00:00:00.000 three canadian premiers are pushing for a new pipeline to be built from western to eastern
00:00:10.400 canada to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil an ontario superior court judge halted an
00:00:16.640 immigrant's guilty plea in a homicide case due to concerns over the accused potential deportation
00:00:22.480 conservative leader pierre polyev called for a crackdown on what he called the longest ballot
00:00:28.480 quote scam flooding elections with record numbers of protest candidates hello canada it's wednesday
00:00:35.840 july 23rd and this is the true north daily brief i'm cosmon georgia and i'm alex sultan we've got
00:00:43.040 you covered with all the news you need to know let's discuss the top stories of the day and the
00:00:48.160 true north exclusives you won't hear anywhere else three of canada's premiers have renewed calls for
00:00:57.200 a pipeline that would run from western canada to refineries located in the east making the country
00:01:03.440 less reliant on the united states and elsewhere alberta premier danielle smith saskatchewan premier
00:01:10.000 scott moe and ontario premier doug ford told reporters on tuesday that the time for a cross-country
00:01:16.880 pipeline was quote long overdue canada's premiers and prime minister mark carney are currently gathered
00:01:23.440 in huntsville ontario for the muskoka summit the summit is a three-day assembly to deal with the
00:01:29.680 ongoing trade dispute with the trump administration their calls come after the house of commons passed
00:01:35.920 bill c-5 last month which aims to accelerate the building of infrastructure including pipelines the
00:01:43.360 legislation will permit proposals deemed in the national interest to receive expedited environmental
00:01:50.000 impact reviews with a target of having major projects approved within two years um you've
00:01:56.480 spoken a lot about using um getting our resources to other markets but as daniel smith pointed out
00:02:02.000 our oil currently runs through the united states to ontario michigan threatened to cut that off a
00:02:07.600 couple years ago trump could cut it off for political reasons do we need to build a pipeline from
00:02:11.680 alberta to ontario on canadian soil regardless of whether there's a proponent or not for national
00:02:16.720 security reasons it it should give us pause that we in eastern canada are overly reliant on oil that
00:02:24.400 either has to come by way of the united states or has to be shipped in from overseas and so we could
00:02:29.280 have addressed that years ago with the energy east pipeline energy east is now no longer an option
00:02:34.480 that's available to us because those pipelines are now full of gas but if we can begin by creating
00:02:40.320 a pipeline option that will at least help us to get to ontario so that we can satisfy the needs of this
00:02:45.760 market i think that that'll give energy security to the country and that's probably something that's
00:02:49.280 long overdue we probably should have done it decades ago we certainly need to have canadian
00:02:54.240 access through line uh to the refineries in eastern canada and i think that would be important to
00:02:58.800 those that live in central and eastern canada as well so that we have that energy security as a country
00:03:04.400 i would point out the the comparison of what happened most recently in eastern europe when european
00:03:10.000 countries uh learned that they have been entirely reliant uh for a significant amount of their their
00:03:16.720 energy security on russia uh not a country that today they want to be reliant on for that energy
00:03:22.160 security we can't chance it any longer we need to be independent we need a pipeline uh going to
00:03:28.400 southwestern ontario uh to one of the refineries and be self-reliant mo agreed with smith adding that
00:03:35.600 canada must have access through line to refineries in eastern canada a poll conducted by juno news last
00:03:43.360 month found overwhelming support for building more pipelines in canada with 98.5 percent of respondents
00:03:51.280 voting in favor of pipeline expansion the survey which collected 6903 responses across the country
00:03:59.440 found strong majority support in every province with the lowest support still reaching over 90 percent
00:04:05.760 in prince edward island and quebec alex i would say five to ten years ago agreement on pipelines from
00:04:14.560 multiple premiers would have been a far-fetched idea but here we have three premiers of some of the most
00:04:23.920 most economically strong provinces in this country saying that now is the time to have an east to west
00:04:33.520 pipeline and to stop canada's reliance on refineries in the united states but it makes me wonder does the
00:04:42.480 carny government actually have the political will despite this unity we see from some premiers to build these
00:04:51.760 pipelines now or is it going to die solely because of quebec because the quebec premier francois legote
00:05:00.960 has still been belligerent and has refused to even be open to the idea of a pipeline crossing through quebec
00:05:09.440 carny's liberal government i would say regardless of the rhetoric has a fairly low to moderate appetite
00:05:16.000 for pipelines across the country for for various reasons chief among them as you've noted being
00:05:21.760 quebec's resistance to pipelines but also the the federal liberal government hasn't really changed
00:05:28.320 too much in terms of its general climate commitments for instance under the paris agreement and also the
00:05:35.600 net zero emissions accountability act also in terms of their electoral strategy you could say a lot of
00:05:44.000 their progressive voters especially in ontario bc and quebec are still opposed to pipelines so they're
00:05:50.240 they're going to continue i believe courting those voters and then also the past backlash that we've
00:05:55.120 seen from liberal supporters as well over pipeline projects like the trans mountain which the trudeau
00:06:01.120 liberals bought and advanced but at a great political and financial cost so i would say that
00:06:07.520 the chances of the federal liberal government under carney much like the federal liberal government under
00:06:13.040 trudeau i would say that it's unlikely that they're going to be supporting any sort of transnational
00:06:18.080 pipeline and reducing our reliance on american oil refineries
00:06:24.720 a canadian judge hit the brakes on a guilty plea from a non-citizen linked to a homicide and facing
00:06:29.840 serious criminal charges citing her discomfort with the fact that the accused would likely be deported
00:06:34.960 if found guilty vitor bueron a 22 year old filipino national was set to plead guilty to multiple
00:06:41.280 charges stemming from a high-risk takedown by barry police earlier this year he was arrested on january 17th
00:06:47.200 along with several co-accused after officers stopped a vehicle in a north end plaza and allegedly found
00:06:52.720 drugs and firearms inside of it whereon is also facing an unrelated manslaughter charge in toronto
00:06:58.400 in connection with a fatal stabbing despite the accused's willingness to plead guilty and his
00:07:02.800 insistence that the court proceedings move forward on the gun and drug offenses superior court justice
00:07:07.920 vanessa christie shelved the proceedings this week concerned over the immigration consequences of a
00:07:13.040 conviction christie paused the case saying she was not satisfied that bueron had consulted with an
00:07:18.640 immigration lawyer or fully understood how a conviction could affect his citizenship status
00:07:24.240 christie said quote we are not experts on immigration law and adjourned the matter until next monday for a
00:07:30.400 video appearance specifically christie expressed discomfort with proceeding without confirming that
00:07:37.040 bueron had obtained proper legal advice on potential immigration and citizenship fallout
00:07:41.840 that could come with his guilty plea christie was appointed as a judge of the superior court of
00:07:47.040 justice of ontario by former prime minister justin trudeau in 2019 whereon who immigrated to
00:07:53.920 canada just over a decade ago from the philippines would likely face an automatic removal from the
00:07:59.200 country upon conviction given the seriousness of the offenses and the anticipated sentencing cosmon do you
00:08:05.600 know of any other recent examples where a canadian judge has prioritized matters of immigration and
00:08:12.080 citizenship over criminal justice itself so on the question of judges prioritizing immigration over
00:08:19.360 criminal justice we actually saw a recent case also in ontario ontario justice paul omera gave a conditional
00:08:29.360 discharge to an immigrant akash kumar kant an indian national who tried buying sex from somebody he thought
00:08:38.640 was a 15 year old girl now this was a police sting and kant admitted guilt in the court but omara focused in his
00:08:48.720 ruling on how a conviction could mess up his immigration status delay citizenship and block him from sponsoring
00:08:58.480 his wife now i have no idea why his wife would want to continue being with this individual given what
00:09:05.920 he's done but the crown wanted jail time yet omara let him off to avoid what he called collateral
00:09:14.800 consequences to this individual's immigration so in this case it clearly sounds like immigration concerns
00:09:22.720 trumped the crime here and with this particular instance of this individual charged with
00:09:28.320 gun and drug crimes the judge said that she's not an immigration lawyer or she's not an expert in
00:09:36.640 immigration law and that's true she's not she's a judge overseeing a criminal case and i can't think
00:09:44.160 of a more clear-cut and dry case where you have the accused come and say i want to plead guilty
00:09:52.000 guilty uh to being discovered with you know these drugs and and firearms because the police essentially
00:10:00.800 pulled it was a traffic stop where they pulled this individual over and that's what the charges result
00:10:06.080 from so this individual wants to plead guilty insisted that he should plead guilty yet this judge went out of
00:10:13.440 the way to delay the justice system even further because of what because she can't understand immigration
00:10:22.560 law it doesn't really make any sense the conservatives are calling on the federal government to close what
00:10:30.720 they call a glaring loophole in canada's election laws one that's being abused by a group to flood ballots
00:10:38.160 with a record number of protest candidates in a letter to government house leader stephen mckinnon
00:10:44.720 conservative leader pierre polyev and conservative mp michael cooper demanded swift action to stop the
00:10:51.040 longest ballot committee from exploiting the nomination system and stuffing the candidate list the letter reads
00:10:58.160 quote this is not democracy in action it is a deliberate attempt to manipulate the rules confuse voters and undermine
00:11:06.560 confidence in our elections despite elections canada previously warning the liberals about ballot padding
00:11:13.600 the warnings went ignored polyev and cooper demanded that action be taken immediately upon parliament's
00:11:21.200 return in september however even if the federal government complies the change will come too late for
00:11:28.480 polyev's upcoming by-election in battle river crowfoot scheduled for august 18th 2025.
00:11:36.240 as of tuesday morning the ballot has 152 candidates and is growing when polyev called the election protest
00:11:44.400 group a quote scam on friday 102 candidates were registered the conservatives have issued three
00:11:51.680 demands in their letter firstly they argue that candidate nomination should require 0.5 percent of the
00:11:58.480 population in a riding not just 100 signatories as for those signatories the conservatives demanded that
00:12:05.440 signatures be limited to signing for one candidate lastly they also demanded that official agents can
00:12:11.920 only represent one candidate at a time conservatives wrote quote these reforms will make the long ballot
00:12:18.960 scam impossible to carry out again and turn the ballot back to voters free from manipulation conservatives
00:12:26.080 stand ready to work with you to solve this problem as of tuesday morning 145 of the 152 candidates
00:12:33.920 in the riding have the same individual listed as their official agent assuming every one of those is
00:12:40.240 associated with the longest ballot committee there are only seven other candidates i know that elections
00:12:46.560 canada has appeared before committee to discuss this particular issue because this stunt isn't the
00:12:53.120 first that they've pulled they've been in past elections and by elections the most recent one was obviously
00:13:00.080 pier poliev's own riding of carlton which he lost where they ran a record number of candidates at that time
00:13:07.040 so alex what recommendations did elections canada make to the government in the past on how to fix this issue
00:13:14.960 so cosmic in a similar vein to the election interference report elections canada has acknowledged that this is a
00:13:22.720 major issue and that there are significant flaws and loopholes in canada's election system what some
00:13:30.880 of the listeners might find disturbing though is that they haven't really proposed any substantive changes
00:13:36.160 they've only floated some recommendations and that includes in reference to these longest ballot
00:13:43.040 initiatives that we have seen in carlton and now in the new riding that pier poliev is running in in this
00:13:49.520 upcoming by election some of the recommendations that they've floated include sanctions when
00:13:54.800 individuals sign more than one nomination paper to prevent orchestrated stacking by protest groups
00:14:00.720 as we're seeing now they've also suggested raising the number of signatures required per canada
00:14:06.320 you know something along the lines of 500 to a thousand but again none of these changes are official
00:14:11.440 policy yet and another recommendation that they've included would be requiring parties to publish their
00:14:18.000 nomination contest rules including eligibility voting process voter id and results reporting
00:14:25.680 another controversial recommendation particularly as it pertains to the last liberal nomination of mark
00:14:31.840 carney as their party leader would be limiting voters and nomination contests to canadian citizens
00:14:37.440 or permanent residents to reduce vulnerabilities to foreign interference although that might also help with
00:14:43.520 reducing some of these longest ballot initiatives as well that's it for today folks thanks for tuning in
