I'm in downtown Montreal along the march route for the climate strike, the climate march.
00:00:15.500
Hundreds of thousands of people walking these streets saying that we need action on the climate and we need action now.
00:00:22.020
The keynote speaker, of course, is teenage activist Greta Thunberg.
00:00:25.860
Justin Trudeau is in the march, as is Elizabeth May.
00:00:28.260
And what's fascinating is that despite how the Liberals have made such a profoundly fierce defence of this issue,
00:00:36.260
and they've said they're the ones looking out for the climate and other parties aren't,
00:00:39.460
what's fascinating about this is that Justin Trudeau has been hit from the environmentalists today
00:00:44.880
and from Greta Thunberg herself saying that he's not doing enough.
00:00:49.420
He had a private meeting in his capacity as Prime Minister, not about Liberal leadership or about the election.
00:00:55.660
And they sat down for about 15 minutes, and after the meeting, Greta Thunberg said he's not doing enough.
00:01:01.400
And what does Justin Trudeau say? Well, he agreed with her.
00:01:04.540
And then Justin Trudeau was earlier in the day speaking to reporters before he joined the march,
00:01:10.860
Climate criminal, we are going to miss our parents' accords.
00:01:36.860
Yes, an environmentalist protester, one of many who's been dogging Justin Trudeau throughout the campaign,
00:01:45.760
decides to accuse him of being a climate criminal for his purchase of the Trans Mountain Pipeline,
00:01:55.600
Now, what's interesting here is that the radicalists in the environmentalist movement
00:02:00.180
are actually starting to become a lot more commonplace within it,
00:02:03.420
where this event is full of people that, despite Justin Trudeau being the guy that said today
00:02:09.400
these are people here that are saying he's not doing enough.
00:02:15.740
regardless of whether you think the government needs to be doing more,
00:02:18.460
it is fascinating that Justin Trudeau has tried to present himself as being the environmental guy,
00:02:27.660
When I caught up with the campaign earlier in Thunder Bay, Ontario, as well,
00:02:31.760
anti-pipeline protesters protesting Justin Trudeau from the left,
00:02:39.480
Now, whether it's going to have any significant impact at the polls stands to be seen,
00:02:43.540
but we know the NDP is trying to posit itself as being the non-sellout environmental party.
00:02:48.980
In fact, Jagmeet Singh earlier was asked at a town hall in Burnaby
00:02:52.380
why he should get someone's vote instead of the Greens if they care about the environment.
00:02:56.760
And he said, well, you know, the Greens are great,
00:02:59.780
and he agrees with them on a lot of things, but the NDP is the full package.
00:03:03.020
He actually talked about how the NDP is unequivocally pro-choice,
00:03:06.320
and the Greens aren't, and said, and we've got the environmental stuff on top of that.
00:03:10.460
And the NDP sent out a press release earlier this week,
00:03:14.820
It said, you bought a pipeline directed at Justin Trudeau.
00:03:19.200
So the NDP is very much taking the environmentalist position on this,
00:03:23.400
and what's interesting is that Jagmeet Singh isn't even at the Montreal Climate March.
00:03:27.820
He is marching out of province in a different event.
00:03:31.000
And, of course, Andrew Scheer, the only leader not partaking in the festivities today,
00:03:35.260
as has been pointed out by the left-wing party leaders.
00:03:40.520
From Montreal, for True North, I'm Andrew Lutton.
