In this episode, I sit down with Conservative MP for Ontario's Peter Demers to talk about the Alberta separation movement, his support for the proposed separation of Canada from the United States, and why he believes the federal Conservative Party should focus on the needs of Canadians.
00:00:00.000So we've seen the Alberta separation movement grow quickly with thousands of Albertans lining up to sign the petition.
00:00:05.500Given how many people are interested, do you believe that this is a legitimate option for the province?
00:00:10.400I'm an Ontario MP. I think the last thing Western Canadians want is someone from Ontario telling them how to engage with politics.
00:00:16.680You know, I'm here at this convention because I think we need to save Canada from, you know,
00:00:20.480more of what we've seen over the last 10 years of Liberal government.
00:00:23.400And I think Pierre Polyev is the leader for that.
00:00:25.660He's a guy from Alberta. He understands the problem and the reasons why people in Western Canada are frustrated.
00:00:31.560But I think we need to unlock our resource sector, and that's something that doesn't just benefit people in the West but across the country.
00:00:37.500What are your thoughts on Mark Carney cozying up to China, even though he said previously that they're our biggest threat?
00:00:43.060Well, it's another flip-flop. I mean, Mark Carney promised Canadians that he would get a deal with the United States.
00:00:48.160He did not say that he was going to instead start making deals with dictators in Qatar and China.
00:00:53.300So I think we need to be very concerned about that.
00:00:55.660and even what he's promised on bringing in 50,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles.
00:00:59.420That isn't just an economic threat to Canada, but that's a security threat.
00:01:02.880So it's something that people need to be very concerned about.
00:01:05.580What do you feel like should be the number one focus for the Federal Conservative Party right now?
00:01:09.840Well, I think the focus is meeting the needs of Canadians.
00:01:13.620We have seen a massive affordability crisis in this country.
00:01:16.700I think it's 2.2 million people use a food bank every single month.
00:01:20.180In my own riding, we've seen record demand at all of the local food banks,
00:01:23.440and this is a problem that is only getting worse.
00:01:25.280We also see crime, a massive issue there where 10 years of reforms on bail have resulted in more violent repeat offenders out on streets.
00:01:33.680And I think that at a certain point people need to realize and are realizing that the government that caused these problems can't be trusted to find the solutions for them.
