00:00:00.000 The FBI has arrested Canadian Ryan James Wedding in Mexico, the number six most wanted fugitive
00:00:11.300 in the United States. The former Olympian snowboarder is suspected of being a cocaine
00:00:16.580 trafficker, thought to have been in hiding in Mexico for over a decade. He's been taken to
00:00:22.120 the United States to face charges. FBI Director Cash Patel is in Los Angeles with the details.
00:00:27.460 Today, we are announcing a capture of another FBI's most wanted top 10 fugitive, Ryan Wedding.
00:00:34.700 That makes six top 10 FBI captures in one year alone. And just to tell you how bad of a guy
00:00:40.580 Ryan Wedding is, he went from an Olympic snowboarder to the largest narco trafficker in modern times.
00:00:45.960 He's a modern day El Chapo. He is a modern day Pablo Escobar. And he thought he could evade
00:00:51.680 justice. But these brave men and women put together a prosecution package, put together
00:00:56.380 investigative packets, put together an operation strategy. And here we are today, bringing him
00:01:01.660 to justice for trafficking hundreds of kilos of cocaine and also for the murder of innocent
00:01:07.800 civilians.
00:01:08.840 Now, police say Wedding ran a drug trafficking operation that shipped hundreds of kilos of
00:01:14.420 cocaine from Colombia through Mexico into the United States and Canada. He's also suspected
00:01:19.960 of ordering the murders of those who threatened his operation. He'll be in court on Monday.
00:01:24.460 Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on consumers not to buy Chinese EVs once those vehicles are
00:01:31.740 shipped into Canada. Ford says consumers need to consider the impact on manufacturing jobs in
00:01:37.700 Ontario before they even think of kicking the tires on these vehicles.
00:01:41.740 A moment ago, you said you're discouraging Canadians from buying one of the 49,000.
00:01:46.460 Are you officially asking Canadians, Ontarians to boycott any of the 49,000 Chinese-made EVs that
00:01:52.400 come to Canada? That is exactly what I'm saying, Colin. So thank you for that.
00:01:57.360 Say your word. Sorry, you're asking them to boycott the Chinese EV vehicles, support,
00:02:01.800 support companies that are building vehicles here. It's as simple as that. This is a team
00:02:09.040 Canada approach. We've got to stick together.
00:02:11.020 While Prime Minister Carney agreed to import 49,000 of these vehicles in a recent deal in exchange
00:02:17.680 for China cutting tariffs on canola and other agricultural products.
00:02:22.640 President Trump has uninvited Canada to join the Board of Peace. Trump posted this on his
00:02:28.880 social media site. Dear Prime Minister Carney, please let this letter serve to represent that
00:02:37.840 the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada's joining what will be the
00:02:45.280 most prestigious group of leaders, board of leaders ever assembled at any time.
00:02:53.440 Joe Warmigdon will be joining us today with that story. Here's his headline in the Toronto Sun.
00:02:58.880 Mark Carney's Board of Peace invite rescinded and laid a spat with the United States.
00:03:04.240 As many as 30 countries have already signed on, but most of America's traditional allies,
00:03:10.080 like Britain, France, Germany, have so far declined. The aim of the board is to promote peace,
00:03:16.000 but some worry its intention is really to ultimately replace the United Nations.
00:03:21.520 Carney was asked about trade negotiations with Trump. He called the question boring.
00:03:26.400 Mr. How do you talk to President Trump?
00:03:28.800 Oh, that's the most boring question.
00:03:30.800 Okay, what else are you going to do for affordability for Canadians?
00:03:35.440 What about Ludnick's comments?
00:03:37.040 What about Ludnick's comments?
00:03:39.680 Our guest today is Joe Warmigdon of the Toronto Sun, and he's been very busy writing about Trump,
00:03:45.360 Carney, Canada's role in the world. Welcome once again, Joe.
00:03:49.760 Yeah, it's good to be with you. It's historical times right now. There's so many,
00:03:54.880 you know, I guess things that people won't forget about this era, that's for sure.
00:03:59.520 Well, you've got a couple of stories. This one included Mark Carney's Board of Peace invite
00:04:06.480 rescinded in latest spat with the United States. We were invited and then we were uninvited.
00:04:13.440 What do you make of this?
00:04:14.320 Well, I don't think the Board of Peace part is really all that relevant to it. It was basically
00:04:20.000 the president reminding Mark Carney, you went to Davos and you humiliated himself. I mean,
00:04:27.840 like in terms of going out Trump, he tried to humiliate him. He spewed a lot of things that were
00:04:33.040 kind of like real leftist kind of Davos style, WEF, you know, UN climate change nonsense out of
00:04:40.960 America. And he did it in front of, you know, Americans, but also the whole world.
00:04:45.440 So what do you expect you're going to get? You know, obviously, President Trump, when he was on
00:04:50.080 the stage, he said, you know, he reminded Mark by name, you know, don't forget who you're messing
00:04:55.280 with here. And then, of course, we were all waiting for this shoe to drop. I was checking
00:05:00.000 True Social every hour, Mark, to see what he would respond with. So far, he came up with this Board of
00:05:06.400 Peace thing. That's not going to hurt us all that much. But if he extends that into things like travel
00:05:12.640 visas or, you know, in all the Cold War, which is where this could head to, that is going to affect
00:05:19.200 us. And so I'd like to see Prime Minister Carney tone down this idea that he's the leader of this
00:05:25.600 weird resistance against President Trump and realize that the American blood that goes through
00:05:30.800 Canada's veins is kind of necessary for us to survive. You can go make deals with China and
00:05:37.600 all this stuff all day long. It's not going to replace the 83% of the GDP and all the things that
00:05:43.920 come from Americans. That's our neighbor. It's our best friend. And, you know, it needs to be repaired
00:05:50.480 and not lit on fire worse. Yeah, I mean, there's an economic price to be paid for all of this.
00:05:57.120 Well, it's our livelihood. Our future is at stake. I mean, look, if you look at the
00:06:02.480 the world, there's not many places. There's only seven in that G7, but there's only about 10 countries
00:06:08.000 in total that have what we have in terms of an economy and the lifestyle that we have. We want
00:06:12.960 to keep it. The reason, you know, you have to look in the mirror and say, why do we have it? Well,
00:06:17.280 we have it because the American market is there. Yes, they want to change it. Yes, sometimes they're
00:06:22.240 bullies and whatever. That's the way it is when the big dog is in the pound. But to turn around and say,
00:06:28.880 no, we're going to just, you know, blow by you and all of that, we're going to belittle you
00:06:32.720 on the world stage amongst the very people that Trump hates, who he went there to kind of belittle
00:06:37.840 himself. It was nonsense. Look, it worked for Carney in terms of his own brand. His speech was, you know,
00:06:43.840 highly lauded around the world. And he's considered the anti-Trump leader. That's not good for you and me
00:06:49.840 or anybody that works in the street level here. We don't have Brookfield stock. We don't have blind
00:06:54.560 trusts. We have overdraft and we have a hard time paying our bills. And that's the fact we want to
00:07:00.640 keep it, whatever, whatever we do have, we would like to keep it. Yeah. As far as Carney's speech
00:07:06.400 goes, I mean, some of the media suggests that it was all about Trump, but Carney was talking about
00:07:11.440 the great powers. That's plural. So obviously he was talking about China. And if you look at the way
00:07:15.600 China, no, he doesn't get that mark. Sorry. He doesn't get to say that after coming back and signing a
00:07:20.240 deal with China and then talking about global governance, he was talking about America and
00:07:25.200 Trump. And he tried to do a sneaky little thing about, oh, world powers is China. Oh, by the way,
00:07:30.560 I just got back from there and I just talked about how great they are. You know, I'm sorry,
00:07:36.000 but I don't mean to cut you off, but I was like, my goodness, I heard, I heard other,
00:07:39.760 I heard other people trying to spin it that way too. I just don't see it that way.
00:07:43.680 The two Michaels. China arrested the two Michaels. China put up the huge 100% tariffs on our canola.
00:07:50.240 China has spied on us. China has stolen our intellectual property.
00:07:54.160 So I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm just saying Carney doesn't get to say it. It's ridiculous.
00:07:59.760 Carney doesn't get to lead on that though. He's the one that went over,
00:08:03.200 not with the elbows up, but with bended knee to China. And he also went over to Qatar.
00:08:09.040 So he doesn't lecture us about these kinds of things about global powers, but he's playing,
00:08:14.480 you know, a real dangerous game with the very people that also, you know,
00:08:18.880 they protect us, but they provide us with the lifestyle of the market that they do.
00:08:23.520 Our life here is because of the American way of life and let's not kid ourselves.
00:08:28.880 And so, no, I get your point, Mark. I do. I'm not clapping back at you. I'm clapping back
00:08:34.960 at the notion that the Carney spin machine is to saying that they meant China. They didn't mean China.
00:08:41.760 They just opened up the market for them to bring these phony cars in here that are so-called battery
00:08:48.800 operated into our market while we're losing market share. We're losing shifts here in Oshawa. I wrote
00:08:54.880 about that this week. There's over 5,000 jobs in Ontario alone that are disappearing as we speak.
00:09:00.240 Let's talk about that.
00:09:00.400 Let's talk about that.
00:09:02.400 I mean, the, the premier board has called for a boycott of these Chinese vehicles.
00:09:07.760 What do you think of that?
00:09:10.000 Well, I think, you know, again, it's, that's another soundbite from the premier and it sounds good.
00:09:14.480 Uh, welcome to the party. I mean, you know, he's been running around his best friend,
00:09:18.400 Christian Freeland and Carney and Trudeau for all these years. And now all of a sudden,
00:09:22.640 when he sees that Polly have is in some sort of trouble and he may want to run for the leadership,
00:09:27.520 he's deciding that he's going to be that voice of opposition. Now, having said that,
00:09:32.400 I do agree with Doug on this one. There's no way I'm buying a Chinese EV, uh, you know,
00:09:38.480 especially on the backs of our workers losing their, their livelihoods, their houses and their
00:09:44.240 kids' futures. And, you know, while they're pumping all that fentanyl into our country,
00:09:47.920 which is destroying our, our, our people, uh, sorry, I, I do agree with the premier on it,
00:09:53.600 but I just say, you know, welcome to the fight, premier.
00:09:56.880 Yeah. Well, I mean, you brought up fentanyl. I mean, we just also had the arrest of Ryan,
00:10:03.520 uh, Wedding, of course, in Mexico. He was number six on the list of most wanted in the United States.
00:10:12.080 Uh, a guy who really became known as a snowboarder and Olympian for Canada. And boy, he went on to
00:10:21.040 much bigger things, you know, in a way when he ventured into the world that he is suspected of
00:10:28.160 venturing into, but they got him, they arrested him in Mexico and Kash Patel was talking about
00:10:34.320 that. I mean, that's one less bad guy behind bars anyway, Joe.
00:10:37.840 Well, I mean, you know, again, it, this doesn't help Canada. I mean, the very fact that Ryan
00:10:44.640 Wedding is there, you saw the way that the Trump administration are suggesting that
00:10:49.280 there's dangers from the North to their border. When we all feel that it's, you know, more trouble
00:10:54.160 from the South, their South, but this doesn't help that, you know, Ryan Wedding, I was out at that
00:11:01.200 Olympics that he was in, you know, I found that whole snowboarding crowd that, you know, it was
00:11:06.000 kind of like they let people into the Olympics that never thought they'd be in it. They were all
00:11:11.120 a little out there, if you will. They were fun to talk to, but let's not kid ourselves. They, they,
00:11:16.800 they lived an alternative lifestyle. I don't know how he got into all that stuff. And I am
00:11:22.320 a big believer in, uh, due process. So I'll listen to the evidence because I've felt that they've
00:11:29.280 always pumped this guy up as a bit of a celebrity, uh, style, uh, convict or, or a fugitive that they
00:11:37.440 could kind of sell. Uh, so I never know for sure what I'm reading or what I'm seeing, whether it's
00:11:42.560 real or not, maybe I'll put a request in to talk to Ryan wedding, but from based on what I've seen,
00:11:48.320 it sure doesn't look good for him. Uh, lots of fancy cars and weapons and drugs. And, you know,
00:11:53.760 he was, he was taunting, um, if it was his, uh, you know, his, his own social media,
00:11:59.840 he was taunting the authorities and things like that. So, you know, you mess with the big boys,
00:12:04.640 uh, you're going to get, uh, you know, you're going to get what you get.
00:12:08.160 Yeah. He was nabbed. I mean, a guy like that, and I want, I'm going to move on from this story.
00:12:12.880 I just couldn't help noticing. I mean, his looks, he's, he's very well, for lack of a better word,
00:12:18.240 white, like he's a ginger. He appears to be like a red haired guy. I mean, a guy who's going to stand
00:12:23.600 out in Mexico, like a sore thumb, you know, if I look like him, I, I might go to Ireland or somewhere
00:12:29.200 or blend in a guy like that would not be able to blend in in Mexico. So I'm not, I'm surprised.
00:12:35.520 I wonder, you know, again, I just, the last point on Ryan wedding is that,
00:12:41.440 you know, I want to hear and see more details because he, he almost feels like,
00:12:47.360 like, I wonder if he could have been some sort of maybe an addict or something along those lines,
00:12:52.960 as opposed to being this big drug kingpin, but I'm not denouncing what, you know, the FBI,
00:12:58.640 great work. They found them and the RCMP helped and good law enforcement. So let's,
00:13:03.600 let's give them their due. But at the same time, I don't think we're supposed to be cheerleaders here.
00:13:08.960 Show me the goods. Let's see it. And then we'll report on it.
00:13:12.000 I think the RCP commissioner was down there for that announcement with Cash Patel, I believe.
00:13:19.280 Well, we got a story before you go. Trump's vile lie that NATO front in Afghanistan, pure fiction.
00:13:26.480 This really got under your skin and anybody, including myself, who interviewed the families of
00:13:32.960 Canadian soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan, knowing the incredible pain and loss they feel,
00:13:38.720 would have to find this repugnant by the, by the president.
00:13:42.640 He's way off base. He's way off base. He needs to walk that back. And, you know,
00:13:46.560 I would say, apologize. The guy's not infallible. You know, he gets a really a big wide berth from
00:13:55.760 a lot of people, you know, in the conservative style media say like, you know, on Greenland and different
00:14:00.880 things, kind of go with it, go with it. But you're not going to urinate on our troops like he did. And that's
00:14:07.200 exactly what he did. If you've got the quotes in front of you, you can, you can read them. But
00:14:11.440 the reality of it is that he's basically suggesting, or more than basically, he is suggesting
00:14:16.640 that the Americans were the ones that did all the heavy lifting in Afghanistan
00:14:20.720 and other conflicts. It's just not true. I call it a lie. In Afghanistan, Canadians, we lost 158
00:14:30.000 troops there. I was on the highway heroes many times. I was also in Afghanistan with those brave
00:14:35.120 troops and with NATO troops from all over the place, the Brits and, you know, many other places
00:14:41.440 that served. In fact, of the, you know, 3,800 or whatever the number is of people that died in that
00:14:48.800 war, which we handed the property back over to the Taliban at the end. So it was all wasted time.
00:14:54.960 More than a thousand were from other NATO countries, a thousand, more than a thousand. So for the president
00:15:01.520 to get up and say that they don't matter and that they were on the side and in the back, I mean,
00:15:06.400 that is a gross, gross, fictional rewrite of history. And he has to be called out on it. I
00:15:13.440 interviewed Major General, retired Dean Milner, who was a commander of troops in Afghanistan. How
00:15:20.400 about that? And he said that it was, you know, ridiculous. Again, he said the president's right
00:15:25.440 about, you know, the Greenland things and the NATO investments and, you know, Canada not being able
00:15:31.120 to defend its own sovereignty. He said that the president has kicked everyone's butts.
00:15:36.720 And they needed that. And he's right. But on this, he's not only was it rude and crass and
00:15:42.640 just disrespectful. It's wrong. It's out and out wrong. And, you know, in terms of history,
00:15:49.040 I mean, Canada has always been there first. World War I, World War II, you name it. Afghanistan,
00:15:55.040 we're there. We're there many times before the Americans were there, particularly in World War I and
00:15:59.920 II. And you know what? We've got to stand up for our troops. I mean, there's people buried all over the
00:16:05.280 world under a Canadian flag. So the president is, you know, has been accused of saying some things
00:16:11.680 before about the troops. I never really bought it. This time I heard it with my own bloody ears
00:16:17.200 and I didn't like it. And, you know, again, you criticize and you praise on each issue. And on this
00:16:24.800 one, that's an F for me. Yeah, absolutely. No disagreement on my end. But he's not the first
00:16:30.720 president to kind of diss our troops a little bit. I can distinctly remember during the war in
00:16:35.680 Afghanistan, four of our troops were killed by friendly fire and Bush kind of sloughed it off at
00:16:42.480 first. He didn't give it the degree of attention and concern that he should have when it first happened.
00:16:52.000 And so, you know, Trump's not the first. That doesn't make it right by any stretch, but I don't know
00:16:58.320 what it is. You know, it's an indicator, though, of the lack of respect that the Americans sometimes
00:17:03.600 have for other countries because they do the heavy lifting and their troops were very brave there. I
00:17:10.560 was on all their aircraft and everything. And I just was just so impressed with the Americans that I met
00:17:16.720 in Afghanistan. Think the world of them. And, you know, they don't, maybe they don't think the world
00:17:22.640 of us or maybe their leaderships don't. But that doesn't change the fact, Mark, that this did happen.
00:17:28.880 And we lost 158 soldiers. Many of them were blown up. And, you know, we lost civilians as well. We don't
00:17:35.920 forget that. And then, of course, the other troops. So, you know, from the other NATO countries. So the
00:17:40.560 president, if he wants people and Americans want other countries in NATO or whatever it is to back them up in
00:17:47.760 wars in the future, you know, you're going to wonder, well, if we go and we lose, you know,
00:17:54.880 Canadians there, is it going to be a punchline for you? Because if it is, no, thank you. I mean,
00:18:01.280 it's not exactly easy to sell losing people and having them come home and body bags. And that,
00:18:06.480 by the way, is how the Highway of Heroes happened. And I remember, you know, Candace is, you know,
00:18:12.160 obviously the boss at your network here, she would remember because her and I covered a lot of this
00:18:18.480 stuff for the Sun back in the day. And the reason we did it was because we wanted the Canadian public
00:18:25.280 to feel something and a sense of pride towards the Canadian troops. That's how the Highway of Heroes
00:18:30.800 happened. You know, it was something that I was out in Trenton. I saw the people on the bridges. It was an
00:18:37.440 organic movement. And we just put a title on it, the Highway of Heroes, because that's what it was.
00:18:42.240 And that became very important to Canadians, because now they understood what the sacrifice
00:18:47.440 was for. So to have someone come along and say that sacrifice didn't exist, and they were in the,
00:18:52.960 you know, in the back and they didn't do anything. My goodness, you know, that really was a punch in
00:18:59.040 the head. And I, you know, like, I'm not one, like, I'm not saying, you know, I'm just,
00:19:04.720 I'm calling out the president on this issue. And I think it was important to do it.
00:19:08.800 And I hope others do it too. All right. Joe Warmington,
00:19:12.320 you can check out his terrific work in the pages of the Toronto Sun. Thank you,
00:19:15.360 Joe. Appreciate this. I'm glad to be here. All the best. Have a great weekend.
00:19:19.360 You too, my friend. And that is it for this edition of Straight Up. Appreciate you
00:19:23.760 tuning in, my friends. Let's do it again soon, shall we? Bye-bye for now.
