00:00:22.000 organizations is the Ladies of Liberties Alliance and with me is the president of their Canadian
00:00:28.720 chapter Anna Riso. So Anna, do you want to tell us a bit about what Lola is and the work that they do?
00:00:35.840 Well, Lola is a chapter-based organization. We are across different countries. We are located in more
00:00:43.120 than 20 countries now. I'm leading the Canada chapter and what we do is that we give an alternative
00:00:49.200 to women that are interested in politics. They're interested in the discussion of ideas but they
00:00:55.200 don't like the narrative of the left. So essentially we want to give a space for women that are
00:01:01.520 interested in the liberty movement. Many women that are libertarians and some of them don't even know
00:01:07.040 it. Like for example, so many women are like, oh yeah, I support women's rights but I don't like the
00:01:14.560 narrative that men are the enemy. And honestly, in Lola you find a space for that because we believe in
00:01:22.320 the individual. We believe that women and men, they're individuals. Like men are not the enemy,
00:01:28.240 the woman is not the enemy of the man. And you know, in the end we promote liberty, we promote
00:01:33.600 freedom, and we promote free market ideas. Absolutely. What got you specifically interested
00:01:39.760 in being involved with this group? Well, as a person who had to live in a socialist country
00:01:46.960 during most of my life, I was 23 years old when I moved to Canada. So I remember clearly what it's
00:01:54.400 like to live in a socialist-controlled country. I remember what it's like to live with hyperinflation,
00:02:02.240 I remember what it's like to live without freedom of speech, like these kind of situations is, they
00:02:09.600 taught me that, you know, socialism and the left, they don't care about rights. For sure. And I mean,
00:02:15.200 I know you quite well and you're from Venezuela. How bad does socialism turn a prosperous nation to
00:02:24.320 complete chaos? Because Venezuela has been quite badly hit by socialism and other leftist policies.
00:02:32.720 Well, when I left Venezuela, the situation was so bad that I had to go and line up to buy a bag of
00:02:40.720 bread. That I had to go to the supermarket, do long lines, and they would, like, they would not just tell
00:02:49.840 me, you have to come if your ID number ends in, let's say, nine, you can only come on these days,
00:02:58.320 and you can only buy one bag of bread per person. And that's all you're allowed to do. In work case,
00:03:05.680 a scenario, they will even ask for your fingerprints. Because you could only buy certain amount of food
00:03:11.840 because there was a scarcity. And why there was a scarcity, you might ask yourself. Price controls,
00:03:18.320 expropriation, no respect for private property at all. And that led to an economic disaster.
00:03:26.000 Well, it does sound disastrous. Indeed, you've obviously came to Canada, which has been a more
00:03:31.120 free country. Over the last three years, we've seen several civil liberties breached in Canada.
00:03:38.240 Does that concern you to see what has happened in Canada the last three years? And do you think
00:03:42.720 it's getting better now? Or are you still concerned about some of the direction that
00:03:46.400 Justin Trudeau has taken, the stuff that Jagmeet Singh wants to impose, for example, which kind of,
00:03:51.040 you know, sounds a little bit like what you're describing is happening in Venezuela?
00:03:54.880 It's actually very concerning. Since COVID started, I saw how the Canadian government
00:04:00.560 used this crisis in order to expand power, in order to seek for control, right? So I never was,
00:04:09.360 like, I never supported lockdowns. And people were like, no, that's inhuman. How are you going to do
00:04:15.040 that? You know, you shouldn't put the life of business on top of the life of people. But what people
00:04:21.520 don't realize that businesses are part of the life of people? Financial freedom is part of your life.
00:04:28.800 How do you sustain your family if you don't have money? No, that's true. It's a good point. We were
00:04:33.360 talking a bit earlier before we started recording, and you mentioned something important. It is the way
00:04:38.800 that socialism affects women. How are women impacted by socialism? I believe that women take the worst
00:04:47.680 when the economy goes downhill. And that's based on what I saw in my country. You know,
00:04:55.360 women, we had to struggle more to get into the workforce. Now things are more equal in countries
00:05:02.320 like Canada, which is good. But you know what is sad to see that single mom that had to struggle with
00:05:09.760 her kid on her own because the dad had to flew to another country because there was no alternative in
00:05:16.160 Venezuela. It's sad to see the amount of women in Venezuela who were victims of human trafficking
00:05:21.840 because it went up when the crisis came to my country. It was depressing to see how many women
00:05:29.040 had to become basically like illegal prostitution went skyrocketing when this happened. So in situations
00:05:37.360 like that make you think, yes, women take the worst part. And that's certainly very interesting. And it's
00:05:43.920 quite sad, honestly. What I find even more sad is that, you know, I see on university campuses and all
00:05:50.640 the woke lefties now, they love socialism. And in fact, socialism is very popular amongst the young
00:05:56.880 people that, you know, with socialist leaders like Bernie Sanders are kind of selling this socialism as a
00:06:03.920 problem solution rather to all our problems. Why do you think so many young people here in capitalist
00:06:12.720 western nations are so attracted by socialism despite the fact that it's failed every time
00:06:17.280 it's been tried? Well, one of the reasons is because the left was very smart in taking over academia.
00:06:23.600 That's something that I believe that they did strategically and they did with an obvious
00:06:27.920 intention that is to spread their ideology. And another thing is that many young people are very
00:06:33.920 naive when it comes to propaganda. So I have seen some women, for example, telling me that, you know,
00:06:39.520 the Cuban health care system is good because they provide abortion, because they don't ban abortion
00:06:45.600 in Cuba. And it's like, woman, do you have any idea why you have so many abortions in Cuba? Because
00:06:52.240 preconception methods are a luxury. Condoms are a luxury. And like many of these women don't want to bring
00:06:59.520 a child into a nation where they cannot even feed this child. That's a fair point. Lastly, I mean,
00:07:06.400 you guys obviously are doing some activism to try to fight back. Maybe others are as well. Like,
00:07:11.840 what more needs to be done so that young people become quite, like truly realize what's real
00:07:20.320 socialism? What's the cost? Are we going to have to live through it in order for us to realize that
00:07:23.760 it's bad? Or do you think there's a way to prevent that? Honestly, sometimes I feel like that too,
00:07:27.280 but I believe that what it needs to be done is, you know, spaces like this, activism, engagement.
00:07:34.640 Like what the reason why the left take over the mainstream is because we leave that space empty.
00:07:41.840 Many people are not really engaged in politics. They see it as problematic. What am I going to do this?
00:07:48.960 And you know, in the end of the day, that space that you leave, someone else will take it. And
00:07:56.000 someone else will probably take it because they are radicalized with crazy ideas too.
