i encourage you to go get a subscription today
02:25:00.400 i'm looking right now we have sold 10 subscriptions since this broadcast started i want to get that to
02:25:05.440 20 25 that would be awesome so that i can go back and know that this is the kind of coverage that
02:25:10.000 you guys value hearing the the stories that the mainstream media just does not want to cover
02:25:15.520 angles and opinion and analysis that you won't get anywhere else we're going to throw to our
02:25:19.760 sponsors uh they keep us going and i'm so grateful to have them their message is so important for
02:25:26.160 canadians let's go to that right now canada can go smoke free but today access to regulated smoke
02:25:32.960 free alternatives and information can vary depending on where someone lives different
02:25:37.600 provincial rules create confusion and leave openings for illicit products when regulations
02:25:42.400 don't work together illegal markets exploit the gaps a coherent national framework can make
02:25:48.320 expectations clearer and help enforcement focus on compliance underage access and illegal trade
02:25:54.240 patchwork doesn't work learn more at unsmoke.ca yeah all right um when we are back live i
02:26:05.920 We are good to go.
02:26:11.520 Okay, this is Brad Tennant.
02:26:13.500 Brad Tennant is the principal of Frontier Strategy
02:26:16.380 and a longtime friend of mine.
02:26:18.500 I'm from Alberta as well.
02:26:20.340 And you're one of those guys that when campaigns need an assassin,
02:26:24.480 they bring you on to get the job done.
02:26:27.880 I like the title assassin.
02:26:30.080 It's a first time, but I like it.
02:26:31.920 Brad Tennant, assassin.
02:26:33.660 Can you tell us what it was like to be on the ground in the war room so close to Lorne Dirksen?
02:26:38.080 I think so professional.
02:26:40.000 Like, I think, yeah, I think so professional.
02:26:43.460 Like, what I got to say is, like, hats off to everybody on the team.
02:26:47.860 David Eby called this, you know, snap election in order to try to take advantage of a party that was going through an internal struggle.
02:26:55.600 I think the team that came together there was just so professional, so focused on the goal we are seeing right now behind us.
02:27:03.780 So it was good. It was professional. It was great to be there.
02:27:08.180 But, you know, I think from beginning to the end, and the beginning was quite crazy, obviously, with everything that was happening, but professionalism was defied there.
02:27:17.940 So we heard and reported just a few moments ago that David Eby called Warren Dorkson to concede this election to him.
02:27:26.400 I'm wondering, what does a call like that consist of?
02:27:29.940 Like, I have been around some calls of, like, you know, the end of campaign and stuff going.
02:27:36.680 But, you know, usually it's quite humble.
02:27:38.880 It's quite focused on what's coming next.
02:27:41.240 And, you know, I think at the end of the day, politicians do want to do this handoff the right way.
02:27:46.080 you know props for you know I think David Eby realized it was coming quickly but I think the
02:27:52.340 fact we're getting this this early in the night shows the magnitude of Lauren's win tonight
02:27:57.120 well we did go through the results that are coming in and what we're interested in seeing now is if
02:28:04.420 the conservatives are able to squeeze out a majority of the popular vote which going into
02:28:09.360 this was that something that you guys expected was even possible I think in talking to our voters it
02:28:15.700 was clear in the last week that there was like really substantial momentum coming up so like I
02:28:23.380 was the guy kind of taking the over on where seats were going where things were we'll see
02:28:28.280 where the popular vote ends I think as a conservative coalition nationally we usually do
02:28:34.060 better on the day of vote which are kind of the last ones to come in so I'm optimistic we can get
02:28:40.120 to that number but regardless I think it speaks heavily to how well everything went for this
02:28:45.300 campaign how good things are are you know finishing up but you know successful on that end
02:28:51.820 and very happy with where it is yeah uh one riding that we are now prepared to call is dallas brody's
02:28:59.160 own riding dallas brody the leader of one bc we are now uh comfortable reporting that she has lost
02:29:07.040 she has been defeated uh and will be replaced by carson and just just for our viewers she is
02:29:14.880 actually below the center bc candidate she right now is polling uh fifth place in vancouver cochenna
02:29:24.400 this is uh well what more can you say it's obviously a terrible night um and but i don't
02:29:30.160 think anyone really thought this was possible for her to win her seat unfortunately for supporters
02:29:36.400 but what role were you seeing vote splits take play here at all obviously the one the fear of a
02:29:43.920 one bc vote split didn't materialize but what about on the other side with the green vote
02:29:49.840 with the green vote i mean i would look to see the sky right now right for that being a good
02:29:54.720 example in that conservatives are still competitive in a lot of areas that the green party is strong
02:30:00.800 just for example like uh you know what we haven't seen final numbers but in saanich uh elizabeth
02:30:06.880 may's old riding uh we're doing strong we're pulling ahead right there right now um so i think
02:30:13.360 the vote split is always something you're looking at but look you're looking to win and
02:30:17.280 the one thing i would say about carson in that riding carson binda uh like the guy's a winner
02:30:22.240 i think you're going to hear about him for quite some time uh he's a great conservative he's going
02:30:27.200 to be a great local representative and look i think that the one bc vote really falling behind
02:30:32.640 him is a testament to him and and i think you're going to see big things from him coming we were
02:30:37.920 we were watching uh west colonna uh kamloops salmon arm area where they were expected to
02:30:46.000 maybe squeeze out one of those ridings coldstream was one of them and i'm just pulling that up now
02:30:52.320 on the map it is unlikely that the uh 1bc will win that riding it's actually extremely unlikely
02:31:00.240 it's impossible now they have 11 of the vote and what's interesting is i was speaking with
02:31:05.280 with the 1BC War Room this morning.
02:31:07.800 And they said that that was one riding
02:31:09.580 that they thought, we could do this.
02:31:12.240 And right now, it is 11% to 50%.
02:31:16.080 So either their polling was off
02:31:18.740 or they were wearing rose-colored glasses.
02:31:22.300 We're going to go to Twitter, actually.
02:31:24.180 Mark Carney has just announced.
02:31:25.520 Mark Carney has tweeted his congratulations
02:31:27.920 to Lauren Dirksen.
02:31:30.440 He says, I look forward to working with you 0.92
02:31:31.900 as Premier to get more homes built,
02:31:33.500 unleash our full potential
02:31:34.460 as an energy superpower and build a stronger British Columbia and a stronger Canada for all.
02:31:39.660 He thanks Premier David Eby for the service and all we have accomplished together.
02:31:45.680 Major infrastructure projects launch, export markets unlock, jobs protected.
02:31:50.860 So, I mean, Mark Carney is continuing his language of building an energy superpower.
02:31:56.800 This was rhetoric you would never even imagine coming from the Liberal Party under Justin Trudeau.
02:32:01.560 it's obvious now the final premier who doesn't support oil and gas has now been has now fallen
02:32:07.880 it's a new country it feels like would you agree yeah and look i would just say like this is a
02:32:14.780 little bit of common sense coming back together this uh canadian's developing resource obviously
02:32:20.740 second largest country in the world um numerous resources like it shouldn't be controversial
02:32:26.800 left or right for politicians to be supportive of the resource sector um it is good to see
02:32:33.520 uh i hope this is a new normal oh we want it we want to try if we can to get david eby he is
02:32:39.640 speaking right now we're going to work with our team to see if there's any way we can go to the
02:32:44.040 cpac feed so you can listen to david eby the the the former premier of british columbia
02:32:56.800 Thank you to all of our amazing campaigns, and you worked so hard.
02:33:09.800 You have nothing.
02:33:11.800 I'm so grateful that everyone is here.
02:33:17.800 There is a staff member of the campaign.
02:33:21.800 It's looking like we might not have audio for this, so I want to just color between the lines here for people.
02:33:27.900 David Eby is not yet crying.
02:33:31.640 Whether that happens later tonight or later in this broadcast, we have yet to see.
02:33:36.540 The crowd here is booing, cheering when he concedes.
02:33:41.880 It's mixed opinions on David Eby and his concession speech here.
02:33:47.040 We're going to work on getting you the audio from the CPAC feed so you can see,
02:33:50.860 But if not, we also want to talk a little bit about some of the results in the Surrey region.
02:33:58.280 Harrison, I want to talk about Surrey and how important that was for today's victory for the Conservative Party.
02:34:04.320 They're obviously at 100% chance of forming a majority government.
02:34:08.320 Can you go through what does Surrey look like?
02:34:10.500 We said that that was going to determine this election.
02:34:13.180 Were we right?
02:34:14.380 Well, that's every BC election really does hinge on Surrey.
02:34:18.240 And for a moment there, it looked like we were going to see a clean sweep of Surrey.
02:34:22.480 Regardless, all the surrounding Surrey suburban seats, almost all of them have been called.
02:34:29.420 Surrey-Guildford, for example, this race was the subject of a judicial recount.
02:34:34.940 It was called with around 25 votes, fewer than 25 votes last election.
02:34:40.300 The Conservatives are leading by 667 in Surrey-Guildford.
02:34:44.340 and right now just behind in Surrey's city center.
02:34:50.040 But again, in almost all of the places we were told this election was going to be decided,
02:34:55.900 the Conservatives have outperformed the polling.
02:34:59.280 Yeah, look, go ahead.
02:35:00.900 No, I think that's really the story of the night.
02:35:04.120 And the Conservatives at the end of this had momentum.
02:35:07.080 They had things building towards them.
02:35:09.080 It was going quite well that way.
02:35:10.960 Surrey, just for a community, like one of the younger populations, I think, in the whole country, definitely in B.C.
02:35:18.240 This is an example of conservatives doing quite well with young voters and getting people out.
02:35:23.680 I think the campaigner in me is still following Surrey City Center most because I think we could do the sweep.
02:35:30.020 But, you know, hats off.
02:35:31.620 And I think this one, too, speaks heavily of the local campaign.
02:35:34.560 You can't underestimate that this is tough when David Eby calls a snap election.
02:35:40.480 You don't have things organized on the ground as well as you would hope.
02:35:45.540 Surrey is one of the ridings where it matters to have things develop locally
02:35:49.340 and have a good campaign, good to go.
02:35:52.280 Hats off to everybody there that was able to put this together quickly
02:35:54.980 and put together a lot of wins tonight.
02:35:58.020 All right, well, it was great chatting with you.
02:35:59.840 Thank you very much for joining us.
02:36:01.060 I appreciate it.
02:36:01.380 Thank you.
02:36:01.780 And enjoy the rest of the evening.
02:36:03.520 Congratulations on your victory.
02:36:05.160 Keep us posted.
02:36:05.880 Stay with us.
02:36:06.520 We have more interviews coming up throughout the night.
02:36:09.220 joining us shortly I believe joining us now is Anthony Koch who played a
02:36:16.300 significant role on the campaign and we're going to have him join us very
02:36:20.920 quickly here we are going to go to the pool camera
02:36:29.220 I'm sorry guys.
02:36:31.220 No.
02:36:32.220 No, no.
02:36:33.220 All right.
02:36:35.220 We're looking at the map.
02:36:49.220 And he was involved in Carolyn Elliott's campaign back during the last leadership race that just happened that turned out to be totally meaningless.
02:36:59.220 yeah it's great we were talking at the start of this broadcast how so many dominoes fell
02:37:05.380 in just the right way to make this night happen can you tell us from your perspective what happened
02:37:10.980 and is it all for the best well at the risk of sounding like a broken record david eby saw an
02:37:16.420 opportunity for himself and lauren dirksen saw an opportunity for british colombians but no
02:37:21.220 effectively what happened was it's kind of amazing because everything came together in about 48 hours
02:37:27.300 And that's from the destruction of Centre BC to the caucus choosing a new leader that's ratified by the board.
02:37:34.000 A lot of stuff happened.
02:37:35.780 And it's amazing because the NDP had complete and utter control over the entire circumstances of the election.
02:37:42.300 Yet they almost seemed like they were more surprised by the election call than we were.
02:37:47.060 But I'm calling him, you know, Lorne Dirksen is British Columbia's accidental but not so accidental premier.
02:37:53.160 Yeah. I mean, it's always the leaders that don't seek it out that turn out to be the best.
02:37:58.500 This guy's ambition was to be Speaker of the legislature.
02:38:02.160 I heard that.
02:38:03.140 He never even thought he was going to be a cabinet minister,
02:38:05.340 and now the man's going to be Premier of British Columbia.
02:38:07.480 So what does this mean for the rest of his caucus?
02:38:09.480 That all, you know, there's, I don't know if any of the other candidates
02:38:13.740 that were running for the leadership in the April election are there other than Carolyn Elliott.
02:38:18.980 Ian Black as well.
02:38:20.280 Millibar is still in there.
02:38:21.880 Millibar is in there. I forgot he ran.
02:38:23.160 Ian Black was campaign co-chair.
02:38:25.480 Okay, so did Ian secure his riding is something that I want to know.
02:38:29.180 He didn't run, but I'm saying he was campaign co-chair.
02:38:31.820 So he was involved in a non-candidate capacity.
02:38:34.440 So what I was surprised by when Lauren was kind of anointed,
02:38:39.240 that someone from every campaign, from Carolyn Elliott to Carrie Lynn Finley
02:38:44.300 to Ian Black and Peter Milibar, they had people in the war room for Lauren Dirksen.
02:38:49.160 Can you tell us about that, what it was like putting down the swords
02:38:52.200 and fighting on the same team as people that were bitter enemies?
02:38:55.540 It was a very simple question.
02:38:58.020 Aren't you tired of losing?
02:39:00.360 And wouldn't it be nice to win for a change?
02:39:02.600 And there's an understanding, you know, we've seen things in different governments,
02:39:05.480 different provinces in Canada,
02:39:07.080 where conservatives spend far more time doing internal sniping
02:39:10.900 than we do focusing on trying to defeat our ultimate enemies.
02:39:14.260 And because of the timeline, 0.81
02:39:16.280 there just wasn't enough time to get into all that garbage. 0.69
02:39:18.760 Like you said, everybody put their swords down and we said, 0.96
02:39:21.220 Do we want to beat David Eby in the NDP, yes or no?
02:39:24.160 The answer was a resounding yes, and here we are.
02:39:26.960 And let me ask you about the strategy for this campaign. 0.98
02:39:31.580 One of the NDP's line of attack was that Lauren Dirksen isn't really speaking to the media that much.
02:39:38.700 And they were saying that there was an effort to almost in a way insulate Lauren Dirksen
02:39:43.720 from some of the typical things that could bring down a very fresh candidate
02:39:48.640 who really wasn't preparing for this just a few months ago. 0.60
02:39:53.160 Was that part of the strategy to actually let David Evie do most of the talking
02:39:57.560 and let him make his own mistakes in front of the press?
02:40:01.200 Not so much. It's funny that people say this.
02:40:03.260 I mean, I can't remember the last campaign that the media didn't claim
02:40:06.140 a conservative candidate or leader was avoiding the media.
02:40:08.980 But if you look at the first two weeks in particular,
02:40:12.060 Lorne was doing 20-question press conferences, 25-question press conferences,
02:40:16.500 something that nobody does.
02:40:17.640 But this week, I believe from Tuesday to Thursday, there were no questions.
02:40:23.100 And I don't frankly think that's that big of a deal.
02:40:25.480 But I'm just curious if there was a genuine strategy to say, let David Evie do the talking here.
02:40:30.580 Because the more he talks, the more he upsets BC voters.
02:40:33.600 I can say, to the extent that we had a TSN turning point moment, it was the $10 a day daycare thing.
02:40:40.760 Not only did that come out, but then he said he gave a donation,
02:40:46.220 but he didn't want to tell us how much, he didn't want to tell us when.
02:40:49.340 And I think you could see there was clearly momentum even relatively early on,
02:40:53.040 but that was the moment, I could say, at least from the perspective of the war room,
02:40:57.740 where we really felt like, all right, guys, something's happening here.
02:41:01.260 Yeah, well, I'm happy to report Rachel Gilmore has heard the news.
02:41:06.500 Rachel Gilmore is crying right now.
02:41:08.660 I'm just looking at her Twitter.
02:41:11.380 She is, I can't even say the words on screen.
02:41:14.060 This is a family friendly stream here at TUMN News.
02:41:17.120 I encourage you to go check it out and maybe give her some condolences.
02:41:20.540 She's very concerned that orcas are going to die.
02:41:23.220 She's blaming Lauren Dirksen to be an orca murderer and she's just having a bad day.
02:41:29.420 So maybe give her some words of encouragement.
02:41:32.020 This crowd here behind me.
02:41:33.020 Do we have an official that David Eby has resigned in his speech?
02:41:36.940 We have that.
02:41:37.940 he has resigned he has resigned as leader of the ndp yeah whether he has to resign to get you that
02:41:44.820 speech we had an issue with the pool audio but we can't confirm david eb not only has been utterly
02:41:49.820 humiliated tonight but he has done the right thing in uh in in resigning okay we have pool audio back
02:41:56.960 that's good all right so when lauren dirksen arrives and he is going to address the crowd
02:42:01.180 tonight we will have that here for you on juno news do not switch away do not go to the legacy
02:42:06.300 press we have that for you when he is about to speak i'm excited to hear what lauren dirksen
02:42:11.240 has to say i'm also excited to start understanding what he expects his cabinet to look like we have
02:42:17.800 the list of people who have won obviously your friend and uh carolyn elliott has won her riding
02:42:23.540 we hope to have her join our broadcast here shortly do you expect her to be in cabinet
02:42:27.880 listen obviously it's a decision that lauren's gonna make but uh i think we got a lot of very
02:42:34.040 strong candidates for cabinet i think we're comparing the difference between 2024 to 2026
02:42:40.600 we got a lot of really strong cabinet quality people this time around i think caroline's
02:42:45.640 among them and i think especially when our voters are looking for us to get rid of drippa
02:42:51.240 i think she'd definitely have a potential role in leading that or being a part of that
02:42:55.080 all right all right anthony we are going to go to the stage now where uh we believe it's
02:43:00.040 Morrow Francis addressing the crowd. Anthony, thank you for joining us.
02:43:05.000 Not long ago, this party was on the outside of politics.
02:43:08.840 Two percent in the polls, written off by the pundits, ignored by the media.
02:43:14.440 Then, in just a few short years, we became the official opposition.
02:43:20.600 And now we stand on the verge of forming government. We have formed government.
02:43:30.040 In late September, in our moment of fracture, David Eby saw an opportunity for himself and
02:43:38.400 called a cynical snap election.
02:43:41.560 But here's where he made his mistake.
02:43:44.240 In presenting BC with his selfish ambitions, he brought us all together against him.
02:43:50.640 In just a matter of weeks, our party has not only put itself back together, but has unified
02:43:55.500 stronger than ever before.
02:43:58.760 None of this would have been possible without the people in this room.
02:44:07.060 The late nights, the early mornings, every sign put up, every rat card delivered, every
02:44:12.420 door knocked and every phone call made.
02:44:16.740 To the campaigners on the ground, the volunteers who gave up their evenings and weekends and
02:44:21.240 everyone who stepped up when this party needed them the most, this campaign is yours as much
02:44:27.420 as anyone's Lauren Dirksen was unanimously chosen by both our caucus and
02:44:38.580 board to be our leader and I can confidently say that this man has risen
02:44:47.460 to the occasion in every conceivable way and now Lauren has been chosen by
02:44:54.180 British Columbia. Early in this campaign we learned about the kind of man Lauren
02:45:02.700 is. He is honest, he is hard-working, he is the kind of leader who puts out a fire
02:45:09.660 when he sees one. He is what British Columbia needs. Whether it's affordability
02:45:19.620 or the need to supercharge our economy Lauren has given British Columbians a
02:45:24.060 vision for strong leadership in serious times. Now before I introduce Lauren on 0.56
02:45:30.980 stage I'd like to present you all with a special video on behalf of our
02:45:34.020 Conservative family.
02:45:49.620 One hot angel
02:46:07.060 One cool devil
02:46:11.160 Your mind on the fantasy
02:46:15.300 Living on the ecstasy
02:46:19.320 Give it all, give it, give it what you've got
02:46:23.080 Come on, give it all the love
02:46:27.140 Pick it up and move it, give it to respect
02:46:31.140 Your mind's time to see, give it all ecstasy
02:46:37.460 Run away train, run away, run away, run away
02:46:43.100 Run away train, run away, run away
02:46:49.320 Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great honour that I introduce to you for the first time in nearly a century, your next Conservative Premier, Lorne Dirksen!
02:47:19.320 If you wake up, don't smile
02:47:31.720 If it takes just a little while
02:47:35.360 Open your eyes, look at the day
02:47:39.700 You'll see things in a different way
02:47:43.960 Don't stop thinking about tomorrow
02:47:48.280 Oh, don't stop, it'll seem to be here
02:47:52.420 It'll be here, better than before
02:47:56.040 Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone
02:48:00.340 When I think about times to come
02:48:12.300 I'm not about the things that you've done
02:48:16.300 If your life was bad for you
02:48:20.380 Just think what tomorrow will do
02:48:24.580 Don't stop thinking about tomorrow
02:48:28.700 Don't stop in sleep
02:48:32.120 In me
02:48:34.420 Better than before
02:48:36.400 Yesterday's gone
02:48:38.440 Yesterday's gone
02:48:46.300 All I want is to see you smile
02:49:08.940 If it takes just a little while
02:49:12.400 I know you don't believe that it's true
02:49:16.980 I've never made any harm to you
02:49:21.120 Don't stop thinking about tomorrow
02:49:25.200 Don't stop, it'll soon be here
02:49:29.700 It'll be better than before
02:49:32.940 Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone
02:49:37.200 Don't stop thinking about tomorrow
02:49:41.320 Don't stop, it will soon be here
02:49:45.300 It'll be better than before
02:49:48.940 Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone
02:49:53.240 Ooh, don't you look back
02:49:59.220 Ooh, don't you look back
02:50:07.340 Ooh, don't you look bad
02:50:15.160 Ooh, don't you look bad
02:50:37.320 If you wake up, don't smile If it takes just a little while
02:50:43.680 Open your eyes, look at the day You'll see things in a different way
02:50:52.300 Don't stop thinking about tomorrow Don't stop, you'll see me here
02:51:00.880 In a feeling better than before
02:51:04.420 Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone
02:51:08.700 When you think about the times to come
02:51:20.580 And about the things that you've done
02:51:24.640 If your life was bad for you
02:51:28.740 Just think what tomorrow will do
02:51:32.900 Oh my God. 0.88
02:51:45.040 B.C. is definitely blue.
02:51:53.580 Oh my goodness.
02:51:55.880 Thank you so much, everyone.
02:51:58.100 we are so glad that you're here thank you to everyone in this room and of course
02:52:05.140 everyone watching at home what a night this is together we
02:52:14.180 man i am out of breath i am so excited together we seized this opportunity you guys and together
02:52:22.100 we voted for a better british columbia
02:52:28.100 And from here I will do everything in my power to get British Columbia back on track.
02:52:34.820 To our volunteers, you knocked on doors, rain and shine. You did so much incredible work. You put up
02:52:44.100 signs. You made the calls. None of this would have been possible without your hard work.
02:52:50.500 And to every candidate that put their name on a ballot and to everyone who voted tonight,
02:52:55.780 including those who voted for someone else. Thank you so very much.
02:53:07.540 I want to take a real quick minute just to introduce my family of course. I've got a
02:53:12.500 stepson Bryce here, my wife Shelly, my mom who is so proud and happy right now.
02:53:19.460 Her name is Bev everybody and she is so happy. Of course my beautiful daughters Miranda and
02:53:29.360 Shelby my granddaughter my stepson Damien we are so glad to be here but I also want to thank my
02:53:36.320 team at home because they have done an unbelievable job and I will say this Caribou Chilcotin is
02:53:43.340 amazing. My campaign team there of course was Donna Barnett, many will know her.
02:53:53.480 She is like a mom to me and I'm so grateful for her co-captaining the team
02:53:59.860 with Brian Withage, Carrie Siebert who did an amazing job of our fundraising, but
02:54:05.340 I also wanted to thank a few people in the room, Robin Angelina Bennett, Scott
02:54:10.460 tucker kane fraser scott and twyla i don't know who else is out there but thank you caribou chocotin
02:54:24.460 i promise you i'm going to work as hard as all of those volunteers did i want to recognize david
02:54:31.980 eby tonight public life asks a lot of us all it asks a lot of a person and a lot of their family
02:54:38.860 and he has given to this province for years of both of those things so thank
02:54:43.540 you very much David Eby. I also want to recognize Emily Lowen and congratulate
02:54:52.720 her on an incredible campaign. British Columbians can be grateful for her 0.66
02:54:57.400 passion, all that she's done to inspire thousands of young British Columbians to
02:55:02.260 get involved so thank you Emily.
02:55:08.860 Listen guys, as most of you know, I'm a guy from Williams Lake.
02:55:16.780 I was young, I love Caribou Chilcotin so much.
02:55:24.720 I was actually born in New Westminster, I grew up in Surrey, and I went to Bridgeview
02:55:29.780 Elementary.
02:55:30.780 Then we moved north and I stayed, and for 20 years I ran newspapers.
02:55:35.860 That was a very good education for me.
02:55:39.440 You learn what's really going on in a town who's hiring, who's closing, who's hoping.
02:55:44.340 And I've been of course the president of the Rotary Club and vice president of the Stampede.
02:55:48.800 I have watched a lot of people get thrown at a rodeo.
02:55:53.460 And I'll say I've been thrown a few times myself.
02:55:56.900 But what I've learned, what I have learned from that is that the bruises is that you
02:56:03.360 You pick up yourself, dust yourself off and you get back on.
02:56:11.740 And the crowd gets to its feet for you because you're trying.
02:56:18.680 That is the approach that I have brought to my political life and as communities throughout
02:56:22.920 my riding have fought fires and floods, I have stayed with my neighbours and pitched
02:56:27.860 in where I could.
02:56:29.560 That taught me what strong leadership for serious times really means.
02:56:37.720 It isn't loud, it's showing up, it's telling people the truth, it's keeping the promises
02:56:45.000 that you have made, and it's owning it when you get something wrong and getting back to
02:56:51.360 work.
02:56:52.960 Oh my God, I am so glad to see you guys tonight.
02:56:59.920 I'm going to shake every hand in the room if it takes me all night.
02:57:04.020 It taught me something else as well.
02:57:06.720 A province only works if all of it works, you guys.
02:57:14.200 For a very long time, a lot of British Columbians have felt like Victoria forgot about them,
02:57:20.180 like the map maybe stopped at Hope.
02:57:22.760 tonight the whole map counts for British Columbia. I believe in British Columbia
02:57:31.820 and I believe in all of it and I've seen all of it. I've spent the better part of
02:57:36.860 my life working and traveling to all corners of our beautiful province, 100
02:57:41.900 Mile House and Williams Lake of course, Surrey and Maple Ridge, Chilliwack and
02:57:46.040 Kelowna, Saanich, Souk and Langford, Richmond and Vancouver. I have had a lot
02:57:52.280 of coffee in the last couple weeks. Frankly, I've had quite a bit tonight, but British Columbians are 1.00
02:57:59.400 hard-working, trailblazing people. They want a fair shot at building something in this province.
02:58:10.920 And that is the oldest story in this province. First Nations built lives and nations here for
02:58:19.160 thousands of years and then came people who walked into the caribou with the clothes on their back
02:58:25.880 and a dream. They carved a wagon road up the Fraser Canyon to get to the gold and plenty of them
02:58:33.640 went broke. Plenty of those camps are ghost towns today but they went anyway for a chance
02:58:40.200 to build something amazing. That is the trailblazing spirit of British Columbia and it never
02:58:48.680 left. It just needs government that's on its side and together and together our
02:59:03.320 best days are still ahead of us my friends. I promise you that. So when I
02:59:09.980 say that we are going to supercharge British Columbia, I want you to know
02:59:16.280 where it happens. It isn't. It isn't going to happen on one street or in one
02:59:26.240 city. It happens in Kitimat where BC natural gas leaves to power the world.
02:59:32.120 It happens in Fort St. John where the gas comes out of the ground. In Prince
02:59:38.120 George, Quennell and Williams Lake where a mill job should still pay a family
02:59:43.520 nicely in Kelowna in Kelowna and the Okanagan where orchards run right up
02:59:53.180 against the tech companies you guys up and down Vancouver Island where the
02:59:58.460 fishing boats still go out before the Sun comes up and in the Kootenays where
03:00:03.200 they've been smelting metal in trail for more than a century in Surrey on its way
03:00:10.020 to becoming the biggest city in our province. And yes in Vancouver where the
03:00:19.460 ideas and the head offices are. Every one of those places is part of the same
03:00:26.020 engine. A mill running in Quenelle keeps the trucker working in Surrey. A mine
03:00:31.360 opening in the north keeps a port busy in Delta. It's one economy and it runs
03:00:37.140 runs through every town on our map in British Columbia.
03:00:45.040 That is what a BC that works for everyone means.
03:00:48.900 We will be the catalyst, I promise you that.
03:00:51.800 But you are the engine.
03:00:54.920 So what do I believe in?
03:00:57.980 Well, I'll tell you, it's simple for me.
03:01:00.500 Plain and simple, I believe in bringing investment back to British Columbia.
03:01:07.140 And we will host a business summit next year in Vancouver that will be the envy of the
03:01:13.540 world.
03:01:14.540 We will welcome capital back to our province.
03:01:18.820 You can plan around a no, but you can't plan around a maybe.
03:01:23.720 I believe in cutting red tape.
03:01:26.080 I believe in energy.
03:01:27.940 We will double, yes, we will cut red tape like it's never been cut before.
03:01:36.820 We will double natural gas production by 2032 and triple it by 2035.
03:01:45.140 Folks, that is tens of thousands of jobs in our province and at least $6 billion a year
03:01:54.200 for hospitals and schools that we all depend on.
03:01:58.020 I believe in the people who build, dig and grow more fibre on the trucks, permits in
03:02:06.780 months instead of years and backing for exploration that finds the next mine in our province.
03:02:21.120 I believe in building the ports and the rail that get it all to market and the power to
03:02:27.260 run a new plant without years of waiting for grid connection. Technology that keeps
03:02:33.500 species ideas and jobs right here. I believe in our young people and their futures being
03:02:39.900 right here in our province and I believe absolutely and I believe in you keeping more of what you earn.
03:02:50.860 A $1,000 tax cut is just the start with no new taxes in British Columbia.
03:03:05.800 I believe in health care that is fully and publicly funded.
03:03:10.460 I believe in rural ERs and maternity wards that are actually open.
03:03:16.820 And I believe, yes, I believe in getting British Columbians the family doctors that they need
03:03:24.280 and the hospitals that are safe for our doctors and our nurses who work in them.
03:03:30.920 And I believe in public safety that protects our communities, makes sure criminals stay
03:03:36.380 behind bars and that those who need treatment actually get healthy in British Columbia.
03:03:44.500 I also believe in the protection of private property rights and that British Columbia
03:03:59.500 and British Columbia where parks are open to all British Columbians.
03:04:08.500 And I believe that we must pay in the right way, careful with your money and growing our
03:04:15.080 economy so that careful is actually enough.
03:04:18.940 Because when a province believes in itself, things start to move in British Columbia.
03:04:28.480 Put it all together and here's what I want, a British Columbia that is the most prosperous
03:04:35.540 province in this country. The place where investment goes first and the place the
03:04:43.760 best people choose to build their lives. I want BC where a hard day's work gets
03:04:50.600 you a family home and a future right here in this beautiful province. I want
03:04:59.120 to say a word to the people who aren't in this room. There is a place for your
03:05:04.760 there is a place for you here. Bring your ideas, bring your family, bring your
03:05:12.080 ambitions and somebody will pick up the phone in British Columbia. And to the
03:05:16.880 business owner, to the business owner that is thinking about taking what they
03:05:23.140 have built somewhere else in this country, I am begging you to stay because
03:05:28.920 there are incredible times. Grow it here we are going to make it worth your while I promise
03:05:37.100 you that and to the young people of our beautiful province I am telling you to stay. This is
03:05:43.980 your home and I want you to have your best days to happen here close to your parents
03:05:50.080 and your friends in the town that you grew up in in a place that you can afford. I promise
03:05:56.420 to work for this and for you every single day.
03:06:00.480 And to our First Nations, and to our First Nations, this future is one that we will build
03:06:07.660 together as partners with the certainty all of us need.
03:06:13.180 Folks, a baby was born in this province tonight, maybe in Surrey, maybe in Williams Lake or
03:06:22.220 Prince George, Penticton or Port Hardy. But in 2036 that child turns 10 and I
03:06:29.360 want our sons and daughters to grow up in a B.C. that is the envy of the world.
03:06:36.640 Where their parents can afford a home. Where they don't have to leave town to
03:06:42.620 get ahead. Those trailblazers who walked into the caribou didn't have a road map.
03:06:47.780 they had hope. And that is exactly what we all need right now, is hope.
03:06:59.180 Tonight British Columbia made a choice and it is going to be the honour of my
03:07:05.900 lifetime to serve you as your Premier.
03:07:17.780 And I am going to give this job everything that I've got, I promise you that.
03:07:46.460 And I also promise you that I won't get it all perfect.
03:07:50.880 But when I don't, I'm going to tell you, and then I'll get back to work.
03:07:55.200 We've got a province to build, and I can't think of better people to build it with than
03:07:59.380 you.
03:08:00.380 This is strong leadership for serious times.
03:08:03.600 Let's do this, British Columbia!
03:08:10.440 We are going to get to work unlocking the endless possibilities of our province and
03:08:16.220 our people and in every corner of it I am ready to deliver for all British Columbians.
03:08:23.220 Thank you and God bless.
03:08:24.560 I want to shake every hand in the room.
03:08:40.440 If you wake up, don't smile, if it takes just a little ride, open your eyes, look at the
03:08:52.440 day, you'll see things in the middle of the day, come on up, come on up, come on up.
03:08:59.440 Come on up, Caribou, Joe, Colton, come on up, Scotty, Twyla.
03:09:07.440 That's us, folks. This is my family and friends from Williams Lake and Caribou.
03:09:13.260 Come on up. We love you guys, British Columbia.
03:09:37.440 Don't stop, you're looking like tomorrow
03:09:41.940 Don't stop, you're so real
03:09:45.520 You're in the year, you're better than before
03:09:49.640 Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone
03:10:07.440 I spoke to the leader of the Conservative Party, Mr. Dirksen, and acknowledged his
03:10:34.120 a success in electing majority government tonight.
03:10:37.720 I wished him the best, and quite sincerely,
03:10:41.920 this is an important time, this is a critical time
03:10:44.120 for our province and for our country,
03:10:46.860 and I hope for all British Columbians
03:10:49.540 that he protects British Columbians, looks after us,
03:10:53.600 and looks after the province.
03:10:56.580 The people of British Columbia have asked us
03:10:57.980 to be the official opposition,
03:11:00.480 which is obviously not the result that any of us wanted.
03:11:05.120 A number of my colleagues,
03:11:07.800 some of the hardest working MLAs I know
03:11:09.720 for their communities were not elected tonight.
03:11:12.780 It breaks my heart and I accept full responsibility
03:11:16.800 for that outcome.
03:11:21.200 As I was driving here in the car with my family,
03:11:24.120 with Kaylee,
03:11:25.180 We drove past the Broadway subway under construction.
03:11:32.180 We drove past the Sanoc housing development,
03:11:36.180 massive rental housing development
03:11:38.180 by the Squamish First Nation on land
03:11:40.180 that had been taken from them that they now own.
03:11:44.180 Past the new Henry Hudson School,
03:11:47.180 one of 250 schools that we opened across the province.
03:11:55.180 I drove past the old St. Paul's Hospital, they have a big sign out front about the new
03:12:06.280 St. Paul's Hospital and the amazing research building that will be there to provide cutting
03:12:11.240 edge life-saving medicine to British Columbians.
03:12:16.060 I thought about the million British Columbians that now have a family doctor who didn't before
03:12:20.860 about rents dropping 24 months in a month.
03:12:27.760 And importantly, we drove past so many little stores where people are working for minimum
03:12:33.200 wage and I reflected on the fact that when we started this journey, we had the lowest
03:12:37.520 minimum wage in the country and now we have the highest wage.
03:12:42.440 This was a 15 minute drive in one city in British Columbia.
03:12:54.440 We did this in every corner of British Columbia as government and we should all be proud of that.
03:13:06.440 It has been the honor of my life to serve as Premier of British Columbia, to serve as MLA,
03:13:11.440 to work with all of you I I can't think of any better group of people to work
03:13:20.320 with to serve the NDP a social movement that finds its roots in the prairies or
03:13:26.860 people just agree that working together was the best way to get forward you in
03:13:33.700 this room my colleagues in government our staff our team our volunteers the
03:13:40.520 party. You're the best and I am forever in debt to you for this opportunity that
03:13:47.660 you gave me. I am sad to say but I simultaneously do find some silver
03:13:57.280 linings I'll talk about in a second. Sad to say that I'll be offering my
03:14:01.100 resignation as premier obviously but but just as importantly as the leader of the
03:14:09.500 BC NDP. This is obviously something I do with a very heavy heart but it is time
03:14:18.120 for new leadership within our party and also I take some comfort from the fact
03:14:23.740 that my family that has stood by me through our first run, Kales was 15 years
03:14:29.900 ago, 2011, and it has been a wild ride but my family has paid a very significant
03:14:36.620 cost for this work and and I am keen to spend some time with my kids with my wife
03:14:42.460 with our friends and not worry if someone is videotaping me while I am
03:14:47.580 singing karaoke. Thank you friends for everything I hope you're able to
03:14:55.520 celebrate some victories tonight some new leaders who are stepping forward who
03:15:00.060 have been elected thank you for all you do I am so grateful and I will never be
03:15:05.060 able to repay.
03:15:06.880 Kales, I love you. 0.97
03:15:08.620 Let's go home.
03:15:10.400 Thanks, everybody.
03:15:21.920 ...victory for the first time for a conservative premier.
03:15:25.300 Christy Clark obviously was a liberal, and there were many liberal premiers, but there
03:15:29.140 has not been a conservative premier in a very long time.
03:15:32.560 That changes tonight for British Columbia.
03:15:34.380 What were your takeaways from that speech, Harrison?
03:15:37.800 You were saying right after it ended, you were laughing.
03:15:40.200 You were almost in tears saying how hilariously normal this guy is.
03:15:44.760 Well, okay, so that's, I think, the immediate reaction,
03:15:48.540 the first impression that Lauren Dirksen gives off
03:15:50.800 is that this guy doesn't ooze political charisma.
03:15:56.660 It doesn't shine through on him the way it does for other politicians.
03:16:00.900 He never intended to be premier.
03:16:02.300 a month ago he was on a flight home and he didn't even realize that his caucus colleagues appointed
03:16:08.420 him to be the interim leader so imagine what's going through his mind right now i imagine at
03:16:13.360 one point on that stage it clued into him that he is now the premier of british columbia this is
03:16:19.140 real life this is happening um i think you got in that speech what you could describe as a pretty
03:16:27.340 typical conservative speech there was nothing extremely based if we can say uh i don't think
03:16:34.540 i heard a lot of the extremely animating issues it was a lot about building pipelines cutting taxes
03:16:43.100 getting a getting rid of the bureaucracy there was nothing controversial about that speech
03:16:47.340 which I think with this kind of mandate, Dorkson is almost obligated to execute on some of the
03:16:56.700 major animating issues that he can change with a stroke of a pen now. That is Drippa. That is
03:17:03.880 Soji. These are the big issues in British Columbia. Let's be honest, taxes are not animating British
03:17:09.520 Columbians right now. I just don't believe they are. It's all the other stuff that is the big
03:17:14.200 ticket issue so he's got to do it right now well he talked about private property rights he did he
03:17:19.640 talked about uh everything that we you know we are going to have to hold him to account on
03:17:26.040 over the next little while because there is a tendency for these guys to win and then uh
03:17:34.440 they they drift to the center and they they fade and they collapse on their promises i don't know
03:17:39.160 i'm not saying that's what they'll do but conservatives just have an awful tendency of
03:17:43.080 doing that uh daniel smith has been one of those that has not done that uh which has been refreshing
03:17:48.360 but it is all too easy especially in a province like bc where maybe this mandate is seen as sort
03:17:53.080 of temporary maybe even accidental um because you know lauren is not the most polished guy
03:17:59.320 and some people like that i mean a lot of people like that he's very similar to scott moe in that
03:18:03.080 regard but he's not um he didn't have a strong ideological brand people don't know who he is
03:18:09.720 really uh and over time they'll get to know him hopefully they like him if you're him uh but they
03:18:15.240 might not uh and we could be back at the polls in four years thinking this was a one and done thing
03:18:20.600 and and we it should have been obvious at this point but maybe you know it's he has four long
03:18:25.960 years maybe short years just depending on your perspective to get some work done for british
03:18:30.920 colombians and for all of canada who are putting their hopes in uh lauren dirksen and bc to make
03:18:38.360 this country work i say this as an albertian who just got through a referendum where i voted option
03:18:43.960 two to look at a new referendum to to have alberta leave the country if i knew that this was going to
03:18:49.640 be the result maybe i i wouldn't have done that if i knew that we were going to have an ally to
03:18:55.240 the west instead of someone a shadow of trudeau you know maybe maybe there's some hope i think
03:19:03.560 that that should be the takeaway here that british columbia really is the final lock i believe to
03:19:13.880 really bringing us prosperity we haven't seen in a long time bc in the hands of the ndp was able
03:19:20.120 to completely shut down a lot of oil and gas exports they they were basically the ideological
03:19:28.440 bed of some of the most radical policies we've ever seen on a night like tonight i also want to
03:19:36.640 think about the amount of suffering that has taken place in this province
03:19:41.040 it you cannot go too far in vancouver without seeing the the the pain and suffering of addiction
03:19:48.740 policies absolutely insane addiction policies that have taken the lives of thousands of young
03:19:56.720 british colombians who were not given or not did not have a government that was willing to actually
03:20:03.280 make the decisions that could have kept them alive tonight there are families of those people who
03:20:09.200 who died because of the drug crisis and honestly you can't blame it all on the on the provincial
03:20:14.240 government but when you have policies like decriminalization destroying british colombian
03:20:20.480 streets i mean this this this closes a chapter a very dark chapter in british columbia's history i
03:20:27.840 hope like david eby was one of the most disastrous people to run this province and he was so
03:20:35.840 violently ideological about his his approach to government uh he he hate you know when a lot of
03:20:43.840 of people in Alberta in the independence movement talked about how Canada left them, how Alberta
03:20:50.680 doesn't hate Canada, it hates what Canada's turned into and evolved into. And David Eby was the
03:20:56.640 person dragging this country by the throat by creating race-based access to parks, by handing
03:21:04.220 drugs out to people and eventually those drugs got into the hands of children. David Eby across
03:21:12.100 the board failed on every single policy matter uh i i note today during his farewell speech
03:21:20.180 he didn't even have a poppy on it which just a week less than a week since four canadian
03:21:29.060 soldiers died in cfb wainwright and today being the official day to start wearing them it really
03:21:35.940 illustrates the hatred and contempt that he has for this country one thing that i think we should
03:21:45.140 mention here is that by the time premier designate dirksen took the stage it was 9 45 p.m so that's
03:21:54.020 an hour and 45 minutes after the polls closed by that point we had already gotten the full picture
03:21:59.780 of how the night was going to go david eby had called lauren dirksen i want to say maybe an hour
03:22:06.580 after polls closed maybe not even i mean this has happened so fast the change that has taken place
03:22:13.220 tonight has happened so quickly 2024 was extremely close the ndp had a one-seat majority we talked
03:22:20.260 all night tonight about how there were several seats that had to go to judicial recounts with
03:22:25.140 with vote counts and leads of 25 votes in some places not tonight this was an absolute drumming
03:22:33.220 of the highest order and it was all wrapped up extremely quickly i want to i want to talk a
03:22:38.660 little bit about the juno news team uh that was here helping get the story out about what david
03:22:44.820 eby was who his team was clayton domain was instrumental in that i remember when i was a
03:22:49.780 younger journalist working uh it was me doing that i'm glad we have a big team so it's not all
03:22:55.780 on one person now and really he stood out and really showed us what journalists journalists
03:23:00.900 should be and can do uh the video that he produced of david eb fleeing from his questions
03:23:07.140 reminded me of myself a long time ago chasing after justin trudeau back in those days uh and
03:23:13.300 i want to talk to our viewers today directly about what it takes to do that you've seen
03:23:19.220 sponsorships from some of our sponsors here today some of you most of you I
03:23:24.320 think watching our subscribers to us whether you're free or paid if you are a
03:23:29.480 paid subscriber to Juno news you get access to every single story we produce
03:23:33.920 the documentaries the live streams the analysis our polling that we do and it
03:23:40.640 helps us hire people like Clayton and get them on the ground hire the
03:23:45.380 producers that are right in front of me right now there's three of them doing
03:23:48.140 great work getting this live stream to you and it all really is underpinned by our supporters
03:23:54.860 and I want to give you right now a way that you can support this journalism and the next broadcast
03:24:01.280 that we do and the next story that we do the next investigation that we do wherever it is and
03:24:07.020 whatever it's into it's not always political sometimes it is it's about you know immigration
03:24:14.880 or corruption or crime, whatever it is,
03:24:18.240 Juno News is covering the story that the mainstream media
03:24:20.560 either has a warped angle on or is just outright lying about.
03:24:24.800 And you can go to supportjuno.com.
03:24:29.380 Go to that URL, type it in your browser, go to it,
03:24:33.920 and if you can start a recurring donation,
03:24:36.700 a monthly donation to our work,
03:24:38.400 that gives us the confidence that we need to hire more journalists.
03:24:41.640 We are hiring more journalists than any newsroom in this country right now.
03:24:44.600 While the Global News and CBC and Chorus Radio and all these guys are laying people off and sending journalists home and instead relying on AI to write their articles, we are hiring people.
03:24:56.460 We are growing our newsroom and we are not counting on ChatGPT to give you the news that you need.
03:25:03.100 We have real people right here in front of cameras sharing interviews that are meaningful, sharing investigations that are meaningful, and that all is underpinned by your support.
03:25:13.500 If you go to supportjuno.com, you can support our independent journalism fund.
03:25:19.580 And that has over 3,000 donations on that fund right now of Canadians across this country
03:25:24.760 supporting the work that we do, that Candice Malcolm, myself, Harrison Faulkner, Melanie
03:25:30.000 Bennett, Clayton Domain, and every other journalist that we have.
03:25:34.480 Our newsroom is too long to list.
03:25:37.020 If you go to supportjuno.com, that would mean the world to me.
03:25:42.260 Go to JunoNews.com and take out a subscription if you don't have one, my goodness.
03:25:46.560 You're missing out on some of the most important investigative journalism in the country right now.
03:25:52.440 The work that Melanie is doing in particular when it comes to the foreign student file is fascinating work.
03:26:00.720 It's actually getting us into some, maybe I shouldn't ad lib, our current litigation situation.
03:26:11.080 You should look into what's going on, go to a courthouse and pull up the statement of claim made against us.
03:26:16.840 It is absolutely outrageous how we are being punished by people outside of this country for giving you truthful, honest journalism.
03:26:25.280 Right behind us as we speak is Premier Designate Lauren Dirksen.
03:26:33.440 Just a remarkable, remarkable political moment.
03:26:37.460 I'm not sure anything like this has happened in Canadian history
03:26:40.220 where someone who at the time would maybe be one of the last choices
03:26:46.840 to become Premier has been thrust into this position.
03:26:52.740 I mean, the work has to get started right away,
03:26:55.840 but it really is a remarkable story.
03:26:59.000 Absolutely.
03:26:59.980 We're going to hope to have Carolyn Elliott on in a little bit. 1.00
03:27:04.720 We have a chair here waiting for her.
03:27:05.980 I really want to talk to her. It'll be my first time talking with Carolyn Elliott since the last leadership race.
03:27:11.960 And I have some questions for her.
03:27:14.640 They will be informed mostly by the results of tonight and where she hopes to take this province.
03:27:21.120 This caucus that Lauren Dirksen has assembled is going to be a very, very large caucus.
03:27:26.560 And how large his cabinet is going to be is up for, well, it's not clear how big of a cabinet he's going to have, I guess, to say.
03:27:35.980 the majority of his caucus will probably not be in it if he's a conservative uh his his cabinet
03:27:41.180 will not be large i would think but carolyn elliott's one of those people that you think
03:27:45.100 would be there yep uh along with harman bangu margaretta dogevall she's in a riding that is
03:27:52.540 very tight uh tighter than you know most rural ridings and it's downtown vancouver half of the
03:27:58.220 downtown core is now a conservative riding which is really really strange if you look at the map
03:28:04.060 it has been called officially that is uh her riding is surrounded by ndp mlas she is totally
03:28:13.740 isolated there it's like an outpost of conservatism yeah and she is hard line margaretta is not one of
03:28:19.740 those people that you know everyone can say maybe that there's people in the conservative party that
03:28:24.460 are not right-wing enough and that 1bc lined up with your values more uh i i agree with you i think
03:28:32.780 think that there are many people in this caucus that should not be in there, that should not be
03:28:37.380 bearing the Conservative standard because they are not Conservatives. Lauren Dirksen is, and under
03:28:43.580 his leadership, those people may or may not have a voice. If the staff and the people that have
03:28:49.980 been around him have any say, and the people I've been speaking to in the Conservative Party
03:28:53.180 headquarters throughout this campaign have anything to do with it, I think that those 0.99
03:28:57.260 alia warbuses who cry if there's not a land acknowledgement will not be in
03:29:03.140 cabinet positions we don't know and we're gonna be covering that yeah the
03:29:06.560 CBC will be crying if she doesn't they'll say Lauren Dirksen's Lauren 0.60
03:29:12.020 Dirksen's dragging his party to the right after this election it's a bait
03:29:15.480 and switch he lied to us that's what they're gonna say which is why we have
03:29:19.520 outlets like ours so that we can actually look at the facts and give you
03:29:24.180 an honest take about what's actually going on final results for a lot of
03:29:29.340 writings here it's looking closer that Lauren Dirksen's cabinet our caucus is
03:29:33.840 going to have a six handle on it 62 seats they're leading in 57 elected for sure
03:29:39.480 and he's leading in five more the NDP have not broke 30 yet the NDP are only
03:29:45.960 at 29 seats absolutely historic disaster yeah for the incumbent party of this
03:29:52.860 country so two things um on on lauren dirksen's new cabinet i think that will be obviously the
03:30:01.280 first test and it's going to be the perfect barometer to see where this government is going
03:30:06.280 to go because as anyone who pays close attention to bc politics the bc conservative party 0.97
03:30:12.320 as kian was saying there are mlas in this party who you would look at and you would you would
03:30:19.820 and you would say that's not a conservative that doesn't seem very conservative to me what this
03:30:24.580 person is saying uh yet some of them found themselves on the front bench in the legislature
03:30:30.020 chief whip for example as we mentioned with alia warbus um it's just that's going to be the big
03:30:36.920 test and if lauren dirksen decides to make a very strong statement to say the bc liberal bc united
03:30:44.580 uh faction of that party is not going to have a big role in cabinet that's going to be a big sign
03:30:50.400 the second thing i wanted to say was kind of unrelated to this but it goes back to
03:30:55.440 juno news and its role in how we got here we talked about it at the beginning of this but
03:31:02.040 we talked and the dominoes that fell in place but that started because of the juno news debate
03:31:08.460 and the Juno News debate brought us KLF and I think having KLF have actually got us to where
03:31:16.960 we are today so in a way that that proves to you indirectly I don't think intentionally
03:31:23.820 independent media can play a colossally important role in politics this wasn't the case I would say
03:31:32.700 even four years ago well i i'm looking for the cbc and i they might be over there in a corner
03:31:39.740 yeah watching this all happen uh they they were not there for the leadership debate we we went
03:31:45.980 out of our way and we hosted that this was at a time that it looked like david eby would be
03:31:50.700 governing for a long time and we thought no we need some eyeballs on this race and uh our team
03:31:56.620 assembled negotiated with every leadership candidate to get them there of course there
03:32:01.180 was some funny business there i'm happy to let that go uh but it it nevertheless if what's weird
03:32:09.180 to me then this is the strangest thing i was sitting in my living room and i thought we should
03:32:14.300 have a debate and and i called the party uh or uh executive director i said hey like would you
03:32:22.860 guys facilitate this if we hosted the first debate of the leadership campaign and that there was some
03:32:27.740 back and forth obviously but if it wasn't for that one moment hey we should have a debate
03:32:31.660 david eby would still be premier right now they would be in the legislature tomorrow debating
03:32:38.620 uh their next their next move and uh maybe carolyn elliott would have been premier right
03:32:43.820 uh would have been leader i don't know but she would have been the leader of the opposition
03:32:47.260 for a very long time yeah and the political situation in two years from now maybe david
03:32:51.340 eby wouldn't have been penalized for calling a regular election instead of a snap election
03:32:56.060 it's it's that that is illustrates beyond a doubt the impact that independent journalism has
03:33:04.900 that we by bringing the eyeballs of you our viewers uh it's it's not us that has the impact
03:33:12.040 it's you guys uh and we value every single day we go into the office we talk to our newsroom and we
03:33:18.600 say well why are we doing this and who is it for well it's for our audience every decision we make
03:33:24.680 should we publish this story oh we might get sued for a million dollars if we publish the story but
03:33:29.960 our audience needs to hear it that's we we pull the trigger we do it uh that whether it's the
03:33:36.200 debate whether it's our stories whether it's our documentaries whether it's coming here for a live
03:33:40.200 broadcast whether it's your show ratioed which every single week shines a light on something
03:33:46.040 going on in this country that is just not quite right uh i'm just so proud of the team that we're
03:33:51.240 building proud of the work that you're doing and it really speaks for itself i think the impact
03:33:55.080 that we're having well it's all because it's all because the audience trusts us but also no longer
03:34:01.160 trusts the mainstream media and juno news and the impact of the debate that it had on this moment
03:34:08.760 tonight wouldn't have been possible without the audience and and the energy that the audience
03:34:14.360 brought but it's interesting because again four years ago the mainstream conservative
03:34:23.840 establishment in canada i think could see where this was headed they could see that independent
03:34:31.180 media thanks to the audience that juno news is able to command it is important but they weren't
03:34:39.500 willing to give us access the same way they are to mainstream media. I think it's just
03:34:45.280 undeniable at this point. You ignore independent media at your own peril. If you do that, there
03:34:53.180 will be an impact. And that's because you lose touch with the grassroots. And so I think
03:35:00.200 this is not just a major political change, but this is a movement shifting change in
03:35:06.560 canada tonight i think energy is now hopefully back among the base and the grassroots of the
03:35:15.000 conservative supporters across this country not just the conservative federal party but of course
03:35:19.960 all across the country to realize these things can happen and conservatives can win in bc
03:35:26.520 can conservatives can win in in canada so let this be let this be a great moment for the
03:35:34.100 conservative movement that's the hope I think from this I think that there's
03:35:38.480 some lessons learned for every conservative political campaign can take
03:35:42.800 some notes about what happened here that made it so successful of course you
03:35:47.600 can't force your opponent to make such an unforced error and is up but you know
03:35:51.920 Mark Carney is going to be looking at this he is in a also similarly unique
03:35:56.300 situation of being in a majority government held up by just one or two or
03:36:03.700 few but any small group of his caucus has a gun to his head on any given issue so far it's not
03:36:10.340 been a problem but he might decide in a year that oh well you know i kind of want to i kind of want
03:36:16.500 a stronger caucus we're pulling well he might think twice i might my guess is tonight means
03:36:22.500 we will see this might this government of mark carney that was initially elected as a minority
03:36:28.260 go its full term of four years i don't think he's going to call a snap election anytime soon
03:36:33.380 looking at what we just learned here in bc the um there's a couple of important points on top of
03:36:40.420 that that need to be addressed so one of the major attack lines from the ndp was if you vote for the
03:36:46.420 conservative party in british columbia you don't know what you're getting that there is movement
03:36:51.380 behind the scenes of people angling to try to take the premier designates job now and there were
03:36:57.460 names like aaron gunn and they were bringing up names like caroline elliott and if you look into
03:37:02.660 the party bylaws for example this is the stuff that we do in our free time uh dig into political
03:37:08.340 party bylaws but as it stands right now an interim leader of the bc conservative party
03:37:16.260 is not allowed to run for leader in a leadership election that needs to be called but we were told
03:37:23.140 here on uh on this live show by several people heavily involved in the party this is not happening
03:37:29.940 lauren dirksen is the guy and obviously that was gonna that was probably gonna happen anyway but
03:37:35.140 it left the door open could could you potentially see someone else come in that that has been shut
03:37:41.220 down tonight british colombians have elected their man they've elected their government
03:37:45.220 and it's going to be lauren dirksen there is likely not going to be any other movement around
03:37:50.500 that but you know i i we spoke with aaron gunn on on earlier to open up this broadcast
03:37:58.020 aaron gunn to me is an interesting guy i mean you you you can't you can't ignore or not see
03:38:05.860 the groundswell that he commands in this party's base to be a leader of this party
03:38:12.420 the window for that to happen was closed he's not going to be the leader of this party anytime soon
03:38:18.340 but i mean you you think about where this could have gone how many different ways this could have
03:38:23.460 ended up but it ended up happening just in this one particular way where we have an improbable
03:38:29.620 new leader and a government that commands a stunning majority far beyond what the polls
03:38:34.180 were projecting and by the way it was great to work with polywave tonight a great partner for
03:38:38.500 our show to have instant access to the data yeah i i i want to go ahead and thank a few people here
03:38:47.060 ken over there he has been an absolute great asset here for our team making sure that we
03:38:54.740 have all the graphics ready and the mics working sound working i want to get a final word are we
03:39:00.740 getting carolyn elliott we are holding this broadcast for carolyn elliott to come and
03:39:06.900 join us we're going to have her word on the results if we don't have her soon uh we will
03:39:12.980 unfortunately have to wrap so i'm hoping that we're able to get this keep this rolling um i
03:39:17.940 hear in the chat people are are hoping for it uh and also congratulating polywave uh we're
03:39:24.180 congratulating polywave for the work that they did in helping us call this election did you know
03:39:28.180 polywave is run by an 18 year old guy like he's he's the smartest kid i know uh and he's he's
03:39:35.060 extremely deep in the numbers he knows what he's doing he knows what he's talking about he doesn't
03:39:39.220 say anything he doesn't know for sure. And he built this website that even some people in the
03:39:44.480 mainstream media have been using to help them call elections. We've decided to partner with
03:39:50.120 them because Juno News obviously isn't... We don't have a billion and a half dollar budget
03:39:56.800 like the CBC does. So we partnered with this upstart poly wave and they have been just
03:40:02.900 phenomenal. We hear in our ears, Carolyn Elliott is on her way to our booth. We're going to have
03:40:08.280 some questions to ask her about where her government is going to be taking this province. 0.99
03:40:13.320 We're going to get the chair set up here.
03:40:14.760 We'll get the mic brought up for Carolyn Elliott. 0.99
03:40:19.780 We need a mic for Carolyn Elliott to speak. 0.89
03:40:23.860 There we go.
03:40:26.860 So it's a madhouse here, and obviously someone like Carolyn Elliott is talking to a lot of
03:40:33.660 supporters, so we're going to just see how this works out.
03:40:38.280 but we should have we should have her on very soon let's take a final look at what the numbers
03:40:44.760 are uh are saying uh we're just looking at our partner polywave here uh and it looks like it is
03:40:52.840 cemented in this very very clear is that a super majority i believe it is that's wow it's not
03:41:01.960 actually quite a meaningful thing in in westminster parliamentary democracy super
03:41:06.520 majorities aren't super helpful like they are in the united states uh but it is pretty cool
03:41:12.420 if i was premier and i had a super majority i'd be happy with that result the ndp continue to lag
03:41:17.200 and fail and flounder they are now at 27 they lost two seats since we last updated this
03:41:22.680 there are 27 seats elected for sure in 22 and they're leading in five and the greens have been
03:41:28.620 elected in two seats so emily lowen will actually have a caucus of more than one uh so every single
03:41:34.140 political party leader has won their seat uh so conservative lauren berkson ndp david eby
03:41:41.180 the greens emily lowen and then one name that we haven't said this entire broadcast
03:41:46.140 center bc i know they also ran didn't they they did and and they failed they failed they
03:41:53.260 failed spectacularly eleanor sterko person tried to throw uh just the nastiest mud saying uh
03:42:01.180 terrible things about her opponents claiming you know playing the playing the lgbt card saying that
03:42:06.940 they they were uh there was homophobia or something whatever the obia is that they or ism
03:42:14.300 to try and get some votes and it failed eleanor circle if you are watching this i recommend you
03:42:20.540 don't run again uh it failed epically all right all right so joining us uh joining us now on uh
03:42:28.220 on the stage is caroline elliott the newly elected mla
03:42:34.540 we're looking at the map right now and we'll have caroline elliott the newly elected mla for
03:42:38.140 west vancouver capilano caroline elliott thank you for joining us congratulations thank you
03:42:43.660 for having me here and thank you for the congratulations so what is your reaction to
03:42:47.420 this this win i mean this is this is super majority territory it looks like um outperforming
03:42:54.220 what i think all the polls had predicted what's your reaction to it i'm thrilled i am so thrilled
03:43:00.780 like we have a huge mandate but we have a huge job today and the province has been left in such a mess
03:43:07.420 as you well know by david eby and the ndp the fiscal mess the economic mess the public safety
03:43:12.060 mess the health care mess the list goes on but i think what we have here right now is a leader
03:43:17.580 lauren dirksen who's going to fix that mess and i'm thrilled to be able to just be here
03:43:22.060 table to help them do that. How quickly will this new incoming government be able to solve
03:43:28.800 the DRIPA issue, if I can just have a blanket term, for the First Nations issues that have
03:43:37.240 received so much national attention? I imagine some of this can be done by the stroke of a pen.
03:43:42.200 How quickly can this stuff be resolved? I think some of it is going to take time,
03:43:47.480 and some of it is going to be quicker
03:43:49.500 and it just depends what the issue is
03:43:51.240 I think the overall issue we're dealing with
03:43:53.680 like there's the drip it piece
03:43:55.100 which feeds into our economic situation
03:43:57.180 our ability to build prosperity in British Columbia
03:44:00.660 we do need to repeal that
03:44:02.840 we've committed to repeal that
03:44:03.940 and we're going to do that
03:44:04.720 we're also going to have to do a whole bunch of other things
03:44:07.300 to kickstart the economy too
03:44:08.540 it's not just that
03:44:09.920 there's piles and piles of red tape that the NDP have added
03:44:12.680 there's our uncompetitive tax environment
03:44:16.120 there's all these different things
03:44:17.380 It's playing into the fact that B.C. is essentially uninvestable.
03:44:20.480 We need to get that investment.
03:44:21.840 We need to get those jobs. 0.53
03:44:22.960 We need to get those paychecks. 0.97
03:44:23.980 And I think Lauren Dirksen and the Conservatives, we're going to do that.
03:44:26.820 If you could rewind back to April, could you imagine that this is where the province would be?
03:44:33.680 I don't know that I would have imagined that, to be honest.
03:44:36.440 I think this level of a majority that we're looking at possibly having,
03:44:40.140 I haven't looked at the numbers in a few minutes, but the numbers we're seeing are incredible.
03:44:45.120 They're what we need, though, I think, in terms of a mandate to be able to properly fix British Columbia.
03:44:50.260 And I think the people who have spoken, they're ready for it.
03:44:53.260 So would I have expected it a few months ago? No.
03:44:56.460 But the closer and closer we got in this election, the more I saw Lauren just emerge as an incredible leader
03:45:02.020 and gain the affection and the trust of British Columbia, the more I thought this might be possible.
03:45:06.520 Just at the start of this week, Albertans, one in four of them, voted to look at another referendum to separate.
03:45:14.720 Do you think that this is more of a potential light at the end of the tunnel
03:45:18.520 for those independence activists who thought there was no hope for this country,
03:45:22.460 that even Justin Trudeau leaving was not enough?
03:45:25.240 David Eby was kind of seen as the last shadow of Trudeau.
03:45:29.260 What do you say to Albertans who were disillusioned with this country?
03:45:33.180 Yeah, I think David Eby and his government did a lot of harm
03:45:36.980 to our sense of cohesiveness as a country
03:45:39.620 and constantly finding ways to sort of wedge ourselves against other provinces
03:45:43.480 instead of looking at how we can work in partnership as neighbours.
03:45:46.700 And I suspect, and I certainly hope, that's the approach Lauren Dirksen
03:45:51.180 that we as Conservative MLAs are going to take,
03:45:54.240 is saying how can we work together for the betterment,
03:45:56.660 not just the British Columbians or Albertans, but Canadians.
03:46:00.140 We've asked every single candidate for your party today who's come on our show
03:46:04.500 what their thoughts were on race-based access to provincial parks.
03:46:09.660 And I know that that's something that's been very close to your heart.
03:46:12.080 We've been outspoken about that, and our viewers have been huge fans of yours because of that.
03:46:17.500 When nobody was talking about it during the leadership race in April,
03:46:21.160 you were laying down what you thought was wrong and right.
03:46:25.320 And I want to know, does this win change anything? 1.00
03:46:27.940 When those Indigenous bands come to you and say, 0.98
03:46:30.340 we want this access reserved so we can go do our thing in this week's of the year, 0.89
03:46:35.040 what's your answer going to be to that?
03:46:37.240 Yeah, I was really pleased to see in Lauren's comments here tonight
03:46:40.620 that he wants to see equal access for all British Columbians to B.C.'s provincial parks.
03:46:47.820 And it's something I've long obviously advocated for.
03:46:51.380 I think it's what everyday British Columbians think should be the case.
03:46:55.100 And so I feel pretty confident that that's the direction we're going to move in.
03:46:58.480 What's the next steps for you guys?
03:47:00.700 The biggest thing, I mean, is waking up tomorrow morning
03:47:03.380 and figuring out how we're going to deal with this massive, complex set of issues
03:47:09.960 that the NDP have left us with.
03:47:12.360 I know that Lorne has a very good plan to fix those things,
03:47:15.920 putting that into action,
03:47:17.380 letting him know that I'm ready to help in any way that he needs us to.
03:47:20.520 I know every caucus member feels the same way.
03:47:22.920 So that's going to be a big part of it.
03:47:24.520 Well, you'll be a huge asset to his team.
03:47:26.880 I'm sure he's glad to have you.
03:47:28.540 And everyone at Juno News wishes you guys the best
03:47:32.280 in the very complex situation you have to deal with.
03:47:35.920 Congratulations again for everything that's come your way.
03:47:38.720 Thanks so much.
03:47:39.280 really appreciate you guys having me on we'll flip to the pool camera quickly so we can get
03:47:44.080 our guests rearranged and thank you very much we'll be back one moment
03:48:09.280 I mean, what would be sort of your final reaction, your final thoughts on what has been a historic evening?
03:48:27.360 We went into this thinking we were going to see history. We've seen it. So what are your thoughts on it?
03:48:31.320 Well, if I was the Green Party, I'd be happy. They have representation in Victoria.
03:48:37.240 their leaders there she has a caucus of more than one which is good news for the conservatives if
03:48:43.120 the if the greens died here yeah we have we if the greens died here it would have been a disaster
03:48:53.060 for the conservatives who would not be able to form government I think again if the greens did
03:48:58.960 not have the momentum carrying them on through this election to the next one the David is going
03:49:05.740 to be, it's a masterclass in how to screw up a political movement. This leaves one NDP government
03:49:13.220 in the entire country, I think, in Manitoba. So it's bad news for them, potentially good news for
03:49:20.540 the federal NDP who might be able to start rallying some support where there was not much in British
03:49:26.940 Columbia because who was supporting what David Eby was doing and people translate that to federal
03:49:32.120 politics um again huge blowout for lauren we're going to give the final numbers here and wrap up
03:49:38.280 this broadcast for tonight uh i want to thank uh we'll go through the numbers quick and then i'll
03:49:43.320 go through my thank yous conservatives they are elected in 62 seats leading in 64. the ndp elected
03:49:50.760 in 24 seats leading in 27 absolute disaster they have lost 20 seats today because of david eby's
03:49:59.160 snap election call the greens they are at two and that's a hold from 2024 center bc dead in the
03:50:06.760 water 1bc same as well i know many of our viewers supported 1bc uh and we will i just want to give
03:50:15.640 a word to you guys i believed in a lot of what they said most of what they said i thought dallas
03:50:22.200 Brody was charismatic sometimes and I thought when she left the party it was
03:50:29.760 it was to start some left the Conservative Party was to start
03:50:32.460 something good her next move is gonna be interesting she's always welcome on
03:50:36.660 Juno news like I said we did extend an invitation to her and I really wanted
03:50:40.620 her to join one of her staffers as well they have been busy getting running
03:50:45.660 their GOTV and I don't I don't begrudge them for not showing up but we will
03:50:50.820 hopefully have some post-election analysis with them later because we do
03:50:54.720 want to hear from them they aligned very closely with a lot of you I know I've
03:50:58.440 been reading the chats it's disappointing results for them tonight
03:51:01.920 but you can't deny that this win for the Conservatives is better than David Eby
03:51:07.080 thank thank God thank God well without further ado I guess we should wrap this
03:51:13.200 up I want to thank our team Ken back there and our producer at home Sean
03:51:20.100 He's been helping in the back as well.

03:51:29.320 Harry, you've been a great co-host for me tonight.
03:51:32.160 It's been great to witness this.
03:51:33.620 It really has.
03:51:34.600 And I hope it is the start of a positive new chapter in a province that desperately needs it.
03:51:41.520 Yeah.

03:51:54.900 The only way we stay here is with your support, and that means a lot.
03:51:59.040 A subscription, right now there's actually a deal for the rest of the night until midnight B.C. time.

03:52:17.500 Thank you for supporting Juno News.

03:52:34.060 you for tuning in and we'll be back at our next election. You can be sure covering the story
03:52:40.380 wherever it is. Take care. Have a good night.
03:52:49.220 Thank you.
03:53:19.220 Thank you.
03:53:49.220 Thank you.
