00:00:00.000 It's been exactly one year since the two Canadian Michaels were arrested on trumpet charges in China
00:00:05.020 and Justin Trudeau still has no idea what to do.
00:00:08.220 China continues to flex its totalitarian muscles
00:00:10.800 and senior liberals keep pretending that China is our ally
00:00:14.300 and Andrew Scheer finally pushes back against media criticism against him.
00:00:19.000 I'm Candace Malcolm and this is The Candace Malcolm Show.
00:00:26.320 Hi everyone, welcome to the podcast.
00:00:27.780 We're going to talk a lot about China today.
00:00:29.780 There's a lot to get through and it's been, like I said off the top,
00:00:32.560 it's been exactly one year since the two Michaels were detained in China,
00:00:37.120 basically on trumped-up charges.
00:00:38.600 So you have Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig were arrested
00:00:43.040 and you have to remember that China is not a Western liberal democracy.
00:00:46.560 China doesn't have the basic tenets of the rule of law like we do in Canada.
00:00:50.940 So while the CFO of Huawei is on house arrest in Vancouver,
00:00:55.700 she has two mansions in Vancouver, so she's basically living a lavish life,
00:00:59.020 although she can't leave her house.
00:01:00.800 These two Michaels who are in prison, basically they're being subject to psychological warfare.
00:01:07.220 They've had lengthy interrogations, they've had no access to lawyers,
00:01:11.300 no access to their families.
00:01:12.820 We hear horror stories about how, for instance,
00:01:15.720 one of them had their glasses taken away, their reading glasses,
00:01:18.160 so they can't spend his time reading.
00:01:19.800 I've read other reports of the lights being left on 24-7 in their cells.
00:01:27.600 So it's hard to imagine and hard to put yourself in the position of one of those two individuals
00:01:33.240 or their families and what they must be living through.
00:01:35.940 But this is like a hostage diplomacy.
00:01:38.080 This is China displaying its tactics, saying that, you know,
00:01:41.800 if you're going to arrest one of our senior officials of a senior company in China,
00:01:45.960 we're going to fight back by detaining two Canadians.
00:01:49.480 And just keep in mind, there are hundreds of thousands of Canadians that live in China,
00:01:53.440 that work in China, that are business people, that are over there.
00:01:56.260 And the idea that the Chinese authorities could just detain a Canadian
00:02:00.460 because they're angry over a dispute that's happening with Canada
00:02:03.780 is pretty terrifying, especially given that China is this growing economic
00:02:08.080 and political power in the world.
00:02:09.680 And they really are a menace.
00:02:11.240 And I think that this whole thing just shows how out of water Justin Trudeau is
00:02:16.460 when dealing with a serious diplomatic issue.
00:02:19.100 He literally, he looks like a fish out of water.
00:02:20.820 He doesn't know what to do.
00:02:22.060 He has been sending so many mixed messages on China,
00:02:24.560 treating China like an ally, treating China like an adversary.
00:02:28.040 We don't really know.
00:02:29.140 A recent report has come out outlying the horrific conditions.
00:02:33.060 It was actually a leaked report from the Chinese government
00:02:35.100 that got given to The New York Times outlying the detention camps and the prison camps.
00:02:39.840 China has about 1.5 million people, religious minorities, political dissidents,
00:02:45.180 even writers, poets, all kinds of different religious minorities,
00:02:48.780 but mostly Uyghur Muslims.
00:02:50.900 And they are detained in basically concentration camps, detention camps.
00:02:54.540 But then at the same time, we have senior liberal figures continue
00:02:59.000 to kind of complement China and to celebrate China.
00:03:03.120 We had the former ambassador to China, John McCallum, basically giving advice to China,
00:03:10.100 to Chinese media at a press conference.
00:03:12.680 We have a system of extradition treaty, a system of rules of law,
00:03:18.220 which are above the government.
00:03:20.240 The government cannot change these things.
00:03:23.140 And as I said, I think Ms. Meng has quite a strong case.
00:03:27.460 McCallum got fired.
00:03:28.420 But he is far from the only senior liberal person to basically be treating China
00:03:33.760 as an ally throughout this whole ordeal.
00:03:36.700 Former liberal MP and former deputy prime minister John Manley recently stated
00:03:42.020 that he advised that Canada should do a prisoner swap, a prisoner exchange,
00:03:46.980 to basically pardon the Huawei exec Meng and allow the two Michaels to be freed.
00:03:54.480 Now, this might sound like a sort of silver bullet solution, like, hey, let's get our two Michaels
00:03:58.660 out of prison and back into Canada.
00:04:00.860 But then the idea that you would just basically pardon a corrupt Chinese official,
00:04:05.580 allegedly corrupt Chinese official, and allow them to get free.
00:04:09.260 The charges, by the way, that this Huawei CFO is being held on are breaking sanctions laws
00:04:15.940 the United States has against Iran.
00:04:17.480 So doing deals with the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world,
00:04:21.520 the Iranian regime, that's no small charge.
00:04:25.300 It's a pretty serious accusation.
00:04:27.600 So, you know, that's fairly misguided.
00:04:29.360 But again, that's far from the only one.
00:04:31.280 Trudeau recently appointed a new foreign affairs minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne.
00:04:36.260 And a 2017 interview was recently resurfaced.
00:04:40.980 True North was one of the first organizations to report on this.
00:04:44.580 And he was doing an interview in 2017 with a Chinese global television network,
00:04:50.800 which is a state-owned entity.
00:04:52.460 So he's doing an interview with Chinese television.
00:04:54.880 And this is what he had to say about China.
00:04:57.440 Canada, and I would say China, stands out as beacon of stability, predictability,
00:05:02.740 a rule-based system, a very inclusive society.
00:05:06.160 So we've got, he thinks China is a rules-based system and an inclusive society.
00:05:10.340 Well, in light of this horrific report on the detention of individuals from the Muslim faith in China,
00:05:17.200 it's hardly an inclusive society.
00:05:19.480 And the idea that they're rules-based when they arbitrarily arrest two Canadians
00:05:22.480 and hold them without any basic tenets of the rule of law,
00:05:26.660 like even the ability to talk to a lawyer, is absurd.
00:05:30.740 Now, this hadn't happened in 2017,
00:05:32.060 but you have to be pretty naive to believe that this stuff wasn't happening in 2017.
00:05:37.000 Those detention camps that I've been talking about have been running for years,
00:05:40.880 for years, and we've known about them for a very long time.
00:05:43.900 So the fact that Trudeau would promote someone who holds those views,
00:05:46.800 those sort of pro-China, willing to gloss over some of the most wicked human rights abuses in the world
00:05:53.700 and praise China, it comes across as like groveling.
00:05:58.200 It's really, really unfortunate.
00:06:00.720 And again, I think that Trudeau needs to take a stronger stance
00:06:03.720 and don't hold your breath about that
00:06:05.400 because the fact that he's been sending these kind of mixed messages
00:06:08.200 is something that they've been doing since he became prime minister.
00:06:13.220 Staying on in China, one of the problems when you have this sort of dispute that's happening
00:06:17.920 between the Hong Kong protesters and the authoritarian Chinese regime
00:06:21.600 is that it sort of spills over into Canada.
00:06:24.100 And we've been seeing that more and more.
00:06:26.300 There's been video surfacing mostly at high schools in and around Vancouver.
00:06:30.980 There was a video that surfaced of a pro-China student
00:06:35.800 pushing a female pro-Hong Kong demonstrators.
00:06:40.760 And another report just came out from a Richmond,
00:06:43.600 a grade 8 student at Richmond Senior Secondary School
00:06:46.260 who displayed a pro-Hong Kong paraphernalia on his locker.
00:06:50.700 And then someone gave him a pro-China anonymous letter that got taped onto his locker.
00:06:56.160 Now, the CBC reported about this, but the CBC didn't do a very good job reporting about it.
00:07:00.900 They only translated the first few words of the report.
00:07:03.420 So True North had the entire letter translated.
00:07:07.260 And I will read from the letter.
00:07:09.420 It says,
00:07:09.940 The student accused a Hong Kong student of humiliating the Chinese Communist Party.
00:07:27.800 And then they also wrote,
00:07:30.660 You need to understand you are selling your soul to the West.
00:07:34.120 Only two words can be described of a Hong Konger, lowlife and chicken.
00:07:38.480 Without the Communist Party, today's China would not exist.
00:07:41.280 Without the Communist Party, you Hong Kongers would still be living under the feet of the British.
00:07:46.660 So, you know, this is just one of the major problems that Canada has with our open border immigration system
00:07:53.460 is that we don't do any kind of testing for basically extreme views that anyone's just allowed in.
00:08:01.500 So you have people who love freedom and democracy alongside people who love communism and authoritarianism.
00:08:07.980 And, you know, to the author of this letter, if you hate the British and you hate the West,
00:08:11.600 it begs the question of, you know, why did you come to Canada in the first place?
00:08:15.400 Canada is those things as well.
00:08:17.580 And if you love China, you love communism, you know, you shouldn't bring those values to Canada
00:08:22.700 and try to impose them on to others, especially through a threatening, menacing letter.
00:08:27.440 And like I said, this is just the beginning of stuff is happening in the Chinese diaspora in Canada,
00:08:33.540 all over the place.
00:08:34.660 And I think it's very problematic.
00:08:36.720 You can check out that exclusive report that we have over at TNC.
00:08:41.340 And, you know, this is, again, just the beginning of the problems with China.
00:08:44.400 There was a video that surfaced earlier this month of an individual who looks like they had committed some wrong think
00:08:51.700 by commenting on a message from WeChat, commenting about police.
00:08:57.580 And the video is absolutely chilling.
00:08:59.700 This is how individuals are treated in China.
00:09:01.800 It is a authoritarian, totalitarian country.
00:09:04.740 If you insult communism, if you insult the Chinese regime, who knows?
00:09:09.180 You know, the worst case scenario is you get sent to a prison camp.
00:09:11.900 This individual looks like he's potentially on his way to a prison camp, or maybe he'll get spared.
00:09:16.540 But let's play some of that clip.
00:09:17.880 So the person interrogating says, why did you talk about traffic police online?
00:09:22.560 The guy replies, because they were confiscating motorcycles.
00:09:25.940 Then the police officer asks, so what's wrong with police confiscating motorcycles?
00:09:30.700 And the guy basically just says nothing's wrong with that.
00:09:33.520 He apologized.
00:09:34.120 He said it was because he had too much to drink that he wrote that.
00:09:36.920 And he is forced to basically grovel before the interrogator, before the police officer.
00:09:42.120 Pretty spooky stuff.
00:09:43.560 You know, it looks like it's straight out of a novel, of a dystopian novel, or, you know,
00:09:47.800 revisiting some of the worst moments of the 20th century that we think are behind us.
00:09:52.720 But those things are still a reality in China.
00:09:55.280 And again, it's time that Canada takes a stronger stance against this kind of actions.
00:10:02.500 There's no way that China is our ally, and we need to wake up to that fact.
00:10:07.020 OK, let's move on.
00:10:08.200 Some members of the Conservative Party have released a new video sort of standing up for Andrew Scheer.
00:10:14.180 And I think that this is a good start.
00:10:17.560 You know, there's been so much criticism of Andrew Scheer in the media over the last few months
00:10:21.760 since the election, not just from the sort of typical left-wing voices in the media,
00:10:25.980 but more and more from Conservative voices or former Conservative voices or people who
00:10:30.340 were even involved in Andrew Scheer's campaign, saying, hey, look, I don't think this guy is
00:10:34.420 the right guy for the job.
00:10:35.860 For a while there, it didn't really look like Andrew Scheer had anything to come back with.
00:10:41.120 You know, he was kind of laying low.
00:10:42.860 He wasn't defending himself.
00:10:44.420 And you had to kind of wonder, you know, does this guy even really want the job?
00:10:48.120 Does he want to continue to be leader of the Conservative Party?
00:10:50.740 Well, we're finally seeing some signs of Andrew Scheer punching back.
00:10:54.600 They released a video comparing Andrew Scheer in 2019 to Stephen Harper, former prime minister,
00:11:01.380 long-serving prime minister, on how he was treated in 2005 after he lost an election to
00:11:07.720 Paul Martin and reduced Paul Martin's government to a liberal minority.
00:11:12.440 So basically, they just go through a bunch of headlines that read like headlines are today
00:11:16.880 saying that, you know, Harper will be PM when roast pigs fly.
00:11:23.320 Once again, the focus is on the shortcomings of Harper and Co.
00:11:27.800 Harper gets an A for effort, but scores an F for results.
00:11:31.580 Tory leader has failed to sway voters.
00:11:34.180 Harper ponders political future.
00:11:35.880 Weary leader hails historic results despite failures in Ontario.
00:11:39.520 Talk grows among Tories about who will succeed Harper.
00:11:42.220 And then, of course, only a few months after all of these articles were written, there was
00:11:46.820 a snap election and Canadians went to the polls again in 2006.
00:11:51.580 And it was that point that Stephen Harper went on to win that election and get his first minority
00:11:56.500 government.
00:11:56.980 He got another minority in 2008.
00:11:59.020 And then in 2011, he won the historic majority.
00:12:02.220 So the conservatives are sort of saying, you know, look, Andrew Scheer is not alone.
00:12:07.620 This is sort of the typical reaction to a conservative leader.
00:12:11.060 And there are some great quotes in this video from Stephen Harper that we should all keep
00:12:14.760 in mind.
00:12:15.680 Any conservative anywhere, anytime can, by criticizing other conservatives, become an instant and
00:12:21.040 enormous media star, said Stephen Harper.
00:12:24.660 Harper argued a successful conservative leader is someone who ignores such people and does not
00:12:29.040 spend time attacking other conservatives.
00:12:31.160 So, once again, I agree with Stephen Harper 100%.
00:12:34.400 I don't think that conservatives should waste their time nitpicking one another.
00:12:37.580 We shouldn't fight internally among, either among the conservative party or just among the
00:12:42.300 conservative community at large.
00:12:46.060 We should focus our attention on the big picture, which is fighting against socialists and liberals
00:12:51.400 who are trying to destroy Canada.
00:12:53.040 And I think that we would be wise to take this advice.
00:12:55.640 It's so easy to spend the months after the election kind of going after and attacking the
00:13:00.980 leader of a conservative party who may have made some missteps.
00:13:03.520 And, of course, it's important to point those out.
00:13:05.660 But the greater focus, again, should be on making sure that the country doesn't slide further
00:13:11.420 and further towards socialism, which it is under the current liberal government.
00:13:16.320 So I'm going to leave it at that.
00:13:17.420 Thank you so much, everyone, for tuning in.
00:13:19.860 And we will be back again on Thursday.
