00:00:00.000 At an otherwise sullen night at the Conservative Party of Canada's campaign
00:00:12.240 headquarters, one of the big victories embraced by the people here in Regina has
00:00:16.520 been the defeat of Ralph Goodale, the longtime member of Parliament, former
00:00:20.820 finance minister, public safety minister, and the current ministry, defeated by
00:00:25.440 Michael Cram by a significant margin. Now first off, Ralph Goodale in his concession
00:00:30.600 speech gave a very gracious and classy message. He thanked the people that have
00:00:34.620 supported him all these years. He gave his congratulations to Michael Cram and
00:00:39.240 wished him well. But the thing with Ralph Goodale, which is important to note here,
00:00:43.080 is that he had to be the point man on Justin Trudeau's attempts to go after
00:00:48.000 gun owners. Ralph Goodale, who represents a riding that has a rural component, that
00:00:52.380 has gun owners. Ralph Goodale, who knows about gun ownership and the rural
00:00:56.940 community issues, had to be the guy who sold the Justin Trudeau urban-focused
00:01:02.500 gun-grabbing narrative, just as Bill Blair did in Toronto and nationwide. And I'm not
00:01:08.820 saying that gun control was the singular issue that got Ralph Goodale ejected from
00:01:14.180 office. There were other components there. Generally speaking, a Western
00:01:17.740 dissatisfaction with Justin Trudeau. You have to remember, Ralph Goodale has often been
00:01:21.820 the only Liberal represented in Saskatchewan, but Goodale is a casualty of what has
00:01:27.320 increasingly been Justin Trudeau's alienation of those who aren't in the
00:01:31.420 major cities. In his campaign, he was exclusively, it seemed like, campaigning in
00:01:36.520 Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal and the communities around there. He gave a stop
00:01:40.920 to Alberta to do an 11 p.m. rally. He did basically no time outside of the big
00:01:46.260 cities. And Ralph Goodale, a guy who is otherwise well-liked by his constituents or has
00:01:51.040 been for the last two decades, is on his way out of office as a result. Now, I'm not
00:01:55.460 going to jump up and down and dance on the grave of his political career. I thank him
00:01:59.360 for his service as I would to anyone. But it proves that you cannot turn your back on
00:02:04.340 your constituents and your province just because that's what the leader of your party has decided
00:02:09.640 to do. For True North, from Regina, I'm Andrew Lawton.
