00:00:00.000 The Liberal Public Safety Minister was caught on an audio recording downplaying the role police will have in the Liberals' gun ban and confiscation program.
00:00:14.400 The terrorist group Hamas has thanked the Liberals yet again after Prime Minister Mark Carney officially recognized a, quote, Palestinian state.
00:00:23.400 Prime Minister Mark Carney praised the Communist Chinese dictatorship for its, quote, sincere climate policy, despite the country being the worst polluter on Earth.
00:00:35.500 Hello, Canada. It's Tuesday, September 23rd. This is the True North Daily Brief. I'm Cosmin Georgia.
00:00:42.420 And I'm Jeff Knight.
00:00:43.540 We've got you covered with all the news you need to know. Let's discuss the top stories of the day and the True North exclusives you won't hear anywhere else.
00:00:53.400 In a leaked audio, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasandri dismissed concerns from a tenant who worried about being arrested if he refused to surrender firearms banned under the Liberal government's gun confiscation program.
00:01:09.340 The audio provided to True North by the Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights was recorded by a tenant in one of Anandasandri's rental properties.
00:01:19.660 The minister initiated the conversation on the program, which he suggested will launch today.
00:01:27.120 Anandasandri told the tenant that he had three options, deactivate the firearms, turn them in for compensation, or do neither.
00:01:36.280 The tenant asked the minister whether he would become a criminal if he refused to comply.
00:01:41.680 Anandasandri expressed doubt and added,
00:01:45.300 I just don't think municipal police services have the resources to do this.
00:01:50.420 When confronted by the tenant with the prospect of police raiding his home and handcuffing him,
00:01:56.920 Anandasandri suggested that he doesn't think, quote, it would go that far.
00:02:02.060 I'm going to refuse to hand them in.
00:02:05.240 They're going to come in, rip open my safe, right?
00:02:08.660 Take those firearms.
00:02:09.800 I put me in handcuffs.
00:02:11.260 I doubt very much is going to go that far.
00:02:13.720 Like, absolutely, it's going to give me that.
00:02:15.220 Because when you've given a mandate as the minister that these firearms were no longer allowed to be in these people's possession.
00:02:22.380 However, when his tenant asked Anandasandri if he would pardon his criminal record for disavowing the confiscation scheme,
00:02:40.260 he said he doesn't have the power to do that.
00:02:43.320 There's actually a lot in this recording.
00:02:46.620 I think it's about, like, 50 minutes long.
00:02:49.180 Most of it isn't about the gun confiscation program.
00:02:52.920 But the part that is, it says a lot about the minister's own beliefs versus the public-facing comments he's made in his role.
00:03:04.420 Now, as of yesterday, the minister put out a comment, a statement about this recording being leaked.
00:03:12.440 And he said, essentially, that his words were taken out of context, apologized for some of it,
00:03:20.920 and said that he had made a mistake in the way he phrased the gun program.
00:03:27.160 But for a while now, Anandasandri has insisted that this program is voluntary,
00:03:33.100 despite it clearly having the threat of arrest and potentially violating criminal law
00:03:40.380 and becoming a criminal, as this tenant brings up, if you don't comply.
00:03:46.860 So it isn't really a voluntary program.
00:03:50.800 Some would call it a Hobbesian choice, and that is it's not a real choice, but it's an illusion of a choice.
00:03:56.380 So what are some of the other things that the recording went into?
00:04:00.260 Yeah, Cosman, the audio recording also revealed Anandasandri's apparent skepticism
00:04:05.540 about the gun confiscation program's enforcement,
00:04:08.020 with him admitting to the tenant that he doesn't truly believe in its necessity,
00:04:11.880 which suggests it's being pursued primarily to secure votes in Quebec.
00:04:15.480 He further disclosed a lack of confidence in the program's logistical support,
00:04:19.640 noting that the $742 million funding cap might be exhausted quickly,
00:04:24.900 leaving participants without compensation.
00:04:26.960 Anandasandri hinted at internal government pressure,
00:04:30.680 mentioning offhand that the initiative was pushed forward despite his reservations,
00:04:35.300 which aligns with his earlier leaked remarks about electoral motivations from Quebec,
00:04:39.380 influencing the policy's revival.
00:04:43.740 The Palestinian terror group Hamas has again thanked Canada's liberal government
00:04:48.500 after it officially recognized Palestine,
00:04:51.500 joining several European nations in the controversial move.
00:04:54.460 This marks the third time in recent years that the terror organization
00:04:58.180 has directly thanked Canada for support.
00:05:00.960 According to the Hamas news agency, Shihab,
00:05:03.580 the Hamas leadership called Canada's recognition, quote,
00:05:06.440 an important step.
00:05:08.020 It said, quote,
00:05:08.780 This action is an important step in establishing the right of the Palestinian people
00:05:13.240 to their land and sanctities and on the path to establishing an independent state
00:05:17.420 with holy khuds as its capital,
00:05:19.500 which is the result of years of struggle,
00:05:21.440 perseverance and sacrifice of our people on the path of freedom and return.
00:05:25.660 This comes as Hamas spokesperson Gadi Hamad spoke to Al Jazeera's Arabic channel on Monday,
00:05:30.720 where he linked the official recognition of Palestine by Canada and others
00:05:34.360 to the organization's October 7th terror attack against unarmed Israeli civilians.
00:05:40.040 On October 7th, 2023, Hamas launched a terror attack against Israel,
00:05:44.080 resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties and over 240 hostages taken.
00:05:50.220 The majority of those killed were civilians.
00:05:52.920 In the interview, Hamad argued that, quote,
00:05:55.000 The fruits of October 7th put the world's eyes on Palestine
00:05:58.320 and questioned if any new countries recognized Palestine prior to October 7th.
00:06:03.400 So, Cosman, obviously Hamas is celebrating Karni's recognition of a Palestinian state,
00:06:08.080 but what precedent does the Liberals' move actually set on the international stage?
00:06:12.360 Well, yeah, it definitely doesn't set a good precedent
00:06:15.600 when Hamas is the first to cheer this announcement.
00:06:19.580 And as much as the Liberals claim that this doesn't benefit Hamas,
00:06:25.380 they are clearly celebrating this and view it as a diplomatic win,
00:06:31.700 a way to gain legitimacy, which should be a giant red flag,
00:06:36.520 because for them, it's not just a symbolic gesture.
00:06:40.300 It's validation of the program that they have for the Palestinian state and beyond.
00:06:46.740 You have their own spokesperson, essentially,
00:06:50.720 endorsing the fact that the October 7th attack
00:06:54.740 was what put the world's eyes on Palestine,
00:06:59.120 which means they had the objective of essentially
00:07:02.660 gaining legitimacy through terrorism.
00:07:07.280 So, when Karni says,
00:07:09.160 and he actually said this yesterday when he was speaking at an event,
00:07:13.300 that he doesn't want Hamas anywhere near the equation of a two-state solution.
00:07:20.800 He says Hamas shouldn't be part of Palestine's future,
00:07:24.940 and that essentially it should be abolished.
00:07:28.460 But even if he says that,
00:07:30.060 that's very naive and frankly detached from reality.
00:07:34.560 Hamas controls Gaza,
00:07:36.800 and they have huge sway over the Palestinian population,
00:07:40.320 and they're essentially the militant authority of Palestine
00:07:46.020 and its future.
00:07:49.160 And the fact that when you're legitimizing the state in this way,
00:07:54.640 it extends to Hamas as well.
00:07:57.520 They're not just some fringe player,
00:07:59.880 they are one of the main players,
00:08:02.160 if not the main player on the Palestinian side.
00:08:06.080 So, while Karni talks about peace and a future state,
00:08:10.520 the reality on the ground is that the people celebrating his choice are Hamas.
00:08:20.540 Prime Minister Mark Karni heaped praise on the communist Chinese government
00:08:24.960 for being, quote,
00:08:26.100 run by engineers and having a, quote,
00:08:28.720 very sincere and engaged climate policy,
00:08:31.740 despite China being the number one contributor of global pollution.
00:08:36.880 While speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations on Monday,
00:08:41.280 Karni suggested that Canada had more in common with China than the United States.
00:08:45.820 In my experience with China,
00:08:49.100 they are, amongst other things,
00:08:54.480 very sincere and engaged on climate.
00:08:57.960 This is a country run by engineers.
00:09:01.720 This is a country that understands a lot of the engineering solutions
00:09:05.240 to issues around emission.
00:09:07.660 They've happened to have built real competitive advantage
00:09:11.160 in a number of these areas as well.
00:09:13.120 So, there's a question of how,
00:09:15.020 and there's almost a standing offer from them
00:09:17.920 about how to engage in the global comments in and around climate.
00:09:21.300 which, a country like Canada,
00:09:24.780 which is a,
00:09:27.180 it is an energy superpower,
00:09:30.080 when we're certainly going to build and fully exploit that.
00:09:33.980 According to the International Energy Agency,
00:09:37.080 China is the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide,
00:09:40.660 primarily due to the country's heavy reliance on coal combustion.
00:09:44.340 In 2023, China accounted for nearly 31% of the world's carbon dioxide emissions,
00:09:51.560 up 4.7% compared to 2022.
00:09:55.440 Chinese authorities show no sign of slowing down
00:09:58.200 when it comes to the construction of new coal power plants.
00:10:02.140 In 2024, the country began building several new coal-powered facilities,
00:10:07.720 expected to produce 94.5 gigawatts of electricity.
00:10:12.460 Carney's comments come amid ongoing efforts by the liberal government
00:10:17.020 to rekindle trade relations with China,
00:10:20.080 including negotiating over seafood and canola tariffs.
00:10:24.160 By contrast, he characterized the United States as hesitant on climate,
00:10:28.300 saying, quote,
00:10:29.200 the U.S. could choose that lane very easily,
00:10:32.100 but probably at the moment,
00:10:33.860 that's not where the engagement will be.
00:10:37.280 So, this really brings back some memories.
00:10:39.480 The liberals seem to be overly sympathetic to China for several reasons.
00:10:46.980 What sort of things have we uncovered or covered in the past
00:10:51.560 as it relates to Carney's infatuation with the Chinese communist government?
00:10:58.480 Yeah, Cosman, this isn't the first time Carney's expressed admiration for the Chinese government,
00:11:03.000 and certainly not the first time the liberals have.
00:11:04.800 It echoes sentiments from his 2024 election campaign,
00:11:07.860 where he praised China's centralized governance,
00:11:10.220 a stance which is reminiscent of Trudeau's earlier comments in 2016,
00:11:14.040 calling China's dictatorship positive for economic decisions.
00:11:17.560 I believe he said that he admires their basic dictatorship.
00:11:20.800 The déjà vu feeling stems from Carney's 2020 role as Brookfield Asset Management's chairman,
00:11:25.980 where he championed investments in China's renewable energy and property markets.
00:11:29.600 Then there's the emails from Carney's Beijing speech in March 2024,
00:11:33.620 where he lauded China's decisive leadership in climate tech,
00:11:37.540 which again mirrors Trudeau's 2019 praise of China for their climate efforts.
00:11:41.560 This hints at a policy tilt that critics have linked to both leaders' pro-trade stances,
00:11:46.140 which is a narrative resurfacing with Carney's recent Council on Foreign Relations remarks on Monday.
00:11:50.940 Additionally, the outlet highlighted Carney's silence on China's human rights issues
00:11:54.760 during a May 2025 trade forum.
00:11:56.800 Now contrast this with their criticism of American climate hesitancy,
00:12:00.740 and you have what appears to be a consistent pro-China bias amid ongoing tariff negotiations.
00:12:09.160 That's it for today, folks.
