00:00:00.000 Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump held a call together after the
00:00:09.800 Canadian election and pledged to have a meeting at the White House.
00:00:13.520 Ontario Premier Doug Ford renewed his attack on Pierre Paulyeve while calling for tougher
00:00:19.360 bail laws and a hardline stance on crime.
00:00:22.500 While Doug Ford distanced himself from Pierre Paulyeve and criticized the federal conservative
00:00:27.920 campaign, B.C. Conservative leader John Rustad doubled down on his support, praising Paulyeve's
00:00:34.580 messaging and calling for unity across conservative parties nationwide.
00:00:40.040 Hello, Canada.
00:00:40.760 It's Friday, May 2nd, and this is the True North Daily Brief.
00:00:44.020 I'm Cosmin Georgia.
00:00:45.660 And I'm Clayton DeMaine.
00:00:46.860 We've got you covered with all the news you need to know.
00:00:50.040 Let's discuss the top stories of the day and the True North exclusives you won't hear anywhere
00:00:55.280 else.
00:00:57.920 Just days after the Liberals' victory in the 2025 federal election, Prime Minister Mark
00:01:06.140 Carney called U.S. President Donald Trump setting up a meeting between the two leaders.
00:01:12.180 In a short press release, the Prime Minister said that Trump congratulated Carney on his
00:01:17.420 election victory and asserted that the leaders came to a mutual agreement to work together
00:01:24.080 as, quote, independent sovereign nations for their mutual benefit.
00:01:29.760 Taking questions from the media during a cabinet meeting, Trump said that Carney called him wanting
00:01:36.540 to make a deal and that he won the Canadian election because he was the least anti-Trump candidate.
00:01:44.880 Trump said, quote,
00:01:45.920 I think we're going to have a great relationship.
00:01:48.880 He called me up yesterday.
00:01:50.520 He said, let's make a deal.
00:01:52.440 Trump remarked that while he finds Carney to be a nice guy, he won the election in a tight race.
00:01:58.780 Trump said, quote,
00:02:00.100 Trump confirmed that he invited Carney to the White House saying that the visit would happen within a week.
00:02:21.240 In an interview Trump gave to The Atlantic published on Election Day, Trump remarked that the Conservatives held a 25-point lead in the polls until he was re-elected and flipped Canada's opinion environment with his on-and-off tariffs and comments about making Canada the 51st state.
00:02:41.380 Trump had previously suggested in an interview with Fox News' Laura Ingraham that he did not care if the Conservatives lost in the Canadian election, saying it is easier to deal with the Liberals.
00:02:56.500 Trump said, quote,
00:02:57.980 The Conservative that is running is stupidly no friend of mine.
00:03:02.620 I don't know him, but he said negative things.
00:03:05.860 When he says negative things, I couldn't care less.
00:03:08.640 Carney also spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, who congratulated him on his election victory and promised to deepen the defense and commercial ties with each country.
00:03:21.660 So, Clayton, U.S. President Donald Trump has obviously come out of this brazen and he is ready to engage with the Canadian government.
00:03:31.820 Does Trump have the upper hand here as Prime Minister Mark Carney faces a minority government?
00:03:38.960 Well, of course, Donald Trump has already noted that Carney won a minority government and that the country was split 50-50, which he could use and already is kind of to discredit the mandate or the lack thereof that Carney actually has from Canadians.
00:03:54.420 But from Trump's perspective, he has the upper hand, because if Carney fails to strike a favorable deal with the U.S., Trump can tell the businesses in America who are upset about the tariffs that it's the Canadians who are being difficult and not him.
00:04:09.180 At the heart of Trump's tariffs is a desire to manufacture more in America.
00:04:14.340 So, whether he gets a free trade deal with Carney's liberal government or not, the result will be a net positive for America.
00:04:22.140 Now, Carney vowed many policies which were first brought up by Conservative leader Pierre Polyev, like trading with new partners and lifting provincial trade barriers.
00:04:31.320 So, if Carney can manage to deliver on those promises, it's possible that eventually Canada could be in a position where it isn't impacted by the tariffs either, though that's not a likely position for Canada to be in over the next few years.
00:04:47.040 Canada relies on exports to the U.S. more than the other way around, so the tariff war always disproportionately impacted Canadians.
00:04:56.180 Carney also vowed to impose border adjustment measures, or as the Canadian Taxpayers Federation calls them, carbon tariffs, on any country's imports that don't have carbon pricing.
00:05:09.980 So, Trump is almost certainly going to seize on this, saying how can the Canadians complain about his tariffs when Canada imposes their own unrelated tariffs against countries such as the U.S.?
00:05:21.400 It's likely that at least one of Carney's campaign slogans is true, and that the U.S.-Canada relationship will never be the same now that the Liberals secured a fourth term in power.
00:05:37.820 While announcing he would advocate for bail reform and a tough-on-crime approach from courts and the federal government, Ontario Premier Doug Ford attacked federal Conservative leader Pierre Polyev again.
00:05:50.080 During a Wednesday press conference, Ford was asked why he didn't publicly support Polyev since he's announcing a commitment to the same policies Conservatives ran on during the election.
00:06:01.580 Ford said, quote,
00:06:02.560 I shouldn't interfere in the federal election. Last time I checked, Pierre Polyev never came out in our election.
00:06:09.280 Matter of fact, he or one of his lieutenants told every one of his members, don't you dare go out and help the PCs.
00:06:16.640 This comes after newly elected Conservative MP Jamil Giovanni criticized Ford during the election, having won in his Bowmanville, Oshawa North riding in Ontario.
00:06:27.580 Giovanni unleashed on Ford, saying he, quote,
00:06:30.900 sabotaged the Conservative campaign and acted as a, quote, hype man for the Liberal Party.
00:06:36.880 Giovanni referenced comments made by Ford's campaign manager, Corey Taniki,
00:06:40.700 which Ford echoed in the middle of the election, saying Polyev had blown a 20-point advantage over the Liberals and that his campaign was mismanaged.
00:06:50.720 Giovanni said the federal Conservatives stayed out of Ford's campaign, out of respect,
00:06:55.640 and Ford should have done the same rather than sharing negative opinions about the Conservatives and meeting with Liberal leaders.
00:07:02.520 Ford said, quote,
00:07:04.520 I'm not going to dig deep into this. The people spoke, and I have no say in who people vote for, but I'll tell you one thing.
00:07:12.040 We have a democratically elected government. I will hold them accountable, Ford continued.
00:07:17.260 I'll hold them accountable like I would, no matter if it's a Conservative government or Liberal government.
00:07:22.800 Ford continued to blast Polyev, saying he could have made a phone call to Ford and his government.
00:07:27.800 In response to Ford's comments on Wednesday, Giovanni shared an AI meme image of Doug Ford's face edited onto Hulk Hogan's body,
00:07:36.080 ripping up his Ontario PC shirt to reveal a Liberal Party of Canada endorsement.
00:07:41.500 So, Cosmin, obviously, federal Conservatives and supporters of Polyev's campaign are furious with Doug Ford over this.
00:07:50.900 How have other premiers responded to the election results?
00:07:54.620 I think beyond the general congratulations for Mark Carney, most premiers responded pretty level-headed.
00:08:04.500 Other than Doug Ford, who seemed to make this a personal issue,
00:08:10.260 I saw that Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta,
00:08:14.660 also essentially asked the Ottawa government to respect Alberta's sovereignty
00:08:21.900 and give away past federal hostility, saying Albertans' patience had run out.
00:08:28.820 So, she wrote a letter, a statement that she put out on her social media,
00:08:33.600 and she essentially invited the Prime Minister to immediately commence working with the Alberta government
00:08:39.880 to reset the relationship between the two partners with meaningful action rather than hollow rhetoric.
00:08:47.520 And in the past, we've seen, especially with Mark Carney, as soon as he assumed his leadership,
00:08:55.020 there has been some friction between the Alberta government and the Liberal Party,
00:08:59.500 and Smith came out to essentially stand up for her own government's interests and the province's interests, essentially.
00:09:06.820 While Ontario's Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford attacked the federal Conservative campaign during and after the election,
00:09:17.620 B.C. Conservative leader John Rustad shared a message of encouragement and unity with the movement.
00:09:24.480 Rustad shared on X Wednesday that he commends the Conservative Party of Canada for gaining both votes and seats
00:09:32.180 and forming a, quote, principled strong opposition after Monday's election.
00:09:38.580 This comes after Conservative MP Jameel Javani criticized Ford for, quote,
00:09:43.680 sabotaging the federal campaign while the CPC did not interfere in the Ontario election just months earlier.
00:09:52.180 Rustad said, quote,
00:09:53.300 He went on to say that
00:10:17.820 that Conservatives across the country should support one another, especially if they are aligned in policy.
00:10:24.500 Rustad said, quote,
00:10:26.240 For our broader movement to have the best chance to succeed,
00:10:30.760 I believe Conservatives must support Conservatives at all levels of government, he said in a post.
00:10:38.280 It takes political courage, but I believe if Conservative parties are aligned on policy and approach,
00:10:44.720 it's the right thing to do.
00:10:46.060 This comes after Ford announced that he would hold the federal Liberal government accountable
00:10:52.620 and demand a tough-on-crime approach to stop repeat violent offenders from being granted bail.
00:11:01.600 During the announcement, which aligned with Conservative leader Pierre Polyev's campaign,
00:11:07.040 he was asked if he didn't support Polyev when he was making these same announcements.
00:11:12.300 Clayton, I live in British Columbia, and I know that several races here were tight,
00:11:17.800 and there was a lot of attention to British Columbia.
00:11:21.300 Were there any ridings in BC specifically this federal election that stood out to you?
00:11:27.340 Well, I think one riding our listeners could be interested in is, of course,
00:11:31.000 the North Island Powell River riding in Vancouver,
00:11:34.580 which Conservatives just won, electing the former independent documentary maker
00:11:39.060 and political commentator, Aaron Gunn.
00:11:41.620 Gunn is part of a new wave of Conservatives elected to office
00:11:45.620 who have a sharp ability to articulate the issues that Conservatives feel Canadians are facing.
00:11:51.620 Polyev has run a host of these individuals, including Jamil Javani in Durham,
00:11:55.700 and former True North anchor and journalist Andrew Lawton in the London area.
00:11:59.620 Conservative Canadians could look at these newly elected MPs as a victory for the post-pandemic
00:12:05.960 Conservative movement, even with a disappointing loss in the overall election.
00:12:11.180 Having former independent media personalities in the House of Commons grilling the government
00:12:16.920 with the ability to speak under pressure and accurately define those issues
00:12:21.240 will only be a boon for the Conservative movement at large.
00:12:24.960 It's also notable that the NDP traditionally performed very well in BC,
00:12:29.720 particularly in the Vancouver area.
00:12:32.760 Riding, including North Island, Powell River, saw a power struggle between Liberals
00:12:37.340 who felt there was only one left-wing option
00:12:40.000 and those who figured this was the one area it made sense to vote NDP
00:12:44.420 as they were the incumbents.
00:12:46.580 The collapse of the NDP likely worked in the Conservatives' favour in parts of BC,
00:12:51.360 whereas in Eastern Canada, the unlikely-to-form government parties' poor performance
00:12:56.740 solidified a Liberal victory overall.
00:13:02.460 Thanks for tuning in.
