00:00:00.000 Insider sources are saying that Prime Minister Mark Carney will call an election on Sunday.
00:00:10.560 Organizers at a Vancouver-area auto show banned Tesla from the exhibit citing safety concerns.
00:00:17.520 Canada's new Environment Minister Terry Deguide has said that Carney intends to keep Trudeau's
00:00:23.520 oil and gas emissions cap in place.
00:00:26.220 Hello Canada, it's Friday, March 21st, and this is the True North Daily Brief.
00:00:31.300 I'm Cosmin Georgia.
00:00:32.680 And I'm Clayton DeMaine.
00:00:34.020 We've got you covered with all the news you need to know.
00:00:37.020 Let's discuss the top stories of the day and the True North exclusives you won't hear anywhere else.
00:00:45.780 Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to ask the Governor-General to dissolve Parliament on Sunday
00:00:51.400 and trigger a snap election.
00:00:52.960 The move would come just one day before Parliament is set to resume on Monday following its prorogation
00:00:58.960 by Governor-General Mary Simon at the request of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
00:01:04.980 Unnamed sources cited by Radio Canada and the CBC indicate that the election is expected to last
00:01:10.860 between 36 and 50 days and take place between April 28th and May 5th.
00:01:16.020 Other outlets, including Bloomberg, which Carney once chaired, AP News and Financial Post,
00:01:22.360 say the expected election date will fall on April 28th, 2025.
00:01:27.920 The call will come just a week after Carney was sworn in as the first Prime Minister in Canadian history,
00:01:34.800 never to have held an elected office.
00:01:36.680 The election would be called at a time when the Liberals are up in the polls across the country.
00:01:42.140 According to recent poll numbers commissioned by Juneau News and conducted by One Persuasion,
00:01:47.780 Liberals are neck and neck with Conservatives,
00:01:50.440 with the Conservative Party of Canada ahead at 37% support,
00:01:54.760 while the Liberal Party of Canada sits at 35%.
00:01:58.400 The poll data shows that the Liberals have a six-point lead over the Conservatives in Atlantic Canada
00:02:04.180 and have pulled ahead by six points in Ontario,
00:02:06.820 where other polls were showing a Conservative lead for months.
00:02:10.980 Clayton, with the election being called a few days from now,
00:02:14.520 how are Canada's federal parties already preparing for a springtime general election?
00:02:20.080 Well, the Conservatives have been gearing up for an election for months.
00:02:23.340 When I attended Paulieff's Canada First rally in Ottawa the day after Valentine's Day,
00:02:30.280 his around 40-minute speech really felt like a campaign launch.
00:02:34.780 For those following his press conferences over the last year,
00:02:38.760 it was essentially a consolidation of all those conferences and policy suggestions,
00:02:43.900 and it seemed like he was just laying out his campaign platform for the next election.
00:02:48.140 Conservatives online have been canvassing already,
00:02:50.520 such as Kostas Menegakis, the Toronto-area candidate.
00:02:54.840 He was posting canvassing photos with constituents already holding up his campaign signs.
00:03:00.440 Multiple Conservatives have been opening their offices since last week as well.
00:03:04.940 Eglinton Lawrence candidate Karen Stintz, for example,
00:03:08.300 announced her campaign office opening Thursday,
00:03:11.220 and Durham's Conservative MP Jamil Javani is launching his campaign office opening party on Saturday as well,
00:03:17.600 which will be followed by door-knocking and canvassing.
00:03:20.520 Also, former True North journalist Andrew Lawton is also hosting a grand opening for his campaign office on Saturday in his London riding.
00:03:30.280 Roman Babber had his campaign open last Sunday as well,
00:03:34.180 so Conservatives were betting on a snap election being called.
00:03:37.900 The Green Party is gearing up in its own way, advocating for election reform,
00:03:42.020 and proposing a coalition of all the progressive governments to prevent Pierre Polyevre from doing anything if he wins a minority government,
00:03:50.360 and signaling that her party will vote alongside the other left-wing parties.
00:03:54.520 The NDP have been throwing out attack ads against Carney,
00:03:57.980 painting him as a man who's made a career out of sleazy business practices and making the rich richer.
00:04:03.640 And of course, Carney has been saying his government is doing several things as if it can with Parliament Pro-Rogued,
00:04:11.000 featuring some of the things Canadians can expect if they elect the Liberal government for a fourth term.
00:04:16.640 A Vancouver-area auto show has banned Tesla from participating,
00:04:23.900 citing safety concerns as far-left activists escalate protests against the electric vehicle automaker and its owner, Elon Musk.
00:04:32.160 The show's executive director, Eric Nickel, told Fox Business the exhibition has removed Tesla as a participant in this week's event.
00:04:41.420 He further said their primary concern was, quote, the safety of attendees, exhibitors, and staff.
00:04:48.040 Nicole said, quote, 0.99
00:04:49.260 This decision will ensure all attendees can be solely focused on enjoying the many positive elements of the event.
00:04:55.840 The event organizers even went as far as to scrub all references to Tesla from its website.
00:05:01.580 Although most of the Tesla takedown demonstrations have taken place in the U.S.,
00:05:06.720 the movement has seen demonstrations spread to Canadian cities.
00:05:09.760 In Surrey, B.C., roughly two dozen demonstrators gathered outside a Tesla dealership on Sunday,
00:05:16.640 holding signs with slogans like,
00:05:18.780 Elbows Up! and Elon Be Gone!,
00:05:21.400 voicing their opposition to Musk and his ties to the U.S. President Donald Trump.
00:05:26.580 The far-left Antifa group Vancouver Against Fascism organized a similar protest on March 15th
00:05:32.720 at Kitsilano Tesla dealership in Vancouver.
00:05:35.760 Trump has recently imposed steep tariffs on Canadian exports, escalating trade tensions,
00:05:42.100 and repeatedly hinting that Canada would be better off as America's 51st state.
00:05:47.080 Further south, at least five Tesla vehicles were damaged in Las Vegas after an individual set the cars on fire,
00:05:53.860 before unloading at least three rounds of gunshots in a targeted attack on a Tesla facility, according to Las Vegas police.
00:06:01.980 So, Cosman, obviously Canadians have been outraged over Musk's visible proximity and partnership in the Trump administration.
00:06:09.580 And we've seen Ontario Premier Doug Ford rip up contracts with Musk's Starlink because of this,
00:06:15.660 and that it's an American company during the tariff war.
00:06:18.700 When I went to an advance poll to canvas voters during the last Ontario election,
00:06:24.040 this was an important issue for the left-wing voters I spoke to.
00:06:27.100 Have there been any other cases where Tesla specifically was targeted by far-left activists in Canada recently?
00:06:34.360 Yeah, you're actually seeing it from activists and policymakers, as you mentioned.
00:06:40.040 And it's ironic because we're talking here about the most successful electric vehicle company in the world.
00:06:46.180 And you would assume that left-wingers who are so obsessed with solving climate change would support Tesla
00:06:53.940 because they've done probably more than any of them combined to reduce carbon footprints
00:06:59.480 and reduce the use of gasoline fuel, which, you know, in other times they would have supported.
00:07:05.360 But I guess because of Musk's proximity to Trump, that's not the case any longer.
00:07:10.500 But most recently in Montreal, there was this environmental group, Last Generation,
00:07:16.200 and you might have heard of them before.
00:07:18.280 They've done stunts where they block traffic, try to shut down bridges, etc.
00:07:23.520 But they went and vandalized a Tesla dealership and the U.S. Embassy a day later in Ottawa,
00:07:31.660 calling Musk a threat to democracy and climate action.
00:07:34.920 Two people were arrested so far.
00:07:37.500 And meanwhile, in Toronto, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow removed Tesla from its EV incentives
00:07:45.300 due to the ongoing trade tensions.
00:07:48.480 And here in British Columbia as well, the B.C. government, led by B.C. NDP Premier David Eby,
00:07:56.380 they excluded Tesla from a charger rebate program and other EV rebates,
00:08:02.280 directly saying it's because of Elon Musk.
00:08:07.500 Prime Minister Mark Carney intends to maintain his predecessor's cap on oil and gas production.
00:08:13.880 The cap was introduced with regulations drafted by the Liberals last November,
00:08:18.680 which require producers to reduce their emissions by about one-third.
00:08:22.700 Critics of the cap argue that it will kill Canada's energy sector and contribute to a decline in Canada's GDP.
00:08:29.040 Newly appointed Environment Minister Terry Deguid confirmed Carney's plans to keep former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's policy
00:08:36.940 in an interview with the Canadian press on Thursday.
00:08:40.600 The Liberals' cap forces energy producers to cut their emission level by about one-third over the next eight years.
00:08:47.920 A report published by the Parliamentary Budget Officer last week estimates that the required reduction in energy production levels
00:08:56.620 will lower Canada's real gross domestic production by 0.39% in 2032 and reduce nominal GDP by $20.5 billion.
00:09:07.360 The report also projects massive job losses across the economy of some 54,400 Canadians by 2032.
00:09:17.480 Additionally, the Carney government is proposing a cap-and-trade system,
00:09:21.760 something that Alberta Premier Daniel Smith and members of the energy sector have been outspoken critics of.
00:09:28.000 Conservative leader Pierre Polyev has vowed to eliminate the emissions cap,
00:09:32.040 pledging that under his Canada-first government, Canada would be able to tap into its vast natural resources.
00:09:40.680 He ensured that under his leadership, regulatory delays would no longer encumber projects like mines, pipelines and LNG terminals.
00:09:48.900 News that Carney will maintain the emissions cap comes on the heels of some of Canada's top energy executives,
00:09:55.880 panning an open letter to the federal government and opposition party leaders,
00:10:00.180 urging them to declare a Canadian energy crisis.
00:10:04.840 The group is calling for an overhaul of regulations to ensure major infrastructure projects receive approval within six months of filing an application.
00:10:14.800 It seems like with every passing day, Carney increasingly vows to stick to some of Trudeau's old policies,
00:10:22.240 despite wanting to present himself as this outsider and this signal of change for the direction the Liberals are going.
00:10:30.380 Clayton, are there any other energy policies set by Trudeau that Carney has indicated he might keep around?
00:10:38.600 Absolutely, yeah. Carney didn't get rid of the Carbon Pricing Act, despite the Liberals announcing that they had, quote, axed the tax.
00:10:45.940 The Liberal government only lowered the consumer price to zero while keeping the carbon price for industries.
00:10:52.600 So if he wins the election, he could simply raise the price back up on carbon,
00:10:57.020 particularly since he's indicated that his only problem with the tax, other than it being unpopular,
00:11:02.400 in his book, Values, Carney recommended a host of other fiscal and regulatory policies to move countries toward a net zero economy,
00:11:12.540 which could give us a hint of how he would run Canada's energy policies if he won the next federal election.
00:11:19.740 In the book, he advocates to raise the demand for electric vehicles by giving corporate welfare handouts to EV producers
00:11:26.700 and wants to impose regulations to phase out the sale of new internal combustion vehicles in the next decade.
00:11:34.540 And these are all things outlined in the Trudeau Liberals' policy to reach net zero by 2050,
00:11:40.660 including mandates or quotas for new EV vehicle sales.
00:11:45.960 He advocated new mandates regulating fuel and energy use.
00:11:49.840 He also said he would update building codes in new residential and commercial buildings
00:11:54.720 to be aligned with climate action goals, such as green mortgages.
00:11:59.440 On the campaign trail, he indicated that he would impose a heavier tax on industry,
00:12:05.000 making sure the, quote, big polluters pay more to disincentivize traditional energy projects and its use.
00:12:13.280 And he even named the steel industry in particular,
00:12:16.920 which Conservatives seized on as Trump imposed a tax of his own on Canada's steel exporters.
00:12:24.200 On Carney's European tour this week, he also doubled down on the need for Canada to have carbon pricing,
00:12:32.680 saying that it would be a requirement in order for Canada to sell to Europe and the emerging Asian markets.
00:12:38.860 So if anything, Canadians can expect an escalation of the Trudeau liberal climate policy regime.
00:12:45.880 And it raises the question of how much of Trudeau's energy policies came directly from the advice of Carney
00:12:52.920 when he was Trudeau's finance advisor for years.
00:13:15.880 Thank you.
00:13:16.740 Thank you.
00:13:17.140 Thank you.
00:13:18.180 Thank you.
00:13:18.740 Thank you.
00:13:19.120 Thank you.
00:13:19.300 Thank you.
00:13:19.700 Thank you.
00:13:19.860 Thank you.
00:13:20.260 Thank you.
00:13:21.440 Thank you.
00:13:22.020 Thank you.
00:13:31.640 Thanks.
00:13:32.420 Thank you.
00:13:33.620 Thank you.
00:13:34.480 Thank you.
00:13:35.400 Thank you.
