Donald Trump is trolling Canada.
00:00:12.160
Unless you somehow missed it, this week, Trump posted an edited picture of himself
00:00:17.120
standing on a mountaintop next to a Canadian flag.
00:00:21.540
Cue the Canadian media's pearl-clutching as they desperately try and understand what this all means.
00:00:27.560
Let me spell it out for you.
00:00:29.460
It's what some of us call a joke.
00:00:31.900
I'm Rachel Parker, and this is Rachel in the Republic.
00:00:44.220
Hey everyone, I'm Rachel Parker.
00:00:46.500
We have so much to dive into today.
00:00:50.280
It's been a very interesting and exciting time in the Canada-U.S. relationship.
00:00:55.900
So as you guys know, we've covered it extensively on this show and elsewhere at True North,
00:01:01.420
the looming threat of 25% tariffs on all Canadian products entering the U.S. market
00:01:07.580
continues to hang over Canadians and the Canadian economy,
00:01:12.460
as we have a leader who seems unable to respond to these threats.
00:01:16.160
Well, at least we thought so, until Friday night suddenly everyone noticed that the Prime Minister's plane was headed due south.
00:01:25.740
It looked like it was going straight to Florida, and it certainly was.
00:01:28.780
We would soon learn that Justin Trudeau would meet with President-elect Donald Trump on Friday night.
00:01:34.800
Now, if you watch the CBC or listen to the Canadian press, CTV Global News,
00:01:41.020
you would have thought that that meeting went splendidly for the Canadian Prime Minister.
00:01:46.880
The Canadian media hailed Trudeau's praises after meeting with Donald Trump and said the meeting was very productive.
00:01:54.240
Soon, however, cracks began to show in that narrative.
00:01:59.700
To start, Trudeau wasn't invited to stay the night at Mar-a-Lago,
00:02:05.100
Donald Trump's castle-like residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
00:02:09.940
Now, you might not think that's too much of a big deal,
00:02:12.620
unless you consider the fact that President-elect Donald Trump always invites his guests to stay the night,
00:02:19.120
and that Mar-a-Lago has 126 rooms.
00:02:25.100
The narrative further began to slip when Trudeau emerged from his hotel room on Saturday morning.
00:02:32.260
We showed that clip at the beginning.
00:02:33.960
We're going to play it again for you guys now.
00:02:35.700
I want you to take a good, hard look at Trudeau's face here.
00:02:39.860
Hi, Master.
00:02:40.800
What was it about this meeting with the other than the left?
00:02:43.420
It was an interesting conversation.
00:02:45.420
How are you talking about your own Trump?
00:02:46.640
Thank you, Donald Trump.
00:02:49.120
Stressed, tired, looking like the world is crumbling around him.
00:02:54.340
Those are all thoughts that came into my mind when I saw that video of the Prime Minister emerging from the elevator.
00:03:01.560
He does not look like someone who is having the best day.
00:03:05.580
And then the final nail in the coffin emerged when the tenacious Peter Doocy of Fox News
00:03:11.860
revealed a little tidbit of the conversation between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President-elect Donald Trump.
00:03:18.620
Take a look.
00:03:19.260
And tonight we're getting some new details about that Trump-Trudeau dinner from two people who were at the table.
00:03:25.220
We are told that when Trudeau told President-elect Trump that new tariffs would kill the Canadian economy,
00:03:32.380
Trump joked to him that if Canada can't survive without ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion a year,
00:03:39.420
then maybe Canada should become the 51st state and Trudeau could become its governor.
00:03:45.720
Yikes. Yikes.
00:03:49.000
I said in my opening statement that Trump was making a joke, which is true.
00:03:53.780
He makes a lot of them.
00:03:55.760
And the mainstream press consistently takes them seriously and gets upset about it, making the jokes all the more funny.
00:04:02.940
But there is another self-evident truth here.
00:04:05.880
Donald Trump doesn't like Justin Trudeau and he doesn't take him seriously as a leader.
00:04:12.040
And that spells very bad news for Canadians and the Canadian economy amid this looming threat of tariffs.
00:04:19.100
That will happen unless our unserious leader finally starts to take the border crisis seriously.
00:04:24.600
If you still don't believe me that Donald Trump doesn't like Justin Trudeau and doesn't take him seriously,
00:04:31.140
take a look at this next troll Trump posted to his Truth Social account.
00:04:36.040
Now, for those of you who are just listening on the audio version,
00:04:38.960
here we can see a picture of President Trump standing next to a Canadian flag.
00:04:45.140
It is not the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, but I suspect that it was edited to make it look like he was standing in the Rockies.
00:04:51.660
Now, I've explained that this is a joke and that we should laugh at it,
00:04:56.080
but we should also take very seriously the concern that Trump doesn't respect our nation's leader.
00:05:02.300
That is a problem.
00:05:03.900
But this whole saga also brought forward a perhaps predictable,
00:05:07.360
and I would say a bit immature response from some on the Canadian right.
00:05:11.360
Following Trump's trolling of Canada, which I admit is funny,
00:05:15.380
and I agree that Justin Trudeau is unfit to lead this country,
00:05:18.120
but I also acknowledge it is a problem that Trump doesn't take Canada seriously,
00:05:23.300
a problem that is inherently because of our unserious leader.
00:05:27.280
Some on the right said that America should invade Canada and make Canada its 51st state.
00:05:33.100
And I have to say that, well, as some of you who have watched the show consistently over the past number of months know,
00:05:39.080
I love America and I love its principles.
00:05:41.880
I do not agree.
00:05:43.860
Canada should not become a part of the United States.
00:05:46.760
And here's why.
00:05:48.440
Well, to start, Canada and America are uniquely different countries with different cultures.
00:05:53.420
Elsewhere in the world, and sometimes even here in Canada,
00:05:55.800
people will like to correlate the two countries and talk about how similar we are.
00:06:00.320
I mean, sure, if you compare Canada to, say, Japan,
00:06:02.860
then America does seem quite like Canada on that level of comparison.
00:06:08.520
But we also are uniquely different when you look at our countries individually.
00:06:12.020
I've spent a lot of time in the States and obviously I've lived my whole life in Canada.
00:06:17.500
And I can say for certain that we are deeply different countries.
00:06:21.180
To start, just something simple off the top of my head.
00:06:24.980
Canadians, we are known for our politeness.
00:06:27.980
Now, on the negative side, that can at time extend to unwillingness,
00:06:32.260
an unwillingness to speak our minds and to stand up for ourselves.
00:06:35.560
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Americans are known for their candor.
00:06:39.980
You'll know if you piss off an American because they'll be sure to tell you.
00:06:44.080
Likewise, Canada has also been a country that welcomes immigrants and multiculturalism.
00:06:49.000
Remember, Canadians only recently became frustrated with immigration
00:06:52.260
because of the rising crime and the rising costs of housing and other products in this country.
00:06:58.020
But most Canadians still want to lower immigration for the next few years
00:07:02.380
and then get right back on track with opening our door to the rest of the world
00:07:07.300
once prices have come down and once we've caught up with building homes and schools.
00:07:12.560
Now, I must acknowledge that I personally dislike this about Canada.
00:07:16.740
I think that our immigration numbers are too high.
00:07:19.640
I think that we should put more of an emphasis on assimilation rather than multiculturalism.
00:07:24.600
But most Canadians do not share my sentiment.
00:07:29.140
If you ask most Canadians, they will tell you that Canada is a place of multiculturalism
00:07:34.620
and that they like that about their country.
00:07:37.600
In contrast, America expects their immigrants to assimilate.
00:07:42.640
They opened their borders to the world's poor for a few years
00:07:45.760
and now they elected a president who is going to send those people back home.
00:07:51.340
I don't hear the federal conservative leader here in Canada
00:07:54.540
and the likely next prime minister of our country advocating for deportations.
00:08:00.580
America has stronger protections of civil liberties as enshrined in its constitution.
00:08:05.840
Our Charter of Rights and Freedoms pales in comparison.
00:08:09.340
They also have the right to bear arms,
00:08:11.920
which was created to protect the American people from tyranny.
00:08:16.560
We do not have the right to bear arms in Canada
00:08:18.860
and many Canadians feel squeamish towards firearms.
00:08:22.780
Again, I should reiterate that these are attitudes that I do not personally share.
00:08:27.100
I wish that we had the right to bear arms enshrined
00:08:30.020
in our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but we don't.
00:08:33.580
Another huge difference that I think extends to the attitudes between our countries
00:08:37.840
is how Canada became a country in the first place.
00:08:41.660
Canada has sought to earn its independence over 100 years.
00:08:45.260
We waited until Britain recognized our independence to become a country.
00:08:48.860
And we still recognize the King of England as the Canadian monarch.
00:08:53.380
America certainly does not.
00:08:55.480
As you likely know, America fought for its independence from Britain,
00:08:59.380
a war that spanned over several weeks.
00:09:01.940
And those who were living in America that had loyalty to the crown
00:09:05.380
moved north to what would eventually become Canada.
00:09:09.620
These differences are evident in the attitudes of both nations.
00:09:13.760
I would also say that I personally prefer the decentralization of power.
00:09:18.440
I'm not looking to be under the control of an even bigger federal government.
00:09:22.960
I might currently like who is to be the next president of the United States of America,
00:09:27.680
but there will be other times when I dislike the presidents of the states.
00:09:31.680
And if Canada was a part of the states,
00:09:33.720
that individual would have a heck of a lot of power over millions of people.
00:09:38.420
I should also say that while I may not love all the things about Canada that I've outlined here,
00:09:43.460
like our high immigration numbers, like our emphasis on multiculturalism,
00:09:48.340
I wish that we had the right to bear arms,
00:09:50.220
I do love Canada.
00:09:52.140
I love the childhood I had here, growing up in a small village nestled in the Niagara Escarpment.
00:09:57.640
I love our freshwater lakes, the prairies, the Rockies, and especially the people.
00:10:02.660
The Canadians who drove to Ottawa and to the border to stand up for my freedoms.
00:10:07.660
So to me, America is something to hope for, should all be lost here.
00:10:13.340
I love Canada, and I always will, but I don't know if Canada loves me anymore.
00:10:17.700
And I'm not accused of being a traitor for acknowledging that there might not always be a place for me in my country,
00:10:22.960
because my family has sacrificed a lot to fight for freedom in this country,
00:10:27.700
more than most people in fact, and we will continue to do so.
00:10:30.820
But if the day ever comes when I'm thrown in jail, as the Liberal government would like to do,
00:10:36.220
there's a bill in the House of Commons right now that's at second reading,
00:10:39.640
that threatens to do this very thing.
00:10:41.680
If I'm thrown in jail for saying that a man can't be a woman,
00:10:45.060
or the government wants to take my kids from me because I want to raise them as Christians,
00:10:48.980
or homeschool them, or maybe I don't want to have them vaccinated,
00:10:52.100
then I will have no choice but to leave.
00:10:54.060
And should that day come, I'll be grateful that America exists just as it is,
00:11:00.080
without the politicians and the people who sought to strip so much from people like you and like me.
00:11:07.020
All right, everyone, let me know what you think of today's episode of Rachel and the Republic.
00:11:11.280
I'm especially curious to hear if you think that the Conservative Party and a federal Conservative leader,
00:11:17.160
Pierre Polyev, will undo the damage caused by Justin Trudeau.
00:11:20.600
Yes, I think they'll undo some of it, but will they undo all of it?
00:11:24.520
I think the biggest problem that we have facing our country right now is the high rate of immigration
00:11:29.260
and the fact that Canadians do not want to have children anymore.
00:11:34.180
Curious to hear your thoughts on this subject matter.
00:11:36.740
Thank you so much for tuning in.
00:11:38.000
I'll see you next week.
00:11:39.360
Have a great weekend and God bless.
