00:00:00.000 Mark Carney's pipeline flip-flop is making waves again and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith isn't
00:00:16.760 letting it slide. We'll break down her criticism and look at how Carney's story keeps changing
00:00:22.160 depending on where he's speaking and who he's speaking to. Alberta's Energy Minister Brian
00:00:27.780 Jean is also speaking out this time against the federal emissions cap which he warns could
00:00:33.200 devastate Alberta and the country's economy. Despite the Liberal Party having a new leader
00:00:38.200 he warns that it's the same old story and despite getting less federal funding than other provinces
00:00:44.120 Alberta is leading the country in new home construction. My name's Isaac Lamoureux and
00:00:49.100 I'll cover all of these stories on the shortened holiday version of the Alberta Roundup today.
00:00:53.420 Let's hop into that first story now. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is taking shots at
00:00:58.840 Liberal leader Mark Carney for continuing to flip-flop on Canada's energy future and for
00:01:03.760 making more vague non-committal responses on key issues. She posted to X calling him out saying
00:01:10.100 quote, so it would appear Mark Carney is now just fine with Canada continuing to be 100% reliant on
00:01:17.800 the United States to purchase all of our oil and gas and to purchase all of the fuel used by Ontario
00:01:23.220 and Quebec from the US through Line 5. Smith's comments followed Carney's appearance on the
00:01:28.320 French-language talk show, Tout le monde en part, where he delivered an ambiguous statement on the future
00:01:33.500 of pipelines in Canada. Here's what he had to say.
00:01:36.060 Il faut choisir quelques projets, quelques grandes projets, pas nécessairement des pipelines,
00:01:42.320 mais peut-être des pipelines. On verra.
00:01:46.140 In response, Smith said, quote,
00:01:48.620 This is absurd, irrational and anti-Canadian in every respect. It's also the exact opposite of
00:01:54.940 what he promised while in Alberta a couple of weeks ago. Does he want Canada to be strong,
00:01:59.920 prosperous and independent or not? True North reported how Carney spent most of the interview
00:02:04.820 defending his record. The Liberal leader justified his former company Brookfield Asset Management's
00:02:10.300 investments in offshore tax havens and insisted that he led Canada through the 2008 financial
00:02:17.000 recession despite former Prime Minister Stephen Harper crediting his former finance minister,
00:02:22.720 the late Jim Flaherty. Smith previously attacked Carney for telling her in person that he would oppose
00:02:27.660 Bill C-69, only to say later that he would not repeal the No More Pipelines bill. Carney made a
00:02:33.620 similar flip-flop with the oil and gas cap, telling Smith one day that he opposed an oil and gas
00:02:38.220 production cap, only to express support for it the very next day in Ottawa.
00:02:42.920 Smith said, quote,
00:02:43.920 This has been the same story for the last 10 years. Liberals come to Alberta, smile for the cameras,
00:02:48.960 tell everyone how much they're going to work with Alberta and support the energy sector.
00:02:52.680 Then they leave, go home, and proceed to do everything in their power to roadblock and
00:02:57.020 scare away investment from the energy sector. Carney has also previously faced backlash for tailoring
00:03:02.600 his messaging to different audiences, offering conflicting views on Canada's pipeline future
00:03:07.520 depending on whether he was speaking in English or French. On the other hand, Conservative leader
00:03:12.600 Pierre Poilievre has pledged to repeal Bill C-69 if elected Prime Minister, aiming to remove barriers to
00:03:18.900 building major energy projects in Canada. Here's an exchange between Poilievre and Carney in 2021 where
00:03:24.500 he called out the Liberal leaders' hypocrisy on pipelines at a committee hearing.
00:03:28.440 Do you support the Prime Minister's decision to veto the Northern Gateway Pipeline, Mr. Carney?
00:03:35.880 I understand the veto of the Northern Gateway Pipeline.
00:03:39.780 Do you support it?
00:03:41.660 Given both environmental and commercial reasons.
00:03:45.440 Do you support it?
00:03:46.820 I think it's sensible. I wasn't involved in the decision, but I think it was the right decision.
00:03:51.020 And yet your company has invested billions of dollars in oil companies in both Brazil and the UAE
00:03:58.180 to buy pipelines. You've bought billions of dollars of pipelines as a company in the last five years.
00:04:05.720 Do you support those investments?
00:04:08.240 Mr. Poilievre, there is a global energy system. And one of the issues, I'm trying to explain a bit of how the economy works.
00:04:16.560 Thank you so much.
00:04:17.540 Well, it may help. One of the issues for this committee in thinking about a sustainable transition is where is Canada's role in those as energy transitions from fossil fuels to renewables?
00:04:33.120 And in different jurisdictions, into different geography, it matters. It matters. And this is a fundamental point.
00:04:39.820 I'm sorry, you're finally getting to a point that is relevant to this committee's inquiry.
00:04:47.520 What you're saying is you oppose pipelines in Canada, but you support them in the UAE and in Brazil.
00:04:53.960 That's what you've actually said.
00:04:55.540 There are specific pipelines.
00:04:56.400 That's your double standard.
00:04:57.680 Commenting recently on Carney's shifting promises, Poilievre told voters to doubt the sincerity of Carney's commitments.
00:05:04.920 Poilievre said, quote, don't believe him in any language.
00:05:08.200 Alberta Minister of Energy and Minerals, Brian Jean, called out the federal government for continuing with pursuing an emissions cap.
00:05:15.700 In a post to X, he called the cap a ticking time bomb that would explode Alberta's economy and shatter the country's economy.
00:05:23.400 Despite Carney trying to present himself as a new prime minister who just got here, Jean said that, despite the new ringleader, it was the same cast of characters.
00:05:32.320 A cast he said was intent to shut down the energy sector.
00:05:36.480 Take a listen of what Jean had to say.
00:05:38.200 The federal government has come out with new details on its emission cap.
00:05:41.840 And let me tell you, it's clearly a ticking time bomb set to explode Alberta's economy and shatter our country's prosperity.
00:05:50.520 Despite Justin Trudeau and his radical environment minister's best efforts to brand these regulations positively, this is a job-crushing production cap that will hurt families, hurt businesses, and hurt Canada's economy.
00:06:03.460 Make no mistake, their intention is another step towards shutting down our energy industry.
00:06:09.100 Section 92A clearly grants provinces exclusive authority over the development of non-renewable resources.
00:06:19.860 Yet this cap demands a reduction of one million barrels a day by 2030.
00:06:24.240 This out-of-touch prime minister cannot ignore Canada's constitution.
00:06:28.340 And we are ready to take our fight to the courts.
00:06:31.980 The evidence of this job and prosperity-crushing cap is undeniable.
00:06:35.980 Three independent firms have shown that this regulation would strike Canada's economy hard, eliminating over 150,000 jobs and draining $14 billion annually from our economy.
00:06:48.220 That's $14 billion that won't be going towards new schools, hospitals, bridges, and roads, all for a reckless scheme that will not reduce global emissions.
00:06:59.540 Tweaks won't work.
00:07:00.700 This cap must be scrapped.
00:07:02.740 We won't stand by as the federal government jeopardizes our prosperity, violates our constitution, and downgrades our standard of living with its extreme agenda.
00:07:11.680 The Alberta government celebrated leading Canada in housing starts between January and March 2025.
00:07:17.180 The province said that despite accounting for only 13% of the country's population, it built more than 25% of all housing starts so far this year.
00:07:26.740 Alberta, despite receiving far less housing dollars than BC and Ontario, saw an increase in housing starts of 18%, while BC saw a 38% decrease and Ontario saw a 30% decrease compared to last year.
00:07:39.660 Alberta's Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, Jason Nixon, said,
00:07:44.080 After a record-breaking 2024, today's housing starts numbers are just more proof that Alberta's plan to build homes is working.
00:07:51.860 Last year, the province launched the Stop Housing Delays online portal for developers to emphasize fast and efficient residential construction.
00:07:59.620 The Alberta government compared the portal to a, quote, snitch line on red tape.
00:08:04.180 The province also updated the provincial building code and said it continues to attract investment by having the lowest overall taxes in Canada and by having no provincial sales tax and the lowest corporate tax rate.
00:08:15.780 The province's housing starts between January and March 2025, compared to between January and March 2024, grew to 11,470 from 9,744.
00:08:26.100 The biggest cities, Calgary and Edmonton, saw 16% and 17% increases in housing starts, respectively.
00:08:32.040 The province said it will support $9 billion in investments into affordable housing to support 25,000 additional low-income households by 2031.
00:08:41.840 That wraps up this week's short show.
00:08:44.200 My name's Isaac Lameru, your host of the Alberta Roundup.
00:08:46.880 Have a great Easter weekend.
00:08:48.260 Thank you and God bless.
