The city of Edmonton in Alberta is the latest to decide that laws don't apply.
00:00:05.220
Edmonton City Council decided this week to turn Edmonton into a sanctuary city,
00:00:09.980
basically rolling out the welcome mat for illegal immigrants,
00:00:13.380
to say that immigration status doesn't matter when city services are concerned.
00:00:18.520
Now, if we're talking about whether illegal immigrants should be able to get a library card or ride the bus,
00:00:23.800
these aren't really matters that are of concern to me or most Canadians.
00:00:27.520
Where sanctuary city policies get so dangerous is when we're talking about interactions with law enforcement.
00:00:33.540
If you've had run-ins with bylaw officers, even a municipal police officer,
00:00:38.320
whether these agencies and government agents basically are allowed to question your immigration status
00:00:44.520
and if they have reason to believe that you are in Canada illegally,
00:00:48.320
whether they're allowed to share that information with the immigration authorities.
00:00:54.320
They, first off, have a tremendous cost attached to them because we are giving services to people who generally aren't paying taxes
00:01:01.040
and, more importantly, they show a fundamental disregard for the law itself.
00:01:06.500
Sarah Hamilton, an Edmonton, Alberta City Councilor, has said that sanctuary city policies are important
00:01:12.120
and Edmonton needs one because it turns Edmonton into a city where people can live without fear.
00:01:18.100
Well, it actually turns Edmonton into a city where people can live without the law.
00:01:22.700
If you are living in a country illegally, what guarantee is there that you're following other laws and regulations
00:01:29.980
and basic expectations that go along with living in a country?
00:01:35.840
If your civic entry is illegal, then what sort of civic duty are you going to have?
00:01:40.060
And this policy actually passed by an overwhelming margin
00:01:43.740
and the fact that virtue signaling has become so commonplace in most municipal councils
00:01:48.640
is why sanctuary city policies have been put in several provinces right now
00:01:53.740
and even in smaller towns and cities are championed by councillors who don't even know what they mean
00:01:59.480
but councillors that just like the way they sound
00:02:02.560
and they like the idea of saying that, you know, we're pro-diversity.
00:02:05.760
Well, you can be pro-diversity without being pro-illegal immigration.
00:02:10.060
And sanctuary city proponents would do well to learn that.
